Video: North Korean propaganda exposes hellish Orwellian experience of American life; Update: Fake

posted at 3:21 pm on March 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Danger Room, a reminder that NorK propaganda is so over the top that it’s difficult to tell the real thing from a heavy-handed fake. Is this real or just someone’s idea of a goof? On the one hand, it makes sense as a crude way to keep up morale in a nation-sized prison camp where the people are so poor that they have to eat grass. Convince them that the rest of the world, including and especially their archenemy, lives the same way and suddenly life under the Kim dynasty doesn’t seem so bad. That explains the odd focus here on Americans drinking snow, I take it: By comparison, North Koreans’ foliage-based standard of living looks high. On the other hand, c’mon. What’s that goofy bit in the middle about a former Republican pol from Oregon doing here? Even North Koreans surely know that Bob Packwood’s doing better than that. And in fairness, the coffee at my local convenience store does taste like it’s made from snow.

I’ll give them one thing: Gun violence among the population there surely is lower, for very good authoritarian reasons.

Update (3/16): Nope, it’s a fake.

Damn! The video is no longer available! And I was looking forward to seeing the part on how we not only eat our young, but we have a show on it every Wednesday night on the Food Network!

Well that was quick.

HotAirian on March 13, 2013 at 3:27 PM

The Soviet Union did the same thing. They’d show movies like The Grapes of Wrath, and portray that as the true America.

Of course, in the end, the Soviet’s might’ve been at the right place, but in the wrong time.

Obama and the Democrats just might get us there.

No video? Well, personally I think there should be no North Korea – as in turn their portion of the world into a skating rink.

Average NorK response: “Tents?!? Those lucky bastages have tents?!?”

That vid looks like something the far-Left came up with to show what life was like here for the poor and the minorities under the Bush administration.

When Viktor Belenko defected in 1976 with the Russian Mig 25 and was brought to America he was overwhelmed in a bad way. He thought the supermarkets and cool stuff in the USA was all a ruse as that kind of stuff is what the soviets did.

arnold ziffel on March 13, 2013 at 3:48 PM

When I first saw this on LiveLeak the other day I thought for sure that there would be some scenes from Occupy somewhere amongst the footage, sadly no. Hey Norks, do it again with Occupoop videos then it will be even more funnier than this.

In the book on that pilot that flew his MiG-25 to Japan in the 70′s, he recalled seeing this type of propaganda film in the USSR. In that film, they showed American workers eating hamburgers and hot dogs and said it was all they could afford to eat. Lt. Belenko says what he saw is that the workers were sitting on the bumper of a car and that there were cars lined up and down the street. He said he thought to himself “I’d be happy to eat that if I could afford a car.” Another film said members of the American Communist Party were discriminated against. He thought “Whoa! They have a Communist party there? That would be like having a capitalist party here!”

The point is that smart people can see right through the propaganda. For example, if the DPRK has little cakes to give to Americans, how come the NorKs don’t get any?

Odysseus on March 13, 2013 at 3:51 PM

It never snows in Los Angeles. Maybe that’s why we’re all dying of hunger and thirst.

Odysseus on March 13, 2013 at 3:51 PM

I guess one would have to be well-traveled to observe that half the film was shot in French subway stations. Oh. Wait. That’s right. American cities are sometimes disguised to look European! Hey, if we have the money to do that, why don’t we feed our people instead?

Why are all the starving people fat?

How can they afford to buy guns but not food?

I want to try me some of those Nork coffees and cakes.

stvnscott on March 13, 2013 at 3:58 PM

The Soviet Union did the same thing. They’d show movies like The Grapes of Wrath, and portray that as the true America.

I remember in the ’70′s the Soviets eagerly anticipating an American-made documentary about poverty in the US. They were preparing to show it all over the evil empire. They had to scrap those plans when the film came out and the Politburo got a look at how the poor in America actually lived which was a whole lot better than the average person behind the Curtain.

GWB on March 13, 2013 at 4:38 PM

Actually, maybe a turducken is a great way to counter this? “Heck yeah, we eat our birds! But, we have so dang many big plump ones to eat, that we shove them inside one another, then eat them all at once! Then a nap! Woohoo!”

GWB on March 13, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I recall a Soviet Block lady who escaped and got over her back in the 80s. The neighborhood ladies took her to the local grocery store, and when she saw the meat counter she freaked out – telling the other ladies to grab more carts and get the meat while they could. She broke into tears when they finally got it through to her that the meat counter always had lots of meat.

KOOLAID2 on March 13, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Gee, one would think it never snows in North Korea, although many American troops from the 1950′s would disagree.

Maybe the Norks should send someone here in July, when it gets hot even in Minnesota. Let them film a Wal-Mart–it’s not great, but at least there’s food on the shelves.

And Americans eat birds for food? Did the Norks film John Kerry shooting a goose in Ohio? Might not be a bad idea, there are far too many geese here, and their poop piles up near every pond.

Somebody should broadcast a video back at North Korea, perhaps from South Korea or Japan. How about a satellite photo of the Far East at night, where the DMZ is the line between dazzling lights to the south and darkness to the north. But do any of the peons in North Korea have a TV to watch it?

Over the top? Looks more like they pieced together clips from various DNC and MSM propaganda clips from over the years, starting with the homeless during the Reagan years and much of the network nightly news standard MSM fare from the 1988 election year — when people were (allegedly) still suffering severely during the recession and GHWB didn’t care.

In fact, in this economy this kind of crap would have been all over the network nightly news, CNN, and MSNBC in 2012 if a Republican had been the incumbent.
