Video: Guy in Bloomberg gun-control ads breaks all the major rules of gun safety

posted at 10:01 pm on March 25, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

We’ve talked about this before. When it comes to gun safety, the physicians in the Democratic Party are not so into healing themselves.

In the latest example, we have Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s $12 million ads, which Emily Miller points out, break the three first rules of gun safety. The NRA isn’t just an association of those who treasure their Second Amendment rights. It’s also the biggest gun safety organization in the U.S., and it teaches these rules every day.

Mr. Bloomberg’s organization, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, produced two ads featuring a man holding a shotgun, wearing plaid flannel with a camouflage cap and sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck. While a child swings on a tire in the background, the man says, “I support comprehensive background checks so criminals and the dangerously mentally ill can’t buy guns.”

The ad does not specify if the man is an actor, but the text accompanying it says he is a “gun owner.” Either way, the man violates all three gun safety rules taught by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The first rule is to always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. In this case, the children are playing in the yard. Although the viewers can’t see what is to the side of the truck, the man should be pointing the muzzle in the air or at the ground.

The second NRA rule is always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

In the ad “Responsibility,” the man has his finger on the trigger, as if ready to shoot. While doing this, he says, “I believe in the Second Amendment, and I’ll fight to protect it. But with rights come responsibilities.” To make an ad demonstrating actual gun responsibility, the man would put a straight forefinger above the trigger guard to make sure he doesn’t accidentally touch the trigger.

In a second iteration of the ad, “Family,” Emily notes the bolt is closed, thereby leaving it uncertain whether the gun is loaded.

I really do hate to be a stickler, but if there’s one thing to be a stickler about, the basic rules of gun safety while you’re in an ad for alleged advocates of gun safety is a pretty good choice. Forgive me if I don’t feel like giving up my rights as a law-abiding citizen to a billionaire mayor who can’t instruct his recruits to keep their booger hooks off the bang switch. But by all means, continue to make laws without knowing jack about your subject. It always works so well.

H/t, the lovely Katie Pavlich, who reminds us of all the other dangerous advice gun-control advocates have been dispensing lately. As long as President Obama insists on acting like the world’s most overpaid traveling gun salesman, maybe his allies could stop teaching everyone the quickest route to maiming accidents?

Actually, if you look closely, his finger is behind the trigger guard, rather than on the trigger.

But spot on about having the action locked open and keeping it pointed in a safe direction. And what’s with the slug gun, it’s a shotgun with rifle sights. Plus, it looks like a youth model, short stock and barrel, what is that, his kid’s gun? Might be common in some parts of the country where deer hunting is only with slug guns, but not something you would see here in Texas. Rifles for deer, and bird shot guns for birds around here.

iurockhead on March 25, 2013 at 10:18 PM

It’s the easiest thing in the world to be a pessimist, and the least American. We’re optimists, and as tough as things are, as many skirmishes as we’ve lost, we haven’t lost this country to the left quite yet. If you had to choose between being them or us, you’d be crazy to choose being them. We’re going to win, and America is going to rise again.

Pessimism is a cop-out, an excuse to do nothing and wait for the end instead of figuratively fixing bayonets and charging head-long into the enemy. That military metaphor is no accident, because decades in the military taught me that “pessimism” is just another name for “failure.” You don’t always get to pick your enemy. You don’t always get to pick your situation. Your job is to take whatever you face, find your advantages, and exploit them to drive on to victory.

Schadenfreude on March 25, 2013 at 10:19 PM

I hope the NRA forces Bloomberg to reveal the actor’s identity. It’s yet another lie in a campaign of lies to try to tell us he’s a gun owner. King Mike must have phoned down to central casting and ordered up one white trash hick. The only thing Bloomberg knows about guns is how to hire them.

Although the viewers can’t see what is to the side of the truck, the man should be pointing the muzzle in the air or at the ground.

“WRONG!! You only point the muzzle in the air when someone is threatening you. You shoot off some rounds … until your shotgun is empty, just to show the criminal that you’re armed, though you might not be at this point … no matter. If the criminal still threatens your life you ask him to wait while you reload and squeeze off a few more rounds into the air. You can shoot in the air all you want. No one is up there. If things get worse then just reload again and fire off some rounds through a door. Any door will do.” — Vice Premier Joseph Biden

The reason is quite interesting:

“While I support and respect Mark Kelly’s 2nd Amendment rights to purchase, possess, and use firearms in a safe and responsible manner, his recent statements to the media made it clear that his intent in purchasing the Sig Sauer M400 5.56mm rifle from us was for reasons other then for his personal use,” MacKinlay said in the statement.

Dusty on March 25, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Where did Dominique Lane and De’Marquise Elkins get the guns to kill 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. When is that person going to be arrested for accessory to murder and violation of half dozen current laws of not selling to a 17 year old. What paperwork was filled for that gun and was it bought at a FFL dealer. Was bought out of the back of a van and what new law would have prevented that. Why did they have to get money at 9:00am in the morning and who is the drug dealer they owe it to.

tjexcite on March 25, 2013 at 11:24 PM

well, of course that’s the joke. The aim is simple here. Guns are Scary. Boy, look at that, here’s a Hunter with a Family in the background that looks like he could easy Shoot his Kids and Wife…Accidentally…oops

it is not carelessness on the part of Bloomberg’s group. They hate guns.

Also, this shows how important Universal Background Checks are to the control nuts. Comprehensive.

in the UK you have to prove to the local constable that you 1 need a gun and 2 that you are Qualified to have a gun

That is the goal

r keller on March 25, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Perhaps rule two should be modified (I mean, libs want to ‘modify’ the second amendment, right?). For the enlightened, tolerant libs, I will use the vernacular:

Instead of “Keep booger hook off bang switch”, rule two should be “Keep booger eaters off bang stick while pretending to be a gun advocate”.

There ya go, Bloomers.

What is it with these dems and their need to have their finger on the trigger!?! With all their declarations of concern for gun safety you would think they could get that it isn’t safe to do that & that it is best to point your gun in a safe direction. But, NO. They know it all. What these ad tells you is to not let Bloomberg & his friends have guns. They can’t learn.

No we may not. Bloomberg has to walk the walk. His bodyguards should only be allowed to use whistles, call boxes, and safe zones. They should be prepared to poop, pee, or vomit in order to protect his majesty from harm.

If worse comes to worse, they can stuff him into a 32oz cup and bundle him off to safety.

Any person throwing in with Bloomberg and his anti-Second Amendment efforts is either a fraud or dupe.

A man is judged by the totality of his actions. Mr. Bloomberg has aptly displayed he neither believes in individual freedom or personal liberty.

He’s the American equivalent of Hugo Chavez. A pint-sized dictator who seeks to control all aspects of our lives because he deems it necessary.

Every freedom loving American should recoil at his whimsical and farcical suggestions.

I would have to say I’m 100 per cent in favor of gun control – no nut should have a gun. Then it comes down to figuring out who is the nut, how much of a nut are they, does their level of “nuttism” require action on our part, and how to keep guns (or lethal weapons) out of their hands. With the number of domestic violence murders by gun in the US, I’d say we have not spread the net quite wide enough yet. The Second Amendment doesn’t make that distinction so maybe the definition of citizen should.

Bernfp on March 26, 2013 at 8:31 AM

I fully trust this regime to do the right thing on who should have guns.

Illegal aliens, gang bangers, mexican drug lords (we should even supply them directly), union thugs and democratic party officials are some that should be exempted from gun control and registration.

Obviously, republicans, farmers, hunters, libertarians, conservativs, church goers and any white color professiionals
must be registered, monitored and even home inspected. They are a serious threat to our safety.

Does seem kind of simple when you really boil it down to waht the real purpose of this legislation is, doesn’t it?

Universal background checks require universal registration. With any government registration, there is a fee. What will the annual gun registration fee be? $10, $100, $500? Can’t afford the registration fee? I guess you’ll just have to surrender your weapon. They won’t make it illegal to own a gun, just inconvenient.
