Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on February 17, 2013 by Allahpundit

On Friday, National Journal called Rand Paul “the Republican to watch in 2013.” He’s certainly the one to watch this morning: Amid an otherwise dreary Sunday a.m. field, he’ll be on Fox to chat about counterprogramming Marco Rubio after the SOTU, blocking John Brennan over drone strikes in the U.S., enraging his dad’s fans by voting no on Chuck Hagel, and panicking the GOP consultant class with the potential for a third-party run in 2016.

After Paul’s segment is over, switch to ABC and watch Dr. Ben Carson on “This Week.” The line-up via NJ:

Meet the Press hosts White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., former Rep. Gabby Giffords’, D-Ariz., husband Mark Kelly and California Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom

Face the Nation hosts White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

This Week hosts Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas and former Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Fox News Sunday hosts Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

State of the Union hosts Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., former Rep. Steve LaTourette, R-Ohio. and Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo.

Get the best makeup person you can. Watch the lunges for the water bottles. Keep your hands away from your face. Ask FOX to go to a shot of you laughing uncontrollably if they show a clip of any Democrat speaking but especially Vice President Biden.

BTW, every time I see Joe I am reminded that all of our Donkeys are descended from the Algerian Wild Ass and you never have a clue what they best is going to say or do next.

Is it the Algerian? Well, some Wild Ass, anyway.

What is our POTUS doing this cold Sunday? I need more OBAMA!

While Ribio has immigration as his current minefield to get through, it’s going to be interesting to see how Rand tiptoes through his own situation, based on how many of his dad’s supporters got the vapors last week due to his opposition to the Hagel nomination.

The assumption going forward for 2016 has been that Ranl Paul starts with 100 percent of the base of Ron Paul’s supporters, if he runs for president. But that base alone can’t get him the nomination, and as shown with the Hagel situation, when he takes steps to expand his base beyond his dad’s, he risks stirring up opposition in a “Hell Hath No Fury Like An Anti-Israeli Libertarian Scorned” manner. But at the same time, he’s really going to have to prove to people outside that base that his differences from his dad on policy aren’t just superficial and he’s just saying what he needs to say to be a viable candidate, in the same way that Obama won by not saying what he couldn’t say between 2004 and 2008 about his real views, in order to not just win the general election, but win the Democratic primary over Hillary.

It should make for some interesting questioning for Rand over the next three years (and from the media’s standpoint, it will be interesting to see how they treat the younger Paul, since for the moment, fears of Marco Rubio and Republican inroads on Latino voters seem to be atop the big media’s list).

jon1979 on February 17, 2013 at 8:47 AM

Rubio probably is the scariest thing that the Democrats have had to deal with in awhile. And yes ethnicity is part of it. But it is also the background story (really hard to portray him as an old white rich guy), the “Mr. Sunshine” act, and the mad political skillz. He isn’t exactly ready to be President, but lots of energy will be poured into making sure he is over the next three years.

As for Rand Paul, I don’t think that the Ds see him as a real threat in the same way that they’re freaked about the Savior. I think that of all the proposed Republican candidates that he is the least likely to win a general election (outside the obvious.. Jeb Bush, Rick Perry, etc.) Rand Paul will be a very prominent Senator for as long as he wants to be, but I don’t ever see him living in the White House.

For the fine folks here exchanging with chumpthreadstomediahacks about media bias, it isn’t worth it. He has never offered a single point of proof to his claim that it doesn’t exist and you know it is demonsterable. Clearly. You could provide examples all day and he would still deny it because he has to. Whenever a liberal proffers the meme that the bias is the stuff of Conservative conspiracy theories, I myself am usually predisposed to dismiss most everything else they say. They’re either stupid or very insincere.

The half-truths and outright rank propaganda exists and he knows it. And he needs it. yet, liberals will argue the “objectivity” of the MSM because they cannot effectively sell their asinine issues without the media helping them push.

obama the president, is as much a product the media as he is the electorate. In just this election, his first debate in Denver would have sank the career of any Conservative. The media was his calvary.

I am extremely dubious of the leadership qualities of Rand Paul as long as he insists on looking at that bad toupee every morning in the mirror and believing it looks natural, appropriate or statesmanlike in any way.

Hee… This is important.

Also, JMac and Ryan both defended Rubio on his immigration dustup with Obama.

Sure, it is that brand of “compassionate” conservative that believes in no child left behind, medicare part d, and pandering borders. “Neo” could just as well stand for “Non” in my book. Throw in the belief as the world’s police officer and that sums it up.

I went to look at some pictures of him and sometimes it looks fine and others…well not so much.

It seems to mean different things to different people.

Neoconservatism is a branch of American conservatism that includes endorsement of political individualism, free markets and the assertive promotion of democracy, and American national interest in international affairs including by military means

The term “neoconservative” was popularized in the United States during 1973 by Socialist leader Michael Harrington, who used the term to define Daniel Bell, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and Irving Kristol, whose ideologies differed from Harrington’s.[6]….

It’s an interesting question though.

But if the choice is a toupee wearing Conservative and a Marxist with a head of natural hair…

“Neo” conservative usually is applied to recent converts to Conservatism from the ranks of the formerly liberal leaning, who bring into conservatism many residual affects from their former political persuasions, tainting it and diluting it.

The term “Neo” means “new”

You are correct, I should have used a different word. Too broad in meaning. In my mind it is more of a parting from “traditional” conservative values. Another word I shouldn’t use…traditional.

Sure you should. But you should understand that “traditional” really means … are you ready for this?…Biblical.
