Bob Woodward: The White House told me I’d regret challenging them

posted at 8:01 pm on February 27, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via John Sexton of Breitbart.com, I’d sure like to know which ray of Hopeychangey sunshine shared this bit of bright good cheer with Woodward. To be clear, he doesn’t specifically say it was someone inside the White House; I’m assuming that from Politico’s description of this very short clip (“Bob Woodward pulled back the curtain on his battle with the White House over a recent column on the sequester”), but maybe it’s someone from outside the building. Jim Messina, maybe? Remember, he’s into “punching back twice as hard.”

Good point from John:

The clip also helps explain why Woodward took off the gloves this morning on MSNBC. Not here, though: Even when he’s telling Politico about being threatened by Obama’s lackeys, he feels inexplicably compelled to say that The One would surely disapprove if he found out. But why? Letting surrogates do his dirty work has always been key to Bambi’s above-the-fray brand. It started before he became president; it continued in last year’s campaign; it goes on happening today. Would a man who chose Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff, for cripes sake, be shy about playing rough with people? There’s nothing unusual about a pol getting surrogates to fling shinola on his behalf. What’s unusual is that Obama, uniquely, continues to get a pass for it, even by people who claim that his toadies have threatened them.

Update: Here we go.

Update: Annnnd the truth-to-power left springs into action to protect Precious:

Update: Here’s Politico’s write-up of their interview with Woodward, in which he makes clear that he took the e-mail as a threat.

Bob Woodward called a senior White House official last week to tell him that in a piece in that weekend’s Washington Post, he was going to question President Barack Obama’s account of how sequestration came about – and got a major-league brushback. The Obama aide “yelled at me for about a half hour,” Woodward told us in an hour-long interview yesterday around the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.

Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’ ”

If I was Woodward or just a curious journalist in general, I would really want to know where was Obama during Benghazi. We had a 3 am phone call and the President didn’t take it and Mrs. Clinton didn’t take it. So who took the call? Panetta?

Woodward has been conflicted for a while. I could never understand how he could write a book on the debt ceiling debacle detailing how Obama lost his nerve and sank the deal without actually blaming him for it. So, if anyone knows where the sequester came from it’s Woodward. This may just be an issue of journalistic pride but it may be a big enough issue for Woodward to fight if he’s sufficiently old school which I think he is. Now the Obamaites have added threats to their dismissal of his journalistic integrity. At the least, Woodward’s loyalty to Obama is being severely tested and has been for a very long time.

breffnian on February 27, 2013 at 10:11 PM

The Amateur in Chief isn’t smart enough to play this kind of game. When Woodward went after Nixon he had a worthy opponent, one who was able to cover his tracks and it took a lot of investigative reporting to bring him down. They didn’t call him Tricky Dicky for nothing. But that was back in the days of typewriters and dictaphones. EVERYthing can be traced nowadays. If he wants to expose the president for the fraud that he is it should be relatively easy in comparison. He’s probably going to build a rock solid case, expose the president, write a best selling book, sell the movie rights, and live to tell another tale. I just hope we don’t end up with a President Biden in the process.

Nixon did get a raw deal. But I’m certainly with Woodward on this one.

Partly the whole “kind words for the Devil, if Obama attacked Hell” sort of thing. More though that in this case Woodward is right. He’s not going after the administration for anything conservatives haven’t been pointing out in one way or another for four years. It’s just that when it comes from an established MSM name, suddenly it’s time to pay attention.

Sadly, I think the answer is “no.”

The “MSM” is happy parroting whatever line advances The One’s interests. The Lackeys on the Left will go full whack-a-doodle on anyone who dares question “Him” …. and the people who voted for him – - – well, that kind of stupidity never catches on.

This Bozo will be lionized as a “hero” for the next 100 years … if there’s still a United States around in a century, maybe, perhaps by then, people will begin to realize what a disaster he is.

It’s darkly ironic. It was his (and Bernstein’s) success at toppling Nixon that gave birth to entire legions of ‘agenda’ journalists and shitty “journalism”. Eager vapid leftists streaming to Columbia J-School, to learn ‘how to make a difference’. Woodward breathed huge life and energy into the marist march thru the institutions, yet here he is, now, a victim of his success. Being pilloried by leftist illiberals baying for his blood, because he gored the wrong ox.

“I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’ ”

That’s how Woodward treated Nixon, right? “I think if Nixon saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t break into the DNC headquarters and steal things.’”/

Gotta say–the excuse-making for Obama is disconcerting. But that he spoke up about the threat at all is amazing. (How sad that the journalistic bar is now set so low that a reporter mentioning a direct threat from Obama’s aide is a bigger deal and more of a shock than that such a threat was made in the first place…but such is the current state of things.)

Also gotta say–if you are an aide to a president, shouldn’t one of the primary rules you live by be “Do not anger/annoy/draw attention from Bob Woodward”? Quite a foolish move…or the mark of a regime absolutely drunk on power. Maybe a bit of both.

Oh man, I’m really very excited that this is the end of our long national nightmare. Without the MSM running interference for him, Obama’s completely vulnerable. He’s a slacker who’s used to skating by on his charm and skin color at every single stage of his life. He’s never been challenged and always had everything handed to him. I think most of us know a co-worker or someone who’s led a charmed life, coasting by on luck but without a moral compass, then after a tiny thing like getting dumped, his entire life collapses because he has no moral grounding…Multiply that by 1 million for Obozo. When the whole thing unravels, Obama will have no friends in his corner. Imagine what the Clintons are up to. When it comes to liberals, anyone who stops toeing the line is sacrificed for The Cause. It happened to David Horowitz, and it can just as easily happen to Woodward unless he shapes up and flies right. His colleagues will tut-tut him for now, giving him some leeway, but it won’t last forever if he keeps his course.

What kind of convoluted deflection is that? You guys worshiped Woodward for Watergate and now you’re vilifying him for attacking your messiah. End of story.

The facts are as simple as you are.

Much the same way, I imagine, many loyal Party members arrested in the Soviet Union actually believed they had done something to offend Stalin while on their way to the gulags.

Awwww! Poor BobbieWobbie! Low-level trash talk from the guy at the reception desk has him running for his blankie. How did this guy ever get Nixon?

chumpThreads on February 28, 2013 at 6:56 AM

Just as a reminder :
1) Woodward has the e-mail. With the sender’s name.
2) Low level folks would not shout at Woodward for 30 minutes.

But then again, I question the wisdom of someone who would document such a shouting match in an e-mail concluding with a threat.
A questionable action. Don’t you think ?

Seriously, who cares? Woodward is showing himself to be less a hard-nosed reporter than a prima donna who thinks he deserves special treatment.

Reporters get yelled at every day. The guy apologized in writing.

“I think you will regret staking out that claim.”
Is that a threat or a caution?

Woodward needs to man up and stop whining. If he’s got something he should go with it or not. But don’t whimper.

chumpThreads on February 28, 2013 at 8:05 AM

Everyone who thinks Woodward knows what “regret” and “you will regret” meant in this context raise your hands.

After all, he is a wordsmith. He uses words as tools and writes for a living. He has been doing it very successfully for about a half a century. He has been around and writing about DC and politicians all of that time. And he has been dealing with the aids of politicians throughout.

And if Comrade O is really unaware after all of this time that this is how his Chicago Way Gang operates, after being a part of it for decades, I guess he is even dumber than we think he is.

Ah, but keep in mind and consider the arrogance and the hubris of the Chicago Way Gang.

Also, if they will try to bully and intimidate someone like Woodward, imagine the treatment the lesser small fry get if they dare question and criticize Comrade O. Of course, most of them don’t. Most in the MSM propaganda machine know their role and go along.

Woodward was acting too independently. He needed to be read the riot act. It backfired. Woodward knows this came from on high, which is why he went public. His “if only Comrade O knew” refrain is a fig leaf, a peace offering, to Dead Leader. His message to Comrade O is “don’t try to push me around and bully me”.

When does a caution become a threat ? We could parse that all day long.
That the guy ( Gene Sperling) was pissed off tends to give some bias.

New thread on this, btw.

So amazing to see history being rewritten right in front of us. Already we’re being told that Woodward used to be good but is now washed up. We’ll be told soon enough that Woodward is basically an Alex-Jones-like conspiracy nut who took credit for Carl Bernstein’s magnificent work.

Well, at least the real hardcore Obama worshippers are being outed. For them, there was no hesitation whatsoever about who’s right and who’s wrong here; as soon as Woodward spoke up, this former idol of journalism was brushed off as old and in the way.

Pathetic deflection, even for you. I’d expect this from sesqui, he of ‘Grand Wizard’ fame.

I know right. Now, if the email had come from someone in the Bush administration…Woodward would be speaking TRUTH to Power and exposing the fascist ChimpyMcBushitler. Amiright!

HumpBot Salvation on February 28, 2013 at 9:13 AM

woodward didn’t get Nixon. he was given Nixon. he did no work at all.

crash72 on February 28, 2013 at 7:08 AM

Woodie’s role is overblown, mostly because those that unfortunately are writing history hate Nixon so much.

In the case of Nixon, Woodie did his job. That’s all we ask of someone claiming to be a ‘journalist’. If Nixon had been a democratic, I wonder if those ‘journalists’ would have let it all die.
