Jesse Jackson Jr. had some cash flow problems

posted at 11:31 am on February 16, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

It seems like I can still remember back when Jesse Jackson Jr. disappeared for long stretches of time to seek treatment for debilitating health issues, becoming a sympathetic figure on the Left. Ah, good times, good times. Ed brought us up to date a couple of weeks ago, after it became obvious that there was quite a bit more to the story and that Jackson was heading for some serious legal problems. Well, now the tale is just about fully written and the details may come as a shock even to those who suspected the worst. The former congressman and his wife were dipping into the cash contributed by their supporters at a hefty pace, funding a lifestyle which was “way beyond their means” and the expected penalty is going to be high.

Former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) will plead guilty to conspiring with his wife to illegally spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses, including a $43,000 Rolex watch, fur coats and memorabilia associated with Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Bruce Lee, according to information obtained by POLITICO.

The charges against him include conspiracy, making false statements, and mail and wire fraud…

Prosecutors will recommend a prison sentence of between 46 months and 57 months for Jackson Jr., as well as a fine of $10,000 to $100,000, and forfeiture of a yet-to-be-determined portion of the misspent $750,000 in campaign funds.

I’m not sure if Jackson really is suffering from some sort of mental illness or it was all a dodge to put up a smoke screen around an investigation that he knew was closing in on him. But either way, this isn’t going to turn into one of those cases of money getting lost in transfer or a misunderstanding of the campaign finance laws and what constitutes legitimate campaign expenditures. The details being released by the prosecutors are pretty graphic.

In one instance there was a completely bogus charge for “billboard expenses” transferred to his wife’s business and then almost immediately moved to their personal account to pay down credit card charges. Others ranged from, “airplane tickets, booze and cigars to groceries.” It would be difficult to argue that anyone seriously thought those were legal expenditures for a political campaign unless your campaign manager was Billy Carter.

But if there’s any plus side to all of this, the people of his district have probably learned a valuable lesson, and will quickly move to elect a fiscally conservative Republican with a sold background in financial management who will ….

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Sorry… almost injured myself laughing there.

In just the last decade Chicago has given Illinois two ex-governors who ended up in federal prison, the last two governors. And now a US Congressman and probably his wife.

Chicago has also given us Dear Leader.

The ones who were caught were the stupid ones and/or the ones who PO’d too many others and got hung out to dry. Blago wasn’t too bright and neither was Junior. The sheer audacity they exhibited, assuming they could get away with it, tells you all you to know about how politicians operate in Chicago, in Illinois, and now almost certainly in the WH.

If you follow local Chicago news, what passes for leadership in the black community on Chicago’s South Side is terrified that their next representative will be — (looks around and leans in to whisper) WHITE!!!

I think Debbie Halvorson is the only serious white candidate, which leaves the black vote with the possibility of being split about 10 different ways.

Bloomberg’s PAC has been supporting former state rep Robin Kelly, who has been running on an anti-NRA platform.

And then there’s former Congressman Mel “Love Me Some Catholic Schoolgirls!” Reynolds, who went to jail for diddling an underage campaign worker.

Former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) will plead guilty to conspiring with his wife to illegally spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses, including a $43,000 Rolex watch, fur coats and memorabilia associated with Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Bruce Lee

From the Bloomington Pantograph:

A mink cashmere cape, Bruce Lee memorabilia, a Michael Jackson fedora and an Eddie Van Halen guitar are among property listed in a federal criminal complaint filed Friday against former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

Jackson Jr. was charged with spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal expenses.

The document lists a “football signed by American presidents” worth $5,000, thousands of dollars’ worth of Martin Luther King Jr. memorabilia and four items purchased from a California furrier on the same day in 2009 for a total of $5,000. They included a mink cape and parka.

The complaint states the property is subject to forfeiture if Jackson is convicted of conspiracy.

Jimi Hendrix memorabilia and Malcolm X memorabilia also are listed as subject to forfeiture.

A Guitar Hero wearing a mink parka? Definitely resume enhancement!

He’s a crook but he’s our crook idea is not new. If one looks at our country’s history we can see in past that immigrant communities, once they took power, acted in a similar way to accept illegal actions by “their people” as we now see in the inner cities and in some major cities, as in Detroit. Unfortunately for the cities and their people, modern political crooks do not at the same time improve the cities as was done in the past; they now seem to be all “me” people. Sadly, the modern voter believes promises over substance even when it is presented by crooks.
