Quotes of the day

posted at 10:41 pm on March 4, 2013 by Allahpundit

The first months of President Obama’s second term are being built around a simple premise: No caving.

From the sequester to immigration reform to the broader debate about the role of government in American life, Obama is in an ultra-assertive mood, practically daring Republicans to defy his wishes…

These days, however, GOP figures are deriding Obama’s approach as that of a “roadshow president,” as House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) recently called him.

Conservatives accuse Obama of being happier making airy claims and promises at campaign-style events than engaging in the nitty-gritty of governance. In particular, they suggest that his purported willingness to compromise to avert the sequester was vague at best and bogus at worst.

***

As the nation’s top Democrat, President Obama has a clear imperative: to ratchet up pressure on Republicans for across-the-board spending cuts by using the power of his office to dramatize the impact on families, businesses and the military.

But as president, Mr. Obama is charged with minimizing the damage from the spending reductions and must steer clear of talking down the economy. A sustained campaign against the cuts by the president could become what one former aide called “a self-fulfilling kind of mess.”

If severe economic pain ultimately fails to materialize, Mr. Obama could be blamed for hyping the situation, much like his cabinet secretaries were in recent weeks.

***

Do we have a president or a perpetual candidate? It’s not an entirely unfair question.

Even as Barack Obama was warning of the dreadful consequences of the budget sequester looming on March 1, he spent days away from Washington, apparently out of touch with Democratic as well as Republican congressional leaders…

It appears that Obama prefers delivering such messages to crowds of adoring supporters over actually governing.

His theory seemed to be that if he kicked his job approval rating up a few points, Republicans would agree to the revenue increases he is promoting, just as they agreed to a tax-rate increase in the “fiscal cliff” showdown.

***

Democrats get to do the P.C. Shimmy. Traditional presidents go through a normal set of motions: They identify a problem. They come up with a proposal to address the problem. They try to convince the country that their proposal is the best approach.

Under the Permanent Campaign Shimmy, the president identifies a problem. Then he declines to come up with a proposal to address the problem. Then he comes up with a vague-but-politically-convenient concept that doesn’t address the problem (let’s raise taxes on the rich). Then he goes around the country blasting the opposition for not having as politically popular a concept. Then he returns to Washington and congratulates himself for being the only serious and substantive person in town.

Mini-maxing is when a player designs a [video-game] character that is fantastically good at one thing, at the expense of everything else. So you could end up with a character who is, say, obscenely good at hitting things with a sword – but can’t convince a bunch of sailors to drink free beer. The mini-maxer doesn’t mind; he’ll just go around the game trying to resolve as many problems as he can by hitting them with a sword (tabletop gamers – err, “D&D players” – often call this The Gun is My Skill List, although obviously substitute a sword for a gun in the name). The problems that the mini-maxer can’t resolve that way he’ll either ignore until later, or else flail about on the screen while hitting the buttons quickly and/or at random (“button-mashing”), in the hopes that eventually the laws of probability will allow him to bull on through anyway.

And that’s where we are now. Barack Obama knows how to do one thing: elect Barack Obama to public office. And that’s not ‘elect Democrats.’ Or ‘elect liberals.’ Or even ‘elect people that Barack Obama likes.’ It’s just him: his team is trying pretty hard right now to figure out how to use their over-specialized skill more generally, but they don’t have much time to figure it out and the system is actually rigged against them in this case. Barack Obama certainly doesn’t know how to govern effectively; take away a Congress that will rubber-stamp the Democratic agenda and he flails about. He’s so bad at this, in fact, that when confronted with a situation where all he had to do was do nothing to fulfill a campaign promise (the tax cuts) we somehow ended up with a situation where Obama gave in on 98% of those tax cuts and voluntarily signed up to take the blame for the AMT fix. In short: Obama was woefully unprepared for the Presidency, and he hasn’t really spent the last four years trying to catch up. Instead, he goes from situation to situation either trying to recast the problem in ways that he does have some skill in (permanent campaigning for office), or else… flail about on the scene while hitting people’s buttons quickly and/or at random, in the hopes that eventually the laws of probability will allow him to bull on through anyway.

His soul should no longer be a mystery

These days, however, GOP figures are deriding Obama’s approach as that of a “roadshow president,” as House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) recently called him.

That label doesn’t even come close to accurately describing the lowlife, America-hating, third-world imbecile who has done nothing but attack America and antagonize Americans since he first slimed into an office he isn’t even eligible for, let alone qualified for with his 84 IQ pea-brain.

The GOP has not the guts or the brains to call Barky the mind-numbingly stupid, treasonous, wimp thug that he actually is. They have still not figured out that Barky has never done anything in good faith in his whole useless, worthless life and that only the biggest idiots in the world would treat him with the respect of a civilized person, as he clearly is not one and is set on nothing but the destruction of civilized society so that he can feel better about his evil, nasty, pathetic self.

Hmmm… I think I may have just stumbled upon a way to fix/save Social Security:

In this 1960 Supreme Court decision Nestor’s denial of benefits was upheld even though he had contributed to the program for 19 years and was already receiving benefits. Under a 1954 law, Social Security benefits were denied to persons deported for, among other things, having been a member of the Communist party. Accordingly, Mr. Nestor’s benefits were terminated. He appealed the termination arguing, among other claims, that promised Social Security benefits were a contract and that Congress could not renege on that contract. In its ruling, the Court rejected this argument and established the principle that entitlement to Social Security benefits is not contractual right.

Deport the Communists. There is apparently a precedent for this. All you lawyer-types will probably find fault with this simplistic solution but for tonight, the problem with an underfunded Social Security system… solved.

Every time I see him coming down the steps of Air Force One, or standing in front of a podium, I wonder how we ever got to this point. I guess the majority of voters really don’t understand what qualifies a person to become a leader of our country. they think all it takes is someone who makes great speeches and has a nice swagger and a high regard for himself and has Hollywood celebrities willing to raise money for him. they don’t care if he ever does any work, they don’t care if the rest of the world dismisses him as an amateur and is ready to take advantage and make our once great country small. It’s pretty sad.

LMFAO!

Resist We Much on March 4, 2013 at 11:34 PM

from the Babbin link:

So we don’t know how many criminal illegal aliens — criminals because they’ve committed serious crimes other than illegally entering the United States — are being set free around the country. According to an Associated Press report, Homeland Security has released over 2,000 of these dangerous illegals since February. Of the 34,000 held by ICE in December, how many more will be turned loose to endanger the American people, because the Obama regime wants to punish us for the sequestration of $85 billion out of the nearly $4 trillion the government will spend this year?

The release of criminal illegal aliens is probably illegal itself. Under our muddled immigration law, Napolitano has the authority to release illegal aliens individually when her department determines that they pose no danger to public safety. But mass releases, such as the one into Pinal County, are beyond her power.

The only answer to this is for Sheriff Babeu — perhaps joined by other concerned law enforcement officers around the country — to sue Napolitano to stop the releases. That lawsuit would reveal who the illegals are, what crimes they’ve committed before, and just who within ICE, the Justice Department, Homeland Security, or possibly the White House ordered the releases.

Congress won’t find the answers to these questions no matter how hard it tries. The House subpoena on “Fast and Furious” was blocked by Obama’s claim of executive privilege when Congress held Attorney General Holder in contempt. The Benghazi investigation is still incomplete, the survivors of the terrorist attack on our diplomatic outpost held — or, more technically, sequestered — out of congressional investigators’ reach.

The only answer is “sue the bastards.” Get a federal judge to issue an injunction against further releases and to compel answers to Babeu’s questions. He, and the rest of the law enforcement community, are entitled to know who was released, what crimes they had committed before, and where these people were when last seen. They have to know these things if they’re going to do their duty to protect their communities.

Obysmal has declared war on the law-abiding citizens of the US, especially the Red States. The sheriff referred to (Babeu) has a territory as large as the state of Connecticut, and Holder’s DoJ has claimed that AZ state law enforcement may not trump federal law.

I knew that the WH had undergone renovations during the Truman administration because its was uninhabitable. In fact, it was because of the fact that he was living in Blair House that Puerto Rican terrorists nearly assassinated him and did kill a police officer or secret service agent. There wasn’t the security that the WH had.

And, of course, Jackie Kennedy really renovated it after Mamie’s kitschy, 1950s decor. She restored it to its historical accuracy.

I did not know that they had completely gutted the structure.

The sheriff referred to (Babeu) has a territory as large as the state of Connecticut, and Holder’s DoJ has claimed that AZ state law enforcement may not trump federal law.

How do we know that Holder+Nappy didn’t provide guns and ammunition , to illegals and jihadys before unleashing them on the American public ?
For all we know, Hussein has called in and placed alqaeda and hamas killers in our neighborhoods to assasinate and terrorize Americans …..

The image blaring so loud
The carelessness of emotions
Directed to the ocean’s tide
Upon the lips of the shore
It violated the property of humanity
As the creature craved for more
Overwhelmed by the desires of calamity
The sea declared it’s war
A fondness overshadows
While a violent breeze blow
The earth was now in the gallows
While a rhythmic gust was shown
Devouring everything for its keep
Rough but gentle the creature enjoyed
The ride he just deployed.

“WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano promised to release more illegal immigrants into the United States, saying the budget sequester has left her no choice.

“We’re going to continue to do that … for the foreseeable future,” Napolitano said at a March 4 breakfast meeting hosted by Politico.”

Reason enough for congress to demand her resignation?

She should be thrown up against the nearest wall and relieved on earthly worries. This tyrant cannot get to Gehenna fast enough.

Was it only in red states these criminals were released?

I heard some were let go in NY…

Scrumpy on March 4, 2013 at 11:39 PM

No, it was not only in red states, but O has a particular animosity towards them, especially those governed by Republicans.

Every time I see him coming down the steps of Air Force One, or standing in front of a podium, I wonder how we ever got to this point.

scalleywag on March 4, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Here’s how we got to this point……75% of Asian voters say “me likee bigger government that offer more services”.

I’ve been posting this line many times on HotAir, because I’m so pissed off that hard working, law abiding Asian immigrants, who raise their kids right, are so naive about the modern day Democrats. This ain’t Bill Clinton’s party anymore, and it certainly ain’t Scoop Jackson’s party. Tell most GOP voters that Obama is purposely trying to destroy the economy and they’ll say “you don’t really believe that do you?”.

It’s like we’re all on an airplane that’s barreling head first towards the ocean, and only a certain percentage of the passengers can sense that the plane is going to crash. The rest of the passengers are on some kind of drug that makes them think that the plane is gliding along smoothly.

I’m wondering if the Asians were lumped into one group. I would imagine that a breakdown of their country of origin would provide a different picture.

When I further try to explain, I am called a nutter!!

Yeah I know, some friend…

I must be a sucker for punishment…

Tho he is now weakening, thinks what 0bama did in regards the sequestration, was insane… there is hope yet!

Many of you, I’m sure, have assumed, I’m sure, that I’m some kind of constitutional scholar based on my posting history. But I’m not actually. Just wanted to clear that up.
