Bob Woodward: The White House told me I’d regret challenging them

posted at 8:01 pm on February 27, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via John Sexton of Breitbart.com, I’d sure like to know which ray of Hopeychangey sunshine shared this bit of bright good cheer with Woodward. To be clear, he doesn’t specifically say it was someone inside the White House; I’m assuming that from Politico’s description of this very short clip (“Bob Woodward pulled back the curtain on his battle with the White House over a recent column on the sequester”), but maybe it’s someone from outside the building. Jim Messina, maybe? Remember, he’s into “punching back twice as hard.”

Good point from John:

The clip also helps explain why Woodward took off the gloves this morning on MSNBC. Not here, though: Even when he’s telling Politico about being threatened by Obama’s lackeys, he feels inexplicably compelled to say that The One would surely disapprove if he found out. But why? Letting surrogates do his dirty work has always been key to Bambi’s above-the-fray brand. It started before he became president; it continued in last year’s campaign; it goes on happening today. Would a man who chose Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff, for cripes sake, be shy about playing rough with people? There’s nothing unusual about a pol getting surrogates to fling shinola on his behalf. What’s unusual is that Obama, uniquely, continues to get a pass for it, even by people who claim that his toadies have threatened them.

Update: Here we go.

Update: Annnnd the truth-to-power left springs into action to protect Precious:

Update: Here’s Politico’s write-up of their interview with Woodward, in which he makes clear that he took the e-mail as a threat.

Bob Woodward called a senior White House official last week to tell him that in a piece in that weekend’s Washington Post, he was going to question President Barack Obama’s account of how sequestration came about – and got a major-league brushback. The Obama aide “yelled at me for about a half hour,” Woodward told us in an hour-long interview yesterday around the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.

Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’ ”

That’s what was said about Nixon. All that I’m saying is that Woodward has contacts that you wouldn’t believe and access that mere journalists do not. Never underestimate Woodward. If he desires to, he will open all kinds of Pandora’s Boxes for Obama.

Ask a QB which Superbowl was easier going into: His first or his second after winning the MVP in his first.

Obama may not have been born in America but at least I know he is an as shole. I am certain of it.

Goes back to Romney lost votes by not hitting Obama hard in the second debate and not defending himself in the third.

At least Christie would have defended himself.

Wonder if Romney will admit to his feebleness as a candidate when he speaks at CPAC.

Looks like Woodward is on the White House enemies list. Just wow.

Someone on another blog brought up a good point. Perhaps the person Woodward heard from has no idea who Woodward IS. Maybe he’s viewed as just some old-guy reporter. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Obama WH is staffed with people who think history began in January of ’09. Perhaps there are people there who are unfamiliar with All The President’s Men. My bet is Woodward is for real. My bet is he supported Obama but has become disillusioned with him over watching him for the last few years. My bet is Woodward has finally reached his limit and that this is his opening salvo on WOODWARD II. Last time it was against Nixon. This time against Obama. I really think this man feels betrayed. And I think he feels his country has been betrayed too.

Your comment is understandable but unfair and untrue.

If you were inside the Beltway, you would know that both Woodward and Bernstein (and several other lefty writers) are considered loose cannon by the establishment on both right and left. They can attack FOX one month and take off after power centers on the left next. His sidekick, Carl Bernstein, is a real piece of work, too.

Yeah.

That senior person was chosen by Obama, is wanted there and reflects the President.

Maybe…

But Woodward went on the WH Propaganda Channel MSNBS and said that how Obama was lying and his handling of the sequester was Madness.

This would cause cognitive dissonance in those over 40 who know who Woodward is.

Now Woodward says he was threatened by someone (he) at the WH in an e-mail after being yelled at by the same person over his Op-Ed on friday.

Levin was all over this on his radio show.

Woodward did some (rather simple) reporting and said, yes, the sequester was Obama’s idea. He’s catching hell for reporting this, which probably got his dander up a bit. I don’t see him backing down for saying the sky is blue. The WH has to fix this, and I believe it probably will.

Actually, I think VanDeHei and Allen at Politico have recently allowed a couple of small “random outbreaks of journalism” (to borrow Rush’s phrase) to occur under their byline at Politico. Surprising to me, anyway.

But on balance, I still think Woodward will “get his mind right” and make this go away soon.

Woodward said Obama was showing a “kind of madness I haven’t seen in a long time” for a decision not to deploy an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf because of budget concerns.

The Defense Department said in early February that it would not deploy the U.S.S. Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf, citing budget concerns relating to the looming cuts known as the sequester.

“Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying, ‘Oh, by the way, I can’t do this because of some budget document?’” Woodward said on MSNBC.

“Or George W. Bush saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to invade Iraq because I can’t get the aircraft carriers I need?’” Or even Bill Clinton saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to attack Saddam Hussein’s intelligence headquarters,’ … because of some budget document?”

Last weekend, Woodward called out Obama for what he said was “moving the goal posts” on the sequester by requesting that revenue be part of a deal to avert it.

Yep, the ususal Prog media types on Twitter are either bored with this Woodward story or think Woodward has gone off the deep end…

d1carter on February 27, 2013 at 9:56 PM

I remember Nixon. Nixon was not liked even by republicans. He had the fortune of having opponents that were even less liked.

The left will go down fighting to protect their lightbringer.

Now don’t bug me! I need to figure out what kind of printer to get.

cozmo on February 27, 2013 at 8:55 PM

The Left is all about being in POWER… There is no way liberals will turn against Obama… Even if he kills their children and put them in slavery they will find an excuse for him and justify why he did it… Liberals are mentally ill… period…

So who plays Woodward in “All the Presidents Men 2: Madness of Obama”?

BobMbx on February 27, 2013 at 9:16 PM

John Wayne

katy the mean old lady on February 27, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Woodward said Obama was showing a “kind of madness I haven’t seen in a long time” for a decision not to deploy an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf because of budget concerns.

I believe this is the line that got Dear Leader upset…

d1carter on February 27, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Where are those low IQ communist scums and slaves of the States? I do not see them on this thread…

mnjg on February 27, 2013 at 9:57 PM

I think it is on; Woodward is now scheduled for Hannity tomorrow night. If he was going to give it a pass, he wouldn’t be doing Hannity.

Tater Salad on February 27, 2013 at 9:57 PM

I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’

Really, Bob? I sense abother rube who’s in for a rude awakening.

I hope you live long enought to draw back the veil on the Obama administration – if you have the guts for it.

disa on February 27, 2013 at 9:58 PM

The Media created Obama and they are not going to destroy him… It is not that Obama controls the media, it is that the media controls Obama and the democrat party… For them Obama is their ultimate triumph in the last 40 years… There is no way that they are going to destroy their beloved creation… not under any circumstances…

mnjg on February 27, 2013 at 9:29 PM

I think there are some old timers who may have had enough. It will only take one or two. Jon Meacham was grumbling on MSNBC how awful Hillary’s “What difference does it make?” He got shot down by someone and that’s gotta mess with their egos.

monalisa on February 27, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Sorry, “another rube”…

Kind of sad to see some of these Liberal icons eventually grow up, only to be beaten down by the same power structure they helped usher in. Now he wants to play serious journalist and use the First Amendment for the betterment of America as was intended by our Forefathers? Maybe I missed something, but I don’t remember him doing much to vet “The One” years ago.

If I was Woodward or just a curious journalist in general, I would really want to know where was Obama during Benghazi. We had a 3 am phone call and the President didn’t take it and Mrs. Clinton didn’t take it. So who took the call? Panetta?
