Joe Biden on domestic violence: Watch out for stuff that goes beyond your “garden-variety slap across the face”; Update: Full context added

posted at 2:41 pm on March 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via the Free Beacon, don’t bother complaining. Skip the Ted Kennedy mentions and “what if a Republican…” hypotheticals in the comments. It’s pointless. Just pause a moment to absorb the double standard and go about your day. Besides, if there’s any liberal who enjoys extra immunity for something like this, it’s crazy Uncle Joe. He’s supposed to be an idiot. What’s worse, this or him telling shotgun owners to pump and fire through the door when they see someone lurking outside? And he paid no price for that outside of righty blogs, right? QED.

Here’s all I want: I want him to demonstrate on a male volunteer what a “garden-variety slap across the face” looks like. Let’s see what Special J regards as being no big deal.

Update: Ah, turns out the clip cuts off without capturing the end of his sentence. “Garden variety” is an odd term to use, but Biden did end up condemning that too:

We’ve learned that certain behaviors on the part of an abuser portend much more danger than other behaviors. For example, if an abuser has attempted to strangle his victim, if he has threatened to shoot her, if he has sexually assaulted her, and there’s a number of other signs, about eight others. These are tell-tale signs to say this isn’t your garden-variety slap across the face which is totally unacceptable in and of itself.

There was a time when liberal feminists tried pushing the notion that yelling at a woman was a form of violence. Some even advocated women to call police if it happened with a couple living under the same roof, as a form of domestic violence. The idea never gained much traction, though.

Even if it did, the Left isn’t going to complain here. Joe also said he would rather have a convicted felon having a gun than a fugitive running around with one–another free pass for more of his idiocy.

I like the idea of Joe giving a demonstration of what he means, using a crash test dummy. Either Reid or Pelosi would suffice.

“garden-variety slap across the face”

a/k/a

Not a “slap-slap”

As in:

“Officer, yes, I slapped my wife, but it wasn’t a slap-slap. There’s a difference. Just ask Joe Biden and Whoopi Goldberg. There are DEGREES of violence against women when you are a Democrat…by the way, here’s my voter registration card proving that I’m a card-carrying member of the Stop The Republicans’ War On Women Party.”

Del Dolemonte on March 13, 2013 at 2:58 PM

Joe Biden like all democrats apparently believes there is nothing wrong with just a little garden variety slap across the face. He’s obviously a by-product of the predominately liberal/democrat “garden variety face slapper” culture.

Schools obviously need to set up education programs to train these young democrats/liberals that even garden variety face slaps are in-appropriate. Maybe have an annual Take Back the Garden Rally on select college campuses and hand out some pamphlets on the quad.

But, by no means, should we allow the garden variety slap victims have access to a garden variety 9mm to protect themselves.

Every day I become more and more convinced that there are two Americas and it really is time for a divorce; we simply cannot live together any longer and the sooner we get the split over the better off everyone will be.

“This isn’t your garden-variety slap across the face, which is –”

Which is what? Which is “inexcusable in its own right, as we all know,” or which is “no big deal in and of itself”? I’d feel a lot better going into hysterics over this clip if the video didn’t cut out mid-sentence at the end. Not that calling a slap across the face “garden-variety” is a wise move in any context, but it’s Joe Biden after all…

Courtesybears on March 13, 2013 at 3:57 PM

If they didn’t have the media covering for them, the Democrats would have trouble getting anyone elected as dog-catcher. What this means in practical terms is tha Democrats are more likely to ignore the perspective of ther constituents, and less likely to really qualify for the job of representing them. The next time you hear that the country is going to hell, remember to thank the media.

You left out the crucial facts here….first, he drugged her. Then he sodomized her while she was unconscious. And since he didn’t beat her or resort to threats, it was the educated man’s rape. Plus, she didn’t voice an affirmative “no”.

Not rape rape.

BobMbx on March 13, 2013 at 4:13 PM

there is a difference between a serious injury and a typical slap in the face, because a serious injury requires a longer recovery time and may not heal completely- it may even be life threatening in some cases. so maybe he was specifically talking about victims of more serious injuries getting the amount of help they need, which would be more than someone who just got a slap. i don’t really know because i haven’t seen the whole video but we can’t just assume that he’s doing something wrong here.

Allah, you’re better than this.

That was clearly a deceptive edit, the video cuts out mid-sentence after all.

Biden was making the valid point that some kinds of domestic violence are worse than others because certain types of violence indicate a criminal intent that is more serious and psychologically driven than typical abuse.

Typical domestic violence is nowhere near as serious as things like rape or murder, which are examples of the kinds of crimes Biden is saying these behaviors may indicate a predisposition to.

Just because you are saying that certain types of domestic violence are worse than others, does NOT mean that you are saying that the lesser evils are perfectly ok and acceptable. That is a foolish logical fallacy.

right2bright on March 13, 2013 at 5:10 PM

You have to be pretty spineless to abandon all your principles and try to wholesale copy your enemy just because you (narrowly) lost a couple presidential elections. You DO know that republicans won big in 2010, though, right? So “last two” is wrong.

If you copy liberals, then yes, you are letting them decide the rules. Since you will copy whatever they do, they can control your behavior. If you have principles you can still criticize their doubles standards and dirt tricks without doing it yourself.

Nice to see your justification for cheating, though. So if people cheat and they don’t lose as a direct result (the cheating may not have even been why they won), you think that means it is a matter of “preservation” that you cheat as well.

Problem with that is, as soon as you cheat, you lose all right to complain about them because youre no better than they are in that regard. Everyone is a cheater, only they are a lot better at it than you are, so you lose anyway, on top of having lost all your credibility.

Really this man wants to be President?

1. Most abusers don’t jump to choking right away. Many start with the “Garden Variety Slap” and progress. It why one the smarest things to do is to get out if slapping does start.
2.It sounds like Biden states “hey if not not doing these signs he probaly not going to kill you…… just maybe hospitalize you, blacken an eye ect…
3. Let leave abuse to the experts and when they say to get out. Friends I know were told once it starts being physical to get out. Maybe that why friends I have that were abused are alive.

Sorry, but I’m still not giving him a pass.
That there’s such a thing in Joe’s world as a “garden variety slap in the face” suggests he thinks physical abuse is a commonplace everyday occurrence everywhere.

It’s like the suggestion that all men are potential rapists.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

CurtZHP on March 13, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Tell you what. Slap your significant other in the face and see if they find it “garden variety.”

CurtZHP on March 13, 2013 at 8:02 PM

I understand the heavily edited clip came from NRO. Which makes them no better than MSNBC in my opinion.
The Right Scoop blogger was p-o’d at them and so am I.

Um, isn’t that darned near the Muslim standard for treatment of women?

{O.O}

Well, if Joe were addressing the NAACP, he would use a more appropriate phase: “bitch-slap” instead of “garden-variety slap in the face”.

Is “garden-variety” rape like “legitimate” rape, I wonder?

He also talks of “sexual assault” as a “sign” of danger, along with strangling. Joe may be on to something there. Liberals advise any of you little ladies out there seeing these signs should definitely alert the authorities – don’t escalate the situation, leave the automatic fire to the Police, FBI, ATF, DEA, EPA and DHS.

In case we are hearing Joe Biden out of context, the context is: Joe Biden is an idiot.

virgo on March 14, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Nah. More like that scene in the movie Airplane where everybody lined up to get a shot at the loony loudmouth dingbat.

Maybe that’s where Joe gets his ideas, from the Zucker brothers.

That would be a real shame though, for that imbicile (apologies to Moe Howard) to defile a comic masterpiece.

Mr. Grump on March 14, 2013 at 7:27 AM

Pal, this is what the left does all of the time

right2bright on March 13, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Just because Bill Clinton rapes a woman, and Democrat women are cool with that, doesn’t mean I should also aspire to such.

MNHawk on March 14, 2013 at 9:30 AM

Context is important, but can you offer an “out of context” scenario in which “garden variety slap across the face” means anything else?

BobMbx

Have anything to say now that the full context has been added?

Yeah, probably not.

My point is made. I was right to wait to be outraged until I heard the full context. This wasn’t even newsworthy unless the last part of his statement was clipped off.

The left does it too so this isn’t a condemnation of one side. I remember when MSNBC clipped the Sandy Hook father’s question to the audience to make it look like they were heckling him. Either way it’s a cheap BS move and it’s why I demand full context before letting myself get angry over these things anymore.

The video is ‘unavailable’.

There is no such thing as a ‘garden variety slap across the face’. Once someone has stepped over the line and gotten physical, it could easily escalate to anything.

I don’t know if his experts are idiots or this is just Joe’s brain working it out in front of us again, but regardless of whether or not he pulled his punch (pardon the pun) on this at the end where he says that it’s not acceptable either. he’s wrong to frame it this way.

Some abusers indeed can escalate faster, but ALL abusers start with crossing the line by taking the fight to the physical realm. Crossing the line is where it starts and who is to say where it ends? Mr Slap Across the Face could turn into Mr Punch in the Head with the next blow.

It’s this simple: Put your hands on your partner in an angry way, you’re ‘there’. Now the only question is your partner going to live through the exchange.

And regardless of what he said at the end, Joe is still a mental midget. The last person who should be front and center giving speeches for something like this.

I would also add that you can abuse your partner with just your words, it doesn’t have to get physical. The words may not kill them, but it will change who they are. I’ve been on the receiving end of this myself. Emotional abuse is not just ‘having a fight’.

It’s all about control and objectifying your partner to the point where humanity is lost.

Again, he’s the wrong yahoo to give this speech. Hate to say it but this one, Obama should have given. Joe just doesn’t have enough upstairs to pull it off.
