Shimon Peres to present Obama with Israel’s Presidential Medal of Distinction for some reason

posted at 10:41 am on February 19, 2013 by Allahpundit

If he was qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize despite having accomplished nothing, I suppose he’s “qualified” for this. Next year’s honoree, presumably: Chuck Hagel?

From the Times of Israel:

“Barack Obama is a true friend of the State of Israel, and has been since the beginning of his public life,” Peres and the award committee said in explaining their decision. “As president of the United States of America, he has stood with Israel in times of crisis. During his time as president he has made a unique contribution to the security of the State of Israel, both through further strengthening the strategic cooperation between the countries and through the joint development of technology to defend against rockets and terrorism.”

Obama’s presidency is typified by “an unswerving belief and ongoing fight for equality without any regard for religion, race, sexuality or gender and the strengthening of the weakest in society in the United States; and for the fulfillment of the values of democracy, human rights, solidarity and peace across the world,” the announcement stated. “Through his personal story and his agenda as president of the United States of America, Barack Obama is a symbol of democratic values and he exemplifies the spirit of equality of opportunity in American society.”

What’s he done for Israel? Well, there’s Iron Dome, and he did help out when Egyptian goons attacked the Israeli embassy in Cairo. Then again, by backing the revolution over Israel’s partner Mubarak, O made both of those things more necessary than they might otherwise have been. (A Tel Aviv University poll conducted shortly before the election last year found 57 percent of Israeli Jews hopeful that Romney would win versus 21 percent hopeful that Obama would.) Oh, wait — he gave Shimon Peres a medal last year too, which, per Israel Matzav and the JPost, is likely the true reason Peres is honoring him now:

In the business of presidential medals, reciprocity is the name of the game.

President Shimon Peres will honor US President Barack Obama with Israel’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Distinction, just as Obama conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian award, on Peres at a presidential dinner in Washington in June…

It was more or less on the cards that, if and when Obama visited the country during his second term, Israel would find a way of showing its appreciation for his contribution to the Jewish state’s national security. This sentiment will be emphasized in the citation accompanying the medal.

Yep, but there’s politics involved too. Peres has pushed a more dovish line on Iran than Netanyahu; revisit this NYT interview from last month recounting his public efforts to pressure Bibi into holding off on an attack. By honoring O, he’s providing a symbolic vote of confidence from Israel’s left in the White House’s diplomacy/sanctions approach. Commit this quote from the Times piece to memory, though, because even Peres has his limits: “But in the end, if none of this works, then President Obama will use military power against Iran. I am sure of it.” Show of hands: Who else is sure?

Only if someone can trick Obama into thinking there are a bunch of American citizens at the intended targets in Iran.

I think they are awarding him this “medal” to tick off Israel’s
enemies. The “enemy” list has been emboldened by Obama’s lack
of support for Israel. Now, they will wonder more about what
Obama might be doing for Israel behind the scenes.

Kabuki Theatre. If true, it is well played.

I so agree as I sit here listening to him blame Congress for not doing their part to end sequester and the constant crisis to crisis stage we are in.

If I didn’t know better he actually sounds reasonable. I only wished he were.

It is just more of the SOS, different day with first responders standing behind him. And IT’S NOT HIS FAULT!! ESH

You guys have to understand: Shimon Peres in Israel is what Ted Kennedy is in the USA, except instead of drowning a girl in sans Chappadiquick, he killed a whole bunch of fellow Jews in Altalena Incident.

So, do all previous recipients now feel dirty?

OldEnglish on February 19, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Peres is just playing typical leftist politics. I doubt this is something most Israeli’s think is appropriate, nor Netanyahu.

sharrukin on February 19, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Gah. Peres is such a fool. There’s a reason he is President now and not PM. And as Archivarix said, this is the kiss of death for Obama with a large segment of the Israeli population.

But it will sadly give Obama’s media sycophants and paid social media flacks here in the US a huge hammer to bludgeon his critics with. “There go those silly LOLGOPers again, saying Obama hates Israel. But he just won their highest award!!1!1!!!”

rockmom on February 19, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Just adding to his resume for Rushmore. It’ll happen in your lifetime. You’ll be able to see that grin right next to the racists on the rest of the mount.

I gotta wonder what the heck he was told to do by his masters and get a medal for if he was a good boy Obama did to make Israel want to give him such an honor and appeal to his sense of showboating?

He deserves a medal about as much as his followers deserve their Obamaphones – in other words, not at all. At the very best this is an unearned honor that is an insult to anyone who’s ever earned it.

MelonCollie on February 19, 2013 at 11:42 AM

I’m thinking Peres has just painted Obama into a corner. All those Israel hating Muslim nations have got to be wondering about whose side Obama is really on.

This is nothing more than an internal Israeli slap at Bibi from the Left.

At some point one can wonder what % of Jews actually see themselves as a viable culture without bowing and scraping to their enemies? Or has the survival mode of the concentration camps (do anything, suffer any indignity, inflict indignities on your brothers, appease your enemies to survive) has become core to the modern Jewish sub-conscious?

Kiss the ring – then marvel and perish when Tel Aviv goes up in a mushroom cloud thanks to Barky’s decision to allow Immadinnerjackt to develop nuclear weapons. It’s not betrayal (Barky betraying Israel) – because betrayal involves somebody at first even pretending to be on your side. Barky has never been for Israel but rather for her enemies. This is just complementing someone on how nice they look as they press the gun to your forehead and pull the trigger.

It won’t look good to Obama’s Muslim adherents that he is getting an award from Israel.

Irony perhaps?

Obama’s relative divorce from Israel gives Israel far more freedom of motion than when the strings were tighter.
