libfreeordie on March 7, 2013 at 7:43 PM

Someone seems to have missed her economics classes.

If gas prices are strictly determined by U.S. contributions to supply and demand

Oil is fungible, yes, but not quite *that* fungible: thanks to oversupply in the US, Henry Hub prices have broken away from Brent prices enough to set up a significant discrepancy between the two (where Henry Hub is at least $10/bbl less, over the past few years). More supply in the US will continue this difference, not erase it.

shouldn’t our expanded oil production have put a dent into what we pay at the pump

Not necessarily, thanks to EPA restrictions on regional "blends" from the refineries. Because of these restrictions, refineries cannot easily manage differences in demand from one region to another. Therefore higher demand in California (as an example) where there are fewer refineries handling that demand results in higher gas prices because other refineries cannot easily switch to the "blend" that EPA requires for the California region. And this doesn't even get into the issue of different state and local taxes applied to the price at the pump.

Is the argument from conservatives really that if only we used federal land then suddenly OPEC would lower prices?

Again, not necessarily. But even if prices do not go down significantly, employment and royalties go up, all those dollars go to Federal, state, and local coffers (instead of jobs and royalties going to places like Mexico, Nigeria, and OPEC countries, for example) and we benefit. Increased production will then continue the disparity between Henry Hub and Brent, which will translate into lower gas prices in the US as well.

<strike>Erika </strike>libfreeordie, as usual, misses the point.
...
The magical thinking is strong with this one.

Corrected it for you :)

Doesn't matter. What matters most is the Left's ability to self-congratulate and pat themselves on the back (they're stopping Global Warming!!). We're dealing with people that are emotionally-challenged. That's what it boils down to, I'm afraid.

We go back to Hopeys Glorious 2009 Prague Speechy!

Now, to protect our planet, now is the time to change the way that we use energy.

(Applause.) Together, we must confront climate change by ending the world's dependence on fossil fuels,

by tapping the power of new sources of energy like the wind and sun,

and calling upon all nations to do their part.

And I pledge to you that in this global effort, the United States is now ready to lead. (Applause.)

Wait a stink`n tic,we go back to the Hopey/Changey 2009 Prague Speechy!

Text of President Obama's speech in Prague
April 05, 2009
**************

Now, to protect our planet,

now is the time to change the way that we use energy.

Together, we must confront climate change by ending the world's dependence on fossil fuels,

by tapping the power of new sources of energy like the wind and sun,
and calling upon all nations to do their part.

And I pledge to you that in this global effort, the United States is now ready to lead.

New Mexico, which share the Permian Basin oilfield with Texas, but has most of it's land overseen by the federal Bureau of Land Management, had 77 active rigs as of March 1, according to the Baker Hughes rig count. In March of 2008, when George W. Bush was president and oil prices were in the same range they are today but frack drilling operations were just gearing up, New Mexico had 71 operating rigs.

So, five years. Net gain -- six rigs. About an 8 percent increase.

Move across the state line into Texas' District 8 -- where the land is mostly private or owned by the state -- and the rig count for the first week of March, 2008 was 129 rigs. The current number? Two-hundred-eight-six rigs. Which is roughly a 120 percent jump in the rig count.

Same area. Same geological formations underground, but one place has more than doubled drilling activity while in the other, drilling is virtually unchanged from five years ago.

Yes, defendable is a word and is a synonym for the usual defensible and it is more appropriate to connote a contest or argument as in a PhD or Master's thesis questioning.

Now the fact that I leave words out or do other idiotic things is compensated by my thinking of nuances like this.
