The War on Bacon: Special Edition on Colorado gun legislation

posted at 6:17 pm on March 8, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

There are a bunch of gun laws up for a vote in the Colorado senate today, so Kelly Maher and I thought we’d team up again, so she can give us a briefing on what’s going down.

We’ll try to start the show at 6:30 p.m. Same friendly faces, same low production values. Tune in to find out if the Wild West is giving up its guns. See you there! We won’t have our traditional chatroll box, but chime in below.

Very interesting and enlightening in regards to how little legislatures actually educate themselves in the process of writing laws they expect to be enforceable.

RE: There are a bunch of gun laws…

Bunch is a SINGULAR, not plural.

Proper use: There IS a bunch of laws…

http://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2012/06/collective-nouns-2.html

Contrary to what many people believe, collective nouns aren’t automatically accompanied by singular verbs in American English.

It’s true that a collective noun is singular in form: “group,” “bunch,” “team,” “band,” and so on.

But it sometimes conveys a plural idea, and refers to the separate individuals who make up the group, not the group itself.

When that’s the case, the collective noun is what linguists call a “notional plural” (that is, it’s plural in meaning), so it’s accompanied by a plural verb.

I thought bunch was plural. Bunch means more than one. What if she wrote “There are bunches of gun laws….”
I think it’s either or.

The Language Log:
There’s a bunch of reasons — or are there?

Modern standard usage is heavily in favor of “there are” with noun phrases like “a bunch of” and “a number of”, as mrs_cake observes and we confirm below. But there are a bunch of interesting reasons why mrs_cake might be puzzled about this. It’s at the intersection of uncertainty about what verb forms to use with subjects like “a of Xs”, and uncertainty about the developing indeclinability of “there’s”. So nobody better hit her, OK? Her preferred usage is the standard one, and at the same time, her ambivalence about it is well founded and rational.

Already happening. Just like roaches, rodents, or other vermin who have fouled their nest and take up new quarters not realizing that the things they did in the old place caused the decay that they left. States should prohibit immigrants from California from voting in local elections for at least 5 years or until they can pass a civics exam.

Colorado has been well and truly Californicated. The biggest problem is that they’ve all moved to the mountain resort areas and populate the entire front range. It was interesting to hear that the Outdoor channel would pull all of its production from the state. It makes me wonder what would happen if all of the hunters and fishermen from out of state boycott Colorado. If all of the instate hunters boycotted, it would be a huge economic blow to Colorado.

Technically correct. I’m a stickler for language too, and I respect your POV, but I have to say, “there IS a bunch of laws” just sounds wrong.

As a speech writer, I learned not to be a sticker when it sounds wrong to most people in your audience.

This grammar kerfuffle reminds me of an episode of ‘The Little Rascals’ where a teacher (of approximately 3rd grade, mind you) verbally posits the equation “PI-R-Squared”. Little Buckwheat brilliantly protests, “Pie are round. Cornbread are squared.”

Teehee!
