Ashley Judd leaning towards running for Senate in Kentucky for some reason

posted at 8:01 pm on February 15, 2013 by Allahpundit

Should we be worried about this? I read this story, about Kentucky Democrats quaking at the idea of having a rich Hollywood uber-liberal at the top of the ticket in bluegrass country, and I thought “Hell no.” Then my eeyorism kicked in and I remembered Mitch McConnell isn’t especially popular and that, in politics, you underestimate a millionaire with high name recognition who’s good on camera at your peril. Then I re-read this old Josh Trevino piece about what Judd is allegedly like around the “little people” and I thought “Landslide.”

Anyway, looks like this thing is happening:

Actress Ashley Judd told influential Democrats in Louisville that she is leaning toward running for U.S. Senate against Mitch McConnell and plans to make her decision by Derby Day (May 6), sources tell WHAS11 News.

Judd dined Thursday night at the home of philanthropist Christy Brown, the widow of Brown-Forman Chairman & CEO Owsley Brown II…

Some strategists also believe that as Judd contemplates her decision, she freezes the field, essentially preventing other potential candidates from jumping in.

A source tell WHAS11′s Joe Arnold that Judd is “meeting with people all over the state” as she contemplates her decision.

The obvious play for Democratic image-makers is to tone her waaaaay down and recast her as some sort of Blue Dog populist who’s into guns. But she can’t sell that. I can’t believe she’d even be willing to try. She’s an abortion warrior; her whole shtick is that she’s a proudly outspoken liberal and feminist. Frankly, I think her smartest move would be to ratchet that up and be the sort of punch-throwing progressive that the left desperately wants Elizabeth Warren to be once she’s more established in the Senate. Realistically, Judd’s best-case scenario is losing by a few points. If it’s between that and going full metal liberal, losing by 15, and becoming a hero-martyr to the left and a mainstay on MSNBC in the process, why not go for the latter? Build a brand. The worst that can happen next year is that she ends up remaining a private citizen but with a much enhanced political profile. Given her movie roles lately, she’s already basically reached the point of being famous for being famous. Might as well use it.

Eeyorish exit question: If this is in the bag, why can’t the Senate minority leader crack 50 percent against her?

As they mock the Constitution, they mock the representative body of the people, by the people and for the people by turning it into some sort of American Idol game…a sideshow, entertainment.

And the law?

What law?

Law?

We don’t need law based on Rights granted to us by our Creator.

Don’t even need that old constitution thing.

Law should be about fairness, feelings, taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves, social justice, making amends for past hurts, real or imagined, and about what is popular, what the people want…

So yeah, sure, let’s start getting our mentally vapid but popular attractive celebrities to run for office…why stop with Ashley Judd? Why not Dikembe Mutumbo? He’s popular. Or Dr. Dre? Beyonce?

The people love that sort of thing…and who cares if legislation is not written well, or even Constitutionally, at least we are passing laws to help the people take care of themselves…and it is sooo cool to be a Senator or Congressman…all the perks, too.

And the hoi polloi will flock to the polls, and elect them one after another…so long as the free stuff keeps rolling out of the trough.

How many elected officials up on the Hill?

Not one statesman among them.

A mere handful of principled representatives on any given day…unless they need a favor from across the aisle.

Should never have wasted my lifetime in service of this “nation.”

Wasted a life paying back my country for the privilege of being here, being a citizen, being allowed to be a free man…unlike a good portion of my ancestors who lived their lives anything but free.

Should have gone into something else, where I could have become rich beyond my wildest dreams of avarice…and had more “dignity.”

She’s, to put it charitably, fragile. McConnell could easily goad and provoke her subtly so she’d stick both feet in it or lose it. He just has to be careful about it so as not to look like a bully.

kim roy on February 15, 2013 at 8:55 PM

She looks very much like Sarah Palin in that photo. And there’s the stories in the linked article that include the tidbits like “I was on a Virgin flight. We won’t fly them again. We were in First Class and they sat us too close to the galley and all I could hear was tink-tink-tink. I told them to stop and they gave me attitude. I cried all the way from LA to London.”

One thing about her run: the double standard would be hilarious.

She’s also not nearly as intelligent as she likes to think she is. Judd’s a deluded narcissist, much like her buddy Obama, who thinks her celebrity graduate degree from Harvard is unassailable proof of her genius. A moderately skilled debater could probably embarrass her pretty thoroughly. The sad thing is, it likely would not make any difference. As Mitt Romney found out, voters in this country don’t really care which candidate is better-informed or makes the better case for their position in debates; the majority of voters will simply choose to vote for whichever candidate promises them the most “free” stuff.

072609

“I promised that we would manage our fish and wildlife for abundance and defend the constitution in doing so. And we have. However, outside political interests just don’t seem to get it. Alaskans need to stick together on this with new leadership. Encourage the new leadership. Stiffen your spine to do what is right for Alaska when the pressure mounts because you will see anti-hunting, anti-Second Amendment “circuses” from Hollywood. And here is how they will do it: tiny, delicate and talented celebrity starlets will use Alaska as a fund raising tool for their anti-Second Amendment causes. Stand strong and remind them that patriots will protect our individual guaranteed right to bear arms. And by the way, in Alaska, we eat, therefore, we hunt – Gov. Sarah Palin.”

Oh yea please run you little nitwit.

Illinidiva on February 15, 2013 at 10:40 PM

It would be more of a challenge for Judd to win in Kentucky, but the Dems could still pull it off. It might involve measures such as them pumping tons of money into the local Tea Party or Libertarian Party to run a stalking horse to siphon off McConnell votes. Or they put Nate Silver out there to run a couple of his models showing that she will win, and then they can run with the inevitability theme and suppress GOP turnout for McConnell. My guess is that it will be a combination of these, plus other measures. There’s lots of union people a short bus ride away in Ohio and Illinois.

It goes without saying that she’ll have the full backing of every state and local media outlet, as well as the entire Dem/Hollywood machine. She could strip naked and pole dance at her campaign stops, and every single media outlet would endorse her anyway. They’ll stop at nothing to be able to claim the scalp of the Senate Minority Leader.

Gator Country on February 15, 2013 at 11:11 PM

I wouldn’t put it past the Dems to (nudge nudge wink wink)help finance/run an “independent conservative” to help split the vote on the right and let her walk away with the win.

22044 on February 16, 2013 at 4:46 AM

McConnell is supposed to be the Republican leader in the Senate. The Senate hasn’t passed a budget in 4 years. How does any leader, of an opposition party, allow that to happen? Now you can sit and complain about Reid not allowing it, about filling up the tree in legislation, and all that other stuff, however leaders find a way to, now only get it done but persuade those with opposing views to join him.

The truth be known, the majority of Republicans liked the idea of no budget. They were allowed to keep a budget, purposely inflated in the first year of Obama’s term, and get automatic increases to spend on projects, all of that without actually putting your name on legislation. Now, you can say that’s not true, but you can’t convince me that, if the Republicans really felt the country needed a budget, they couldn’t have gotten one. There’s a reason here and, if and when the media ever tries to find out what it is, everyone will be surprised (except for me).

bflat879 on February 16, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Al Franken isn’t a good comparison, because he frauded his way into the post against a gutless GOP.

Speaking of which, the disappointing Mitch McConnell deserves to lose because he has had practically zero impact over years of opportunity. He’s more invisible than Boehner.
