Sequester solidarity: Obama to return five percent of his salary

posted at 6:41 pm on April 3, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Gee, neato.

President Obama plans to return 5 percent of his salary to the Treasury in solidarity with federal workers who are going to be furloughed as part of the automatic budget cuts known as the sequester, an administration official said Wednesday.

The voluntary move would be retroactive to March 1, the official said, and apply through the rest of the fiscal year, which ends in September. The White House came up with the 5 percent figure to approximate the level of spending cuts to nondefense federal agencies that took effect that day. …

Word of the president’s decision came a day after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter disclosed that they would return a share of their salaries commensurate with the pay lost by the department’s civilian employees who are expected to be furloughed for 14 days before the end of the fiscal year.

Yes, it’s a real sacrifice for him, I’m sure. But fine, politicians making politically inexpensive, empty gestures is nothing new — my problem is that it’s a politically inexpensive, empty gesture designed to make it look like the president is a sympathetic yet ultimately powerless pawn in the sequestration drama, when the man not only signed off on the thing, but deliberately tried to make it all as painful as possible and refused to get on board with any mitigating efforts.

And hey, you know what else might make a really great “budget gesture”? How about crafting a budget that quits trying to expand the bureaucracy and garner more revenue and actually makes an effort to pay down our damaging level of debt, instead of… whatever it is that’s going on here:

Obama’s total income according to his 2011 tax returns was $789,674. That figure includes his investments and book sales, which are not part of his 5 percent give back.

Hooboy! That 5% given back is really gonna put a major dent in the family income, I tell ya. What a guy.

hawkeye54 on April 3, 2013 at 7:05 PM

In solidarity with the President, can I withhold 5% of my Federal income taxes too?

I’ve got a better idea for the President. Let him follow the example of Pope Francis, and drive himself to and from “work”, and buy his own fuel for his limo, plane, and helicopter. Then he might understand why the American people might want to build the Keystone XL pipeline and drill and frack for oil and gas.

Next time he should only play 17 holes of golf. Hey, it would bring down his stroke total!!!

LOL. Meanwhile, on “Billionaires Row” in San Francisco (happening now) …

Tonight, Obama will attend two San Francisco fundraisers for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee — a $5,000 a head reception at the home of billionaire environmental advocate Tom Steyer and his wife Kat Taylor, and then a $32,500 per person dinner at the home of Ann and Gordon Getty. It’s one of 14 fundraisers for House Dems that the president has committed to this year, sources say.

On Thursday, he goes to tony Atherton, where he will star at two fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee. One, with tickets at $32,400 per person is at the home of investment guru Mark Heising and Liz Simons, and another is at the home of Levi-Strauss heir John Goldman and his wife Marcia, where tickets are $1,000 and up.

It sounds impressive, until you realize that they’ll often spend a couple million dollars more on a vacation just by him and his family not traveling in the same jet.

Let’s see: 2,000,000 / 20,000 = 100

He would have to take 100 times as much of a pay cut to equal ONE of those unnecessary planes on ONE vacation.

Which would leave his salary at 400,000 – 2,000,000, or Obama PAYING 1,600,000.

Basically, it’s a meaningless gesture.

That’s not even an hour of time flyng Air Force One.
That’s not even what he had the US taxpayer spend to fly his dog Bo on a separate plane to Maine instead of traveling with the family. Tha’s not even what he cost the US taxpayer to do one DNC fundraiser or one photo-op. That’s not even what he spent on Michelle’s ugly ring when he got elected the first time, or what she spent on lingerie in one shopping trip.

It’s a pathetic empty gesture, and your thinking it has any real significance or meaning demonstrates quite clearly your extraordinary intellectual deficit, so typical of Obamiots.

How about he bag the 5%, and cut his vacations 20% or his fundraisers 20% or play one less round of golf a month?

The last calculation I saw had the US taxpayer spending $1.4 billion dollars a year on the Obamas’ lavish lifestyle. So that $20,000 would be about 0.001% of what we spend on the Obamas. Gee, what a noble sacrifice on his part!

Obama is still holding the Big Beaver party, I mean, the big Bieber party at the WH.

All that Beaver, I mean Bieber, is sticking in the craw of honest tax payers, who will not be at the party, but will pay for whatever STDs (stinking tax dollars) blow out of it

Personally, every single bus of kids and parents should get their tour of the WH, before a penny of sequester bucks goes to stoke the Beaver, I mean Bieber

entagor on April 3, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Initially I thought this was just a case where, if Bush had done it, we’d be praising it.

But then it dawned me how truly minuscule this giveback is. Obama is going to be making God-knows-how-many tens of thousands of dollars on speeches, all because he was President. If he wants to make a gesture, he should either give back all of his salary (maybe half would be OK), or nothing at all.

What I also don’t like about it is that it confirms my prejudices of the way black people deal with money. Within their extended family, they give generously — perhaps reluctantly, or angrily, but they do it. But outside that group, they’re stingy as hell. That’s why you find black celebrities giving .002% of their earnings to charity, and why tip-dependent cabbies, waiters, etc. avoid black customers. A 5% giveback seems very much in keeping with that tradition.

You have a point but if you get down the food chain far enough, you will have blacks help you. I got kind help once or twice.

Leaving politics aside, this highlights how difficult it is to follow Jesus — who charged us to help others. The widow with her one coin and the exhortation about “whatever you do unto the least of these..” (Matthew 25:45) come to mind.

If I were POTUS, it would be tempting to give back 100% at the award of one month’s pay to each state. For PR, having a drawing between unemployed claim numbers and new business licenses would earn lots of goodwill. Really though, that $30 or $40K s month could change the trajectory of lives of normal people who might win it.

The waste and opulence is another whole issue but it isn’t just the WH. We never elect people like Mahatma Gandhi.
