FL lawmaker: People wanting to purchase ammo should probably take anger management classes first

posted at 2:01 pm on March 9, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

I threw this story up in the Green Room during the week, but here’s some video with a few more details about the Florida state legislator proposing that law-abiding citizens seeking to purchase ammunition for their firearms should have to take an anger management program first. I repeat, we’re not even talking about a gun safety program — we’re talking about an anger management program. The mind reels:

Two hours and twenty dollars every ten years may sound like a relatively innocuous imposition on upstanding citizens’ lives (although, don’t forget the significant added costs of the extra bureaucracy and enforcement the law would need to have any teeth), especially if it ostensibly means we can “save even just one life.”  There are a billion and one other things in this world we could try and pass laws around that would also “save just one life,” but don’t — it’s far too slippery of a slope that comes with way too many costs and unintended consequences.

Even if the ostensible idea behind the proposal is really just to “get people to be more introspective,” doesn’t it feel an awful lot like a suggestion that gun owners are just more inclined to fits of violent outrage and are probably in need of counseling? And even if a state-run anger management course could get most people to “be more introspective” for a hot second (which I wildly doubt, and sounds mighty unconstitutional anyway), would doing so actually  accomplish any kind of effective deterrence on this supposed plague of gun violence? Also wildly doubtful.

It doesn’t look like the proposal is destined to go anywhere, thank goodness, but Florida gun-rights advocates were rightly in an uproar this week.

“When I first saw it, I thought it had to be a joke,” said Sean Caranna, executive director of Florida Carry, a nonprofit group championing the right to bear arms. … “We’ve got a lot of issues that should be the focus of these bill slots with limited filing, but instead we put in something as ridiculous as this,” he said. “I don’t see a planet where this passes. This is an attempt to grab attention – it has to be. And that’s really disappointing.”

Jon Gutmacher, an Orlando attorney and author of “Florida Firearms: Law, Use & Ownership,” told FoxNews.com that the bill would almost certainly be found to be unconstitutional based on prior restraint.

“It has no reasonable relationship to anything,” he said. “There has to be a reasonable basis to believe that a person had a substantial anger problem that could cause public harm. … That’s the kind of bill that doesn’t even get past committee.”

It’s not hyperbole to state that liberalism is a mental disease.

Boy! It sounds as if lawmakers in various states are trying to out-do themselves as who can come up with the dumbest law?

I must say that some states are actually passing laws that should go to the SC on gun/ammo laws?

Well, sure if they aren’t willing to be re-educated other measures would have to be taken but it would be for their own good, and the overall good of an advancing society.

Doctors’ kitchen knives ban call

A&E doctors are calling for a ban on long pointed kitchen knives to reduce deaths from stabbing.

A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase – and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.

They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.

The research is published in the British Medical Journal.

The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.

And a car packs much more destructive energy than any twenty guns – 2500 lbs of metal propelled along at over 60 mph right near defenseless pedestrians, exposed motorcycle riders, and the like. Someone intent on doing damage can inflict lots more with a car than a gun and then the car serves as a getaway vehicle, too.

That said, there’s little doubt that the left wants to force psychological exams and profiles for everyone for everything. They would be very happy to force you and me to take daily psychological tests just to have “the right” to walk in public (which they would invariably deny either of us). The leftists only have one aim in mind and that is to strangle all of civil society so that no one can do anything without first getting their permission, paying some licensing fee, having to subject themselves to their asinine and insane tests by wholly unqualified pseudo-scientists … until society is finally strangled out of existence and the Earth is returned to the green slime of billions of years ago … natural. Professional courtesy for leftists.

There was a truly insane, leftist car commercial a little while back that used to end with a catchphrase along the lines of, “The best impact to have on the environment is no impact, at all.” Wow! That flies quite in the face of the whole notion that Man adapts his environment to his needs which is what raised us out of the slime.

I think it is fair to say liberals lack critical reasoning skills, promote sociopathic values* and exhibit a level of denial of facts routinely associated with chemical addictions.

Liberals are, and I think I can speak for most conservatives, very scary people who may snap at any time.

It is past time to create a national database of liberals containing all pertinent information (i.e. name, age, address, photo, etc) gleened from voter rolls and social media. This would allow anyone to easily determine the level of risk they may be facing in their day to day interactions. Even if it only saves the life of ONE child (born or unborn) , it will be well worth the time and expense of setting it up.

Additionally, of benefit to the liberals, this would allow anyone with an internet connection (including those people they see as unjustly incarcerated for drug law violations) to instantly identify the “gun free” homes in their neighborhood so they can rest assured their liberal children are not being exposed to the “gun culture”.

Having demonstrated so clearly the bipartisan appeal of this proposal, I am confident we can count on the full support of the Democratic members of the House and Senate to turn into law without any amendments.
.
.
* Sociopath – A person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior; and a lack of conscience. Liberals are addicted to shows like “The Sopranos”, “Sons of Anarchy” and “Dexter” – All of which celebrate sociopathic values. The liberals even have the communication monopoly of the MSM keeping them in the limelight and pimping their behavior.

Those who don’t buy guns and ammo should take civic responsibility classes every time they open their mouths to advocate gun control. The course would cover the Constitution with emphasis on the Bill of Rights, philosophical issues such as not disturbing the peace and tranquility of society by incessantly haranguing the public with their nanny-state epiphanies, and concepts such as not burdening society with the cost of their own irresponsible conduct in disregarding their obligation to provide for their own self-defense, and thus unduly endangering the lives and safety of not only law enforcement officers but also the public in general.

Dusty on March 9, 2013 at 3:24 PM

Has anyone thought this idea of anger management classes could be used as a reason to disqualify someone from future gun purchases? Surely a person would have to be registered for the class, and that detail could always work its way into a background check without noting attendance was to purchase ammo under the law. For some liberals, such a class would be a definite sign of mental instability.

Other than the obvious factors (i.e., progressives wanting to know who owns guns, wanting to keep them from having ammunition for same, etc.), there is also probably a purely pecuniary dimension here. (“Pecuniary” meaning “having to do with money”.)

“Anger management” was one of the buzzwords of corporate America a decade ago, with everybody except management types being “encouraged” to attend classes, the idea being to “create a less hostile workplace”. It lost popularity in the late ‘noughts because people realized that it mainly consisted of the “guru” telling everybody either

(a) Your anger at somebody else is because you are really angry at yourself (not because said “somebody else” is an incompetent boob at about the level of Dilbert’s pointy-haired idiot of a boss), and/or

(b) To pass the class, you must unquestioningly agree with all the guru’s ideas (said guru being most often a refugee from and ashram on Big Sur in the Seventies, or the DNC).

Private enterprise works in ways that government types cannot comprehend. One big difference between the two is that in the private sector, if something is shown to be a waste of time and money, it gets jettisoned a tout suite’. In government, the more useless and navel-gazing something is, the more sacred it is, rather like academia.

As such, I strongly suspect that at least one motivation for this bit of idiocy is to generate “market” for a lot of anger-management “gurus” who are no longer able to suck at the corporate teat, because they are now seen as the useless dead weight they really are.

If this law passes, I can virtually guarantee you that the classes won’t cost only $20 once they get rolling; more like $200 an hour for a minimum of five hours. Pricing them high being not only remunerative, but another way to prevent people from exercising their Second Amendment rights, by making it too expensive for anyone but a millionaire to do so. And of course, millionaires hire armed bodyguards, which progressives approve of on the Number One Principle:

“I am sick to the teeth of every two-bit chiseler calling himself Number One when he’s stolen enough small change to hire a couple of goons to strut around behind him packing blasters.”

-Lensman Kimball Kinnison as Cartiff the fence, in Second Stage Lensman by E.E. “Doc” Smith.)

And oh yes, keep in mind that these “anger management” gurus are almost certainly trendily progressive, probably have a union, and are virtually guaranteed to vote straight “D” ballots in every election. As the old saying goes, one hand washes the other.

/just a thought.

Do you get extra points for shooting the instructor?

Somehow I still have images of Elmer Fudd passing out tests to Tweety Bird, the Tasmanian Devil and Bugs Bunny. Ooooo, hoo, hoo, hoo.

Or Wile E. Coyote to Road Runner. No anger there.

flicker on March 9, 2013 at 5:10 PM

This makes me very, very angry!

KS Rex on March 9, 2013 at 5:12 PM

I wouldn’t do it, but all this regulation and psychological testing makes me think it’s easier just to break the law.

flicker on March 9, 2013 at 5:16 PM

Politicians who presume to interest themselves in my personal buying habits are not fit for office. The fact that these cowardly meddlers even think of such things should be grounds for a mandatory class on the history and importance of the U.S. Constitution.

Pass or lose your job, whiner.

ROCnPhilly on March 9, 2013 at 5:21 PM

I failed my anger management class because I said I’d never been angry.
Then I failed my anger management class because I said I had been angry.
When I complained to the instructor he went Postal on me.

What do you wanna bet civil servants will be exempt?

flicker on March 9, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Let me get this straight. Liberals fight hard to prevent any modest counseling requirement prior to a woman having an abortion. A proceedure that will terminate a human life. But want me to take anger management classes before I buy some cartridges?

It’s not hyperbole to state that liberalism is a mental disease.

Funny you should say that. The latest psychology manuals used in the psych professions no longer consider homosexuality deviant, but a new addition is that anger is now considered a pathology. Thats why so much talk about “angry white men”. See how it all fits together?

How can these oneworldprogs’ ideas be so great if they have to be so sneaky and do so much lying to get them accomplished?

ROCnPhilly on March 9, 2013 at 5:34 PM

Your govt is not your friend. They are parasites. And getting bolder.

No female should be able to possess a firearm and/or ammunition for same, because she is subject to menstruation.

Further proof that the 19th Amendment needs to be repealed.

Twana on March 9, 2013 at 6:25 PM

People wanting to run for office should probably have to had run a business or at least work in the private sector for 10 years, raise children, not be divorced, pay their taxes and been in the military. Then they should be schooled in the constitution and be forced to tour the death camps of Nazi Germany as well as the Holocaust museum.

Once that is completed, if they should sign a legally binding contract that if they are ever caught lying to the public, it is a felony. They immediately are removed from office and all monies they make or have made, including retirement, is returned back the the people. Then they either go to prison or wash public toilets the rest of their lives.

Considering some of her constituency, this probably did seem like a good idea. They might buy ammo legally.

What if you told them that the thing that reeeeallly horks you off is 2″ diameter black dots surrounded by concentric black rings all printed on a piece of paper posted a number of yards away.

You just want to blast holes in those stupid things every time you see them.

There are a billion and one other things in this world we could try and pass laws around that would also “save just one life,” but don’t — it’s far too slippery of a slope that comes with way too many costs and unintended consequences.

I second (or third or fourth) most of the above comments (some of which would certainly save more lives in the aggregate than the proposal at issue).
Just a few additions –
Note that the costs serve two purposes (which are certainly not unintended):
(1) makes it more difficult for individuals to purchase ammunition, therefore more difficult to retain competence because range time is reduced, therefore higher chances of having shots go astray during an exchange with a villain, therefore leading to “we told you those gun nuts were too dangerous!!”;
(2) increases in bureaucracy and number of government employees, therefore higher base-line budgeting, therefore more things that can’t be cut even when the entire economy is about to implode.

AesopFan on March 9, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Some people who are against keeping guns for safety ought to move their family to Detroit or Chicago. They have very strict gun laws…..enough to warm the hearts of those that make stupefied comments such as are included in this headline.

Tasha on March 9, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Well, as long as we are into making people jump through hoops and pay money to obtain their rights under the Constitution, why don’t we bring back literacy tests and poll taxes while we are at it?
