Video: Rise of the “bugbots”

posted at 6:41 pm on February 19, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, it’s old, old, old news that the U.S. and Israeli militaries are working on micro drones and, potentially, nano drones. Even the existence of the “micro-aviary” at Wright-Patterson is no secret. But this subject has new relevance now that the White House’s “white paper” on targeting U.S. citizens like Awlaki has leaked so you’ll want to watch below and read National Geographic’s nifty new piece out today about the growing ubiquity of UAVs. Drone warfare and cyberwarfare are the bleeding edge of defense but they’re running in opposite directions in terms of scale. Hacking used to be about breaking into individual computers; now it’s about stealing secrets across industries and taking down national infrastructure. Drones currently specialize in bird’s-eye views of terrain and sizable explosions to destroy a target; in the future they’ll likely focus on smaller-scale surveillance and individual assassination. How freaky could that get? Read this. If these things work as advertised, the age of “collateral damage” will be over. As will the age of accountability, if it isn’t already.

Since we’re on the subject, Salon’s reporting today that a new poll shows liberal support for drones increases significantly when it’s Obama, as opposed to some other president, who’s ordering the strikes. If, as some on the left rosily predict, we’re staring at Democratic control of the White House for the foreseeable future, and if the GOP position on this technology continues to be dominated by hawks rather than by more libertarian types, then the years ahead should be pretty darned drone-y.

Solution: Slingshots

Yup. Plus shotgun for the next 70 yards, and 30.06 for the rest.

We don’t need any firearms to take out these drones. If Iran can figure out how to do it so can the ham radio operator down the street.

A trendsetter eh? You can get away with that in a few places now, but I can see the concept catching on and spreading, especially as a byproduct of global warming. Our future summers may offer more than most of us would want to see.

I think that’s the solution. Invent a drone killer that’s easy to build at home and can’t easily be traced.

Imagine a million of these on the battle field armed with explosives.
One million of them. How could you fight them?

EMP, I guess. If they weren’t protected by it. How would a soldier fight against 10 of these things acting in unison? What if a million of them attacked our fleet?

Very scary stuff. I hope we’re working on counter measures.

You know that’s what you’re thinking.

Taking them out isn’t a problem. Detecting them is the problem.

Let’s ask Iran…they seem to have it down ;)

Maybe the ‘democratization’ of technology can protect us from some of the dangers to individual liberty that technology creates. By way of analogy, the 3D printer and gun magazine limits come to mind:

How 3-D printers will make magazine-capacity limits obsolete

petefrt on February 19, 2013 at 7:26 PM

Well someone else can explain how to make one. The fact is that we have EMP guns that can zap those little buggers.

I would think that jammers and area EMP pulse generators would quickly follow.

sharrukin on February 19, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Great! The technology is getting there. Now we just have to find some really tiny pilots. ;0

Seriously, people go wow over the technology but I think few realize how this is going to push such areas as the laws of warfare and just how the United States should respond when one of our enemies launches those things on our soil.

Happy Nomad on February 19, 2013 at 7:38 PM

Do we have air traffic control for all these flying objects or can multiple people just be flying around on a whim with no regard for what else is in the air? Maybe they’ll all just destroy each other.

I think that’s the solution. Invent a drone killer that’s easy to build at home and can’t easily be traced.

HA! There’s no law against it…yet! You’ll have to go underground to build it. The government is going to force us law abiding citizens to become anarchists.

The technology isn’t the problem.

The current administers of power are.

It also depends on the administrators definition of ‘threat’.

So, in other words, all patriots in the US are screwed.

Give me 10 minutes and I’ll find a way to administer adhesives directly to a microbot or nanobot… in spray form. Does wonders for grounding such things. Shellac should work pretty well I would think… 1 lb cut, fast drying… a bit of alcohol to help out on thrust for a moment and then… instant varnish.

ajacksonian on February 19, 2013 at 9:40 PM

I don’t know why they’d go to the hassle of doing their little dna scheme when the bug could just inject something to kill you straight away. You could save a lot of steps.

Buddahpundit on February 19, 2013 at 9:43 PM

We need to begin to look at them as target practice!

If, as some on the left rosily predict, we’re staring at Democratic control of the White House for the foreseeable future, and if the GOP position on this technology continues to be dominated by hawks rather than by more libertarian types, then the years ahead should be pretty darned drone-y.

I fear for the future of humanity but hope that at some point enough people will ‘wake up’ that we might actually be approaching a new dawn of liberty. People seem to be moving in the right direction, I’m just not sure if it’s far enough, fast enough.

FloatingRock on February 19, 2013 at 10:34 PM

At some point the technological web of control over people will be so complete that it may be impossible to organize resistance to tyranny. Unless the liberty movement rises up and takes over the levers of power again soon, it may be too late to stop the technological yoke of global tyranny that is being crafted for our progeny. There may be no refuge on Earth. Perhaps someday some act of nature or chance will set the human race free again, but perhaps not, technology is very powerful and redundant. I sincerely hope people will be wise and turn their personal liberty-security dials back toward liberty before it’s too late.

HopeHeFails on February 19, 2013 at 11:28 PM

The problem is energy. Right now they can’t make them last “more than a few minutes”. And I guarantee that is not in flight – it’s in sitting-there-passively-watching mode. Until someone cracks the nut on a nano-dynamo, these are just a dream.

That or battery shoes passing 1 million volts at low amperage across the surface of your skin to take out the drone mosquitoes.

Oh, and no further human contact, of course, to avoid those infected with the superbug tagged to your own DNA.

Just curious: how long until the left figures out that everyone should have their DNA code read and stored at birth?
