Wallace to Durbin: If $9T in debt was “unpatriotic,” how can $16T in debt be “sustainable”?

posted at 10:01 am on March 18, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Answer: It can’t, obviously, which is why Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) doesn’t respond to Chris Wallace’s point.  Instead, Durbin tries to argue that deficit reform has taken place, which is almost as absurd as calling $16 trillion in debt “sustainable” without a balanced budget to, y’know, sustain it (via Doug Powers at the Boss Emeritus’ place):

This is a bit of a rhetorical shell game being played by Durbin in this exchange.  Deficits and debt are two different albeit related issues.  Durbin wants to talk about deficit reduction, but doesn’t explain that the reduction still produces deficits that add to the national debt.

Furthermore, the deficit reduction which Durbin claims consists of smoke and mirrors.  The reduction is only from earlier projections in the Obama administration based on (a) war spending that’s going to end in 2014 no matter what, and (b) higher baseline spending based on the fiscal and economic crisis of 2008.  The truth is that the lowest deficit projected over the next ten years (over $400 billion) is higher than all but one of the budget deficits run by George W. Bush and Republican-controlled Congresses from fiscal years 2001-2007.

We haven’t solved the deficit problem; we’re actually making it worse.  As the deficits accumulate, it makes the debt unsustainable.  Pretty much everything Durbin says in this clip is false, including “Chris, here’s the good news.”

After watching Chris Wallace give Durbin a pass we got to see Matt Kibbe make fun of that stalwart La Tourrette (RINO-OHIO) guy defend unssutainable defecit spending on the GOP side. Kibbe answers at least a couple of La Tourrette’s rejoinders with the simple “we don’t look at the color of people’s skin” in response.

“But they were, all of them, deceived, for another deal was made. In the land of Washington, in the fires of the White House, the Dark Lord Obama forged in secret a master plan, to control all others. And into this plan he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. “One plan to rule them all.” One by one, the Free Lands of America fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A Last Alliance of Men and Bloggers marched against the armies of Washington and on the slopes of Capitol Hill, they fought for the freedom of America. Victory was near. But the power of the plan could not be undone.”

The problem with Durbin and the other Nazgul is they believe in what they are saying.

They literally promised that in 2006 in order to win control of both houses of Congress in the Nov 2006 elections.

2006:

Over the past decade, the Republican controlled Congress took our nation in the wrong direction. Too many Americans are paying a heavy price for those wrong choices: record costs for energy, health care and education; jobs shipped overseas; and budgets that heap record debt on our children. For millions, the middle-class dream has been replaced by a middle-class squeeze…

Democrats are proposing a New Direction for America…

With integrity, civility and fiscal discipline, our New Direction for America will use commonsense principles to address the aspirations and fulfill the hopes and dreams of all Americans. That is our promise to the American people….

Our federal budget should be a statement of our national values. One of those values is responsibility. Democrats are committed to ending years of irresponsible budget policies that have produced historic deficits. Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren, we will restore “Pay As You Go” budget discipline.

Budget discipline has been abandoned by the Bush Administration and its Republican congressional majorities. Congress under Republican control has turned a projected $5.6 trillion 10-year surplus at the end of the Clinton years into a nearly $3 trillion deficit– including the four worst deficits in the history of America. The nation’s debt ceiling has been raised four times in just five years to more than $8.9 trillion. Nearly half of our nation’s record debt is owned by foreign countries including China and Japan. Without a return to fiscal discipline, the foreign countries that make our computers, our clothing and our toys will soon be making our foreign policy. Deficit spending is not just a fiscal problem – it’s a national security issue as well.

Our New Direction is committed to “Pay As You Go” budgeting – no more deficit spending.

2007:

After years of historic deficits, this 110th Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt.

- New Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 01/04/2007

Democrat majorities are now responsible for the six biggest deficits in the history of the USA, with no end in sight.

Democrat majorities more than doubled the Debt Held By The Public in just four years (increasing it from $5.0 Trillion at FY-end 2007 to over $10.1 Trillion at FY-end 2011).

Democrats promised “fiscal discipline” and “no more deficit spending”.

They LIED.

ITguy on March 18, 2013 at 10:49 AM

We need to clarify the terms: deficit and debt. Too many people don’t understand and therefore, tune out the problem.

Deficit – current year’s shortfall in revenue versus expenses; in other words, you spend more than you take in for the current year

Debt – accumulated deficits over time.

Thus, every deficit simply increases the debt.

Do you want to elect a Democrat who is going to hire and protect unions and family members or a Republican who is going to hire and protect family members and unions? The entire state is run by people who are getting “theirs,” feeding at the trough, one hand washing the other, scratching backs, the end justifying the means and just about every other disfunctional cliche or saying out there. They don’t care who they are taking money from or whether they will eventually bleed the state dry, they just want to line their own pockets. The state is a giant pyramid scheme.

I’m disappointed that this poast hasn’t received more comments.

I wish more people cared about holding the Democrats accountable for what they promised in 2006 vs. what they have done 2007-present.

Here’s what they said in 2006:

And here’s an updated version to reflect the reality of the last six years:

Over the past six years, the Democrat majorities in Washington, D.C. took our nation in the wrong direction. Too many Americans are paying a heavy price for those wrong choices: record costs for energy, health care and education; jobs shipped overseas; and 2 budgets and 4 years WITHOUT budgets that have heaped record debt on our children. For millions, the middle-class dream has been replaced by a middle-class squeeze…

Democrats proposed a New Direction for America, then did the exact opposite…

Democrats promised:

With integrity, civility and fiscal discipline, our New Direction for America will use commonsense principles to address the aspirations and fulfill the hopes and dreams of all Americans. That is our promise to the American people….

Our federal budget should be a statement of our national values. One of those values is responsibility. Democrats are committed to ending years of irresponsible budget policies that have produced historic deficits. Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren, we will restore “Pay As You Go” budget discipline.

Far from keeping their promises, Democrats roughly tripled deficit spending in their first budget, and then roughly tripled deficit spending AGAIN in their second budget, and then have not passed a budget at all for the last four years.

Budget discipline has been abandoned by the Obama Administration and its Democrat congressional majorities. Congress under Democrat control has produced the SIX worst deficits in the history of America. The nation’s debt ceiling has been raised to more than $16.39 trillion, and the debt ceiling has been suspended until May 19, 2013, but we have already exceeded that ceiling with a total debt as of March 15, 2013 of over $16.73 trillion.

Democrats in 2006 claimed to be concerned about the Debt Held by the Public, saying:

Nearly half of our nation’s record debt is owned by foreign countries including China and Japan. Without a return to fiscal discipline, the foreign countries that make our computers, our clothing and our toys will soon be making our foreign policy. Deficit spending is not just a fiscal problem – it’s a national security issue as well.

Our New Direction is committed to “Pay As You Go” budgeting – no more deficit spending.

Well, at the end of Fiscal Year 2007, when the last Republican budget ended and the first Democrat majority budget began, the annual deficit was less than $161 Billion, and the Debt Held by the Public was $5.0 Trillion.

The Democrats who claimed in 2006 that deficit spending is a national security issue quickly turned a $161 Billion deficit into annual deficits well over a Trillion dollars each and every year for the last five fiscal years, and Democrats MORE THAN DOUBLED the Debt Held by the Public in just the four Fiscal Years that Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House!

By the end of Fiscal Year 2011, the Debt Held by the Public had more than doubled from $5.0 Trillion to over $10.1 Trillion! And as of March 15, 2013, it is nearly $11.9 Trillion!
