Video: Passerby with concealed carry in Wisconsin saves woman’s life

posted at 10:01 am on March 14, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

We hear plenty from gun-control advocates that firearms don’t prevent or stop attacks, and how they’re more likely to end up being used against victims instead. Tell that to Charlie Blackmore, who recently acquired a concealed-carry permit in Wisconsin after the legislature recently made them legal. Blackmore, a Marine Corps veteran, wasn’t being attacked himself, but was driving down the street early in the morning when he saw a large man kicking something in the sidewalk. When Blackmore realized the “something” was in fact a woman, he stopped the attack without firing a shot — and probably saved the woman’s life:

A Marine Corps veteran was able to stop a man early Tuesday, March 12th from nearly kicking a woman to death. It happened near 102nd and Lincoln, and Wisconsin’s concealed carry law made his efforts possible.

Charlie Blackmore was driving home from work at 4:00 a.m. along Lincoln Avenue when he saw something on the sidewalk. Blackmore didn’t realize it was a woman on the ground being kicked in the head and stomach until he got closer.

That’s when he jumped out of his car and sprung into action.

“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” Blackmore said.

Blackmore held his gun on the suspect and called West Allis police. He says several times while waiting for police to arrive, the attacker moved toward him.

“I mean I’ve already made it up in mind that if he came at me I was going to have to take him down and I told him that. I warned him multiple times not to come towards me because he was a big guy and I wasn’t playing around and he didn’t seem like he was playing around,” Blackmore said.

If you think that the woman couldn’t have been killed with the man’s feet, think again. In 2011, more than twice as many murder victims died from “personal weapons” — hands, feet — as did from rifles of all kinds, not just “assault weapons.” In this case, the man was the woman’s jilted ex-boyfriend who had been stalking her. She might be considering a concealed-carry permit next, if the boyfriend isn’t put away for a very long time.

Kudos to Blackmore. There’s obviously nothing wrong with a USMC veteran carrying a lawfully licensed gun (particularly since he’s been trained on how to handle the weapon safely). The $64k question is, how do you keep the thug who was beating up the woman from packing heat. I hope we can all agree that he has forfeited his 2nd Amendment rights.

Time Lord on March 14, 2013 at 10:16 AM

This is why we need to have very strict controls for Veterans…as a Non-Serving Marine, this man was probably teetering on the edge of a violent flash-back.

The victom of this incident was lucky he was not shot. I believe the best thing the Police could have done was confiscate this potentially dangerous veteran’s fire arm and commit him for obsrvation. (Diane Feinstein)

I think Charlie should have gone to the nearest house and blasted a couple rounds through the door. That would have gotten the attacker’s attention and allowed the woman to run to a safe zone somewhere…. right?

Semper Fi, mister!

The size difference is why firearms for self-defense is so important. The perp thought he could intimidate the little guy, make him back down. The only thing (well, having been a Marine might contribute, too) that gave him the leverage to stand his ground was the lethal weapon in his hand, and the will to use it.

He was arrested and charged, giving him a police record which will show up when the dealer runs a background check, at which point he walks out empty handed.

Sure, he could try to obtain a firearm illegally, and roll the dice on the risks involved. (“That back-alley dealer didn’t look like no cop!”)

Maybe the attacker couldn’t read the nearby “Assault Free Zone!” sign.

Absolutely….an ordinary citizen shouldn’t be usurping a police officers job here. He should have immediately called 911, stayed a safe distance away and waited for the police to arrive so he could direct officers to the incident and not gotten personally involved.

Its a good thing this will never get coverage in the LSM, otherwise more concerned citizens may get the idea that they can take the law into their own hands and interfere in what should be exclusively police matters.

CurtZHP on March 14, 2013 at 10:21 AM

For the record, “arrested and charged” does give you a police record, but does not indicate being guilty of a crime nor should it preclude your legally acquiring a firearm. Innocent people are “arrested and charged” all the time. That’s why we have a court system where you appear before a jury of your peers. And why, legally, you are innocent until proven guilty.

If we barred anyone who was arrested from ever owning a gun, you’ve just opened a very easy route for a power-hungry government to block your gun ownership without ever having to directly ban guns.

It doesn’t appear to be “garden-variety” and it certainly wasn’t “victory-garden variety.” You might have to wait until QOTD this evening and ask the experts (Scrumpy, Sparky, Jackie, SWalker, et al). It doesn’t appear to be an “organic garden-variety” although it could possibly be an “organic patch-variety.” It might be a glen-variety or a dale-variety or a glen-dale-variety or a glade-variety, etc. I’m not an expert. To me, it sounds like it might have been a valley-variety or canyon-variety, but like I said, I’m not an expert.

Hopefully, the woman is OK and it isn’t a “vegetable-garden-variety.” OK, I should have stopped…

Well ya – that’s the Dems’ solution to rape and their justification for not allowing women to be armed. Blow a whistle, run to a safe zone, and if that’s not enough, spew some foul bodily fluids at the rapist. Anything to avoid admitting that perhaps a better solution is to pull your CCW and slow him down or stop him permananetly with a well placed piece of lead (or 2 or 3 or 17).
This all came out when the Colorado legislature was debating the Dems’ new gun control bills – most of which they have since passed. Due to the many stupid embarrassing comments by Dems, the Dem sponsor of the bill to prohibit CCW on college campuses withdrew the bill before final passage.

Unfortunately, that is not just a possibility. It happens in all to many cases. In the end, you can’t protect women who choose to put themselves at risk. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t intervene in the moment.

The reality is that if you choose to intervene or even to defend yourself you are risking some very difficult consequences, gun or no gun, even if you do everything right.

When will we make this crucial step?

JFKY on March 14, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Turns Professor Higgins’ plaintive cry in My Fair Lady on its head:

“Why can’t a woman be more like a man?”

becomes

“Why can’t a man be more like a woman?”

Not to say that beating women is what makes a man, a man. More, that when a man beats a woman, sometimes you have to shoot him. Requiring some sort of firearm. The Utopia where men act like women hasn’t arrived yet.

Paul-Cincy on March 14, 2013 at 11:23 AM

“Why can’t a man be more like a woman?”

The feminizing Left has been working on that very issue for decades.

“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” Blackmore said.

Not quite the crazed winger ready to cap the nearest passerby we keep hearing about on Constant no-Carry News (CNN)

Very well done, sir.

If the man who was attacking a defenseless woman was only using “garden variety slaps”, Joe Biden would have just driven by without intervening. But in this case, clearly he would have shot off his shotgun from his balcony.

I did miss that. Wow.

Here’s the HotAir thread on it, courtesy of MKH.

The West Allis police chief says these types of situations really are judgement calls for gun owners. While they don’t encourage this behavior, they appreciate citizens watching out for each other as long as they do it legally and are willing to accept the consequences.

The words you were looking for, Mr Police Chief, are “Thank” and “You”. Not the thinly veiled threat.

I really don’t have the right words, but all i can do is appreciate what you did for my
mom.I really am thankful for people like you, I just found out what happen yesterday i
wish i could have thanked you in person. You are really appreciated i don’t know what i would do if my mom was not here today and you prevented that from happening.

I absolutely despise people who would prevent us from defending ourselves. Human evil exists, and we not only have a right to defend ourselves, we have a duty to defend ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Right you are. I guess I sort of assumed he’s getting convicted, especially in light of the situation. (The woman’s testimony and obvious injuries, the Marine’s testimony, and the police report.)

Bottom line: the guy’s going to have this on his record.

Or blasted a warning shot through the door of his car….

I really wish verbaluce and libfreeordie would dare show their faces on this thread to tell us how it is stunningly obvious that this woman didn’t need a weapon and it wouldn’t have done any good.

Because that is the liberal creed. And it would have killed this lady. How many women have died because of liberalism?

Vanceone on March 14, 2013 at 11:41 AM

I suggest an education campaign where they talk sternly to all the men in the area to teach them not to beat, kick and kill wymynz.

dentarthurdent on March 14, 2013 at 11:16 AM

The obvious solution. Only the wymynz are allowed to teach, and attendance by all the brutes, i.e. men, mandatory. It is now a moral imperative to raise taxes so that the government can fund this essential program.

Vanceone on March 14, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Not to mention the ones that were never born.

CurtZHP on March 14, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Once again, Reality trumps The Narrative, not that it will matter to the Gun-Grabbers as they enjoy the bliss of their ignorance.

Another Drew on March 14, 2013 at 11:47 AM

The $64k question is, how do you keep the thug who was beating up the woman from packing heat. I hope we can all agree that he has forfeited his 2nd Amendment rights.

Well, duh, that’s generally what happens when someone commits a felony. And the fellow may have already been convicted of a felony. So how do you keep a criminal who wishes to break one or more laws from breaking another?

He can’t legally purchase a firearm if he is a felon. NICS should already have a red flag on him for this attack (domestic violence), so no FFL will sell to him.

So his choices are: buy a gun on the street (illegally), or find a home or a store with guns and steal one or more (illegally), or try to find a personal gun owner trying to sell a gun on the open market. And possession is also illegal for him, so no matter how he obtains a firearm, he’s breaking at least two laws.

Of course, battery is also illegal, as is murder, but that didn’t seem to slow this guy down one whit.

I R A Darth Aggie on March 14, 2013 at 11:55 AM

what would the cops do, hand out ticktes, and put on DARE classes?

LincolntheHun on March 14, 2013 at 10:23 AM

If a cop ever tries to hand me a tickte I will politely refuse.

Bishop on March 14, 2013 at 10:24 AM

You never can tell where a tickte has been.

Solaratov on March 14, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Thank you, Charlie Blackmore. Well done, Marine!

ITguy on March 14, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Well, it’s noon as I type this. The trolls should be getting out of bed right about now.

CurtZHP on March 14, 2013 at 12:00 PM

he stopped the attack without firing a shot — and probably saved the woman’s life:

In our finest bastions of sociology, that doesn’t count as defense, as he didn’t kill the attacker.

Peer reviewed for the dumbest impressed by the words, peer reviewed.

MNHawk on March 14, 2013 at 12:00 PM

He was arrested and charged, giving him a police record which will show up when the dealer runs a background check, at which point he walks out empty handed.

CurtZHP on March 14, 2013 at 10:21 AM

What about getting convicted? Arrested and charged doesn’t necessarily denote guilt.

Happy Nomad on March 14, 2013 at 10:29 AM

“Under indictment” for a crime which could put one in prison for a year or more is sufficient to disqualify them from a firearm purchase (per ATFE form 4473).
