CPAC, Day 3: Straw poll, Ted Cruz; Update: Rand Paul wins

posted at 4:01 pm on March 16, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Jeb Bush asked to be left off of the ballot of CPAC’s final-afternoon straw poll, and really, who can blame the guy? This is not the meager Republican bench of yesteryear, my friends:

1. NH Senator Kelly Ayotte

2. AZ Governor Jan Brewer

3. KS Governor Sam Brownback

4. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson

5. NJ Governor Chris Christie

6. TX Senator Ted Cruz

7. Former IN Governor Mitch Daniels

8. SC Governor Nikki Haley

9. LA Governor Bobby Jindal

10. OH Governor John Kasich

11. NM Governor Susana Martinez

12. VA Governor Bob McDonnell

13. Former AK Governor Sarah Palin

14. KY Senator Rand Paul

15. IN Governor Mike Pence

16. TX Governor Rick Perry

17. OH Senator Rob Portman

18. FL Senator Marco Rubio

19. WI Congressman Paul Ryan

20. Former PA Senator Rick Santorum

21. SC Senator Tim Scott

22. SD Senator John Thune

23. WI Governor Scott Walker

24. Other _______________________

25. Undecided

And CPAC picked what we might consider one of the lead guitarists of the rising band of young conservative rock stars, fresh off of royally aggravating the heck out of a few senior senators earlier this week, to give the conference’s keynote speech a little after 5 PM — follow along here, and I’ll update with the straw-poll results when they’re available.

Update: No surprises there — there was no majority, but Rand Paul followed by Marco Rubio together took nearly 50 percent of the overall vote: photo Screenshot2013-03-16at54534PM_zps6a9aaea5.png

Jeb Bush
asked to be left off of the ballot of CPAC’s final-afternoon straw poll, and really, who can blame the guy?

He would find out how shallow his support is, and it might hurt the Crown Prince and his “inevitability” meme he’s going to run on in 2016.

PappyD61 on March 16, 2013 at 4:15 PM

BTW, Report out now that House republican “leadership” is apparently going to go along with the SENATE and their “gang” to PASS AMNESTY!!!

SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKERSSSS!!!!

The gop leadership tells the base, kiss our ruling class arses, and re-elect us because we’re the only choice you have….BBBBWWWWWHHAHAHAHA.

PappyD61 on March 16, 2013 at 4:17 PM

Too Easy. Ted Cruz, or is it Ted Madison or James Cruz?

Bmore on March 16, 2013 at 4:18 PM

…no senile Senator or Lay-Down Lindsey?…guess they’ll be on the Sunday talk shows!

KOOLAID2 on March 16, 2013 at 4:19 PM

So sorry to see christie on the list! But it seems there are those who just love that guy who I would not say is a r at all?

Congrats to Ted Cruz. Everyone in congress hates him, and thinks he’s a jackass.

Ted Cruz would be except he’s technically a canuck…. so Rand or Bobby J are at the top of the class

phreshone on March 16, 2013 at 4:37 PM

1. NH Senator Kelly Ayotte
Obama Dirty Dozen dinner date, FAIL.

2. AZ Governor Jan Brewer
Disappointing.

3. KS Governor Sam Brownback
At least he left DC and is better than Sebelius.

4. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson
No, not falling for it. #next

5. NJ Governor Chris Christie
Good grief, he’s a Democrat, and a huge Progressive.

6. TX Senator Ted Cruz
So far, so good.

7. Former IN Governor Mitch Daniels
gag, Bush boy with a wife that tells him what to do apparently.

8. SC Governor Nikki Haley
Disappointment, backed Romney looking for the VEEP nod.

9. LA Governor Bobby Jindal
Tanned Gilligan, another Bushie, and frankly he’s boring.

10. OH Governor John Kasich
Obama golf buddy and he caved on ObamaCare for Ohio #bigfail

11. NM Governor Susana Martinez
Like her, she might be worth the VP nod next time.

12. VA Governor Bob McDonnell
Nope, disappointed, move along.

13. Former AK Governor Sarah Palin
Great speech, hit all the right notes, she’s never going to run for political office again. She made her choice. She’s a great rock-thrower though.

14. KY Senator Rand Paul
Mmmmm, not crazy about him. Caved on nominees getting a pass from Congress. Unsure about his Amnesty stance.

15. IN Governor Mike Pence
Jim Demint in the state house. Concerned he’s a squish, and he’s just a borrrrrrrrrring speaker.

16. TX Governor Rick Perry
Stay in Austin. Better yet, get ready to pack your bags because George P. Bush wants your job.

17. OH Senator Rob Portman
Fail in so many ways. Boring again, and ruling classer.

18. FL Senator Marco Rubio
Jeb Junior, kind of boring to listen too. HORRIBLE sellout on Amnesty.

19. WI Congressman Paul Ryan
Policy Robot who couldn’t help Romney carry his own home state. #verydisappointing

20. Former PA Senator Rick Santorum
No, not going to happen. Stay in the speaker circuit.

21. SC Senator Tim Scott
No nothing about him.

22. SD Senator John Thune
Fail, ruling class DC. Career politician.

23. WI Governor Scott Walker
He’ll back the gop no matter what. Great on unions, soft elsewhere. Threw Bachmann to the wolves over the Muslim brotherhood in the State Department issue. Not so sure about him anymore.

Only a couple there that are worthy of losing the next election.

Oh, wait, sorry, that’s going to Crown Prince Jeb’s job. He’ll give a gracious concession speech. See you here in exactly four years as we whine about the gop sucking and having lost another election.

PappyD61 on March 16, 2013 at 4:38 PM

If he can’t find a birth certificate or if John McCain call him a monkey or something, he is a lock for 2016.

Fortune cookies say Jeb Bush not going to get GOP nomination in 2016.

The cookies have pics which show GOP power brokers holding frantic minority search as you read this but having rough time as most minorities feel that they are entitled to money and benefits like they see on TV game shows.

The cookies also say that you will be unhappy Pappy for next five decades.

I don’t want Palin to run but she is far from a “lounge act”. She is one of the few that when she speaks – a lot of people listen. She is indirectly or directly responsible for most if not all the “young bucks” in the Senate.

She deserves and needs a place at the head table for both 2014 and 2016.

When Chris Christie, who rightfully was not invited and is essentially a progressive democrat, places as high as 4th place in a straw poll at a conservative convention he was not even invited to, you have to wonder about the value of this straw poll.

Congrat’s to Senator Paul on the straw pole. This fellow is a far cry from his papa.

I hope the GOP establishment can begin to understand the social issues they get tied up in their own underwear are not national issues. They need to be taken locally (AR, ND). See Rand Paul’s response to SSM. Nah, ain’t gonna happen… Fortunately the 52% of 25 to 30 year olds at CPAC have figured that out. Might have to wait a little while longer for common sense and liberty to run the party.

In the mean time I am concerned we’ll get Hillary and 8 more years of progressive hate, intolerance and feel good nonsense The GOP machine can’t allow a ‘wacko birds’ to take a presidential primary. We’ll end up with a dip stick like Christie. “…the harshest of all sounds is the braying of the ass.”
