Napolitano: These sequester cuts will make it tougher to secure the border and fight terrorism, just FYI

posted at 4:41 pm on February 25, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

And there it is: The ultimate panic-inducing cherry on top of the sequester-scaremongering sundae. Apart from the devastating, eviscerating, meat-cleaving threats of flight delays, park closures, and whooping cough, the existential threat that is the dreaded sequesteration is going to make it much more difficult for the Department of Homeland Security to perform one of its primary functions: Thwarting terrorism. Via WaPo:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday that her agency would be forced to furlough 5,000 border control agents under mandatory spending cuts, likely allowing more illegal immigrants into the country and potentially compromising national security.

Napolitano said the cuts, known as the sequester, would disrupt the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to conduct customs inspections at ports, leading to increased waiting times for travelers and cargo shipments. Disaster relief funding would be reduced by $1 billion, she added, meaning relief for victims of natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy and tornados in Joplin, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., could be cut. …

Asked if the cuts would make the country more susceptible to acts of terrorism, Napolitano said: “It’s always a threat. We do what we can to minimize the risk, but the sequester makes it awfully, awfully tough.”

There certainly could have been better methods for cutting the federal budget, but all of these increasingly dire warnings are making it sound an awful lot like we’re supposed to believe that every single one of the dollars that the federal government proceeds to spend on our behalf these days is the result of nothing short of absolute necessity, and that not a single one of these departments can possibly afford to trim even the tiniest bit from their budgets with sweeping societal calamity. Is there no amount of money too large to sacrifice to federal stewardship? Has nobody in this administration ever heard of prioritizing? …Evidently not:

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) on Monday demanded that President Obama’s budget office stop agencies from hiring low-priority employees in order to preserve essential workers in the face of the looming budget sequester. …

Coburn, in a letter to Acting Office of Management and Budget Director Jeff Zients, wrote Monday that there are 10 “non-essential” job advertisements running on the government’s hiring website, www.usajobs.com. Coburn said freezing hiring for these positions alone would save $1.4 million. …

“Are any of these positions more important than an air traffic controller, a border patrol officer, a food inspector, a TSA screener, or a civilian supporting our men and women in combat in Afghanistan?” Coburn wrote.

The Obama administration has been trotting out Cabinet officials and agency heads in rapid-fire fashion to attest to the many and egregious ways in which Americans’ lives will be totally ruined unless Congress can find it in their obstructionist hearts to compromise just the teeniest bit — but as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said on MSNBC over the weekend, all of the campaigning and over-the-top scaremongering is getting really old, really quickly.

My recommendation to the president is it’s time to stop campaigning. It is time to actually do the job here in Washington D.C. In our second term, for example, last year, we passed one of the most sweeping educational reform laws in the country, giving real choice to our kids, putting right teachers in the classroom. … My advice to the President’s stop the campaigning, stop sending out your cabinet secretaries to scare the American people. Roll up your sleeves and do the hard work of governing.

A few years back, Nebraska voted on whether or not to cap property taxes in the state. For months ahead of the vote, we heard nothing but hysterical prophecies of doom and disaster. Teachers would be cut. Police and firemen would be cut. All kinds of services would have to be curtailed. The amendment failed. Within two weeks, the state revealed a plan to purchase dozens of chairs for the Capital building at something like $60,000 per chair to replace the old, decrepit chairs that made Nebraska look bad. The icing on the cake? The chairs were manufactured in Pennsylvania, not Nebraska.

Lies, lies, lies.

The president got an $800 BILLION stimulus his first year in office and that $800 BILLION has been part of the budget every year since then.

How many Americans know that?

So Obama got a 1/3 increase in federal spending and now we’re supposed to believe that a 10% cut in that 1/3 s going to wreak havoc?

What if the stimulus had never happened? Spending would be $800 BILLION less than it is now!

If I were in the GOP leadership THIS is the message I would repeat ad nauseum.

It would also be my starting point for budget negotiations, i.e., where spending woud have been without the stimulus.

No one is getting a pay CUT nor is any PROGRAMME. The budget baseline is what the CBO determines federal revenues, outlays, surpluses, and deficits will be assuming future budgets will equal the current budget times the inflation rate times the population growth rate. THE CURRENT BUDGET BASELINE SAYS THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL SPEND $44.8 TRILLION BETWEEN 2013 AND 2022. THE SEQUESTER WILL CUT THIS NUMBER BY $1.16 TRILLION, BARELY 2.6 PERCENT OF WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PLANS TO SPEND UNTIL 2022.

I was directed to increase the bottom line which had been shrinking as the owner spent more and more time on safaris, fishing trips, private plane, world travel etc. When going through the books I discovered that we were paying property taxes and insurance on about 25 vehicles that had been sold several years earlier. Same story on several pieces of heavy equipment! We were paying real estate taxes on several homes that we built, sold and already closed! Same story on several lots that had been sold! I will never, never, believe that any enterprise can’t take a few cuts! Anyone in business will readily relate to this experience! The fools in D.C. not so much! This is the same crap Dems trot out at the state and local levels whenever they don’t get the tax increases they want and have to “tighten the belt”. Suddenly cops and fire fighters will soon be in short supply. The massive bureaucracies never get touched.

farsighted on February 25, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Honestly, my first thought when the lazy rat-eared one rolled out that riff about teachers and losing their jobs was- why is the federal government paying for a single teacher? Education is a local/state issue.

That being said, we do have federal fire fighters. In the US Forest Service and on military bases are two examples that come to mind. But of course, the rat-eared wonder was doing a variation of the Chicago mantra….

Nice house you go there, be a shame if something happened to it.

Happy Nomad on February 25, 2013 at 6:21 PM

I am so sick of this “fear porn” produced by the executive branch in DC. Just sick of it.

karenhasfreedom on February 25, 2013 at 6:26 PM

It was the story of the past election. You have reached a tipping point where over 50% of electorate are takers. The only thing that solves that is crash and rebirth.

can_con on February 25, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Or serious people making the hard leadership calls.

The rat-eared wonder met with the US Governors today and albeit along partisan lines it was pointed out that governors do not have the luxury of simply printing more money and/or borrowing.

Sequestration looms and the President says it is a bad idea. He’s been fearmongering for over two weeks now about the issue. Yet he has yet to extend one idea for resolution. He and his party simply want to increase taxes on the successful yet again so the parasites feel no pain. I think that needs to change. If we are to view these parasites, moochers, and takers as equal citizens then they too must sacrifice. If that isn’t the case, then they do not deserve to be part of the electoral process any more than a mentally disabled individual. You’ve got to contribute to society to have a say in its future. Worrying about the future of your Obamaphone benefits is not contributing to society.

Napolitano: These sequester cuts will make it tougher to secure the border and fight terrorism, just FYI

Since you’re doing neither, we won’t see any effect.

BobMbx on February 25, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Flight delays, park closures, whooping cough, terrorism…

But what about the elephant in the room, Barry, what will be the effect on global warming?

petefrt on February 25, 2013 at 6:46 PM

In other words, the Democrats are screaming that you can’t keep doing the same stuff if your funding is cut.

Well…duh.

Did they expect to get more done with less money? Thats a tactic used by the evil private sector, btw.

Keep getting that info out. Your posts are always nicely formatted and informative. If only we could get a few million more to pay attention to what is going on. I fear it is too late, alas

tom daschle concerned on February 25, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday that her agency would be forced to furlough 5,000 border control agents under mandatory spending cuts, likely allowing more illegal immigrants into the country

Uh, isn’t that what Democrats want?

GarandFan on February 25, 2013 at 7:11 PM

Hey Big Sis…go manage an all “girl” bowling league.

You’ve already given up on the border from orders from the Kenyan King…if his illegal uncle can stay for 30 years…why bother with the others.

Twana on February 25, 2013 at 7:20 PM

We live along the Lake Huron shoreline in Michigan, with Canada 40 miles to the East. On the road that runs along the lake, on a daily basis I see the green and white late model Dodge Charger border patrol cars parked at the scenic overlooks, etc., with the agent presumably taking a nap (it’s hard to tell because the windows are tinted dark). I’m assuming I won’t be seeing this after the end of the week?

moo on February 25, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Didn’t I see Napolitano in “The Man with the Golden Gun” I think they called her Nick Nack.

stormridercx4 on February 25, 2013 at 7:42 PM

And Liberals claimed Bush was a fear monger with terrorism…Well Bush had good reason for that..Obama is making this crap up and this is just the ice cream on top of the cake…security..what a bunch of liars

sadsushi on February 25, 2013 at 7:56 PM

With any luck, if they keep this scaremongering going on long enough even the low information voter might grow tired of believing them.

DaveDief on February 25, 2013 at 8:31 PM

I thought Obama’s priorities were ignoring the border and supplying terrorists. Who knew?

nraendowment on February 26, 2013 at 6:10 AM

Napolitano’s going to be at the Airport Lounge all week, I hear.

~~~~rimshot~~~~
hillbillyjim on February 26, 2013 at 9:43 AM
OK, so a 2.5% cut is going to furlough 5,000 border agents? Let’s see, that would mean that we employ a minimum of 200,000 border agents? And, border agents are what percentage of DHS employees – maybe 15-20%? So, there are 1 million DHS employees, minimum? Hmmm, I think I begin to see our problem here……
(Oh, and that 2.5% cut is really a 5% growth, so……)
GWB on February 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM
FYI
ICE had a total of 20,000+ employees in 2011
CBP had a total of 58,000+ employees in 2011
So, a 2.5% cut (if it were a real cut) would furlough … 500 people in ICE and <1,500 in CBP. And only some portion of those are border agents.
GWB on February 26, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Has Janet Incompetano ever apologized to the family and friends of Bob Krentz?
He was a rancher who owned and operated a large border cattle ranch operation and was murdered on his property.
Krentz was a gentleman and friend to everyone.
Shot several times. His neighbors trailed the perpetrator and closing in on him ready to ‘bring him to justice’. (Or just prep him for a dirt nap and food for worms.) BUT were told by CBP, et al, to cease and desist and ‘let the government’ handle the situation.
The killer then made his way across the border, never to be seen again.
Yea Janet nice work, you’re a perfect fit for King Putt and the Affirmative Action Administration.
