Cuccinelli: It’s time to pivot back to conservative principles
posted at 2:01 pm on February 15, 2013 by Erika Johnsen
As Virginia’s Attorney General and Republican candidate for governor Ken Cuccinelli attested on Ed’s show on Wednesday, a big theme of his gubernatorial campaign is going to be about the importance of beating back the brazen overreach of the federal government and the virtues of relying more heavily on federalism as an efficient policy problem-solver. Like he told The Hill:
“I think we should pivot back to principles,” Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R), the party’s nominee for governor in 2013, told The Hill.
“The reason Obama is the president in the first place is Republicans failed to lead in the first half of the last decade,” Cuccinelli said. “We need to get back to showing the American people why they work, how they work.” …
“I campaigned very explicitly on pushing back on the federal government if they overstepped the bounds of the Constitution. I just never thought I’d have so many opportunities,” Cuccinelli said. …
“This sort of across-the-board regulatory assault we’re seeing from this administration hurts poor people first and poor people worst. Some people forget that. It’s as unavoidable as gravity,” he said.
His role in suing the federal government over ObamaCare and his recent victory over the EPA‘s overreach will definitely be great high-profile selling points for the conservative base, and the early campaign winds seem to be at his back, but Virginia’s newly solidified oh-so-moderate purplishness means this race is going to need a delicate hand. As much as I applaud the unabashed and unintimidated small-government, founding-principles conservatism, the Democratic team is just waiting in the wings to pounce with the sort of “these Republicans are so extreme” blather to which Virginia unfortunately proved itself more than susceptible last November — and it’s already started.
All of those lovely war-on-women, “Mitt Romney is just like Todd Akin!”-type radio ads to which we Virginians were treated during last year’s campaign season? Those are going to be coming back in spades, and Planned Parenthood is on it. Via Politico:
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC are teaming up today to launch a campaign against Cuccinelli, the state attorney general, on women’s and health issues, POLITICO has learned.
“If the November election taught us anything, it’s that voters are sick and tired of politicians like Cuccinelli who want to insert themselves into our personal medical decisions. Cuccinelli’s ongoing attacks on women’s health and economic security should be a warning to us all: women’s health will be on the Virginia ballot in 2013,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
At the center of the campaign is a new website, “Keep Ken Out.” The site features news clips about Cuccinelli, a blog and a list of his positions on issues like abortion, contraception and Obamacare.
Goody.

Without a black candidate on the top of the ticket Democrats chances diminish. Virginia turned “purplish” due to the huge turnout in the black population.

As far as I’m concerned, we can’t have enough Ken Cuccinelli’s in government. Can’t wait to vote for him again.

If only Cucinelli hadn’t used that “pivot” word…
Yes…the GOP turned Conservatism into a joke when the GOP decided that Conservative principles somehow were bad for America.
Now…all of a sudden…somehow…principles are important again?
We do not need a pivot…we need a fundamental reconstruction of what Conservatism is all about….Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness…Freedom. Nothing less.
Until Conservatives understand that once again…and elect representatives and officials who live, breathe and are willing to die for those same principles…we will continue to be stuck under that rubric “well, our candidate is not as bad as your candidate.”

Our side should form fake groups that celebrate abortions… Stand in front of baby murdering clinics and cheer on every woman who gets in and out of the abortion clinic… Make huge posters of the butcher doctors in these clinics and give them all praise and glory… Make this national and let us see what will happen to the abortion movement… If killing the unborn is such a great right isn’t time to celebrate it?…

Great idea. If anything, it will lampoon the real pro-abortion groups for what they are – commercial butchers and their paid enablers.

Since we always know what weapon the enemy (and they are America’s and freedom’s enemy) isn’t it about time that we pre-empt their weapons by striking at their use of them? How about demonizing the real demons instead of shrinking into passive tears?
I suspect that the GOP just won’t do that–it risks their lucrative lifestyles.
Don L on February 15, 2013 at 2:27 PM
Pivot back to small government? Are you kidding me?
The era of small government is over. The upholding and implementation of Obamacare assures that the state will play an ever intrusive role in our lives. And the GOP has signaled that they’ve accepted that this bastard monstrosity is here to stay, as they used whatever political capital they still had after the election to push for Amnesty rather than retrench in the fight to block the implementation of it. Kasich and Brewer have signed on which should tell everyone where we stand.
Let’s be real here. Barring massive civil disobedience or something like a Constitutional Convention or a breakup of the United States, we are living in a new reality.
Welcome to Amerika.

It’s not enough for Cucinelli or any candidate to speak in terms of “principles” and “regulatory assault” like it’s profound. Paint a truthful picture with examples to demonstrate what a principle means to each individual in action or how a regulation craps on business’s ability to operate. Show the consequence of Democrat’s plans for them versus his plan. This is what Democrats do -they use emotions and consequences- but with lies.
Regarding Planned Parenthood, give examples of how O-Careis THE SINGULAR PROGRAM that puts a giant wedge between your desired personal care via your doctor and your actual care. O-care intrudes into EVERY aspect related to your health. Spell out death panels, paying for others’ choices through your premium, and the Fed. reaching into your bank account to take payments etc. The plain truth is, Obama is the one who is going to be present at every checkup, every treatment, every payment etc. from the beginning of your life to the end. Show the voter that their being taxed to fund other people’s choices (abortions via planned parenthood) means less money to spend on THEIR choices. Appeal to fear, choice, dignity etc. That’s what Dems do but with lies.
LetsBfrank on February 15, 2013 at 2:30 PM
You forgot Obama’s OFA machine. They don’t need blacks running to the polls anymore – they learned to vote for them. Tested in Philly and Cleveland, found safe and working, will be repeated ad nauseatum.
Archivarix on February 15, 2013 at 2:32 PM
They also had the state blanketed with paid staff and $$$ to turn out those voters. Meanwhile our team was paying consultants in Washington who clearly didn’t care if Romney loss the election.

I’m sick and tired of the murder of unborn life being mis-labeled “womens’ health.” Ms. Richards, if you think you are going to win with the same disgusting ads you ran in October then you prove that there truly is such a thing as a stupid woman. Your playbook is known and Mr. Cuccinelli will fight back in a way that Mr. Romney did not. And all you greedy stupid whores who only care about the “right” to murder can go to hell.
And BTW, I’m not that big a Cuccinelli fan. I just hate dishonest whores.
Happy Nomad on February 15, 2013 at 2:34 PM
We can’t get cocky, but Virginia is definitely not Philly & Cleveland!
22044 on February 15, 2013 at 2:35 PM
Wouldn’t work – just another media blackout. They will not report anything that doesn’t advance the pro-abortion agenda. The only way you could get any coverage is if you did something that they would consider to be damaging to the pro-life cause but ultimately backfired on their narrative.
crrr6 on February 15, 2013 at 2:37 PM
Virginia was a “battleground” but one where there was little ground organization for the GOP. Groups like Planned (murder to prevent) Parenthood ran that outrageous ad making the claim that Mitt Romney wanted to ban all abortions. And they ran it over and over again.
I’m not a big Cuccinelli supporter and I think there may well be a third-party candidate if it is deemed he has pivoted too far to the right. Nevertheless, it is time we citizens take our state back from worthless parasites like Cecile Richards. A bitter ugly woman that SHOULD have been subjected to the “procedure” she hawks to innocent women. The picture of her at the General Assembly when the Ultrasound Bill was voted on is the epitome of pure ugly hatred.
Happy Nomad on February 15, 2013 at 2:40 PM
Says who? It takes a few urban districts with 105% voting rate to throw a close elections. The true horror was in how meekly the GOP took it up the wazoo – not a peep from Romney, nor RNC, nor the Governor, not even the local activists. Would you bet your life, or your house or salary, that it cannot happen in your state? My thought exactly.
Archivarix on February 15, 2013 at 2:40 PM
We’ve been giving the voters a choice between Dem and Dem lite since 2006 and it isn’t working.
I stand on principle because it is the right thing to do, but for God’s sake more John McRomney’s isn’t a path to victory of even the nominal sort and the Republican establishment keeps trying it again and again.
Give the voters a choice, not an echo, as a wise woman once said.
18-1 on February 15, 2013 at 2:44 PM
I saw voter fraud at my VA polling place. A guy who admitted he wasn’t registered to vote was provided a provisional ballot nonetheless. Why if not for fraud? VA does not have same day registration. So, make no mistake, VA Democrats are just as corrupt and evil as their national counterparts.
Happy Nomad on February 15, 2013 at 2:50 PM
But let’s make a distinction here. It’s okay to agree on some principles, even for different reasons. I sometimes get the sense that there are those who want “choice” to mean full-throated opposition to whatever position is held by the other guy.
Even with low information voters, a candidate can score points by explaining the principles behind their position. They may be greedy stupid parasites but they are not completely unintelligent.
Which, BTW, brings up another point. The conservative movement needs to start running candidates that have a consistent position on priniciple. Romney lost key debates simply by the fuzzy line he used to try and explain why Romneycare was not Obamacare. It isn’t but don’t think that the left didn’t grab on to that tighter than Michelle Obama holds her ribs and lobster.

In ChiTcago everyone know that the’honest politician’ is the one that STAYS BOUGHT, but in the rest of America we know that our representatives keep working for those who WORK FOR HIM, thus he will stay the course as long as people at the grass roots level keep showing up to cover his back.

You do realize that by Cuccinelli mentioning that he would push back against the Federal government; that it means that Karl Rove will be out there looking for a less controversial and divisive candidate to run in the Republican primary and split the vote … for the good of the Party. And if Cuccinelli wins the primary, the Institutional Republicans will either refuse to support him, or support a third party candidate [I've seen it done].

Answer: Absolutely nothing
tom on February 15, 2013 at 4:56 PM
There will be no primary race. Cuccinelli is the Republican candidate. If anyone else wants in, they have to be 3rd party or independent.
I will continue to push back against the naysayers, because:
Cuccinelli won his AG race by 15 points in 2009
McDonnell, the current governor, won his race by 18 points
McDonnell has a good record as governor and solid approval ratings among all Virginians
Cuccinelli has won challenging races before, starting with his race to be a delegate in Northern Virginia
Obama won the race last year, by less than a point, by getting many votes from people who won’t participate in an off-year election
McAuliffe will not be a good candidate for the Democrats

I am a Virginian from the Piedmont.
I think the best solution is to divide Virginia into two states, North and South.
My part of the state is nice and red and the Yankees can have the North.
Good riddance!

Note to Cuccinelli – do not get swept up in the crap from the varous democratic surrogates. This is what happened to Romney (although he would not have been a good preisdent – but he would have been better than what we have). Stay on point and on message. Merely point out that Planned Parenthood is merely a business making millions from federally funded abortions, and that Republicans do not want to interfere with anyones decisions reached jointly with their Doctor.

However, it seems we as a culture and a people have forgotten both the value of our freedoms and the values tied to our freedom. I think the problem is both the culture and cultural. Those need to be fixed first.
