CBS poll shows support for gun control push fading

posted at 9:21 am on March 26, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

A week ago, CNN reported that its polling showed that momentum for gun control had halted, and support had begun to decline, falling below a majority.  Today’s CBS poll reaches the same conclusion, leaving the soon-to-be-filibustered bill in the US Senate in danger of becoming an orphan:

Soon after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced an assault weapons ban would not be part of a gun control bill, a new CBS News poll shows support for stricter gun control laws overall has dropped since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Currently, support for stricter gun control laws stands at 47 percent today, down from a high of 57 percent just after the shootings. Thirty-nine percent want those laws kept as they are, and another 11 percent want them made less strict.

Today’s level of 47% for making gun laws more stringent is the lowest it has been since April of last year (39%).  The endorsement of the status quo (39%) is likewise the highest it has been since the same point in time.  Eleven years ago, the split was 56/30 in favor of tougher gun laws — and that was while the federal assault-weapons ban was still in place.

Furthermore, the push for stronger laws appears to be a partisan and regional issue, but not quite in the manner portrayed by gun-control activists. Only in the northeast does gun control get a majority, at 58/30, even though the incident that has acted as a catalyst took place in a Northeastern state with an assault-weapons ban already in place.  In the Midwest and South, the splits are virtual ties, belying the notion that this is somehow a “Southern problem.”  It’s also within the margin of error among independents at 43/39, and Republicans are solidly opposed at 29/52.  Democrats, on the other hand, want stricter gun control by more than a 2:1 ratio, 66/30.

It seems clear that the fundamentals on gun control haven’t really changed all that much.  However, we do have an indication that the gun-rights message may be getting past the media filters … even at MSNBC:

Don’t tell us that Al Sharpton and MSNBC are hypocrites?  Noooo!!  The Reverend Al opened his show by praising President Obama’s efforts to promote tougher gun control laws.  But 28 minutes into the show, a commercial appeared for, of all things  . . . Henry Repeating Rifles.

Go to Henry Rifle’s website and you’ll find one rifle described as “big, brutal and beautiful” and noting that it fires ammunition “said to have killed more game, big and small, and more men, good and bad, than any other in existence.”  Another model offered for sale, the AR-7, is based on a military rifle, Henry emphasizing that given its lightweight design “you can carry a large quantity of ammunition.”  Oh the horror!

Mark Finklestein skewers Sharpton and MSNBC for hypocrisy, but a better question might be why Henry is buying advertising on MSNBC at all.

This as well as things like drones and abortion is why polls are meaningless to base public policy on. Polls are a snapshot into public opinion at best at worse they are swkewed to give the pollsters desire for public poloicy a fig leaf.

The more people learn about drones like via Rand Paul’s filibuster the more polls change. The drone policy had a 50pts poll swing after the filibuster. this poll shows the same message the more people DEBATE the policy the more people are against gun control. the same thing happened with abortion, climate change etc.

Even SSM is gaining ground because no one is debating it. they are using polls to show its a fate accompli then silencing anyone that things SSM is wrong. Its settled sience kind of thing.

Anyone that uses polls to push policy or a candidate is a class A idiot.

Well, the Chinese had to be informed that they had murdered 500 million of their own citizens before they reconsidered their one child policy. If that is any indication of the Marxist mentality, I would say that at least another 50 million American Children will have to die before it reaches a level where the conversation will take place about ending abortion.

All in a gun free zone, along with all who died at Columbine, Aurora theater, VA Tech, and pretty much every other mass shooting.
How many more must die before the libtards and politicians do something about the gun free zones that are killing so many?

New Life Church (NOT a gun free zone) did NOT count as a mass shooting because a volunteer armed usher/security guard shot the attacker before he could kill more than 2 people.
How many more must die before the libtards and politicians realize concealed carry saves lives?

Depending on whose numbers you believe, 200K to 2 MILLION innocent lives saved every year by guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens.
You’d think that many lives saved from criminals would have been enough….

“Mark Finklestein skewers Sharpton and MSNBC for hypocrisy, but a better question might be why Henry is buying advertising on MSNBC at all.”

Lots of reasons.

- Get in their faces, is one.
- Interrupt their narrative, is another.
- Invade their space. That’s always fun.
- Annoy the heck out of them. I liked how the ad tweaked them.
- Set them up for charges of hypocrisy.
- Sell guns. There’s a chance not all ten of Sharpton’s viewers are anti-guns.

Probably the most sensible thing you’ve said on the site.

The politicians do not give a rip about black children when they’re done with getting their pictures taken for campaign season. Including solid Democrat pols voted in by a solid Democrat electorate.

I have never, ever heard of any Democrat pol held accountable by another pol or the media for black kids in his city/state dying like flies at a pesticide testing field. They are treated as more disposable than Kleenex.

MelonCollie on March 26, 2013 at 3:05 PM

Just a minor point. The AR-7 is a survival rifle that breaks down into components that can be all stored in a waterproof stock. It’s been around a long, long time. The reason you can carry a “large quantity of ammunition” is that the ammo is .22 caliber – a teeny tiny round. 50 rounds of .22 probably weighs less than your cell phone.

Cricket624 on March 26, 2013 at 5:02 PM

One more point, you never seen a little black kid shooting up his school.

Yet way, way more of them are dying from shootings than the white kids.

So why do liberals make gun control an issue only when white kids get killed?
