Video: Hillary stops pretending that she’s against gay marriage; Update: 58% support gay marriage in new poll

posted at 2:01 pm on March 18, 2013 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “Wait, Hillary wasn’t already on record in favor of gay marriage?” Evidently not. Five years ago, top-tier Democratic candidates concluded that they couldn’t safely support SSM publicly; five years and a double-digit swing in public opinion later, they’ve concluded that they can’t safely oppose it. The GOP will wrestle with this issue for awhile but, as of now, I think supporting gay marriage has reached the same stature among Democrats as supporting abortion rights. Namely, while occasional disagreement from backbenchers will be grudgingly tolerated in the name of winning purple states, no party nominee will ever, ever again end up on the other side of this issue. If you want to win a national Democratic primary, you’re pro-gay marriage, period. Hillary’s just checking the box.

In fact, it’s revealing that this is the first move she’s made politically since retiring from diplomacy. So orthodox has the party become on this subject that it might have been a liability for her if she had waited any longer before issuing her inevitable endorsement. (Bill “evolved” on the issue more than three years ago and published an op-ed just last week denouncing the Defense of Marriage Act, which of course he signed into law.) And don’t think she and her camp don’t know it. This announcement has been in the works for months, per this Politico report from November.

But according to two sources, Clinton’s aides have privately indicated to people that she will end up where her husband and daughter, Chelsea, have emerged on the issue – in favor of same-sex nuptials.

Her circle has “indicated privately that she feels like … because of her role as the country’s chief diplomat that it was appropriate for her to stay out of this” over the last two years, said one source, who added that the message was also that as soon as she’s left Foggy Bottom “and she’s given the right opportunity, that she will end up with the rest of her clan.”

Watch and you’ll see her explain that her perspective changed in part because of her friendships with gays. That’s basically the same rationale Rob Portman gave to support his own switch on this issue, and the left spent the entire weekend sneering at him for it. They won’t sneer at Hillary, but there’s some consistency in that: After happily tolerating Obama lying to their faces about his stance on gay marriage in the interest of getting elected, they’re not about to hassle Hillary. As long as you get to the right outcome, you’ve got carte blanche on how you get there. If you’re a Democrat.

Exit question via DrewM: Which position on this subject will the next GOP nominee take? Under normal circumstances, I’d bet the farm that he/she would punt by backing a federalist approach. But that’s not on the menu if, as expected, the Supreme Court strikes down gay-marriage bans as a violation of equal protection. Social cons will want the nominee to back a Federal Marriage Amendment overturning the decision even though it has zero change of passing. The party leadership will want the nominee to stay far, far away from that for fear of alienating young voters. What’s the solution?

Update: WaPo/ABC is out with a new poll finding record support for gay marriage at 58 percent. Here are the numbers among religious groups. The first column is the number in favor today, the second is the number in favor in 2004.

ssm

Another interesting result: “This poll suggests that the high court is the right place for it: Americans by nearly 2-1, 64-33 percent, say the legality of gay marriage ‘should be decided for all states on the basis of the U.S. Constitution’ rather than by each state making its own law on the issue.” I’m skeptical of that, but if it’s true then there’ll be less of a popular backlash after the Supreme Court rules than I thought.

What do you wanna bet that, in roughly 30 years time, it will be culturally accepted and politically popular to support the idea of men/women marrying minor children of the same/opposite sex? Afterall, 30 years ago, the idea of same-sex marriage was seen in pretty much the same context as the NAMBLA ideas of today.

This is what really pisses me off about this issue. The number of gays who really don’t give a damn about anything but this issue. What’s even funnier is the Republicans who think if we suddenly go “pro gay marriage” that we are going to get voters in droves to our side. You should have seen the hatred coming from the gay community towards Portman after his switch, because he should have switched BEFORE he had a gay son. Any change on this issue from the Republicans will be seen as tokenism and pandering just like when we have hispanic or black conservatives. So yeah lets install another minority victim group just so we can get a handful of votes that will never come our way..

I was in elementary school through the late ’60s and in Junior High from ’70 to ’72, and I remember when the word, divorce, was hush-hush, and the kids whispered it, when someone they knew had parents who might be getting one.

Now – Utopia is Barney and Bruce, in wedded bliss.

And, no doubt, in a few more years, homosexuals will be getting married in every church, Catholic or Protestant, BY ORDER OF THE STATE.

I can only shake my head, and watch America rot.

If the world hasn’t come to an end, I’d say it’ll take less time to push through that concept, right after the acceptance of polygamy. After all, our children are maturing much more rapidly than ever before, so we can simply adjust the age of consent to 12 or perhaps a smidgen lower. Both the polygamy issue and lowering the age of consent will surely please our growing population of muslims. Once you set foot on a slippery slope, you tend to slide downward faster.

Right there with ya.

Because, you know, there’s no more pressing issue in this country right now than gay marriage.

The GOP has got to find a way to keep getting caught in these gumption traps which are lose-lose, no matter how a candidate answers.

So, Allah, you asked, what’s the solution?

The 2016 GOP candidate, when asked, simply says, I’m running for President. The President is head of the Executive branch. SSM is an issue for the courts and the legislatures, and I’ll dispatch the duties of the Executive branch in accord with the decisions enacted by the states, the Congress, and the courts. Next question.

It’s just my opinion, and it’s just how I see things – but, if you use the euphemism, gay, instead of the truth, homosexual, then you’re doing the bidding of those who want to normalize homosexuality, especially when your children are the target of their indoctrination, and demand your use of gay in order to make it so.

Sounds too much like one of the lectures we are treated to from Satan-in-a-hoodie. You lost most of the parasites by the second sentence since you weren’t giving them anything. When asked about gay marriage, all the single-issue sodomite wants to hear is just how soon the feds are going to legitimize their lifestyle and just how much they will be punishing churches who refuse to perform the ceremonies. Keep in mind this is not about civil unions or any other sort of legal ways that same-sex couples can get “married.” This is all about vengence to individuals and institutions who say otherwise.

Personally, I’m with Rand Paul on this one. The Feds have no place in marriage.

Happy Nomad on March 18, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Never going to happen, not because it is untrue, but because Huma is a Muslim Brotherhood operative. Her job is to get close to the seats of Power in America, influence those in power, and keep the Muslim Brotherhood informed of the thinking in Mordor on the Potomac. Huma will do whatever it take to achieve that end, but she will not come out of the closet as it would mean a death sentence for her to do so.

You would think, but consent laws have already been challenged with abortion. School nurses cannot give my child aspirin, but in some states they can refer them and drive them to an abortion clinic. So if my 12 year old is old enough to consent to a medical surgery(which is contractual with a doctor) it isn’t a far jump to say she is old enough to consent to a sexual relationship and a contractual one with an older man or woman.

Portman is another story entirely. Sneer-worthy opportunism to suddenly decide to support SSM because his son is a sodomite. But Portman knew that for years. The announcement on Friday was clearly a kind of amicus brief for the SCOTUS hearing on Prop 8. In other words, do the voters get to decide or a closeted sodomite judge with about the most spiteful and biased ruling I’ve ever read.

CrustyB on March 18, 2013 at 2:36 PM

This is what really pisses me off about this issue. The number of gays who really don’t give a damn about anything but this issue.

Really? Because it shouldn’t. The right doesn’t quite understand what it has on its hands with gay marriage coming so close to being legalized nationally. Happy Nomad is quite right, the gay rights movement has become singularly focused on marriage. There was a time when gay rights was part of a broad leftist, Marxist struggle. It used to critique marriage as a institution of capitalist patriarchy, which appropriated women’s labor and which organized people’s unwillingness to support income redistribution to the poor. As a result most ‘gay rights’ movements have abandoned their support for issues like HIV AIDS funding for the poor, their opposition to police abuse of the homeless (a population which includes a lots of LGBT youth kicked out of their homes). Its marriage, marriage, marriage. I know lots of middle class white gay men who will probably start voting Republican once this issue is out the way because they are essentially economically conservative (and kind of racist). I just don’t know why the GOP has not embraced this sooner, you have kicked yourselves in the foot in terms of the gay dollar. Once DOMA is done with and gay marriage is legal everywhere lots of that gay campaign money is up for grabs. Will the right see the writing on the wall and seize it. Probably not.

melle1228 on March 18, 2013 at 2:33 PM

But there are a significant number of people who think it’s just fine and dandy for a 12 year old to get an abortion. In fact, they think it’s a good thing. So having the government force that decision is just fine with them. Not the case for 12 year old with 30 year old. Now, the slippery slope may happen with 14 year old with 18 year old, then as the years go on as the center of tolerance for perversion moves, so do the limits.

Different times, people had to grow up fast in some bygone circumstances. Seems to me that 13 was an acceptable age in some areas. Female children sometimes considered being a financial burden to some poor families, they were happy to get ‘em married off and one was already considered an old maid and undesirable if not married by the age of 19.

58% for gay marriage.
71% still think gay means happy.

Wade on March 18, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Watch and you’ll see her explain that her perspective changed in part because of her friendships with gays.

This is the justification being used to force churches to recognize and conduct same-sex marriages.

An old lady has gay friends, ergo, churches must respect their wishes, regardless of the US Constiution.

The logic is absolutely pristine.

BobMbx on March 18, 2013 at 2:43 PM

No what you are is intellectually dishonest. You never had a thought that the feds should be out of marriage until the prospect of gay marriage was raised. Be real. No one is fooled.

libfreeordie on March 18, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Actually you are trying to be psychic or psychotic; I forget.. but I digress.

I have thought the feds should get out of marriage for awhile. The feds have done more damage to marriage then they have help in the last forty years. With welfare programs and no-fault divorce; the state has become daddy and effectively killed marriage. So there..

melle1228 on March 18, 2013 at 2:44 PM

Part of being a mature adult is to protect younger generations.

How many mature adults think it would be a swell idea to let 2 married guys adopt a 5 year old little girl?

How many mature adults think 2 married women would be the best people to adopt a 5 year old little boy and help him become a man?

Once gay marriage is legal, nobody will be able to “discriminate” against non-traditional married couples who want to adopt children. Just ask the Catholic adoption agencies that were forced to close down when they refused to let gay couples adopt children.

As a society, should we go along with what grown adults say will make them happy, or should we do what is best for future generations of children?

It makes no difference. For many of us, it comes down to religion, not politics. I don’t debate it because it’s about faith and my mind will not be changed.

libfreeordie on March 18, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Okay you got me. I think the feds should be in the marriage business in order to protect traditional family values from the onslaught of immoral devient behaviors like the legitimization of homosexuality as a normal lifestyle choice. But since that clearly isn’t going to happen, then the feds have no business punishing traditional societal institutions on behalf of practicing sodomites.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?!!!!!

Speaking of intellectual dishonesty.

Hey you know Billy Clinton, Democrat, champion of women, and “husband” to the strong, intelligent, “coattail-riding” Hillary was accused of rape right?

But that is different right? It wasn’t rape-rape as your intelligent compatriot put it?

John the Libertarian on March 18, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Key word being ‘marry’. In a primitive society where morals are uniformly shared, and children must be mature to survive, and people don’t realize (or can’t do anything about the fact) that younger females are much more likely to die in childbirth without modern technology. Then ya. We may be headed back to a primitive society, you never know.

libfreeordie on March 18, 2013 at 2:36 PM

You are such a liar. I see the reaction to GOProud by “gay men.” I saw the reaction to Rob Portman’s conversion. It was a bunch of hateful leftists who couldn’t care less that they changed their stance on gay marriage. And I highly doubt you know any Republicans-just sayin.

melle1228 on March 18, 2013 at 2:47 PM

Once DOMA is done with and gay marriage is legal everywhere lots of that gay campaign money is up for grabs. Will the right see the writing on the wall and seize it. Probably not.
libfreeordie on March 18, 2013 at 2:36 PM

And when that comes about can we rest assured the sodomites will calm down and simply live their lives in matrimonial bliss and leave the rest of us alone to live our lives as WE see fit?

Not a chance. Because it’s not ABOUT marriage and it never was.

Cleombrotus on March 18, 2013 at 2:48 PM

It’s just my opinion, and it’s just how I see things – but, if you use the euphemism, gay, instead of the truth, homosexual, then you’re doing the bidding of those who want to normalize homosexuality, especially when your children are the target of their indoctrination, and demand your use of gay in order to make it so.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 18, 2013 at 2:30 PM

To know whose bidding you are doing would require the strength of personal character to accept the truth. To accept the truth requires that one actually look for the truth. Before anyone today can find the truth, they must first accept that they have been lied to and deceived. Thus the search for truth dies before it even begins for the vast majority.

If you want to know the truth about the homosexual agenda it is out there. Start with “The Fabian Society”. In it’s war on liberty and freedom, those who have embraced Marxism devised a complex strategy. It is known as the “Trojan Horse Strategy”. What cannot be conquered from without, must be defeated from within.

Yes, the Homosexual Rights Movement was started by the Marxist Fabian Society, started for the express purpose of collapsing the Capitalist Societies of Europe and the United States by rotting away their moral and ethical standards. Their beliefs were and remain that once the moral and ethical foundations of Western Capitalist Society were destroyed, that those societies could be divided and turned against each other to the extent that those dedicated to Marxism would be able to gain sufficient political power to effect a political coup from within.

SWalker on March 18, 2013 at 2:50 PM

WaPo/ABC is out with a new poll finding record support for gay marriage at 58 percent.

Hmmm…..so why is it, that every time a popular VOTE is taken, “Gay Marriage” is defeated?

GarandFan on March 18, 2013 at 2:52 PM

GarandFan on March 18, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Because these polls never call anyone in the Heartland of America.

kingsjester on March 18, 2013 at 2:53 PM

You just couldn’t resist throwing that in. Race race race race race race race race race race race race.

Go listen to Dr. Carson’s CPAC speech. He’s infinitely wiser than you.

John the Libertarian on March 18, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Who is more obsessed with race:

Poster 1 writes a paragraph about the political motivations of gay men and makes one parenthetical reference to racism.

Poster 2 takes the one parenthetical reference to race from Poster 1, forgets or ignores everything else Poster 1 said and makes a response which does nothing but repeat the word “race” and accuses others of being obsessed with race.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Midas on March 18, 2013 at 2:53 PM

What’s most boring about these gay marriage threads is that the trolls come in and say the exact same things they did in all the previous twenty or so.

If this poll is so ‘true’, then why aren’t Dems in every state legislature putting forth bills to legalize it? The bills should pass hands-down right? Except the activists need the courts to get it done, preferably on a nationwide basis; can’t possibly let there be any place in the country that keeps a different view from the liberal orthodoxy.

You confuse my online “libfreeordie” persona with my actual personality. A lot of this is just a game for me. I am super progressive, but I’m also quite delightful to hang out with :) My partner is a midwestern country boy and has more than a few gay friends who are basically economic conservatives/libertarians who are highly skeptical of anti-poverty policy or progressivism in general. But they are big Ron Paul fans (and there are lots of other gay men like them). I have also hung out with their friends, which includes Republicans. This is online, not real life.
