Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on March 3, 2013 by Allahpundit

Faced with a choice of rehashing the stale Bob Woodward drama and the very, very, very stale sequester doomsaying, the Sunday shows decide to kill two birds with one stone: Gene Sperling will appear on NBC and CNN to bash the GOP on sequestration and then field questions about what he meant by “regret” in his e-mail to Woodward. Meanwhile, Woodward himself will be on CBS to try to explain why Obama and his team hate the media that adores them.

Or better yet, skip all that and watch Chris Wallace’s interview with Mitt and Ann Romney. Believe it or not, there is potentially news to be made here. The line-up via National Journal:

Speaker John Boehner will give the House GOP’s perspective on Meet the Press, while Director of the National Economic Council Gene Sperling will represent the White House and answer questions about his now-public spat with the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward. Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, will join the show’s panel.

Sperling also will appear on State of the Union, joined by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Woodward will give his side of his conflict with Sperling on Face the Nation. The show will also feature discussion of the budget battles with Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, will preview the upcoming papal elections.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., Sperling, and Mia Love, the Republican mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, will appear on This Week.

On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace will sit down with Mitt and Ann Romney for their first post-election interview.

So disappointed but not surprised to see all the trashing (by HotAir’s usual jackass, self-described “True Conservative” commenters) of this wonderful man.

Romney running detroit would be a chuckle considering he received 26% of the vote in Wayne County. (which I believe Detroit is located in)

Obama made it into a racial thing. Sorry, but those areas where 100% of the vote went for Obama and most of the voters were Black… pure racist trash. That’s what Obama counts on and fosters.

However, given the politics of the Obysmal cheerleading by the media (even now), Romney would have been undermined from the get-go. I just watched the Romney interview. The most awkward moment was when Wallace asked if Romney’s comments post-campaign (i.e. Obama won by giving gifts away) further contributed to the perception that the party is the party of the rich, whether or not the 47% remark doomed him, and if their wealth had a direct bearing on it. Ann was the one to respond, and gave some kind of “We are what we are” dodge, not addressing the remarks themselves. That’s probably the most politic answer she could give, although I hardly think the most accurate.

Here’s part 2 now, which I’ll semi-live blog. Mitt Romney’s response to rebranding and distancing from himself, he recognizes that he doesn’t have credibility. Alleluia! Romney apparently is upset with continuous gridlock (you wouldn’t have changed that, Mitt, that goes with the territory unless you were to cave). Romney evidently doesn’t like sequestration and Obama going around blaming others. He wants us to fix our problems and become more comeptitive globally, and thinks our chance at national greatness is being squandered by politics.

On the release of the illegals, Mitt said Obama needs to act in the national interest… starts talking about aircraft carriers in the Gulf. Weird. He did at least suggest that we should keep illegals in jail. Mitt’s advocating for transfer authority for agencies when it comes to sequestration.

When it comes to immigration reform, Mitt says that we shouldn’t have a special path to citizenship for people who broke the law but others have different positions and he respects those views. Blah blah blah. Nothing about whether self-deportation was right or wrong.

Mitt denies that the primary made him too conservative, but that attacks ultimately undermined him. Mitt brought up the 10-to-1 spending cut to tax hike deal. Mitt thought it was foolish, but he was willing to go along with it to avoid being called a flip-flopper.

Finally, we’re back to the 47%. Mitt describes it as “very unfortunate” and “not what I meant.” He thinks it’s been twisted and distorted, and that what he said is not what he believes.

On Hurricane Sandy, he gives Chris Christie a pass. Wow! “I lost my election because of my campaign.” Romney says he was ineffective at minority outreach. He thinks Obamacare’s attractiveness they underestimated (not the reason, Mitt!).

To attract more voters, Mitt again says that he lost so he doesn’t have credibility. Among the ideas he does have, attracting minorities is his lead-off.

RickinNH on March 3, 2013 at 9:32 AM

My own view is that there is something else going on that isn’t being talked about and that should be: The Obama Agenda.

Obama’s agenda is not similar to that of the Democratic Party or even, of the American people. It’s strictly and only, to develop a separate power base, separate from the Democratic Party, separate from Congress, separate from the Constitution.

That is, if we take it as a fact that Obama is functionally setting up his own political party, which is called ‘Organizing For Action’ based on his previous campaign structures of ‘Obama for America’… and that this is separate from the Democratic Party. It is funded separately, its loyalties are to Obama and not ‘the Democratic Party’.

And, it is operationally embedded within the populist electronic contact base which he has built up, a network of those dependent on government, a base which he has built up over that past four years – and which functions as his personal propaganda network.Note also that he now has a prime time TV network MSNBC with his people (Axelrod etc) on it.And he is building up a loyalist contact Set of the ultra-Wealthy, who, heh, are ‘doing their fair share’ by giving their wealth not to others but to and only to: Obama. In return for oligarchic political power.

The NYT is concerned and its editorial of today muses that possibly this OAS is just a ‘reasonable’ agenda of promoting The President’s Agenda (they are not critiquing that agenda)..but I’m suggesting that what we are seeing is the gradual yet clear development of an infrastructure for a political power base totally separate from the Democratic Party, with its own populist base, its own massive wealth, its own loyalists, its own propaganda machine. Now – that’s worrisome.

Here’s what “attracting minorities” looks like for the GOP:

“Would you like a full-time job that you go to every day, work hard at every day, and where you’ll make your way up the food chain through hard work?”

“No.”

“Oh…ummm…er…ahhhh…hmmm…wanna government check for doing nothing instead?”

“Yes.”

Hi, ETAB. Didn’t know you were over here.

The One is probably making yet another try to graft “populism” (as in the People’s Party of the 1890s) onto the idea of a ruling elite (as in the Free Silver movement of the same time). The theme of “cheap money” and government control of transportation and telecommunications (railroads, newspapers, and telegraphs in those days) would certainly be in keeping with Obama’s “I’m not a socialist, I just want to run everything and have you pay for it” philosophy.

Of course, no amount of prior failures will ever dissuade him or his cronies. Because they are just So Incredibly Much Smarter than everybody else. Just ask them, they’ll tell you so. For them, it wouldn’t dare not work.

Of course, if he thinks his new “Free Silver” crowd will end up taking over the Democratic or even Republican party (and it wouldn’t surprise me if that is exactly what he believes), he should really pick up a history book by somebody other than Howard Zinn and look up how it ended the last time.

It’s sickening to me that the MSM is trying to make some kind of hero out of Rodman. All he’s doing is spreading Nork propaganda, being the willing tool in total ignorance of a dynasty that has been butchering its own people since 1945. Of course the liberal pundits eat this stuff up; someone against America can’t be all that bad to them. And the more vociferous, the bigger and more accurate must be his ‘point’.

Liam on March 3, 2013 at 10:25 AM

eon, I’m not sure if this new Obama Party has a political agenda, in the sense of an ideology of socialism, or, as I worry, does it instead have a political agenda in the sense of power. Obama-Power.

That is, the Obama agenda is always removed from debate, dissent, negotiation, discussion. It’s His Way or…he then resorts to threats and hard-line propaganda of apocalyptic scenarios, malicious attacks against any dissenters, misinformation (aka lies) and open emotional manipulation. With the establishment of what is effectively a political party infrastructure of propaganda and funding, all gently inserted into operations of ‘The American Way’ – this is a powerful movement.

It is powerful because it has moved itself as a political voice outside of internal debate (your loyalty is to Obama not an issue he promotes); it is funded by people who themselves want political and economic power not an ideology; and, it is bedrocked within a populist mass of uninformed people dependent on Obama’s goodwill and power in government. Dangerous.

And what is the Obama agenda? It’s certainly not to strengthen or empower Americans, either their economy or their freedoms. In fact, if we move out of hearing of the manipulative rhetoric and focus only on the results, we find that American economic strength is actually collapsing, small businesses which are the bedrock of an economy are strangled in regulations and taxes which prevent them investing, expanding, hiring…

Individual freedom is being smothered within the promotion of the agendas of special interest groups and the denunciation of religious freedom and free speech rights. The laws of the land and the Constitution are regularly ignored by this Administration (budget, secure borders, free press etc).

Therefore, what is Obama’s agenda? My concern is that it is about personal power. Not ideological power. Not American power. Just his need, which I maintain is pathological, to control others. Period.

Certainly, such demagoguery will always fail. But the catastrophic harm it does to millions of people in the interim cannot be ignored.

Cindy Munford on March 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Mimzey, I absolutely disagree that Obama’s agenda is communism. Communism would disempower him and render him an ‘equal among equals’. No way.

I maintain that Obama is not an intellectual; he has never exhibited such, either in his university days (we have no papers, no background of his research and focus on ideology) or now. He never argues an action based on its ideological value; instead, he argues based on its emotional identity. That includes the Stimulus, the GM takeover, ObamaCare, gay marriage and whatever. He is not interested in ideology; his focus is on Himself as a powerful agent.

I view him as a pathological narcissist; that’s not your ordinary Big Boss egoism; it’s a pathology which I suggest he probably moved into as a young boy. Obama lives entirely within his own virtual world of Words. That’s the world where he feels in control. He can’t handle other people as equals, as having rights and powers and thoughts. That’s why he can’t handle Congress.

He needs to control all relations he has – with other people and with the external world. If he can’t control by emotional manipulation and misinformation, he’ll resort to threats and even, malicious actions. OR, that external person and event will simply cease to exist for Obama.

Leave someone with this psychological aberration in a relatively local domain as a community organizer, and his power will extend only to that local domain. Put him into a domain where he has unlimited power – and millions of people to control and dominate, and the need to reduce the power of others and increase his own, becomes overwhelming. That’s why Obama is always campaigning; he needs to feel he controls; that’s why he can’t sit down and negotiate an issue with others – he can’t handle dealing with them as equals.

And if the Others ‘win’ an issue, Obama’s great need is to destroy them – as he did with Petraeus who dared to issue a memo contradicting the WH claim about ‘who knew what’.

So, I don’t feel that Obama acts for ideological reasons; he acts to control others.

Sooner or later he’ll have to go to violent coercion and extra-legal force. The world is simply too dynamic for his control needs. When that happens, we’ll see what kind of people we really are.

Lew on March 3, 2013 at 11:05 AM

To continue my point, ETAB, Obysmal was active in the New Party in Chicago, an outgrowth of the radical Left, which rechristened itself. Franklin Marshal Davis, Obysmal’s mentor, was a Communist, too.

I used to think that, or would like to still think it, but I don’t know anymore. If the guy has one supreme talent — or perhaps it’s talent combined with timing in coming along at the peak moment of media perfidy — it’s how he’s able to get his way while the majority shrugs. It gets worse and worse, and still they mostly shrug. This continues to work to his advantage, as the ones who do protest can be marginalized and demonized.

Or maybe I should’ve said “We’ll find out what kind of people we’ve really become.”

We won’t really know until his control issues drive him inevitably to overplay his hand, and then we’ll see how many of us will have the courage to stand up, and how many will just continue to shrug.

If you followed last weeks Bob Woodward controversy at all, you have to understand we live in a world where the media controls the truth and reality for most of the country. (Re: Benghazi) This president can lie, obstruct and blame everyone else – but he will be regarded by history as one of the best evah. And who dares to get in the way of that? Not the Bob Woodwards anymore.

And that’s the situation for those who do want to know what’s going. Those that could care less about what is happening, probably 33% of America, is more concerned with Kardashian- dancing with the stars- J Z – crap than the cesspool this country is turning into. Truthfully though, many of these people are already there and apathetic.

But that’s just how the media wants- dependent on them snd the government. And they won’t be giving up that control anytime soon.

What did Boehner do in response? Why bother asking. THAT’s the problem. The media being the media is not the real issue or problem anymore as I see it. In fact, it’s kind of a great opportunity-in-waiting. The real problem is our continued, stupid submission to them, to the premise of their moral superiority and interrogative authority. The day someone like Boehner challenges their authority is the day the paradigm begins to shatter.

Dave_d on March 3, 2013 at 12:02 PM

The key that has enabled Obama to nullify the media, (as well as many Americans) as a constructive force in politics, capable of thought and critical analysis, has been race.

I mean ‘race’ in the sense of the development in the US since WWII of identity politics, whether it be skin color, ethnic background, gender identity, religion etc. Identity politics functions by denying the value of rational thought, which is always held by and acted within an individual…and insisting on the dominance of a common group cultural identity and set of beliefs. Such a common identity is almost genetic, immune to reason, open only to ‘being experienced and felt’. Identity politics insists on subservience to this common identity; we all know of the perjoratives flung against anyone who doesn’t follow the group ideology of race, gender etc. The black caucus in Congress for example is quite adamant about this.

What has developed in the US, as a basic component of identity politics, is that no-one, and I mean no-one, can critique or debate or think about anything a member of one of these Identity Groups says or does. They are answerable only to their group and the group has long lost its capacity for self-analysis and enages only in preaching propaganda.

Obama is a 100% example of someone defining himself and being defined as a member of an Identity Group. Now, in my view, he doesn’t see himself as a member of any group, but, his manipulative tactics include identity politics.

As such – he’s immune to criticism.
So, the press and ordinary Americans have been reduced to constant rewriting of his rhetoric, of his actions, of his behavior. His aloofness is defined as a result of his ‘being an intellectual’ rather than a lack of empathy; his malice is defined as being ‘not as bad as so and so’; his misinformation as ‘heh, isn’t he cute’.

Most certainly the media, long smothered in the romance of ‘special groups’, collapsed within the hysteria of Identity politics and moved themselves out of the realm of examining Obama as an individual rather than as a member of a set (race, single mother, absent father) but Obama’s skilled tactic of reminding them, constantly, of these factors has stonewalled the media.

But I agree with others on this thread. Obama is dangerous. Will he go to violent force? I consider him capable of it. Note that he’s already moved outside of legal restraints – including securing the borders, providing a budget, ‘recess appointments’, the EPA, Benghazi and etc. He’s gotten away with these and my concern is that this personal political party, with its megarich donors, that he is developing, will be used by Obama for his personal – not national – but for his personal agenda.

Dave_d on March 3, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Bingo!!!

It’s the same relationship a rock star performer has with their legions of screaming fans. He needs them and he despises them all at once.
He needs them to buy the tickets and scream their adoration and throw their underwear on stage, to make him look miraculous to the watching world. But at the same time, he despises their mindless worship because somewhere at the base of his brain he fears that he’s not really all that great.
In short, he know’s they’re whores but he fears that he’s impotent!

Where do the find these idiots?

The lady who asked about “locking the GOP in a room” until they reached an agreement at President Obama’s recent press conference showed how patience with terrorists doesn’t extend to Republicans.

BTW, she was largely unnamed (except on Breitbart) in the coverage, even on FOX.

She is (drumroll) CNN’s CHIEF White House Correspondent. She earlier had remarks about Governor Romney’s horribly sexist “binder”, President Obama “caving” on the maintenance of the Bush ‘Tax Cuts’ and seems to heave the whole focus of her questions to the silly parts of the left.

Somebody should ask her:

How could keeping an active list of ladies to hire be uncaring about women?

How could slowing an economy with tax increases be good to anyone?

How could someone as stupid as you hold your job?

Answer to the last: Her father made a mint in So Cal real estate when it took all the skill of putting quarters in a vending machine to make $$$$ and her Westlake School is a LA game player of lefty admission programs at colleges. Easy to enter Harvard. Then we have the resume mill buyers at CNN.

The media is not nullified, it is complicit. And most Americans only know what they are spoon fed by the alphabet networks. They have created a world where Palin is a dumb destructive woman, and Biden is a savant who deserves a Nobel award. It’s a world where, with Benghazi, shiite happens and it’s no ones fault- unless a Republican is responsible. The media has found it’s power with an alliance with a corrupt government- and the quid pro game has become the SOP of Big Media – and when someone like Woodward goes just a little bit off script- bam! You’re Alinskied.

And that’s why Ocommie stays away from FOX. They might just not play along.

FlaMurph on March 3, 2013 at 12:36 PM

rrpjr on March 3, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Right. Not a big Newt fan but he understands the media is the enemy and he takes the fight to them. I can’t count the times I have turned off the tube in disgust as Republican pu$$ies get their a$$es handed to them by a media tool the average teenager could best in debate, apparently afraid to confront the media tools directly and personally.

The media is the ENEMY. Why is that so hard for Republicans to understand? They will never give Republicans an even break, so why fear what they will do? They must be attacked and discredited at every opportunity, vilified, degraded and their bias exposed. The war must go on until the media feel the pain and change their ways, which may never happen. But exposing and personally humiliating a biased media tool on national television is an experience they will never forget. More of them need to have that experience.

By the way, did anyone catch David Frums’ completely greatuitous diss of Sarh Palin this morning? I thought Stephanopoulos was gonna kiss him. She is still living rent-free in their heads.

rrpjr on March 3, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Perhaps not legally treasonous, but treasonous ethically and morally. Certainly, it is an open-and-shut case of dereliction of duty. He put politics (#sequesteria) above national security. The administration has a lot more legal authority over how cuts are to be made than it wants the public to believe. Moreover, how can it scream about not having the money to deploy the Truman, if it can find the money to give the Muslim Brotherhood?

I saw the AP story about the $450 million on Drudge this morning and remembered the Truman issue. To my knowledge, no one else has put the two together. Not blowing my own horn, but this needs to be coming out of the mouths of everyone, who isn’t a Democrat. It is the ultimate BS card to call Obama on and can really register in the minds of the public, especially considering how many Americans think foreign aid should be cut.
