Obama to Israelis: Put yourselves in the Palestinians’ shoes

posted at 5:01 pm on March 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

To be scrupulously fair, the tone of the clip isn’t true to the tone of the entire speech. The Standard has the transcript. Most of what preceded this was as florid a valentine to Israel and Zionism as a U.S. president has ever delivered. It had to be in order to prepare his audience for the “put yourself in their shoes” passage, which of course was the real point of the speech. He couldn’t convince Netanyahu to restart the peace process with the Palestinians so now he’s going to try to convince his Israeli constituents to pressure him into doing so. (Now might be an opportune moment for this pitch.) And of course the media is breathless about it. His other landmark speech in the Middle East, in Cairo in 2009, totally changed the Middle East for the better, didn’t it? I’m sure this one will be just as significant.

Elliott Abrams responds by reminding O that there’s a long, long list of Middle Eastern nations that need tutoring on empathy and Israel’s not near the top:

In his remarks today he pictured an Arab world, and a Palestinian political system, yearning for peace with Israel through negotiated compromises. This ignores the vast ocean of anti-Semitism in the Arab world, and the inculcation of hatred of Jews and Israel in generation after generation of Arabs—including Palestinians. And it ignores the rising tide of Islamism in the region, which threatens to engulf all those political figures who would really like a compromise peace. The Arab world Obama described is a place far more desirous of, and far closer to, peace with Israel than the one Israelis actually see around them.

Obama urged Israelis to push their own government toward peace: “Speaking as a politician, I can promise you this: political leaders will not take risks if the people do not demand that they do. You must create the change that you want to see.” This may be taken as a swipe at the new Israeli government or at Netanyahu, but even if it is not he is again addressing it to the wrong audience. Israelis cannot “create the change they want to see” in the hearts of Palestinians, Egyptians, and other Arabs. “Now is the time for the Arab World to take steps toward normalized relations with Israel,” Obama said. And he is right, but does anyone want to take bets on how likely that is?

Here’s the one passage in Obama’s speech that I can’t get over. Literally no one, except maybe George W. Bush, still believes the following is true; it would have been a tough sell at any time, but at the moment it’s mind-boggling.

Four years ago, I stood in Cairo in front of an audience of young people. Politically, religiously, they must seem a world away. But the things they want – they’re not so different from you. The ability to make their own decisions; to get an education and a good job; to worship God in their own way; to get married and have a family. The same is true of the young Palestinians that I met in Ramallah this morning, and of young Palestinians who yearn for a better life in Gaza.

Which Egyptian “young people” does he mean? The ~5% of the country that’s liberal and reform-minded and that quickly disappeared from political view after Mubarak was deposed? Or the majority of the population that says they want to tear up the treaty with Israel and then elected a guy known for demanding that Palestinians be returned to “the entire land of Palestine”? If you want a truly honest, bracing explanation of what’s wrong with the peace process, skip O’s shpiel below and follow that last link. It’s all there: Screeching demonization of the “bloodsuckers” plus the ember of Palestinian revanchism that’ll burn forever, whether a “peace” deal is ever struck or not. It’s very, very O-like (O for Obama and Oprah) to think that a speech cajoling one side to understand their neighbor a little better might help resolve a zero-sum game over the most famously disputed territory in the world. One side insists on a right of return (and always will, even after they’re granted their own state) and the other side insists they can’t have it. Here’s to lasting peace.

The Palestinians would have had a better life if they quit trying to kill Israelis, stopped using their kids as human shields, quit sending their women on suicide bombings, and if their leaders from Arafat on down didn’t steal for themselves all that money from the UN. They would really be screwed if Israel closed the borders for good, thus putting all those Palestinians out of work. Their entire economy would crash in a week without jobs and income from Israel.

Hard to believe even the SCOAMF couldn’t see the problem with …

“put yourself in their shoes”

If the Israelis put themselves into the Palestinian’s ‘shoes’, the ‘Palestinian problem’ would be gone after a week of violent rocket and bombing attacks leading to the death of ALL the Palestinians.

If they also “Put themselves into the shoes of the Iranian leadership”, the Israelis would launch a few dozen nuclear weapons over Iran and see how much the Iranian nuclear weapon development would be set back by the country being covered in radioactive pockmarks and fallout.

Fortunately, the Israelis know a fool when they see one and don’t have to wait for the SCOAMF to speak and remove all doubt.

22044 on March 21, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Obama to Israelis: Put yourselves in the Palestinians’ shoes

Sooooo, the Israelis need to create a children’s show that encourages five-year-olds to be suicide martyrs?

Maybe the Israelis need to start launching unprovoked shelling of civilian shopping centers where the Palestinians live?

Or maybe he’s just saying the Israelis need to catch up with the rampant corruption among the Palestinians? I suppose a few more government figures in Israel enriching themselves on foreign aid could close that gap.

I guess I’m just having trouble interpreting this comment. Woe is me.

There Goes The Neighborhood on March 21, 2013 at 5:31 PM

“The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized,” Obama said. “Put yourself in their shoes – look at the world through their eyes. It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of her own, and lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements of her parents every single day. It is not just when settler violence against Palestinians goes unpunished. It is not right to prevent Palestinians from farming their lands; to restrict a student’s ability to move around the West Bank; or to displace Palestinian families from their home. Neither occupation nor expulsion is the answer. Just as Israelis built a state in their homeland, Palestinians have a right to be a free people in their own land.”

I would not want to be a top dog in Israel for any amount of earthly reward. Everyone and their brother and his dog know the quandary that Israel is in: the man ‘in charge’ of about the only nation and certainly the only superpower that gives a rat’s fanny about Israel is an avowed enemy. And At least a dozen other elected higher-ups in the USA are active threats to their nation’s daily survival.

Their backing nation is not only running into bankruptcy (at which point we won’t be able to help) but is playing footsie with Muslims, who are about to go nuclear, at which point there is absolutely nothing to stop them bumrushing at Israel with mushroom clouds as the grand finale. The “Godzilla threshold” is perilously close, and the American military lobbyists aren’t going to come riding to the rescue.

Don’t make me wish; Obama’s handlers are too smart for that. Iron Dome might just momentarily fail to protect his locale – due to Arab terrorist sabotage, of course – and a Pali rocket might just land on his jug-eared noggin. Which of course would not only deprive them of a great figurehead (those are expensive to replace) but be a nasty little hole in their delusions for peace.

The same is true of the young Palestinians that I met in Ramallah this morning, and of young Palestinians who yearn for a better life in Gaza.

No Obama.

These people want 24/7 for all Jews in Israel to be pushed into the Sea and drowned. They 27/7 want all Jews murdered. They 24/7 worship those that murder Jews. They often throw large rocks at Jews. They demand those that murder Jews be released from Prison.

No Obama these people think nothing like Jews or Americans. They have many children and teach these children the greatest thing they can do is murder Jews. They praise that above marriage schooling or anything else. They never teach peace just war with Israel.

Totally agree. I think it’s because he has never had to work for anything, ever; it’s all been handed to him and he thinks that’s the way everything is.

Ivy League education paid for? Thanks! Enough votes for president twice? No problem! Peace between Israel and “Palestine”? Of course!

This is why even the well-intentioned liberals are dangerous. They may not be actively evil like Obama, but they don;t think about unintended consequences while agitating for “fairness”. When you promote people like Obama well past his ability level with affirmative action, it only feeds his narcissism. I get very, very nervous every time he leaves the country. Who knows what diplomatic incident or WW3 President Urkel could cause…

If Bush said that he would have been the laughing stock of the MSM. As it is they will report what a great courageous speech he gave. I feel certain that his approval numbers in Israel will be going down

Until then queue the outrage about Beyonce being the perfect role model for his daughters.

Obama’s Muslim-leaning view of the world has no basis in reality. He refuses to accept what has happened in Egypt and Libya. How can Israel be expected to negotiate and swap land for peace with Islamists who want their destruction?

Anyone who wants to see how this White House views Israel, go to whitehouse.gov and check our their map of Israel. It’s pretty stunning. Jerusalem is not considered part of Israel, as well as the entire West Bank and parts of Northern Israel.

For harmony and peace worldwide.

I sure hope Bibi realizes that when Obowma promises to continue to support Israel militarily…

… he is on his own.

I’m sure Bibi has had that figured out since the night Barry abandoned him at the WH for dinner with Moochelle….sorta symbolic of what Israel can expect from the USA with Barry in charge.

How can Israel be expected to negotiate and swap land for peace with Islamists who want their destruction?

The only final settlement the Paleostinians want to negotiate is a swap all of Israel for a peaceful and swift exit from there by all the Jews.

If the Jews of Israel don’t want to go elsewhere peacefully, and evidently most don’t, other means will have to be arranged by the Paleostinians and their allies for the Jews’ departure.

Put yourself in Israel’s shoes. Anti-Semitism is peaking like no time since the 1930s and nearly the entire ruling elite of the civilized world wants them to disappear off the face of the earth.

But you can’t do that because you’re one of those elites.

Release the Khalidi tape.

I wanted to mention my own take on the so-called End Times for whomever cares to read it, but wanted to be accurate and so didn’t post it. It was this:

Beast Meets with Major Jihadi Groups in Near East
Beast Speaks to World From Israel
Beast Promises Israelis May Build New Temple on Holy Mount
Sniper Inflicts Fatal Shot to Head, Lays in State Three Days
Beast Indwelt by Satan
Beast Wakes Up! Fully Conscious, Clean and Articulate
Beast Contains Islamo-fascists with Rod of Iron
New Jewish Temple Consecrated with Red Heffer
Beast Visits new Temple, Sacrifices Pig, Jews Flee to Wilderness

Then I saw this article, which I copy in part.

According to an article in Word Net Daily, an influential Muslim leader by the name of Adnan Oktar in Turkey is described as making the same proposal, to rebuild the Jewish Temple, calling it the “Palace of Solomon.”

Hassidic writer and publisher Mordechai Housman, describes the first and primary obstacle as being political, and second being safety reasons due to Muslims. If a significant Muslim leader would declare that Solomon’s Temple should be rebuilt, then if the Muslim community would follow, it is likely the Jewish people would jump at the opportunity and be able to overcome whatever ceremonial obstacles also lie in the path.

This is very significant prophetically, because the Jewish Temple must be standing at the mid-point of the time period commonly known as the Tribulation. The Apostles John and Paul, the Prophet Daniel, and Jesus Himself make references to this Temple standing.

Daniel 9:27a says: “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” (KJV)
The “he” spoken of here is the coming world leader, known as the Antichrist. The “one week” is the seven years of the Tribulation period.

In Matthew 24:15–16, Jesus references this very passage: “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:” (KJV)
This “Abomination of Desolation” is set up in the Most Holy Place, which is well known to be the Holy of Holies in the Jewish Temple. Thus this Temple must be standing in order for the “Abomination of Desolation” to happen.

Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” (KJV)

Here also is a reference to the Antichrist (the man of sin) declaring himself God inside the Temple of God. This also is the Jewish Temple.

In Revelation 11:1–2, John tells us: “And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.” (KJV)
Forty-two months is also equivalent to half of seven years. In other words, the Temple which John refers to is standing, not only in the middle of the Tribulation, but it has been standing for the entire first part of the Tribulation.

If the Israelis fall for that line of crap, they deserve everything that happens to ‘em. But I’m putting my money on the Israelis.

I can’t imagine a people who live with armed escorts in various places in their country because of the threat of extremism every day of their lives are not going to be saying to themselves, “This kind of talk might play well in Peoria, but over here even our teenaged daughters carry guns because THEY refuse to put themselves in OUR shoes, moron.”

I am certain beyond all doubt that Israel would love to have greeted that sorry sack of skin with a fighter squadron and “turn around or hit the ground you barbarian-loving, dirt-skinned kapo!”

But the cold hard fact is that without US support, Israel is pretty much all alone in the world, more specifically in the middle of Arabland about to go nuclear. And don’t be flippant about God protecting them; we are all the way over here, and the answer to that question is by no means certain over there.
