Video: Jim Carrey dumps on gun-rights supporters

posted at 11:21 am on March 25, 2013 by Allahpundit

A plea to protect America’s children from one of the country’s most famous vaccine skeptics. There’s no point in critiquing the vid, really. Political humor online is a tribal thing: You need to be very, very funny to make the other tribe laugh rather than sneer. But Carrey is very funny usually. Despite his cheap, stupid nastiness towards gun-rights supporters on Twitter, I figured this would be worth a few laughs. And it was — for 10 seconds, during the “Sam Elliott” cameo, which is mainly a sight gag. As for the song, it’s neither funny nor biting. It’s basically an extended dick joke of the sort that’s been thrown at gun owners for decades. If you’re not playing for laughs then presumably you’re playing for emotional impact, to hit your opponent hard — but he’s not playing for either here. It’s a pure novelty, almost to prove that Carrey’s capable of writing a serviceable country tune rather than to push an anti-gun message. (The Funny or Die website trumpets that the song’s available for download on iTunes.) The cultural references too are so dated that at times this feels like a lost “In Living Color” sketch. Heston’s been dead for five years and stepped down as NRA chief five years before that. “Hee Haw” has been off the air since the early 1990s. (Although, of course, some over-the-top dig at southern culture was to be expected here.) The guy couldn’t even work up a Wayne LaPierre impression for his big contribution to the gun debate? Knowing that he was kissing off a chunk of his base, you’d think he would have tried harder.

Elsewhere in gun-control news today, Tom Coburn predicts that some sort of bill on universal background checks will pass the Senate. The possible linchpin? John McCain. Gulp.

It wasn’t funny.

I figured this would be worth a few laughs. And it was — for 10 seconds, during the “Sam Elliott” cameo, which is mainly a sight gag.

Not even that. Gandhi and Lennon came the closest.

He certainly feels secure in his career, doesn’t he, insulting the paying customers this way. I vote with my wallet, and I’m not buying anything he’s trying to sell from now on.

This is what happens when you’re irrelevant.

And manic depressive.

And willing to abandoned an autistic child.

He’s flailing for an audience. Wonderstone was an unmitigated disaster and more than likely froze a few options he had.

So he’s got to go hard prog, hoping they’ll support Kick-Ass 2.

budfox on March 25, 2013 at 11:26 AM

But he won’t say a bad thing about Kick Ass 2, a supposedly violent movie in which he has a role.

I hope Hit Girl takes his character out in the film.

portlandon on March 25, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Yeah, that was a disaster. Jim Carrey’s been hit or miss lately. For every Yes Man and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, there’s an I Love You Phillip Morris and The Number 23. But these were released before he revealed himself to be an anti-2nd Amendment, condescending a-hole on Twitter. Luckily for him, his next movie is Kick-Ass 2 which is all but guaranteed to be a hit, although ironically, it promotes gun violence.

Doughboy on March 25, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Oh, hellz yes! Drag out the bodies of dead children and dance on’em. That’ll show you’ve got “relevancy”, jim.

When actors become irrelevant, they become political operatives. George Clooney just hasn’t realized his irrelevancy yet, whereas Jim Carrey is embracing his.

RIP Jim Carrey’s career. Hits & misses – mostly misses. Generally overrated.

The only unique role that seemed suited for him was Liar Liar.
Everything else he did was either terrible or could have been handled as capably by another actor.

22044 on March 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Well, it’s not as skin-crawlingly creepy as his Emma Stone obsession video (google that if your breakfast is digested).

But it is just as lame. What a puke.

M240H on March 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Not going to bother clicking it.

Feel no need to be lectured about the evils of my culture by some nitwit Canadian comedian who wants to jump onto the latest celebrity bandwagon issue.

And isn’t Carrey the same guy who was stalking that red-headed (and much younger) actress Emma Something-or-other, and writing on Twitter or one of those sites about his desire to marry her and have red-headed children with her, or some such nonsense? I thought I read something about his blathering, and about how the woman (who didn’t even know Carrey) was embarrassed by his weird obsession with her.

Does Carey employ armed guards? If so, do his comments include them as well or are they exempted because he’s so special in his own mind?

Kingfisher on March 25, 2013 at 11:35 AM

It’s a pure novelty, almost to prove that Carrey’s capable of writing a serviceable country tune rather than to push an anti-gun message.

I prefer the term “anti-freedom” message.

I wonder if he thinks all American live in gated communities and can pay for armed security?

EdmundBurke247 on March 25, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Within the last decade?

ninjapirate on March 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

I did enjoy Yes Man. Not the Liar Liar-type comedy the trailers tried to make it out to be, but a very enjoyable film nonetheless. Of course that had just as much to do with Zooey Deschanel’s presence as it did with Carrey’s.

Carrey’s dilemma is that he’s 51 years old now. He can’t do Ace Ventura anymore. And while he does have decent dramatic acting chops(Eternal Sunshine for example), people just don’t wanna pay to see those movies of his.

Carrey was also the guy on the old show In Living Color who mocked gays in a scene in a deli. After every sentence he spoke in the skit, he added, “And I’m gay.”

Now, THAT was funny. As for the rest of his career, not so much.

Ah, thank you. Emma Stone. Knew it was something like that. Didn’t know there was video of his weirdness. Think I’ll pass on that too. What I’ve already read is creepy enough. The guy needs a qualified psychiatrist (and it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep him away from cameras).

I never found him funny, either. He just was always too over the top. I sat next to him at a diner once. He was with his ex wife or gf, Lauren something or the other. There were few people there and no one was bothering him. He was extremely low key.

Blake on March 25, 2013 at 11:40 AM

A macaca would give Jim Carrey a good run for both style and acting skills. His only two good movies were “Mask” and “Eternal Sunshine”, and only because they were saved by his female counterparts.

Archivarix on March 25, 2013 at 11:40 AM

If I didn’t know better, I’d say he’s living out his own real-life Truman Show.

platypus on March 25, 2013 at 11:41 AM

A tediously typical story of career collapse and the compensations sought in all the wrong places. But where else can he turn but to worn-out lefty tribal tropes? He’s flailing not just for relevance and revival but to feel worthy and loved by those around him, a yearning he’s never been able to fill and never will. His effort to prove his “courage” and radical individuality proves only his shallowness and confusion about the meanings. A hyper-kinetic poster child for the lost children of the Left.

If you were to call, “Will the real Jim Carrey please stand up!” he couldn’t find the floor.

Liam on March 25, 2013 at 11:46 AM

AP, you need to raise your standards for humor. When has Jim Carrey ever been funny?

Not to mention he’s a flaming hypocrite preaching gun control yet making money off of his violence-laden movies. He’s getting the attention that he wants, or rather needs.

conservative pilgrim on March 25, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Meh. I’m still waiting for the funny to kick in…

All I needed to know about Jim Carey on this was his viewing John Lennon as being equal to Abraham Lincoln and Gandhi. Give me a break. He is aware of course of how much Lincoln favored guns, right? I’m not just talking about Abe hunting or supporting the Union troops, but stories of how he personally took part in demonstrations of the Winchester, Gatling gun, etc. and the glowing comments he had about these weapons.

JohnAGJ on March 25, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Not surprised that this flop of a comedian veers leftie. His career is in the dumpster and the last time he looked funny was when the photographer came for his HS senior picture.

You’re as abandoned as a certain child and your show sunk like the Titanic. Going anti-freedom will do exactly squadiddly to boost your ratings or make you anything but a grovelling little toad with all the humor rating of South Park.

The entire town’s police force showed up in three minutes.

Liam on March 25, 2013 at 12:01 PM

If I didn’t know better, I’d say he’s living out his own real-life Truman Show.

Too many actors just have to inflict their political point of view to assure themselves of personal intellectual relevancy because they spend their profession regurgitating what other people wrote, doing what other people direct them to do while acting as other people on screen or on stage.

And their egos typically feel the need to conform with Hollywierd group think to remain accepted and popular within the tight circle of leftist movers and shakers and still be able to land high paying roles.

I understand its still tough to be a known conservative in Hollywierd and get meaningful work, unless you are already an established and bankable star, more or less.

hawkeye54 on March 25, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Great career move, Carrey. This should make you as popular as the Dixie Chicks.

I hope that Mayor Bloomberg and Mr. Carrey do not plan a trip down to Mississippi any time soon. Some of my neighbors are liable to tell them how they feel about their attempts at gun confiscation.

Now that’s a bit extreme. I mean why penalize them by taking their guns? All those anti-Second folks at the Brady Campaign and Gabby Giffords’ organization should load a card table and laptop into the back of the Prius or ZipCar and head down to the ghettos, set up outside the local bodaga, and help gang members register their weapons. But, of course, with the mandatory background checks. What could possibly go wrong.

I’m neither southern nor a gun owner, but why is it that celebrities always insult “redneck” gun owners, when most violent gun crime occurs in urban areas? (The question is rhetorical, obviously). I’d feel much safer around a bunch of southerners with shotguns than walking through a bad urban neighborhood. And most of the mass shootings seem to involve wealthy suburban teenagers or young adults.

And Jim Carrey is starring in Kick-Ass 2. If it’s anything like the first one, I’m sure it’s a delightful family film with a positive message, and completely free of any guns or violence.

Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, before she became a world-renowned “expert” on autism and vaccines, was best known for stripping for Playboy and publishing a book of fart jokes.

I recall seeing Jenny McCarthy on Larry King’s show several years ago, talking about how she had “cured” her son’s autism. Reminded me of Mia Farrow, who wrote in her autobiography that she believed one of her sons (w/Andre Previn) had been autistic as an infant, but she had “cured” him of it by taking him into the attic for weeks and blowing bubbles in his face. Seriously.

Other sites made this point, but to start here as well…”Which ahs killed more children, assault weapons or anti-vaccine hysteria, Jim?”

Or even more horribly, which is more likely to start a continent-spanning pandemic: some nut with a gun or a child turned into a pint-sized Typhoid Mary?

Literally all it could take would be one unvaxed brat catching some oddball disease from the child of an illegal immigrant. That this hasn’t happened yet with 30 million aliens is a minor miracle.

I guess since his career flopped he thought this would give him some new attention. He’s not getting it at the box office.

I honestly had forgotten about him.

Never thought the guy was funny at all. When actors can only ever play one character, it gets old fast.
Mask was the only movie I ever saw of his. The effects were good for the time, but he wasn’t funny in that either.

So he’s doing this for the kids? Wonder how he feels about abortion. I wonder how many of his own kids he had his girlfriends abort.
Wonder how high the walls are around his mansion? How much security he has.

Well, maybe not a lot now since he’s not even making movies.

I never thought Carrey was that funny. I don’t think I made it all the way through any of his movies, so I’m sure I wouldn’t make it through this video either. His acting always seemed too contrived to be genuinely funny. He was amusing, but not LOL funny, at least not to me. He seems edgy and disturbed.

Add another name to the list of people I will never pay to see in a movie again. Of Course I am sure he will not miss it. If there are a lot of people that think about this the same way I do then the Studios will be the ones noticing.
