Sperling: Yeah, I guess Obama fibbed during the presidential debate on the sequester

posted at 1:21 pm on March 4, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

You know who’s not having much fun in Washington lately? Gene Sperling, Barack Obama’s director of the Council of Economic Advisers and the somewhat-unlikely media hatchet man for the White House.  Last week he got dragged into the spotlight by Bob Woodward, who accused Sperling of trying to threaten him into changing his reporting on the parentage of the sequester.  Yesterday, Sperling got grilled by NBC’s David Gregory on Meet the Press, who did a good job of dragging the truth out of Sperling on the point.

Fair’s fair; I dinged Gregory for wasting time on John Boehner’s “ass” remark, but he didn’t back down after that strange analogy offered by Sperling on the budget fight.  Somehow, Sperling puts Republicans in the role of robber for wanting to reduce the vastly-increased level of government spending under Obama and the Democrats in Congress.  Obama, who wanted to take more money from taxpayers, somehow becomes the victim of a robbery in Sperling’s example.

This is a good lesson in how this administration, Democrats, and the public sector think about the money we all earn.  It’s really theirs, and anyone who gets in the way of their confiscation of it is a thief.

Maybe the White House should consider giving Sperling a lower profile from now on.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/morning-examiner-obamas-campaign-of-pain/article/2523155

For perhaps the first time in the history of the United States, it is in the political interest of a president to inflict maximum pain on the American people. Obama could have spent the last 16 months preparing to mitigate sequestration’s impact on the American people, as any responsible manager would have. Instead, he has done the opposite, explicitly ordering government agencies not to prepare for the worst. And he has refused all Republican efforts to pass legislation that would minimize the sequester’s pain.

That’s because there was a whole series of lies last week.

Obama lied but so too did Arne Duncan, Ray TheHood, and Janet Nepolitano. They were all predicting dire consequences from Sequestration (which Obama not only created but said wasn’t going to happen). And now they’ve designed sequestration to be as painful as possible for the greatest number of people. They are intentionally making these decisions about furloughs and reduced services. Hence the TSA groper and not the EPA investigator is working less hours.

Why does he want it? I hardly believe it’s the reason he gives below, which is that it’ll create the environment necessary to finally resolve the spending cuts vs higher taxes battle. Is it a trigger for something? And this explains why he never worked on a deal to avoid it. He wanted it. And as you’ll see below, and this is way back in October, he’s already comfortable with it taking up to 6 months, ie until the end of June of this year, to solve .

Excerpted from Breitbart: In an off-the-record interview with the editors of the Des Moines Register, President Obama reversed course, taking credit for a sequester that he anticipates will be “in place.”:

OBAMA: “So when you combine the Bush tax cuts expiring, the sequester in place, the commitment of both myself and my opponent — at least Governor Romney claims that he wants to reduce the deficit — but we’re going to be in a position where I believe in the first six months we are going to solve that big piece of business.” [emphasis added]

I don’t really know that you can claim that much logical consistency for Obama. I think he’ll brag about his role in the sequester when he wants to claim he’s a responsible spender looking for budget cuts, and deflect when he wants to shift the blame to the Republicans.

Of course, the way to play the game with him is to flip it around. When he blames the Republicans, quote him bragging about the sequester. When he talks about spending cuts, highlight him blaming the Republicans for forcing any kind of spending cuts at all.

can_con, I may not have picked the best link, but look around a bit for some others that may be better. The phrase originated, as best as I can tell, from Van Jones. Glenn Beck picked up on it and discussed it on his show years ago.

I think the 30,000 foot summary is that the Progressives in D.C. can’t accomplish everything they want to accomplish “top down”, and they are calling for progressives in society to rise up “bottom up”, but that won’t happen until they inspire a rebellion from the “inside out”.

So when Obama talks of growing the economy “from the middle out”, I think it’s more of code-speak regarding:
1) Tax the top more
2) Give more of that money to the Democratic faithful.
