New Mark Sanford ad for Congress: God believes in second chances, you know

posted at 6:31 pm on February 18, 2013 by Allahpundit

There’s shameless, there’s really shameless, and then there’s a guy touting his credentials on government accountability after he went AWOL as governor to visit his mistress on another continent and initially stuck taxpayers with the bill. Intentionally or not, the fallout from his affair comes off in the ad almost as a credential. We make mistakes, we learn from them, we become better, wiser people for it; he’s a better civil servant now than he was when South Carolina made him governor, I guess. To think, if he gets caught up in one more major scandal, he might end up as presidential timber.

The more I think about this comeback, the more I find that what grates the most is the naked careerism of it. You may remember that Sanford started out as a congressman in the mid-90s; what you may not remember is why he left Congress in 2001. Quote:

Sanford was elected to the U.S. House in the 1994 Republican takeover of the U.S. House based on newt Gingrich’s “Contract With America.” Sanford had not been involved with politics before — he considers himself a “citizen-legislator” — and he had no problem accepting the term-limit item of the Contract With America (many others in the same GOP freshman class DID have trouble with that item, including some who promised to exit and are still in the House!)

Because the Contract With America never did pass Congressional term limits, Sanford describes himself as a “self-limited” House member — he voluntarily restricted himself to three terms. Sanford makes a compelling case that “self-limited” Congressmen really do vote differently than other Congressmen — because they don’t have to worry about getting re-elected, and don’t plan to have a career in the House.

His support for term limits came with a caveat even then: Upon retiring from Congress as a “citizen-legislator,” he wasted no time running for higher office as governor. Had he not ended up “hiking the Appalachian trail,” chances are good that he would have tried to advance from “citizen-governor” to “citizen-president” last year. As it is, faced with the prospect of becoming a — shudder — citizen-citizen again, he’s decided that that fourth term in Congress isn’t such a bad idea after all. Who knows? If his polling rebounds, maybe he’ll term-limit himself again and try to unseat Lindsey Graham as citizen-senator in 2020.

The punchline here is that South Carolina’s GOP House caucus is famously fiscally conservative and frequently votes as a bloc, even if it means defying Boehner and the leadership. It’s true that Sanford’s record on spending is very good, but that’s also true of many, many other Republicans from SC. Yet he’s the favorite to win. Three cheers for name recognition?

The forgotten scandal:

More sickening was the fact that rules of engagement prevented suppressive fire from being aimed at the tower firing on the Chinook. Billy Vaughn, father of slain SEAL Aaron Vaughn, recalled how a three-star admiral explained this breach to the grieving families: U.S. forces couldn’t fire back, the admiral said, because “we want to win hearts and minds.” As Mr. Strange later put it: “What about my heart? What about my mind?”

VorDaj on May 16, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Arguably this issue should be the biggest issue right now and needs to be immediately addressed and the the full chain of command right up to the CIC needs to be taken to task.

1. I’m using “regular” to mean the main Hot Air blog, as distinct from “Headlines.” 2. The Hot Air page generating software is currently, occasionally, mangling the pages such that, at least, comments presented are not the post’s comments, and/or the previous and next buttons do not link to the correct previous or next pages. I’m using the word “broken” to mean “the unverified and uncorrected data,” the site’s pages just as they were downloaded. 3. This analysis is preliminary because it includes only searches of the regular, broken site. 4. All combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters were considered. 5. Only the date range beginning after the first registration after Al Sharpton uttered “Resist We Much” to the end of last month was considered.

K.

The word “liverpudlian” and the misspelled fragment “puldian” do not appear in the regular site.

One word containing the fragment “pudlian” appears three times:

Where, oh where, is squishypudlian with her “Ed Fail of the Day?”

CurtZHP on November 22, 2011 at 11:09 AM

chumpThreads on March 13, 2013 at 4:39 PM

And, yet, you felt the need to make a comment.

kingsjester on March 13, 2013 at 4:42 PM

He got the call because libtardordie and squishypudlian are getting tired and forgot why they’re here.

CurtZHP on March 13, 2013 at 4:43 PM

Nicole Brown Simpson would like a word with squishypudlian.

CurtZHP on April 9, 2013 at 2:23 PM

A little more context. According to a cursory Google search, the word “Liverpudlian” actually appears on the regular site (anytime) three times, all three outside our date range: two unambiguous references to Paul McCartney, one to John Lennon. And in addition to those and the above instances, Google is returning results for terms like “squishypudlian” that don’t appear in my data set, but should. The number of these additional results is small, and it appears to be decreasing. I suspect that much of Google’s index of Hot Air is being temporarily clobbered by the Hot Air software problem. Having had one eye on these for a few days, I saw nothing that contradicts the rest of this preliminary report.

So.

Preliminary conclusion: No one has called you a Liverpudlian.

1. First possibility. Reading through the threads, it may not have been immediately clear (at an earlier time) that squishy pudlian referred to sesquipedelian. Not being familiar with sesquipedelian (at an earlier time), and not following CurtZHP closely enough to notice the habitual name mangling, I remember not understanding squishy pudlian one day, reading through the headlines. Though it’s obvious now, is it possible you mistook the target (at an earlier time)?

Another. The insults were something other than “pudlian” based.

Another. The insults were “pudlian” based, and I just haven’t found it.

*sip*

PS: Anyone ever worked this hard for a chick who’s probably not even hot? And even if she is, probably won’t think you are? After work, before dinner, instead of hearing the radio, hearing your own internal monolog: “Wet’s twy sewching for wesist, again!” –”No.” –”But, she might be impwessed if we’re successful.” –”No. I’m tired.” –”But I wuv her!” –”She’s probably got a partially assimilated sibling growing out of her head.” –”I’ll wuv dem both!” –???

No? Just me? Thought so.

She names the law broken. …the Hatch act and shows the way for the GOP to rake the entire obama branch of government ovr the coals for months sending people to jail for illegal acts and moving this scandal fromthe realm of politcal hay to one of fundemental rule of law and order.

The Hatch Act of 1939, officially An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities, is a United States federal law whose main provision is to prohibit employees (civil servants) in the executive branch of the federal government, except the president, vice-president, and certain designated high-level officials of the executive branch, from engaging in partisan political activity. The law was named for Senator Carl Hatch of New Mexico.

Scandalous Hat Trick

Mr. President, when it rains it pours, but most Americans hold their own umbrellas. Today in the Rose Garden you dismissed the idea of a Special Counsel to investigate the IRS scandal. With that, your galling political hubris shined bright in the midst of today’s dark clouds.

Mr. President, how can we trust your Justice Department to conduct an independent investigation when there is a systemic violation of the Hatch Act throughout your administration?

Surely you are aware that the Hatch Act prevents certain federal employees from engaging in political activity. Specifically, it’s illegal for these federal employees to engage in action in support of or in opposition to a political party, a candidate for partisan political office, or a partisan political group.

Yet that is exactly what’s happened within the IRS, the Justice Department, and in the Benghazi cover-up. This scandalous hat trick is on your watch. It is not believable that you knew nothing about Obama administration actions in dealing with these scandals. And in regards to Benghazi, when you should have taken appropriate action to save American lives – for instance by calling in the Marines – you were AWOL. Just weeks before the election your team scrubbed the Benghazi talking points in 12 different versions, lied to the American people about some YouTube video being to blame for the deaths of brave Americans who put our country first, and you prove Michael Barone right when he writes, “What actually happened in Benghazi was out of sync with the Obama campaign line.” That’s why you all did what you did. Pure raw politics were at play during a horrific time of loss.

For more evidence of Hatch Act violations right under your nose, simply consider DOJ’s “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into the free press. Do you think they picked up some political talk when tapping the phones in the House press gallery?

Your team is out of control. Those who cannot remember the past and learn from it are doomed to repeat it, and that is exactly what is happening. Look back exactly 40 years ago this week and apply that disheartening chapter of American history to the team you’ve chosen and lead today.

Some of us warned America; we cautioned voters in 2008 that a community organizer with no executive experience and no sense of accountability would be a very poor choice for the nation’s top management position.

Mr. President, you said today that you have “complete confidence” in the Attorney General. America doesn’t. Eric Holder needs to appoint an unbiased Special Counsel to investigate the illegal political action of this administration. And then Eric Holder needs to resign.

Most Americans see ominous dark clouds looming beyond the White House Rose Garden, Mr. President. They’ll roll away only when light is shined on the Obama administration’s antics, and America will only recover when you cease avoiding responsibility in this mission of yours to fundamentally transform America. For that to happen, the press had better learn from their experiences of being duped and provide a deserving public fairer, more intelligent coverage.

Speaking of coverage, glad you finally called in the Marines… shame it was just to hold your umbrella.

- Sarah Palin

btw GOPE THIS is how you attack and use this issue to destory the dems and obama and save the country.

From 2009

Anonymous DOJ Blogger Campaign Attacks Media and Critics

The Department of Justice has hired a team of partisan Democrat campaign bloggers to work at the Department. The Muffled Oar has learned this decision was treated with a great deal of skepticism both inside the career ranks at the Department but also among some Obama loyalists who expressed concern that such a decision would lend itself to the growing appearance that the Holder Justice Department is more political than the Bush Justice Department was ever accused of being.

Tracy Russo is one such blogger from the campaign of John Edwards. The unit is housed in the Office of Public Affairs. Not only is the Department of Justice Blog Squad going to reach out to nontraditional media like TPM Muckraker or the Muffled Oar, but they are also tasked with placing anonymous comments at conservative leaning blogs such as the Free Republic.

They are also tasked with posting anonymous comments, or comments under pseudonyms, at newspaper websites with stories critical of the Department of Justice, Holder and President Obama. One conservative editor recently told the Muffled Oar that they have noticed a significant increase in the number and aggressiveness of comments to stories critical of the Holder Justice Department. “There is clearly a designed effort to rebut stories that are exposing the Holder Justice Department as more political than the last. We’ve seen a change in the pattern of anonymous emails we receive and comments posted at our paper’s webpage.”

One shivers at the thought of a team of Department of Justice Bloggers anonymously trolling the web to spin the message of a President. It is particularly terrifying when those same anonymous government employees at the Department attack media outlets and newspapers anonymously. How much longer before the Blog Squad operates in the open to intimidate political opponents and critics?
