Quotes of the day

posted at 10:41 pm on March 4, 2013 by Allahpundit

The first months of President Obama’s second term are being built around a simple premise: No caving.

From the sequester to immigration reform to the broader debate about the role of government in American life, Obama is in an ultra-assertive mood, practically daring Republicans to defy his wishes…

These days, however, GOP figures are deriding Obama’s approach as that of a “roadshow president,” as House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) recently called him.

Conservatives accuse Obama of being happier making airy claims and promises at campaign-style events than engaging in the nitty-gritty of governance. In particular, they suggest that his purported willingness to compromise to avert the sequester was vague at best and bogus at worst.

***

As the nation’s top Democrat, President Obama has a clear imperative: to ratchet up pressure on Republicans for across-the-board spending cuts by using the power of his office to dramatize the impact on families, businesses and the military.

But as president, Mr. Obama is charged with minimizing the damage from the spending reductions and must steer clear of talking down the economy. A sustained campaign against the cuts by the president could become what one former aide called “a self-fulfilling kind of mess.”

If severe economic pain ultimately fails to materialize, Mr. Obama could be blamed for hyping the situation, much like his cabinet secretaries were in recent weeks.

***

Do we have a president or a perpetual candidate? It’s not an entirely unfair question.

Even as Barack Obama was warning of the dreadful consequences of the budget sequester looming on March 1, he spent days away from Washington, apparently out of touch with Democratic as well as Republican congressional leaders…

It appears that Obama prefers delivering such messages to crowds of adoring supporters over actually governing.

His theory seemed to be that if he kicked his job approval rating up a few points, Republicans would agree to the revenue increases he is promoting, just as they agreed to a tax-rate increase in the “fiscal cliff” showdown.

***

Democrats get to do the P.C. Shimmy. Traditional presidents go through a normal set of motions: They identify a problem. They come up with a proposal to address the problem. They try to convince the country that their proposal is the best approach.

Under the Permanent Campaign Shimmy, the president identifies a problem. Then he declines to come up with a proposal to address the problem. Then he comes up with a vague-but-politically-convenient concept that doesn’t address the problem (let’s raise taxes on the rich). Then he goes around the country blasting the opposition for not having as politically popular a concept. Then he returns to Washington and congratulates himself for being the only serious and substantive person in town.

***

Mini-maxing is when a player designs a [video-game] character that is fantastically good at one thing, at the expense of everything else. So you could end up with a character who is, say, obscenely good at hitting things with a sword – but can’t convince a bunch of sailors to drink free beer. The mini-maxer doesn’t mind; he’ll just go around the game trying to resolve as many problems as he can by hitting them with a sword (tabletop gamers – err, “D&D players” – often call this The Gun is My Skill List, although obviously substitute a sword for a gun in the name). The problems that the mini-maxer can’t resolve that way he’ll either ignore until later, or else flail about on the screen while hitting the buttons quickly and/or at random (“button-mashing”), in the hopes that eventually the laws of probability will allow him to bull on through anyway.

And that’s where we are now. Barack Obama knows how to do one thing: elect Barack Obama to public office. And that’s not ‘elect Democrats.’ Or ‘elect liberals.’ Or even ‘elect people that Barack Obama likes.’ It’s just him: his team is trying pretty hard right now to figure out how to use their over-specialized skill more generally, but they don’t have much time to figure it out and the system is actually rigged against them in this case. Barack Obama certainly doesn’t know how to govern effectively; take away a Congress that will rubber-stamp the Democratic agenda and he flails about. He’s so bad at this, in fact, that when confronted with a situation where all he had to do was do nothing to fulfill a campaign promise (the tax cuts) we somehow ended up with a situation where Obama gave in on 98% of those tax cuts and voluntarily signed up to take the blame for the AMT fix. In short: Obama was woefully unprepared for the Presidency, and he hasn’t really spent the last four years trying to catch up. Instead, he goes from situation to situation either trying to recast the problem in ways that he does have some skill in (permanent campaigning for office), or else… flail about on the scene while hitting people’s buttons quickly and/or at random, in the hopes that eventually the laws of probability will allow him to bull on through anyway.

The “Roadshow” president. What a perfect description! He is the snake oil salesman of the century, that’s for sure.

Well McCarthy can kiss my ass. He is a weasel his own self. He comes back here and talks tough and when in DC it’s “yes master.” I listened to him gripe about all the bad pork in the big storm Sandy bill and two hours later he votes yes.

For where the instrument of intelligence is added to brute power and evil will, mankind is powerless in its own defense.

Dante Alighieri

Barky fails miserably in the first category. Sadly, given enough brute power and evil will intelligence isn’t necessary to carry out destruction, as destroying things is easy. Even just refusing to do any maintenance is enough to take down most systems or machines, let alone using the power to push them to failure. Dante wasn’t considering someone who just wants to destroy everything.

This is why the GOP’s cowardly caving to Barky (including Mittens’ pathetic 2012 run) and the courts’ refusal to stop his tens of violations of our Constitution and any sense of the limits of the Executive branch is so dangerous and infuriating.

And excellent quotes they were. But they also showed that people never even contemplated the idea that a person would want to take over a nation/people just to destroy it. Barky is truly unique in history, this way.

While there have been peoples who have come under the rule of those who hated them there has never been a people who have elected a person who hated them and wanted to destroy them and everything about them. And even the various kings and emperors who hated the people still wanted to grow the nation in order to increase their own power.

But Barky wants none of this. He just wants to exact some demented, delusional third-world revenge fantasy on the West because he’s such a retarded loser with no abilities, no brain, and no talent, at all … other than his skin.

The Democrats (includes Reich) are comprised of nuts today. Communist Nuts. Whatever strikes home as to criticism from the Right about Obama and the other Dems, the Dems (count on this) will retaliate and start pumping public talk with the same about the Right, trying to pre-empt the use and target of the criticism.

If you say, accurately, that Obama (and Reich, the rest) are engaged in treason for challenging if not ignoring and/or violating the Constitution, they know they’re guilty so they start accusing the Right (TP) of that.

It’s the tiresome madness of the Left, it’s Communist mind-fracking. Reich is certainly adept at that, as is Emanuel, Axelrod, Obama, the whole lot of them.

Indonesia of the 1960s. Check out The Year Of Living Dangerously – the story of Barky’s childhood and what he grew up in. Clearly, his mother was a Sukarno lover and was devastated by the coup overthrowing him. I’m sure she impressed this on Barky every waking moment while he grew up, meanwhile he got to see Suharto and how a strongman runs a sh!thole backward country. Barky’s original political aspiration, of course, was to be “Prime Minister” of Indonesia – which is certainly a first for anyone who has ever occupied our Oval Office.

Doesn’t hurt to chit chat about what we feel and see happening hon, doesn’t mean we will give up, it’s good to vent…

There is so much frustration at what we all see and know is going on.

Coburn is gonna get an earful from me tomorrow, politely I might add.

They all hear from me when I see them do or say stupid stuff as I am sure hundreds of thousands of other Okies do.

Then again tho, do they just sit back and say, ‘do they really believe that’?

Nought stranger than folk

Yup, that’s one of the major reasons I call them “Self-anointed Political Aristocrats”….

When I was asking about Cuba and Venezuela, it was meant to be in line with all these poor people admiring Obama while he ruins the country, not that we are a third world nation.

Yep, it’s all now just a power struggle for them…

Who’s gonna rise to the top and continue the downfall…

There should NEVER have been allowed career politicians!

A 2 or 4 year maximum! And out they go…

No more coming up for re-election year after year and decade after decade…

ROTFLMAO… Oh I’m still listening, remember, I used to be a Rock Star, I sadly must admit to being used to listening to other Rock Stars who were morons studying to be imbeciles and failing miserably. I have built up either a tolerance, or an ability to just tune then out.

That my dear Scrumpydoodles is what the controversy that ed to the dual between Alexander Hamilton and Arron Burr was. Arron Burr was a Professional Career Politicians, and Hamilton believed that Professional Career Politicians should never be allowed to become involved in the American Government. Unfortunately for America when Burr “won” that dual, so did the Professional Class.

Barack Obama knows how to do one thing: elect Barack Obama to public office.

Check out the blog at the link in this excerpt. Maybe the GOP has some chance of connecting with the younger generation not-politically-minded voters (gamers include a lot of old geezers these days).

Midnight trivia, FWIW: the site-owner, Moe Lane, builds alternate worlds for Steve Jackson’s GURPS (if you don’t know, it won’t do any good to explain). Jackson was president of his university’s Young Republicans org in the early seventies. Don’t know what his politics are now, but he’s based in Austin, which is always chancy.

I only remember one phrase from my college Italian class:
“Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate”, or “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”

It always sounded so menacing, when spoken, and seemed appropriate to so many classes.
