I’m an expat currently living in a developing country in SE Asia. Christmas is not widely celebrated here, but the people are certainly familiar with Santa Claus and with an election happening here in the next month or two, I was told by a neighbor that the current government is acting like Santa Claus. She said last month was like Christmas because every family received a one time cash payment for every student that resided in their household and the next week every person that earned under a specific monthly income was given a cash “bonus” by the government. They know their votes are being bought to keep the current administration in power.

Until this last election, my cousin always voted for the Republican presidential candidate and was pretty conservative. Now she is a single mother and thinks of the government as the missing daddy that will help take care of her kid. Since Obama was promising free healthcare, she voted for him in the last election. When we watched the Sotu, she was thrilled when Obama said the government would pay for pre-school. When I asked how he was going to pay for it, she ignored me. She wants the free stuff, but doesn’t want to worry about how it’s paid for. She has an i-phone with games on it for the kid. She’s got a big screen tv, buys toys for her kid every time they go to the store, eats out, but wants someone else to pay for his schooling. I don’t know how to convince her that government freebies is not the answer. This new gimme generation will ruin this country.

The Marriage and Religion Research Institute released statistics earlier this week on the benefits of an intact married family in which children grow up with both birth parents. From Influence on Public Policy Metrics:

Public policy assumes, and needs no persuasion, that education attainment is a good to be promoted. The same assumption does not hold for family intactness. However: -Family intactness always has a beneficial influence on the outcomes measured. -Family intactness is roughly as important as high school education and more important than college education in influencing outcomes of public policy interest.

Now considering that family intactness is as beneficial as education, if not more so, in influencing outcomes of public policy interest, don’t you think supporting and defending marriage and family structure should be a higher priority for government than, say, new educational spending and regulations? And don’t you think discussing the importance of a mom and dad who love each other and are committed to each other in marriage should take center stage in a State of the Union message? And don’t you think logical public policy would entail doing everything possible to support marriage and parents? What better way to actually uphold that phrase in the Constitution’s Preamble—promote the general welfare? And don't you think Republicans ought to have the sense to point these things out even when Democrats don't! Just a few thoughts. Happy Valentine's Day!
