DWS: We need to make sure budget cuts won’t lower the “quality of life” on Capitol Hill

posted at 4:41 pm on March 22, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Shakin’ my head. Via National Review:

At a House hearing earlier this week, she worried that her staff is being “priced out” of a good meal due to price increases at the House cafeteria, and worried that a potential 8-percent budget cut for congressional offices would further lower “the quality of life” on Capitol Hill.

In one sense, I do understand what she’s saying, and it’s not a bad point: In the private sector, just as potential employees compete with one another to be the best possible candidate they can be, employers also compete with one another in terms of benefits, workplace environments, etcetera, to attract the best possible employees.

But this is the federal government, not the private sector, and while I am very much in favor of introducing certain free-market-minded reforms into the bureaucracy’s operations, the federal government has the all-too-convenient ability to essentially keep writing themselves checks to fund whatever it is they deem they need to be competitive — which probably explains why the government has a consistent tendency to compensate their employees with benefits much more lavish than those in the private sector. I’d rather the focus be on how to trim the federal government down to an affordable size, rather than making sure that aides can afford high-quality in-house lunches. Somehow, Sen. Rand Paul (and others) managed to return a major chunk of his annual office budget back to the Treasury a few weeks ago — I’m sure we can find some room for streamlining Congressional budgets somewhere.

she worried that her staff is being “priced out” of a good meal due to price increases at the House cafeteria

And actually, this is yet another talking point the Republicans can use;

Obama’s increased the price of food so much even highly paid congressional aides are having to cut back.

Talking about food inflation would have been devastating to Obama I think in the general election.

I have a little game I play. When I see a new topic on Hot Air I
scroll down to the article without reading who wrote it. Then I
try to guess who the author it.

I was wrong this time. I thought it was written by Allapundit.

That said, quit giving these people excuses for their behavior which is bankrupting this country. “Competition”? They are not
competing for jobs in the private sector. They make too much money. Personally, I think their cafeterias should serve the same
slop the school children get.

Amjean on March 22, 2013 at 5:10 PM

She’s breaking my heart that staffers who make between $60K and $160K a year are going to somehow ‘lose’ something. Does anyone think these people have a menu that is less than club sandwiches and all other varieties of restaurant-quality hot and cold lunches? And, is the government subsidizing these cafeterias so the staffers are paying cut-rate prices in the first place, even if the places are run by outside contractors?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the lunches are also able to be claimed from expense accounts. In the meantime, schoolkids on the ‘free lunch’ programs are limited to 800 calorie lunches, when a typical high school jock can burn up 3000 during a typical school day that includes team practice.

Maybe if WaffenSS-Shultz can get Obama’s Hollywood friends to pony up just a little bit more, the staffers can continue with the lifestyles to which they are accustomed, and the rest of us can sleep better at night.

Liam on March 22, 2013 at 5:10 PM

A seven year old in our family eats anything. Her school has
a ticket program whereby one purchases a booklet of individual tickets that one can use for lunch at school. 75% of the time she elects to bring her
lunch because the food is so horrible. She says her dog wouldn’t
eat it!

The 13 year old says the most popular lunch at her school is the alternative to the lunch choices; a
yogurt, bagel and a piece of fruit because the other food is inedible. They all brings snacks to school.

Just imagine if we change the venue from a federal government employee meeting, to one at a large private employer.

Here we find a vice-president of XXX division voicing concerns about the quality of life within the company and that they need to be competitive in order to attract and keep high quality staff. So far, so good.

Lets continue:

The CEO of this private company then responds: “Thats a pretty incredible story you just told us. Now let me inform you of the facts..this company is currently $16T in debt, and adding to that debt nearly $1T every year. Where in the world do you think we’re going to get the money to be competitive and offer subsidized lunches for our employees? Do you think we can vote here today and force our customers to pay us more for our unpopular products and services…we’re not the federal government, you know…..in fact….

Is the House Cafeteria still using Nancy Pelosi’s caterer?

Under Pelosi’s signature “Green the Capitol” initiative, the House cafeterias will get a full-blown makeover Monday to the very latest in organic and locally grown cuisine under a new contract with Restaurant Associates, caterer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The vast House food service operation that feeds the belly of the beast – more than 2.5 million meals a year for members, staff, tourists, lobbyists, lawyers, journalists and other highly regarded species that inhabit the Capitol – is switching to locally grown, organic, seasonal and generally healthy food. It will be served in compostable sugar cane and corn starch containers instead of petroleum-based plastics. Even the knives and forks will be biodegradable.

For a while a bunch of my husband’s friends(retired gov. types)would meet on a weekday and go to lunch. One of them worked for the World Bank. They have a great cafeteria which was rennovated and expanded during the few years we ate there. There were so many choices. The place was huge, inviting, and cheap. Two of us could get most anything we wanted and the bill was $10 for the both of us.

A friend spent the summer working in the library at the Dept of Agriculture a few years back. She was amazed at the choices and quality of food for them. Also very reasonable. Actually it was cheaper for her to eat there than to bring her lunch. None of these poor servants to the American people are going to starve. DWS is full of it.

If any private sector company lost millions – not billions, not trillions, just millions – year after year after year – its employees not only would have had their pay and benefits reduced, but they probably would have lost their jobs long ago.
