Bob Woodward: The White House told me I’d regret challenging them

posted at 8:01 pm on February 27, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via John Sexton of Breitbart.com, I’d sure like to know which ray of Hopeychangey sunshine shared this bit of bright good cheer with Woodward. To be clear, he doesn’t specifically say it was someone inside the White House; I’m assuming that from Politico’s description of this very short clip (“Bob Woodward pulled back the curtain on his battle with the White House over a recent column on the sequester”), but maybe it’s someone from outside the building. Jim Messina, maybe? Remember, he’s into “punching back twice as hard.”

Good point from John:

The clip also helps explain why Woodward took off the gloves this morning on MSNBC. Not here, though: Even when he’s telling Politico about being threatened by Obama’s lackeys, he feels inexplicably compelled to say that The One would surely disapprove if he found out. But why? Letting surrogates do his dirty work has always been key to Bambi’s above-the-fray brand. It started before he became president; it continued in last year’s campaign; it goes on happening today. Would a man who chose Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff, for cripes sake, be shy about playing rough with people? There’s nothing unusual about a pol getting surrogates to fling shinola on his behalf. What’s unusual is that Obama, uniquely, continues to get a pass for it, even by people who claim that his toadies have threatened them.

Update: Here we go.

Update: Annnnd the truth-to-power left springs into action to protect Precious:

Update: Here’s Politico’s write-up of their interview with Woodward, in which he makes clear that he took the e-mail as a threat.

Bob Woodward called a senior White House official last week to tell him that in a piece in that weekend’s Washington Post, he was going to question President Barack Obama’s account of how sequestration came about – and got a major-league brushback. The Obama aide “yelled at me for about a half hour,” Woodward told us in an hour-long interview yesterday around the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.

Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’ ”

Why does the Dog-Eating Unicorn Prince need learn to live in a world where he is challenged? He’s not challenged. And on the off-chance that there is a challenge, the challenger backs off just as soon as the Dog-Eating Unicorn Prince frowns.

BLITZER: Was it a senior person at the White House?

WOODWARD: A very senior person. And just as a matter — I mean, it makes me very uncomfortable to have the White House telling reporters, ‘you’re going to regret doing something that you believe in, and even though we don’t look at it that way, you do look at it that way.’

IndieDogg on February 27, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Woodward acts shocked, as if Fox News isn’t attacked by the president himself.

Otherwise, the only thing they can threaten him with is the usual: access.

And Woodward don’t need no stinkin’ access.

Ben Hur on February 27, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Why do I get the feeling these threats have been made numerous times to reporters, keeping them compliant (not that would need to).

This is a “journalist” who’s allegedly been covering American politics for 30 years?

terryannonline on February 27, 2013 at 8:18 PM

I was reading an article about chavez in the guardian, take a look and compare:

first, undermine checks and balances. You can use it to eliminate any separation between party and state, so as to make government social programs a privilege of the loyal, not a right of all deserving citizens. Create a very large civilian army of political activists that are handsomely compensated by the state for their party work. Limit individual rights, expand controls on everything, including prices and access to foreign currency, and give yourself the power to nationalize any business you choose. That way, people will not want to get on your bad side. “Judicialize” politics by using the courts to put your enemies in jail or threaten them with prosecution. Make it really costly for people to oppose you. Let your collaborators steal generously, and make sure that they know you know about it. That way, they will never dare to betray you.

Second, dominate the airwaves. Limit the airing of critical views with carrots, such as government spending on ads, or by threats of fines, jail or expropriation. Act on these threats with some regularity to refresh people’s memory. Leave some room to your adversaries but make sure you achieve a 30-to-1 balance of airtime. That way you can create your own narrative and prevent them from creating theirs.

Third, in choosing your narrative, be creative. Don’t be limited by truth, reality or common sense. If your country does not have an external enemy, invent one. Whenever you fail, blame a conspiracy. Given your control of the airwaves, by the time people find out there is no truth to your old lies, you will have created 20 new ones.

Fourth, dehumanize your adversaries. Don’t debate them or grant them any form of moral recognition. Never extend the phrase “my fellow citizens” to include those that don’t vote for you. Borrow a page from the 1930s and adopt a worldview in which institutional formalities only lead to gridlock, to the benefit of the enemy. Ask for complete delegation of power from the “people” to their “dear leader” so that he can crush the enemy. Dispense with other complicated formalities.

By skillfully mixing these ingredients you will be able to perpetuate yourself in power. You will have done so at the cost of your people’s prosperity and freedom. But then again, even Chávez cannot win them all.

Woodward won’t go after Obama from the established issues, like Benghazi. He knows they won’t reosnate outside FNC. I also think he’ll pass on the drone issue, because he seems to be for that kind of leeway overseas.

He’ll find something else. Maybe OFA laundering stimulus money with unions.

Looks like Woodward is on the White House enemies list. Just wow.

Someone on another blog brought up a good point. Perhaps the person Woodward heard from has no idea who Woodward IS. Maybe he’s viewed as just some old-guy reporter. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Obama WH is staffed with people who think history began in January of ’09. Perhaps there are people there who are unfamiliar with All The President’s Men. It’s possible.

An important facet of this is that the “White House official” felt secure and confident in making this threat because they know that the media won’t hold them accountable for these and other similar actions and they know that they can get away with it.

This is the mortal danger of having a compliant, cheerleading media of one ideological mind who promote and protect the powers in this administration because they agree with it instead of doing their job of holding political powers of any political stripe to account.

Being the eternal optimist, I think we’re exactly at that point. I remember when the Watergate burglary story broke before the election. I thought, now, Nixon is finished —then nothing. It seemed there was only the one little story. Then, like a time delay fuse things started to happen after the election. There’s a slew of things that could sink Obama, and once the bloom is off with the press they’ll fall on him like a pack of hungry wolves.

I want to go on record as being one who welcomes our new lizard overlords.

I’m happy to be on record telling them to go f*ck themselves, frankly.
