Michael Moore: If Harry Reid’s grandkids had gotten shot, he’d have allowed a vote on the assault-weapons ban

posted at 12:41 pm on March 20, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via the Right Scoop, gaze upon the ruins of Obama’s months-long gun-control campaign, designed from the word go as a way to corner Republicans on a tough vote ahead of 2014 and now cause for angry shrieking at Democrats among the liberal base. For once, I’m on Moore’s side: How about a Senate vote, Harry? Let’s get Mark Pryor and Mary Landrieu and the other 14 or so Democrats who don’t want to touch this issue on record. And since Moore’s eager to emphasize personal experiences with gun violence, let’s hold hearings too. Here’s the GOP’s first witness, and here’s the second.

This clip’s a good summation of the Piers-ian approach to this subject, though, in its endorsement of policy driven by emotion rather than efficacy. Note that neither of them explicitly argues that a new AWB would prevent the shootings in the hypothetical they imagine; how could they when they know that a lunatic like Jared Loughner was able to wreak havoc with a standard semiautomatic? That’s one of the big problems with targeting “assault weapons” in the first place: No one can seem to explain convincingly why one scary-looking semiautomatic should be banned while other very similar semiautomatics should be left alone. The whole thing smells of empty symbolism and incrementalism, banning a certain arbitrary class of weapons not because it’ll do much to reduce gun violence but because (a) then politicians can say they’ve Done Something and (b) the public will gradually get more comfortable with the idea of gun regulation, which moves the Overton window towards more aggressive regulation later. Moore, at least, has been honest about his goal of banning all semiautomatics, not just “assault weapons.” Morgan hasn’t quite reached that level of candor yet as far as I know, but give him time.

Don’t get too caught up in this, though. One of the political benefits to Democrats of Reid dropping the AWB is that it makes Schumer’s background-check bill, which does stand a real chance of passing, seem even more modest by comparison. Read Charles Cooke on that if you haven’t already.

KOOLAID2 on March 20, 2013 at 12:48 PM

There was the woman who called 911 b/c two guys were breaking into her home. Her husband had just died and she had a new born. She barricaded the door. It was daylight, they knew she was home, and yet they persisted. It took the police almost 20 minutes to get to her rural home. She ended up shooting one killing him as he pushed through the door and barricade.

There have been 911 tapes of a couple of women who were hiding in their closets as some jerk broke in and looked for them. They also were forced to shoot the criminals.

There was the woman with the two little kids who called her husband. The guy who broke end also knew she was home and instead of leaving, just went from floor to floor looking for where she and her kids were hiding. She shot him 5 times and he was still able to get up and drive off.

In all these instances, the perp knew someone was home, had to know that they had called 911, and still hunted them down inside the house. This tells me it is more than a property crime but that the guy really meant to do the victims physical harm.

But in Moore’s world, it would be tough luck.

How about a Senate vote, Harry? Let’s get Mark Pryor and Mary Landrieu and the other 14 or so Democrats who don’t want to touch this issue on record.

I’ve got a problem with how the lsm is doing the math on this thing. Harry Reid was out there talking about the need for 60 votes for the AWB to pass and there simply were not 60 votes. The implication is that the Senate will not be voting on DiFi’s stupid bill because of those obstructionist Republicans. The real math is that there wasn’t even 50 votes out there for the AWB which means that at least some of those obstructionists had a D behind their name.

Moore becomes increasingly the ‘Wild Boor Moore’ with every appearance. He bought an estate on Torch Lake in the Traverse City area of Michigan. The locals generally despise him. He’s from Flint, Michigan and so, naturally, decided to take his brand of progressive claptrap to a conservative area. He also opposes hunting and sport fishing…in an area that has always been highly renowned for both. He knows he’s not welcome there, but then, if he didn’t go where he’s not welcome, he wouldn’t get out much.

Because being committed to a progressive ideology and, either knowing someone already in the business, or, being actually related to someone in the business,or, being on the affirmative action list, are required for consideration for employment in those fields. Academia has long practiced similar hiring standards whenever possible.

thatsafactjack on March 20, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Because some worked their way into the system and advanced to positions where they can act as gatekeepers, making certain anyone not in strict agreement with their ideology is kept out, hiring only their own.

Just try getting a job in either industry as a fledgling with known conservative ties, cultural and political views and see how far you can get launching careers in either the LSM or entertainment.

Michael Moore, so big, and yet so small. Petty, whining, self-righteous. Rude. Arrogant. Remember when he left the picture of the child murdered by a handgun at Charlton Heston’s home, when Heston was the head of the NRA. This is simple.
Pass a universal background check law and create a new agency or task an existing one with creating the regulations to put it into effect. A registry will need to be created to implement the background check law.
Mission accomplished.
Liberals have already floated the idea of gun regulation thru health care regulations, easy enough to tie it all together. After all, they decide what the HIPPA rules are too.

Funny you should mention Laughner. He didn’t use an assault weapon, but he did use a 30 round extended magazine. The funny thing is that the shooting rampage didn’t stop when he empted the magazine. It ended when his second hi capacity magazine jammed, as they are known to be notoriously unreliable. If he had used standard magazines, he probably would have killed even more people. In this case, hi capacity mags actually saved lives.

DENVER (AP) — Gov. John Hickenlooper signed bills Wednesday that place new restrictions on firearms and signaled a change for Democrats who traditionally shied away from gun control debate in Colorado – a state with a moderate streak and pioneer tradition of gun ownership and self-reliance.

Hickenlooper’s signature of the bills comes exactly eight months after dozens of people were shot in a movie theater in suburban Denver, and on the same day as the executive director of the state’s Corrections Department was shot and killed at his home.

Police were searching for the person who killed Tom Clements, and trying to figure out if the attack was related to his job.

AP is right about the background checks bill.

The AWB is kabuki, it’s always been kabuki. It’s a distraction, pure and simple. The Dems have know all along they couldn’t get a ban passed.

They are playing the Republicans and the public.

Now the pressure is on the Rpublicans to show “compromise”.

Enter the UBC.

That’s been the goal all along. The Legislation contains provisions of keeping records of buyers and weapons. It’s registration by another name.

Once they get THAT, then after the next tragedy, they can begin the confiscation process.

Actually it is – depending on your definition of razor thin.
These bills only passed the legisture by 2 to 4 votes in each house. And a recall effort has already started against the Dem leader of the Senate (John Morse) – who only won the election by 300 votes when a 3rd party Paulbot candidate took 1000 votes away from the Repub candidate. Morse ran as a conservative former police chief – and then prompty went Dem party line in the Senate.

All but six of them would still be alive because someone would have had the time to kick the guy in the balls as he was fumbling to reload? Is this a trick question?

Time Lord on March 20, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Sorry you entirely missed my point.
DiFi used the sob story of Milk and Moscone being shot in pushing AR ban. But they weren’t shot with an AR – they were shot with a .38 revolver. So why was she going after ARs – which were not used in the crime that so horrified her – and why wasn’t she trying to ban revolvers?

M240H answered the other fallacy in Time Lord’s comment.

Michael Moore: If Harry Reid’s grandkids had gotten shot, he’d have allowed a vote on the assault-weapons ban

That’s a lie. Reid’s kids (and grandkids) like Moore and Morgan have professional protection, if Moore wants to pay for everyone’s professional protection he might stand a snowballs chance in hell in the gun control debate.

Moore, at least, has been honest about his goal of banning all semiautomatics, not just “assault weapons.”

Except for his own security folks, of course…

Michael Moore: If Harry Reid’s grandkids had gotten shot, he’d have allowed a vote on the assault-weapons ban

I guess then we could conclude that had Harry’s grand kids been run over by a car he would have allowed a vote on vehicle bans. Let’s just hope that they don’t die of alcohol poisoning!

cajunpatriot on March 20, 2013 at 2:48 PM

According to Politico, expansion of background checks to cover private sales will probably be cut too.

Curtiss on March 20, 2013 at 12:56 PM

Hadn’t heard that. It would make sense if they can’t impose the record-keeping requirements that make it the stealth registration law they want.

They aren’t interested in actually keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and sickos. In fact, any effective gun control measure undermines their agenda, which is the disarmament of the law-abiding. This is the reason that the DOJ does not prosecute criminals who falsify Form4473 and try to buy guns. A 2008 DOJ study showed rejectees were 28% more likely to commit a crime in the next five years. If those habitual offenders were in the federal pen, crime would be significantly reduced. Going after criminals instead of the law-abiding would be established as an effective strategy. That is the last thing in the world the gun grabbers want.

In Moore’s hand a fork should be considered an assault weapon.

hawkeye54 on March 20, 2013 at 2:53 PM

..the feds can NOT force a private citizen to perform a background check on anyone. Citizens are not regulated and can’t be regulated by the same statutes that cover gun dealers. A STATE-LAW however can direct people to do so I think, however even this may not be a legal requirement.

TX-96 on March 20, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Dunno, apparently they can force us to buy insurance now, so… i have trouble imagining they can’t ‘find’ the authority to make you do background checks on folks that want to buy your gun – and charge you a tax for the priviledge of using their system to capture both your and your buyer’s relevant information in the process…

Honestly, we need to get past the “feds can’t do that” frame of reference. Maybe it used to be that way – and God-willing, will be again – but today? Practically speaking? I think they think they can pretty much do whatever the f*ck they want, don’t you?

Midas on March 20, 2013 at 2:54 PM

I can reload any of those revolvers more quickly than you change an AR mag.

M240H on March 20, 2013 at 2:03 PM

That may be, but when my AR mag has 30 rounds and your revolver has six, then you have to reload those revolvers four times before I deplete my first mag.

Time Lord on March 20, 2013 at 3:27 PM

For once, I’m on Moore’s side: How about a Senate vote, Harry? Let’s get Mark Pryor and Mary Landrieu and the other 14 or so Democrats who don’t want to touch this issue on record.

I’m with Moore on this, too. I’m sick and tired of Reid and the DemoTurds basically saying, “Well, if I can’t win this game, I’m not going to play at all.”

Let’s get them on the record so they have to answer to their constituents.

UltimateBob on March 20, 2013 at 3:55 PM
