Video: North Korean propaganda exposes hellish Orwellian experience of American life; Update: Fake

posted at 3:21 pm on March 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Danger Room, a reminder that NorK propaganda is so over the top that it’s difficult to tell the real thing from a heavy-handed fake. Is this real or just someone’s idea of a goof? On the one hand, it makes sense as a crude way to keep up morale in a nation-sized prison camp where the people are so poor that they have to eat grass. Convince them that the rest of the world, including and especially their archenemy, lives the same way and suddenly life under the Kim dynasty doesn’t seem so bad. That explains the odd focus here on Americans drinking snow, I take it: By comparison, North Koreans’ foliage-based standard of living looks high. On the other hand, c’mon. What’s that goofy bit in the middle about a former Republican pol from Oregon doing here? Even North Koreans surely know that Bob Packwood’s doing better than that. And in fairness, the coffee at my local convenience store does taste like it’s made from snow.

I’ll give them one thing: Gun violence among the population there surely is lower, for very good authoritarian reasons.

Update (3/16): Nope, it’s a fake.

North Korea needs to understand that we are feeling a little crabby today. Perhaps twenty or thirty precisely placed Tomahawks would best illustrate that point.

What was it Mom used to say about bullies? Oh yeah, they can dish it out but they can’t take it.

Is it time for Kerry to promise one-on-one unconditional talks if they’ll stop saying mean things?

Drained Brain on April 16, 2013 at 10:45 AM

So it turns out that Baby Kim’s nuts aren’t that big after all.

Ward Cleaver on April 16, 2013 at 10:48 AM

a total climbdown after all this nonsense will be difficult to explain for the ruling clique in the DPRK.

Not really. The Norks can just lie to their own people and even make a video of Seoul in flames. The people are obligated to believe it. Or else.

The Rogue Tomato on April 16, 2013 at 10:48 AM

featured the burning effigies of Kim Jong-Un

Lil Kim (aka the Chosen one) is lucky the ROK’s have shown so much restraint thus far.

The only thing holding them back is they understand the costs they will have to incur to unify the peninsula…a couple trillion over a decade or so. Repair the damage in the South, rebuild the North, and have to find a way to feed the remainders of what was once a population of 24 million…albeit sharply reduced.

North Korea demands apology

0bama obliges in 3…. 2…. 1….

UltimateBob on April 16, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Eh, the Phat Chunk needs anything he can get his sausagy fingers around to make himself look like a world leader, so of course they will make a big deal out of a few effigys being burned.

Rivers of blood, fields of bones, yankee pig dogs all die! Yeah yeah, settle down, Blimpie.

Bishop on April 16, 2013 at 10:50 AM

I’ve got your apology right here.

50sGuy on April 16, 2013 at 10:53 AM

I’d still expect to see some fireworks, though, because a total climbdown after all this nonsense will be difficult to explain for the ruling clique in the DPRK.

North Korea doesn’t have a free press. State media can produce propaganda showing a successful test and there’s no way to contradict that claim. Indoctrination is a powerful tool.

blammm on April 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM

I’d like to apologize to him. Personally. In spades.

Best just to ignore NoKo.

Hey! No need to be greedy…I’m sure we can share a few more than that.

Not to mention, don’t we still have a few Iowa-Class Battleships sitting at berth with nothing to do?

Let’s remind the runt about how gun-crazy Americans really are…and the Navy can get in some extra range time to boot!

Win-Win!

BlaxPac on April 16, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Not really. The Norks Democrats can just lie to their own people voters and even make a video of Seoul in flames Paul Ryan pushing an old lady off a cliff. The people voters will are obligated to believe it. Or else.

The Rogue Tomato on April 16, 2013 at 10:48 AM

This tactic works even easier with Obama voters.

I expect John F’n Kerry will have to make further concessions to Red China to get North Korea to back down from their threats. Funny how that works.

slickwillie2001 on April 16, 2013 at 11:15 AM

It’s time for someone to turn the tables on NK and start threatening them. Unlike Iraq circa 2002, I think North Korea knows how precarious its position is and would quickly comply.

.
I can’t get the notion out of my mind, that this is all an “orchestrated” distraction between Barack, and Kim.

listens2glenn on April 16, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Oh, those NorKs. They be crazy!

Thank You US Navy!

Apparently people have the right to free speech in South Korea, and they aren’t crazy about Krazy Kim III. If the North Korean population had the right to free speech, their adulation of Krazy Kim might be rather muted.

So Krazy Kim is now telling free people in a foreign country, “Ruv me or I’ll kill you!”

I remember effigies of George W. Bush being burned in Tehran several years ago. What if GWB had had the same reaction as Krazy Kim?

Steve Z on April 16, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Perhaps the missiles Pyongyang planned to test aren’t up for the task?

I think that is a distinct possibility. And little chubs knows that a failure is likely. Heck, they’ve only had one that really worked. Having another one get 3/4ths of a mile downrange before it craps out would be, well, embarrassing.

Or listen to NPR in the last 100?

Honestly, probably less than a single cumulative hour with any of those. :)

Midas on April 16, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Can’t the Norks just make bigger and more effigies, burn them wiht fanfare, and we’d be done with the episode?

Sir Napsalot on April 16, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Will li’l Kim become unexpectedly ill after not delivering on his fiery rhetoric? …or does the DPRK military leadership believe in him as the supreme authority?

Send Michelle over to slap this child upside the head and end this tantrum before the belt comes out.

Oh yeah, keep pressing their buttons. DPRK needs to jump the shark such that they can get a royal beat down.
