Depressing poll of the day: Public opposes cuts to virtually all types of spending

posted at 6:41 pm on February 22, 2013 by Allahpundit

Nothing new here, which is the most depressing part. Scroll halfway down the page at Pew and you’ll find a table tracking shifts in public opinion on various programs over the last four years. There are noticeable jumps in support for cuts from 2009 to 2011 as America got a snoutful of Obamanomics, but we’ve leveled off since then — and in not a single category of the 17 tested is there 50 percent in favor of decreasing spending. In fact, in only three of those 17 categories (foreign aid, unemployment aid, and the State Department) is there more support for decreasing spending than increasing it.

The most hopeful graph at the link is one purporting to show that the public’s become “more austere” because the big lead that fans of raising spending used to have over fans of cutting spending is now a bit smaller. Alternate headline: “Blogger’s Friday-night drinking to start early.”

p

As you see, apart from foreign aid, support for cuts never reaches 35 percent. Even in the case of foreign aid, you have a slight plurality in favor of at least preserving the status quo rather than cutting. There’s not much hope in partisan differences either. Of the 17 categories, Democrats prefer cuts to increased spending in just two; independents in just three; and Republicans in nine — although even GOPers support increased spending for, gulp, Medicare and Social Security. I realize I’m making too much of this; when you ask people whether they want to cut a program without emphasizing countervailing considerations like deficits, obviously they’re going to be reluctant. These questions at their core are really just gut checks on how valuable the public views each program or agency to be. They see comparatively little value in diplomacy, which is why foreign aid and State get low ratings, and much more in veterans’ benefits. And yet, after four years of hot political rhetoric about exploding debt and a fiscal crisis on the horizon, you would think that the numbers for increasing spending, at least, would be minuscule. They’re not.

By way of partially explaining why, I’ll leave you with these two tweets.

Instead of doing any real investigative analysis of the comparative growth in federal budgets year to year, the ratio of the sequester cuts to the total expenditure, the malfeasance of ‘baseline budgeting’ wherein nothing is ever truly cut, where “cuts” are actually only a reduction in the amount of INCREASE in spending, thus ensuring that this year’s budget is ALWAYS greater than last year, you sit here with your stupid little emotive reactive eeyore prism, shoveling the phony media bullshit along. Reinforcing the leftist memes, instead of deconstructing them. Why do you do this? Why do you FAIL to work against the crap liberals perpetrate?

Depressing poll of the day: Public opposes cuts to virtually all types of spending

That’s why we have had a Constitution that restricted the feral government from even thinking about spending money on most of these things – because the public is not supposed to be running the governemnt according to their whims.

The feral government wasn’t supposed to be buying car companies or banks … just because “the banks and car companies begged us to buy them” or anything else of the sort. The feral government doesn’t “run” the economy and the people have no power to direct the feral government to do so. The feral government doesn’t have the power to force people to buy their chosen health insurance, and they don’t have the power to penalize tax penalize tax … whatever, individuals for inaction in order to fund un-Constitutional feral programs or directives.

Our Constitution was meant to limit the whims of the people as much as to limit the scope and powers of the various branches of the federal government. That Constitution is what domesticated government. Once that government broke free of the domesticating constraints of the Constitution it went totally feral and will not be domesticated, again. One must put it to sleep and start over.

The way to ask this is “How much more would you being willing to pay to the government in order to raise spending on ______? Virtually nothing would get support for an increase. Then ask would you be willing to cut spending on _______ if half of the money saved was returned to you as a tax refund? The support for spending cuts would skyrocket.

KW64 on February 22, 2013 at 7:08 PM

What do you expect, it’s a bad poll!!

Something like..

The U.S. Government borrows $0.46 of every dollar it spends. What programs or agencies would you cut to reduce spending by 46%?

Without a reason, the answers to the questions are meaningless.

CrazyGene on February 22, 2013 at 7:08 PM

“Eventually we do have a problem. The population is getting older, health care costs are rising … . Something is going to have to give. We won’t be able to pay for the kind of society we want without some increases in taxes and surely in the end it will require some middle-class taxes as well, maybe a value added tax. That’s not all. We’re also going to have to … really make decisions about health care, (and) not pay for health care that has no demonstrated medical benefits. Death panels and sales taxes is how we do this.”

- Paul Krugman, speech at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, D.C, January 2013

“Somebody has to tell the middle class that either your taxes are going to go up or your programs are going to get cut or else we’re going to go into financial oblivion, and nobody really wants to tell them that.”

-Howard Dean, February 2013

“To restrain the U.S.’s future budget crisis, the federal government must raise taxes by at least 35% and cut entitlements such as health care and Social Security by 35%, according to International Monetary Fund economists.”

- Economists at the IMF

GarandFan on February 22, 2013 at 7:13 PM

The U.S. fiscal gap, calculated (by us) using the Congressional Budget Office’s realistic long-term budget forecast — the Alternative Fiscal Scenario — is now $222 trillion. Last year, it was $211 trillion. The $11 trillion difference — this year’s true federal deficit — is 10 times larger than the official deficit and roughly as large as the entire stock of official debt in public hands.

This fantastic and dangerous growth in the fiscal gap is not new. In 2003 and 2004, the economists Alan Auerbach and William Gale extended the CBO’s short-term forecast and measured fiscal gaps of $60 trillion and $86 trillion, respectively. In 2007, the first year the CBO produced the Alternative Fiscal Scenario, the gap, by our reckoning, stood at $175 trillion. By 2009, when the CBO began reporting the AFS annually, the gap was $184 trillion. In 2010, it was $202 trillion, followed by $211 trillion in 2011 and $222 trillion in 2012.

When fully retired, 78 million baby boomers will collect, on average, more than 85 percent of per-capita gross domestic product ($40,000 in today’s dollars) in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Each passing year brings these outlays one year closer, which raises their present value.

Governments, like households, can’t indefinitely spend beyond their means. They have to satisfy what economists call their “intertemporal budget constraint.” The fiscal gap simply measures the extent to which this constraint is violated and tells us what is needed to balance the government’s intertemporal budget.

The answer for the U.S. isn’t pretty. Closing the gap using taxes requires an immediate and permanent 64 percent increase in all federal taxes. Alternatively, the U.S. needs to cut, immediately and permanently, all federal purchases and transfer payments, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, by 40 percent. Or it can mix these terrible fiscal medicines with honey, namely radical fiscal reforms that make the economy much fairer and far stronger. What the government can’t do is pay its bills by spending more and taxing less. America’s children, whose futures are being rapidly destroyed, are smart enough to tell us this.

First lets look at the date to make this poll.

Does anyone believe this poll’s demographic breakdown?

GOP: 22%
Democrat: 32%
Independent: 41%

I mean the GOP is messing up right now, but not 22% of the population bad.

Basically considering how bad the sample was, I think conservatives should avoid cutting the bottom five on the list, and try cut or reform all the rest. You can balance that out with new revenue from cutting lots of loopholes and increase taxes on the entertainment industry, lawyers, abortions, violent movies, pornography, and lets see oh yes anything Warren Buffet and George Soros have invested their money in.

I call that balanced. Time for Hollywood elite to pay their fair share…

That is why conservatives should be pushing school vouchers. Give parents a choice to send their kid to the local nightmare of a public school or get a voucher from the state government equal to the amount of the spending for each student in that school system to pay to send their kids to a private school, or another public school, or to home school them. Most parents would pick the second option. The state government would be mandated to give this option by of course the federal government. The progressives wanted more federal control….I say give it to them.

Now for the conservatives here who don’t understand because no cutting is involved. This has some immediate benefits, every dollar going into the parents hands is one less dollar going to teacher’s unions, and thus one less tax dollar going to the democrat party and one less dollar going to brainwashing kids to be progressives.

See conservatives love education…we just wants to give parents the choice…

Allahpundit if you ask someone to try and redo the federal budget while standing there you are going to get different answers about where to cut but overall there are more people who think an area should stay the same than cut. There is a reason the founding fathers set up a Republic. There has to be horse-trading and compromise in budgeting and a single person isn’t going to be able to do that in a poll question.

In summary, polling things that can’t be decided outside of a group of people (some would call it government) isn’t a result that you should ever take seriously. You aren’t going to get budget decisions from a poll. I am not sure why you are trying.

Here’s what the GOP needs to do. Cut just one department majorly for the next two years. I think the Department of Energy is a great choice to target because we can use the example of Solyandra. And do what we can to cut Health and Human services. After the 2014 election we should cut something else in 2015, but be very careful not to rile anyone up in 2016 by further cuts.

These would keep the GOP troops enthuastic, but not invite a backlash. If we make no cuts at all, people will continue to despair.

thuja on February 22, 2013 at 7:42 PM

I’m with Rush. I’m ashamed of my country. The majority of the nation has become a pathetic bunch of slaves to the profligates. Once a country reaches that point, is it even possible to recover?

scalleywag on February 22, 2013 at 7:43 PM

I swear if conservatives don’t forget about politics for a while and focus like a laser on taking back our system of education from the communists and socialists teaching our kids nothing will matter any more as we’ll never win a SINGLE argument because none of our citizens will have any idea why we are right. Further they won’t have the slightest touch with the facts in order to be persuaded. Explaining American principles and conservative values to the average American now is like explaining how an airplane works to a medieval surf. It confuses tem so much that they just assume you are telling them crazy stories.

Warner Todd Huston on February 22, 2013 at 6:59 PM

How? Since when has the Conservative sphere been focused on education? That’s for people who are too incompetent to learn a trade or start a business…right?

Sorry, but we shot ourselves in the collective foot on this one looong ago. What we didn’t value, the Socialists did and ran with it. We as a group need a serious attitude adjustment if we are to save this country. Just how I see it.

Oh it is!

The majority of LoInFo voters now all just want the ‘free’ stuff, thinking little to how it is to be obtained.

The more I see read and hear, the more convinced I am that we should L.i.B!

…Once a country reaches that point, is it even possible to recover? scalleywag on February 22, 2013 at 7:43 PM

That question has been on my mind for a very long time :-(

The conclusions I have reached is;

1 L.i.B.

2. Give the dems everything they want and let them ‘hang’ themselves…

3. We as conservatives HAVE to unite and fight esp in the media!

Look at it this way. You’ve seen enough of my posts to realize that I speak my mind without regard for whether others like my opinions. So, why should I suddenly start caring enough about how folks see me to bother with an alter ego?
