A blessed Easter to all our readers

posted at 12:01 am on March 31, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.  As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” — Mark 16 1-7

For this year’s Easter post, I’d like to go back to the homily at last year’s papal Mass.  In his 2012 Urbi et Orbi address, now-Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI proclaimed Surrexit Christus, spes mea (Christ, my hope, has risen), and then explained how each of us in the Christian faith relives the experience of Mary Magdalene on this day:

Every Christian relives the experience of Mary Magdalene. It involves an encounter which changes our lives: the encounter with a unique Man who lets us experience all God’s goodness and truth, who frees us from evil not in a superficial and fleeting way, but sets us free radically, heals us completely and restores our dignity. This is why Mary Magdalene calls Jesus “my hope”: he was the one who allowed her to be reborn, who gave her a new future, a life of goodness and freedom from evil. “Christ my hope” means that all my yearnings for goodness find in him a real possibility of fulfilment: with him I can hope for a life that is good, full and eternal, for God himself has drawn near to us, even sharing our humanity.

But Mary Magdalene, like the other disciples, was to see Jesus rejected by the leaders of the people, arrested, scourged, condemned to death and crucified. It must have been unbearable to see Goodness in person subjected to human malice, truth derided by falsehood, mercy abused by vengeance. With Jesus’ death, the hope of all those who had put their trust in him seemed doomed. But that faith never completely failed: especially in the heart of the Virgin Mary, Jesus’ Mother, its flame burned even in the dark of night. In this world, hope can not avoid confronting the harshness of evil. It is not thwarted by the wall of death alone, but even more by the barbs of envy and pride, falsehood and violence. Jesus passed through this mortal mesh in order to open a path to the kingdom of life. For a moment Jesus seemed vanquished: darkness had invaded the land, the silence of God was complete, hope a seemingly empty word.

And lo, on the dawn of the day after the Sabbath, the tomb is found empty. Jesus then shows himself to Mary Magdalene, to the other women, to his disciples. Faith is born anew, more alive and strong than ever, now invincible since it is based on a decisive experience: “Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own champion, slain, now lives to reign”. The signs of the resurrection testify to the victory of life over death, love over hatred, mercy over vengeance: “The tomb the living did enclose, I saw Christ’s glory as he rose! The angels there attesting, shroud with grave-clothes resting”.

Dear brothers and sisters! If Jesus is risen, then – and only then – has something truly new happened, something that changes the state of humanity and the world. Then he, Jesus, is someone in whom we can put absolute trust; we can put our trust not only in his message but in Jesus himself, for the Risen One does not belong to the past, but is present today, alive. Christ is hope and comfort in a particular way for those Christian communities suffering most for their faith on account of discrimination and persecution. And he is present as a force of hope through his Church, which is close to all human situations of suffering and injustice.

May you have a blessed Easter rejoicing in the presence of Jesus Christ in your lives.  I’m including one of my favorite hymns, which our church will sing today and throughout this season until Pentecost.  Unfortunately, I do not have a recording of our parish’s choir singing Tom Conry’s “Roll Away the Stone,” but this version is not bad at all:

Maybe no one on staff is a practicing Jew who has the best standing on which to write a thread? I don’t know. Someone on the other thread about the series The Bible mentioned the idea of someone Jewish doing a series on the Hebrew Scriptures, that it would be better than having Christians undertake such a venture. I would love seeing that, and would certainly tune in.

Seems odd you would spend so much time and energy attacking people you don’t know who are mostly just wishing one-another a happy day.

steebo77 on March 31, 2013 at 11:39 AM

I don’t attack only Christianity steebo. I speak out against ALL religion. The majority of persons here just happen to be Christians and so I speak in that context, plus I used to be a Christian so it’s what I’m most knowledgeable about.

SauerKraut537 on March 31, 2013 at 11:44 AM

They’ve done Christmas stuff in the past too. I wonder if they’ve ever done Hindu or Buddhist themed pages?

I’d be happy if they did none of them because then whiny religious folks wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

You guys get so easily offended… “Whoa is me! They’re not celebrating the death of someone so my sins could be washed away!”

SauerKraut537 on March 31, 2013 at 11:15 AM

I’m an atheist. Therefore, my opinions are from both a childhood steeped in religion, and from an adulthood that let me make up my own mind. Personally, I choose to rejoice in others’ happiness rather than complain that they are not “me”.

Frankly, I think it’s a bitter pill to swallow if you assume the position that people are celebrating death, rather than either a man’s life lived purposefully, or Spring’s birth (bunnies/eggs), or hey, a new day dawns and you’re alive!

Peace.

My life’s never been better. I’m much less vocal than I used to be though… Every once in a while I jump back into the debate and voice my opinion. Mostly after I’ve heard some overly religious sorts spout some nugget of religious inanity…

I’m getting to the point where I don’t speak up about it as much anymore but I feel this urge to answer inane religious comments. ;-)

So, yes. You’re preaching. We heard you, we don’t believe as you do, yet you keep pushing among us who joined together according to our beliefs. You’re the one in our face and remaining, harping and preaching.

why choose this day?

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on March 31, 2013 at 12:05 PM

because people are listening/reading?

I never converted from atheists debating me, I converted by listening to atheists talking to other theists and being an impartial judge of what was said… The act of arguing makes people’s beliefs harder to change, but while I’m talking directly to CW or steebo or others, I’m really talking to others who are just reading. I know I’ll never “reach” any of these people but there are others on the fence who aren’t “invested” in the argument who can actually listen and hear what I’m saying.

I imagine most all I say to the uber religious here sounds like what the parents sounded like in Charlie Brown TV shows… Waa waah wa waaahhh wah. They can’t “hear” or “listen” because of their interest in the fight.

But I hear you… I know it seems counterproductive but there it is. Psychology is counter intuitive sometimes. ;-)

Deep down they know G-d is real….on these threads there is a mixture of their desire to convince themselves(they know they aren’t changing minds here) and their own nasty ugly dispositions.

A Happy and Blessed Easter to everyone.

Yep, that’s one of my favorites also. I am finding this day exhilarating and hopeful, I’m going to hang on to that feeling as long as I can.

Cindy Munford on March 31, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Why are so many non believers filled with such hatred and animus? God loves you anyway and gave his only Son so that you might have eternal life. Whether you accept that or not, does not change the faith and convictions of those who do believe.

fight like a girl on March 31, 2013 at 12:55 PM

And a thread dedicated to the furtherment of religious belief where people can live in an echo chamber celebrating the death and supposed resurrection of an idol isn’t preaching?

SauerKraut537 on March 31, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Friends — and many of us know each other a long time — wishing each other Happy Easter isn’t preaching. You said something earlier about semantics? The only way this became ‘preaching’ on the part of any Christians here is because you came in seeking an argument from the outset. Without you doing that, the thread would likely have been simply Happy Easter, we’re have beer, wine, sangria, and lots of food. Except for you, that’s where most of the post would have remained. Again — you are the one instigating any ‘preaching’ on our part. None of us wanted a fight on this High Day, but you keep trying to offend us and force yourself on us. We didn’t ask for this; you imposed yourself into what was meant to be a peaceful happy thread among friends.

Your reason for invading here and sticking around might backfire. Those you hope to impress might ask of us, curious of our faith. I’m curious, too: of all the sites out there, why did you pick this one?

I guess, to put your motive succinctly, it would be, “If I don’t like it, you’re not allowed to enjoy it, either.”

I don’t know how many of you have heard of Jim and Penny Caldwell.

They believe they have discovered the real Mt. Sinai. They have a lot of youtube videos and a lot of photographic evidence of so many wonderful things. Including the split rock that Moses struck… 4 stories high. This interview is a few hours and filled with photographs and video. They snuck into areas many many times.

This whole area looks like a Hollywood stage set of the Old Testament. It is so incredible. The real Mount Sinai (black on top), a cave directly across on the neighboring mountain (Elisha’s cave), old foundations at the bottom of the mountain (Moses built an alter and gave sacrifices) and a large split rock 4 stories high several miles from the mountain… with rock smoothed (as though by water) coming out of it and a large dry lake bed beneath. and so much more. Detailed information with detailed photos and video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9IjIrxun40&feature=endscreen&NR=1

What is amazing to me is.. people will believe in anything. NASA finds some rock in the antarctic and they say it proves life on Mars. There are TV shows on ghosts, UFO conspiracies and so much more and yet.. here is all this Biblical evidence just sitting in the desert and only now do we hear about it!?

I don’t have to convince myself of anything at all… You’re the one who keeps going to church to be indoctrinated and inculcated every Sunday. I used to, but no more. There is no good reason to believe the tales of religious institutions, at all.

Think about this a second. You are aware that the Koran claims to be the perfect word of the creator of the universe, right? You’re aware that once having heard this possibility and rejecting it, that you’re destined for an eternity in hell. Needless to say, you and I both are going to hell if this is true.

As crazy as it sounds, imagine if Islam is true and hold that vision in mind for a second, and first appreciate how little sleep you’ve lost over this possibility. Just feel in this moment how carefree you are, and will continue to be in the face of this possibility.

They’re all wrong, not just the ones you don’t subscribe to CW.

SauerKraut537 on March 31, 2013 at 11:27 AM

And yet I am sure none of us feel the need to go to Islamic related religious posts and keep telling the Muslims that they are wrong. Probably because we don’t need to convince ourselves that they are wrong.

Happy Easter to all from an agnostic with a church-going wife and kids; I even attended church.

I had a few Peeps this morning, and “accidentally” ate the ears from the chocolate bunny of my middle son. I also had ham…is that ok on Easter Sunday?

Bishop on March 31, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Easter Sunday Traditions:

Lamb is traditional signifying the Pascal (Christian) Lamb.

Ham is also traditional signifying later Christian freedom from the old Dietary Laws of Judaism.

(My mother alternated each year as I was growing up.)

Hope you have a great day with your family.

AZfederalist on March 31, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Happy Easter everyone..He is risen and alive and well in this very sin filled world…just wanted to post some lyrics from my favorite worship song..

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands
By: Martin Luther

Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands
For our offenses given;
But now at God’s right hand he stands
And brings us life from heaven.
Therefore let us joyful be
And sing to God right thankfully
Loud sons of alleluia!
Alleluia!

It was a strange and dreadful strife
When life and death contended;
The victory remained with life,
The reign of death was ended.
Holy Scripture plainly says
That death is swallowed up by death,
Its sting is lost forever.
Alleluia!

Here the true Paschal Lamb we see,
Whom God so freely gave us;
He died on the accursed tree
So strong his love to save us.
See, his blood now marks our door;
Faith points to it; death passes over,
And Satan cannot harm us.
Alleluia!

So let us keep the festival
To which the Lord invites us;
Christ is himself the joy of all,
The sun that warms and lights us.
Now his grace to us imparts
Eternal sunshine to our hearts;
The night of sin is ended.
Alleluia!

Then let us feast this Easter Day
On Christ, the bread of heaven;
The Word of grace has purged away
The old and evil leaven.
Christ alone our souls will feed;
He is our meat and drink indeed;
Faith lives upon no other!
Alleluia!
