LaHood: These sequester cuts are going to be super painful for the flying public

posted at 4:01 pm on February 22, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

As Peggy Noonan and Ed already opined this morning, all of the scaremongering over the sequester coming from the Obama administration is getting just a tad on the overly dramatic side, with all of the dire predictions about the many ways in which our societal infrastructure will crumble in on itself — and it looks like the White House has identified one of those talking points as having maximum Chicken-Little impact on the general public. Bringing out the Obama administration’s most high-profile ‘Republican’ to do the talking, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood insisted that sequester cuts are “going to be very painful for the flying public” in terms of the delays and cancellations that will start up when the FAA starts furloughing employees:

More from Roll Call:

“I would describe my presence here with one word: Republican,” LaHood said from the White House podium. “They’re hoping that maybe I can influence some of the people in my own party.” …

“I suggest that my former colleagues on the Republican side go see the movie ‘Lincoln,’ because in the move ‘Lincoln’ it shows how hard it was back then to get things done,” he said. “But what Lincoln did was he gathered people around him the way that I believe President Obama is doing by calling Republicans, talking to them, trying to work with them, and when that happens big things get solved.” …

Still, LaHood said, “What I’m trying to do is to wake up members of the Congress on the Republican side to the idea that they need to come to the table, offer a proposal so that we don’t have to have this kind of calamity in air service in America.”

Hold up: It’s actual news when the president bothers to merely telephone the leaders of his opposition in Congress (the same day he shamelessly demagogued the bejeesus out of their motives, by the way), but Obama’s political wheeling-and-dealing tactics are like Lincoln’s? …Rand Paul, for one, is not impressed with the way the White House is playing this:

WisRich on February 22, 2013 at 4:16 PM

I’d love to know what the line-up is since it seems to be a flunky a day coming out and crying the blues about the non-cuts. If you really looked at this closely, the Democrats front-loaded a lot of spending, when they were able to pass budgets without any Republican being able to do anything about it and this sequester is only about half of them.

Anything that even has the possibility of leading to the shrinking (or even death, in the best of all possible worlds) of the TSA is a good thing. Let the administration shut down the airports and flights. Let people finally see the idiocy of what has been happening at our airports.

Meanwhile, the TSA has not stopped a single potential hijacker in all this time … though they have let a bunch of criminal reporters get stuff through.

INACCURATE STATEMENT: LaHood: These sequester cuts are going to be super painful for the flying public.

ACCURATE STATEMENT: LaHood: These sequester cuts are going to be MANIPULATED BY US TO BE super painful for the flying public.

FYI: The Repub-controlled House has ALREADY PASSED TWO BILLS that take a targeted approached to cutting OBOZO regime spending (aka, WASTE). Naturally, dingy-harry killed both before the Senate could even look at them.

As detailed brilliantly in editorials in The Wall Street Journal, the total amount of “cuts” from the Sequester are as insignificant as a tiny pimple on Mooch’s humongous butt. Nobody with a brain should give a nanosecond’s thought to the Sequester. The ONLY reason the lunatic-left is squawking is because to them even ONE PENNY cut from their out-of-control, destructive, massive spending extravaganza is unacceptable. Sane people have a different view. However, the mass ignorati that votes (multiple times) for their own destruction haven’t the brain-power to digest the meaningful facts of this matter. Yes, all is lost for America. Accept it.

Let’s look at this: $85B cut next year. With 315M U.S. citizens, that results in a government “benefits” cut of about $270 per person. i.e., on the whole, each man, woman and child in the US will see the federal government spend $270 less for “services” supplied to them. How this equates to total destruction of the TSA, no first responders – ever, tainted food, collapsing bridges, 800K civilian DoD employees begin furloughed, etc. when the total budget right now is $3.1T is beyond me. It’s almost as if that $85B is funding everything useful that the federal government is doing and the remaining $3.015T is going to frivolous things. $85B of $3.1T, a mere 2.7% of the total budget is going to bring down death and destruction. Truly amazing. Yet that same government has no problem with a 17% to 20% increase in gasoline prices in the past month alone due to said government’s policy of shutting down energy production.

As one of those dreaded FAA employees, I am disgusted with LaHood’s tactics as well. The ironic thing on the proposed cuts, are Control Towers that may have to shut down at small airports that serve small to medium communities. Some of these Towers are already under the Federal Contract Tower program. This allows for the same service at a greatly reduced expense to the tax payer. A great cost saving measure, yet the overly large part of the budget for the FAA(support staff, managers and others at a higher salary) will stay in place to a large degree. Those folks at those Contract Tower facilities will be out on the street until the budget is fixed. This is a potentially large blow to small business owners who rely on those airports to make a living.

I have a part time job on the “inside” at Logan (Boston), so far there has been nothing what-so-ever about any interruptions anywhere, anytime.
I’ll poke around this weekened.

It’s almost as if they’re using air traffic controllers, cops, teachers and firefighters as human shields or something.

What I don’t understand is why is the executive branch escaping the blame for this?

Jugears is president — that pretty much precludes any conclusion that we live in a sane world. Ever.

They promised the end of the world when they had to cut back on fire fighters here. Of course they couldn’t cut back on Union management making three times what a tenured fire fighter made though. That was two years ago.

Amazingly even with empty fire houses scattered around the town is still here.

Yet another member of the Obamunist Politburo engaging in the art of the Big Lie, who should be whipped in the street for their mafeasance.
‘baseline budgeting’ means these “cuts” are nothing of the sort. Even with $40B+ reduction in annual increase from civil budgets, they will STILL have more funds than they operated on last year. Yet somehow magically now it means shutdowns of essential services. It is a LIE, and a LIE oft repeated by Democrat tax hawks, who piss away every dime they steal from us.
The purveyors of this scam must be punished. Particular those in the media helping to shove this lie down the eager gullets of the LIVs.

Does this mean that the flying public will have to bend over even further? Just askin’.
So, prezzy finally picked up the phone to call the opposition leaders but does that mean he discussed anything more than his golf lessons or that he played a round with Tiger.

Sequester might be the best thing to happen to this country. Let business go about as normal and see how efficient things can be without government interference.

Just finished watching MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON on TCM, how interesting are the comparisons of a controlled press in Smith’s state to the present situation, only now it’s the entire nation’s media that’s sold out.

Once we were as as naive as Jeffereson Smith in believing that one man could make a difference. Unfortunately there are no Claude Rains in DC that have a conscience.

You want a “sequester”…how about we go to 2007 spending levels. That should’ve been the headline for 3 years; but the farther we get from that point, the more set things become.
