Video: Jim Carrey dumps on gun-rights supporters

posted at 11:21 am on March 25, 2013 by Allahpundit

A plea to protect America’s children from one of the country’s most famous vaccine skeptics. There’s no point in critiquing the vid, really. Political humor online is a tribal thing: You need to be very, very funny to make the other tribe laugh rather than sneer. But Carrey is very funny usually. Despite his cheap, stupid nastiness towards gun-rights supporters on Twitter, I figured this would be worth a few laughs. And it was — for 10 seconds, during the “Sam Elliott” cameo, which is mainly a sight gag. As for the song, it’s neither funny nor biting. It’s basically an extended dick joke of the sort that’s been thrown at gun owners for decades. If you’re not playing for laughs then presumably you’re playing for emotional impact, to hit your opponent hard — but he’s not playing for either here. It’s a pure novelty, almost to prove that Carrey’s capable of writing a serviceable country tune rather than to push an anti-gun message. (The Funny or Die website trumpets that the song’s available for download on iTunes.) The cultural references too are so dated that at times this feels like a lost “In Living Color” sketch. Heston’s been dead for five years and stepped down as NRA chief five years before that. “Hee Haw” has been off the air since the early 1990s. (Although, of course, some over-the-top dig at southern culture was to be expected here.) The guy couldn’t even work up a Wayne LaPierre impression for his big contribution to the gun debate? Knowing that he was kissing off a chunk of his base, you’d think he would have tried harder.

Elsewhere in gun-control news today, Tom Coburn predicts that some sort of bill on universal background checks will pass the Senate. The possible linchpin? John McCain. Gulp.

You mean the movie with lots of violence and a gun- wielding little girl?

ptcamn on March 25, 2013 at 12:36 PM

I was sure their activism was almost gone since the messiah took the reins. They’re on a roll.

Hey Hollywood. How about you make a movie?

You know the kind you like. A war begins that you say a US President is responsible for. Let’s see. You need a main character that understands the culture of a foreign land and protests the US involvement. You make insinuations that US companies are making fortunes in this country torn by civil war and use graphic recreations of the atrocities being committed there to really make the US and it’s President look bad. You could call it “Syria”. Maybe get George Clooney and Matt Damon?

When the movie gets ready to be released you can have the main actor and the movies director go on all the late night shows and bemoan what your president has done to this once beautiful country that you’re depicting in this movie whose box office receipts will add to your millions.

What? You don’t do that with democrats. Oh! Oh, sorry.

Never mind.

UltimateBob on March 25, 2013 at 12:56 PM

I guess this would have been funny if it was 1994. Charleton Heaston has been dead for quite a while now. I was just waiting for a few more dated jokes or one liners like “How Rude!” “Did I do that?”or my personal favorite “smoooking!”

OliverB on March 25, 2013 at 1:02 PM

I’ve seen exactly two movies with this jerk in them. One was The Mask, which took the concept of a genuinely good and scary horror/SF film from the early Sixties (aka Eyes of Hell) and turned it into a bad knockoff of a Tex Avery cartoon. BTW, the original was not a comedy, nor was it intended to be.

The other was the Val Kilmer Batman Forever, where he played the Riddler. His version of Edward Negma was even worse than Kilmer’s version of Bruce Wayne.

The fact that he’s now climbed on a typical Hollywood lefty bandwagon not only doesn’t surprise me, I consider it just more evidence that he’s one of those people who will do anything for attention. So all these years I’ve been ignoring him have apparently not been wasted.

Say g’night, Gracie.

CurtZHP on March 25, 2013 at 1:08 PM

Wait, you mean a has been Canadian “actor”, PeeWee Herman wannabe doesn’t like us hicks in the US or our Constitution and the rights it confers, and his idea of funny is to mock a dead actor?!?!?!? Go back to da great White North den eh…Oh, that’s right, he’d be taxed to death if he did. Guess I’ll have to be content to be a “heartless m*therf*cker” and he’ll have to whine about it.

Maybe he can make a face.

In fact, he and Jon Stewart can co-host The Daily Show, and make their funny faces, to – you know – let us know when they’re being funny.

RadClown on March 25, 2013 at 1:20 PM

As an actor….(using the mordern definition) are you pretending to care Jim? Will you refuse roles in violent movies, appologize for glamourising violience, perhaps retire in protest of the Hollywood’s portrayal of a violent America?
You have more blood on your hands then the stereotypes in your video.
How ’bout you do a hilarious video about Chicago black on black murder. There’s a laugh a minute, and closer to your target.

Sorry for saying target Jim, I didn’t mean to offend.

Ufdaubet on March 25, 2013 at 1:25 PM

I’ve noticed that Carrey seems to be feeling a bit irrelevant lately. I’ve noticed that he has made some changes in his life.

Well he just sealed it by cutting off millions of people.

Jim just committed career suicide.

It was fun while it lasted.

Gatekeeper on March 25, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Jim Carrey was funny and relevant on ‘In Living Color’. He has not been funny or relevant since. Sadly, he still thinks he is both.

maryo on March 25, 2013 at 1:28 PM

You talk about him being funny usually….sorry but in his long dreary career I found exactly 1 movie worth watching and that was “The Majestic” everything else has either been juvenile or flat boring. That being said I refuse to take advice from any person who spends their professional life pretending to be someone else.

JKotthoff on March 25, 2013 at 1:31 PM

I’ll listen to the hypocrites in Hollywood when they give up having personal security. You see, they are more important than the single woman who is maybe a nurse or single mom who live/work in high crime areas. They have the protection they feel us commoners shouldn’t.

Minnfidel on March 25, 2013 at 1:35 PM

…our Constitution and the rights it confers…

PatriotPete on March 25, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Actually, our Constitution does not confer rights. Our rights come from natural law via our Creator, and as such cannot be conferred or taken away by any document. The Constitution spells out for our government how it must behave toward us in regard to those rights. The document is not addressed to us by our government. It’s addressed to our government by WE THE PEOPLE.

CurtZHP on March 25, 2013 at 1:43 PM

May be an issue of semantics but in DC vs Heller the Opinion of the Supreme Court states, as in this passage, “This holding is not only consistent with, but positively suggests, that the Second Amendment confers an individual right to keep and bear arms”

Check out the comments on Funny or Die. Not exactly winning an new fans with his sudden bigotry for gun owners.

Obama and Eric Holder using their Fast & Furious program to illegally ship thousands of “assualt” weapons to the drug cartels in Mexico have been involved in the deaths of at least 200 Mexican citizens and 2 American law enforcement officers.

I can’t wait for Jim’s video taking Obama to task for these illegal actions and deaths.

his schtick got old back in the 90′s. Now he just seems bitter. Sad unfunny man you are Jim Carrey.

PatriotPete on March 25, 2013 at 2:10 PM

Courts don’t tell me what the constitution says or doesn’t say. They don’t need to. I understand plain English. What the 2nd amendment says is, in part:

“…the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” (emphasis mine, of course)

That sounds like it was written by folks who knew where our rights really come from.

gryphon202 on March 25, 2013 at 3:19 PM

So a man who makes dirty films that are marketed for children is absolutely furious at gun owners, because we don’t protect our children.

Mr Carrey, I have faithfully protected my children from your films.
Except for The Truman Show, which wasn’t too bad.

No surprise there. The great unwashed have resisted the wisdom of McCain

Vile and ingrate! too late thou shalt repent
The base Injustice thou hast done my Love:
Yes, thou shalt know, spite of thy past Distress,
And all those Ills which thou so long hast mourn’d;
Heav’n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn’d,
Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn’d.

entagor on March 25, 2013 at 3:29 PM

At least Carrey doesn’t pretend to tolerate some types of firearms. Points for honesty, there.

No points for humor, though. The whole bit is decades out of date. I guess that was his point, but he has no idea what’s relevant to most people. His humor has always been physical gags, they don’t show any real understanding of America. The one exception to that was The Truman Show, which may be his most conservative-leaning film. A man gets tired of the surveillance state and tries to get away? That’s a story fighting against centralized government.

hawksruleva on March 25, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Here is an idea that Hollywood could really get behind, two things that they love best, taxes and gun control.

Let’s put a $1 million tax on every single irresponsible gun shot in a TV show or movie. A portrayal of an illegal gun shot would be taxed at $10 million for each gun shot. This tax would be placed on every new TV show or movie and every re-showing of any TV show or movie no matter how old.

Doing this would allow Hollywood to start paying their fair share!

He’s not acting, I’ve never thought he was funny, and he’s never going to find his star as bright as it was during “The Truman Show”.

He’s a B or C lister at this point.

But he bowed at the homosexual altar in Hollywood several years ago with Ewan McGregor so maybe that will help get him some roles.

Sherman1864 on March 26, 2013 at 1:54 AM

What’s weird is the antiquated Hollywood stereotype of Southerners. As Mr. Carrey spent a good chunk of his Canadian childhood in a family that was itinerant, sometimes homeless, sometimes living in a car, it seems he would have more sympathy or even respect for Hee Haw’s concept of people who don’t have much, yet still find laughter and music living “low on the hog–down around the pig’s knuckles”.

Pretty solid songwriting & singing on Jim Carrey’s part. But, a couple laugh lines aside, the cliches are way dated and surprisingly lazy from a man who used to be 100% comedy innovation.

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on March 26, 2013 at 3:01 AM
