Six months later, where are Benghazi’s survivors?

posted at 1:21 pm on March 12, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday marked six months from the date that four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, the first American ambassador murdered in the line of duty in 33 years.  While the Obama administration begrudgingly cooperated with Congressional panels looking into the attack and the White House response by sending officials to testify, one group still has not yet been made available.  CBS’ Sharyl Attkisson wonders — where are the survivors?

Today marks six months since the September 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya in which four Americans were killed, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Some watchdog groups, members of the media and Republican members of Congress are asking: Where are the more than two dozen U.S. personnel who survived the attack but haven’t been seen nor heard from in public since? There were also an undisclosed number of witnesses at the U.S. compounds in Tripoli but they also have not spoken publicly.

In a recent press report, Secretary of State John Kerry said he visited one survivor at “Bethesda hospital,” and referred to him a “remarkably courageous person who is doing very, very well.” Kerry added, “I’ve called his wife and talked to her.” But the identities, condition and testimony of the survivors and witnesses have been closely held from the public.

Republicans demanded more information about Benghazi in recent weeks before they would agree to allow Obama Administration nominees to move forward in the Senate. A source familiar with material turned over to the Senate Intelligence Committee by the Obama Administration in response tells CBS News that long sought-after FBI transcripts of some survivors were included but had been “blacked out” or redacted. Three Senate Republicans including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., say they want the survivors to be made available for interviews about what happened the night of the attacks.

Attkisson isn’t exactly impressed with the transparency of the Obama administration in other areas of this issue, either:

At a press conference on November 14, 2012, President Obama stated that his administration has provided all information regarding “what happened in Benghazi.” Yet, when CBS News asked for White House photos from the night of the attacks, surveillance video that was promised last November, and answers to outstanding questions, a White House official told us that there would be no further comment.

CBS News has filed multiple Freedom of Information requests for Benghazi-related material, but none has been provided. Judicial Watch, a watchdog group, is suing the U.S. government in an attempt to receive some of the denied information.

Why keep the information from the public? Remember, the annex to which the consulate personnel initially retreated belonged to the CIA, and their testimony undoubtedly involves sensitive areas.  However, that doesn’t explain why the Senate and House panels are not getting access to the survivors and their complete testimony, at least in closed session.

Given the very clear failure of communication and preparation that resulted in the sacking of the consulate and the death of an ambassador, it shouldn’t take six months for Congress to get answers and to demand accountability from the executive branch.  Thus far, though, it seems like the White House wants this to be the last word:

I read a report that John Kerry visited one survivor in the hospital – very strange that the MSM is not asking questions?

Oh – wait ….

Stonewalling works for Obama because the MSM are pulling for him.

And that indeed makes a difference.

I think its who these survivors are as much as anything else that the administration wants to keep out of the public.

It wouldn’t look very good if a whole bunch of folks in the “consulate” worked for an agency other than the State Department.

Another possibility is less incriminating for Obama. The individuals just don’t want to be public figures and further targets of Islamic terrorism. I think that is likely to be true, as far as it goes. The thing is, it wouldn’t preclude them from testifying before Congress with appropriate safeguards, but is a convenient excuse.

Since this is playing out like a conspiracy theory, I’ll go one better and bet there’s people in Congress and the Senate that know what happened over in Benghazi and don’t plan on exposing this information to the public. Why? still needs to be answered, along with who was told to STAND DOWN?

Rovin on March 12, 2013 at 1:42 PM

There were some interviews with family members of survivors at hospitals soon after Benghazi…I think on appeared in the WSJ…then nothing. Somebody doesn’t want these people to talk and most of the State Run Media are happy to comply. Kudos to Sharyl Attkisson!

In a recent press report, Secretary of State John Kerry said he visited one survivor at “Bethesda hospital,”

“Hi. Do you know who I am? I’m reporting for duty here in order to tell you I’m glad to see you weren’t the last one to die for a mistake. By the way, you didn’t by any chance see an old magic hat, size 10 and three quarters, when you were over there, did you?”

Wow, it’s Low-IQ Democrat Troll City at the C-BS comments…

Today marks the 6 month anniversary of when Mitt Romney exceeded his authority and ran his mouth publicly attacking the President over what was happening in Libya, in real time, while it was still going on.

This whole witch hunt by the GOP was nothing more than their spin machine trying desperately to deflect scrutiny from that event. Yet another gigantic, foot in mouth faux pas by Mitt.

It should have died with Mitt’s bid for the Presidency, but you know how Fox News, Rush and the Tea Party’s are once they get going on something.

In fact, they have so little to really show the US public for all their Congressional efforts it’s no wonder they have to manufacture dribble to make fodder out of. Just like the latest “drones killing American’s” manufactured drama.

i think benghazi should be investigated, but too bad the republicans don’t also want to investigate how the pro-israeli neocons got us into the iraq war, when iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, and saddam had no WMD’s, the iraq war which pat buchanan calls the WORST military blunder since vietnam, and dick cheney, feith, pearle, wolfowitz, lieberman, kristol, judy miller, kagan, and the wurmser couple, are still walking around free when they should be behind bars like jonathan pollard

LOL, RepubliCONs just keep stirring the pot. There’s nothing there RepubliCONs, no big fat scandal for you to embarrass the administration with, nothing at all for you loons that should be tending to the nations business, but aren’t. Reminds me of all the hubbub about the Presidential ****** (turned out to be a lie by Ms. Paula Jones) and the Whitewater “Scandal” (Not one stinking criminal prosecution after 8 years of the principal targets). HAW, HAW, HAW RepubliCONs treading water and grasping at straws again. Maybe if the morons stop now, the public will forget about it by 2014, and it won’t be an embarrassment going into the elections.

Tell it to bin Laden who spent 6 years in an air conditioned mansion in Pakistan until President Obama ordered him found and executed.

(This last babble is by a true Democrat Troll, who also posts in the same comments section under another name. He’s too Stupid to realize that he’s cutting and pasting the exact same words under both of his fake names, and also believes that the Mormon military guy from Utah is solely to blame for Benhazi)

America cares about:

How quickly they get their food in drive-thru, and if the order is right, and they got straws and napkins in the sack.

If Kim Kardashian and Kanye have really split up already.

If their kids school program will be hard to find a parking spot and a seat at if they don’t get there until 5 minutes before it starts.

If the price of a gallon of gas jumps 25 cents in one jump.

If they will have the money to take a vacation this Summer.

If Kate Middleton is really having a girl?

If their cable bills will be going up.

And finally if the grandparents will be over in time to watch the kids so they can make it to the movie date with their life partner.

There you go…

The existence of this administration is based on voter ignorance.

They cannot and will not tolerate attempts to enlighten the balance of the population who oppose their thuggery.

To go back to the beginning………. an informed citizenry would not have elected an abject failure as potus.

This administration allowed one of their own, Chris Stevens, to be murdered along with other patriots.

If any of you think this administration gives a damn about you, your life or your family, you are mistaken.

Where are the more than two dozen U.S. personnel who survived the attack but haven’t been seen nor heard from in public since?

They have been treated for post-traumatic stress disorder with medical marijuana, and are feeling very mellow about whatever they remember.

Yet, when CBS News asked for White House photos from the night of the attacks, surveillance video that was promised last November, and answers to outstanding questions, a White House official told us that there would be no further comment.

White House photos from the night of the attacks? They probably resemble some old 2008 Hillary ads–phone rings at 3 AM 10 PM, nobody home. Gotta run to Vegas!

If a Republican had been President during the Benghazi attacks, those survivors would have had more media coverage than Cindy Sheehan and Valerie Plame combined.

Kerry visited one survivor in a hospital, nearly 6 months after the event? Still in the hospital? Hmm.

Midas on March 12, 2013 at 1:57 PM

There’s more than one still recovering.

Reps. Frank Wolf, R-Va., and Jim Gerlach, R-Pa., claim sources have told them up to 30 were injured, and up to seven may still be at Walter Reed. “Several may have required amputations,” they wrote in a letter to colleagues last week.
A source close to the survivors, though, told Fox News that seven were injured – not 30 – and that at least three are still at Walter Reed. Another may be recovering in California. The source said one of the injured underwent a partial leg amputation. Another is suffering from smoke inhalation and possible brain injury.
Fox News has been told that some of the survivors work in clandestine services and do not want their names made public, though they do wonder why nobody from key committees has called them in for closed hearings to testify on what transpired that night.
Chaffetz claimed Wednesday that the administration “will not give us the names.”
He said one person who went to the hospital even had their “name changed” on hospital records so as not to be identified.
The State Department has declined to say how many survivors were injured or hospitalized.

EXACTLY RIGHT. Benghazi was NOT branded (via the Big Lie) a “consulate” until AFTER the events of 9/11.

It’s all about gun-running; the Middle East analog to Obama’s Mexican Fast & Furious …

ShainS on March 12, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Some watchdog groups, members of the media and Republican members of Congress are asking: Where are the more than two dozen U.S. personnel who survived the attack but haven’t been seen nor heard from in public since?

Since many of them were probably involved in running guns and rockets to Al Quaeda Syrian terrorists (and assorted other anti-Western, anti-civilization islamists), I would guess that they are probably in Jordan, right now, training Al Quaeda terrorists.

Giving aid and comfort to the enemy … From the top of this criminal, treasonous administration all the way down.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on March 12, 2013 at 2:21 PM

Security was pulled out of Benghazi ahead of time, and added security was denied, despite earlier attacks and warnings. When the attack began, nothing was done, except by the former Seals, who had to disobey orders to stand down in order to go and help, and with that help, they got the survivors out. Many or all would have likley been killed without that help.

Tin foil hat time: What if there were not supposed to be any survivors? It has always smelled like a set-up to me.

Six months later, where are Benghazi’s survivors?

It’s like there were only 4 people at the embassy, who were all killed.

I’m imagining a scene like that official in the 9th ward of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, who was sobbing about how no one came and people died there. Which was later found to be bogus. But it makes a good anti-Bush Democratic soundbite.

How about a good “Obama just let them die” soundbite. Or “Hillary Clinton just let them die”.

There are these who lived through the ambush.

There are those who did not live through the ambush.

sadsushi on March 12, 2013 at 4:12 PM

At some point you have to ask the question… Are they being held against their will?

Yeah, so they are locked in a room somewhere.. or on a floor or building somewhere safe away from the press and Republicans. But the point is… they are locked away. Somewhere.
Sure.. some of these survivors would most likely be Obama supporters. But all of them? Might there not be a few who would like to speak to someone other than an agent of Obama.

When you are locked away for your “protection” at some point it just turns into being locked away.

Imagine you are one of these people. Maybe seriously injured. Nobody knows who you are. You have information about that night and the days before that.. if you were to make it public it could be damaging to the President. And there you are… locked away. Getting shots or taking medicine from government doctors watched over by agents of Obama. All of them hoping you get better, I am sure.

We need to keep after our legislators until they compel the Obama administration to reveal all about Benghazi.

On a less-tragic note, I’m still wondering when Team Obama will let the American people know who was on board Air Force One when it flew low and slow over Manhattan several years ago. Who was on board, and why did taxpayers have to foot the bill (if we didn’t pay for it, the administration would have made sure that we knew it)?

In all such issues, I think they figure that if they just brass it out, we will forget and move on. They seem to get away with that.
