Jack Lew: I had no idea my money was even in the Cayman Islands

posted at 8:01 pm on February 13, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

I point this out, not because I think that Lew’s erstwhile Cayman Island holdings in and of themselves should be a discrediting factor in his nomination to replace Tim Geithner as head of the Treasury Department; again, if politicians are looking for someone or something to blame for wealthy people looking to save more of their own money by moving it to offshore accounts, then maybe they should start with our ridiculously uncompetitive and bulky tax code. Quite blaming the symptoms, people, and try blaming the disease instead.

I point this out, because of the spectacular showcase it provides into the mind-boggling moral hypocrisy being practiced by our oh-so-enlightened president. Apparently, Mitt Romney’s large financial portfolio, which included some offshore accounts, was an offense so ethically egregious as to disqualify him from presidential legitimacy — at least that’s certainly the way Team Obama told it.

Miraculously, however, President Obama somehow neglected to apply the same tax-related scruples in hand-selecting particular members of his second-term Cabinet. Like, oh, I don’t know — the one that directs the administration of the U.S. money supply and tax collection, or whatever.

The White House would never deign to display any sort of embarrassment about their moral laxity, of course, but somebody should at least highlight the blatant hypocrisy — and Senate Republicans took a moment to do so during Lew’s otherwise pretty drama-free confirmation hearing on Wednesday afternoon.

He “didn’t know” that his money was being housed in the Cayman Islands? That’s odd; Team Obama didn’t let Mitt Romney get away with that one, no sir!

Never knew he got a $944.518 tax-payer paid bonus from Citigroup after we had to bail them out…because guys like Jack Lew were the very cause and root of the financial collapse.

BTW, I was thinking about this today after listening to Rush talking about how the praise-be-unto-him President will not be held accountable EVER for his failures.

Why not shift the focus away from Obama personally and LET HIM be above the fray, but go after and destroy politically all of his minions. Focus on Pelosi and her negatives, focus on Harry Reid and his scandals. What if the opposition said “yeah, that Obama he means so well but gosh darn it, his EPA chief is just destroying the country with regulations and such.” What if the conservatives were to start saying “You know Obama is such a stand up guy but that Jack Lew and Chuck Hagel they are just horrible picks and really won’t serve our Affirmative action President well. Let’s help him pick the right people.

What if someone started in and the meme got to be “We know the President wants America to be energy independent and he WANTS to approve the Keystone XL pipeline so why don’t we just get the EPA and the Energy departments out of the way and get this approved………do it for the President.”

4 more years is a long time to let this guy get away with his Socialism. And we know the gop have no cajones to oppose HIM personally. Anyone think they MIGHT, MIGHT, MIGHT be able to use this line of attack successfully?

Great idea Pappy, but can you see the LSM actually picking up that meme and running with it?

Not even Fox would.

Maybe Rush or Levin…

Yeah, just like Charlie Rangel “forgot” about the 1/2 million sitting in his bank account.

I aspire to one day have so much money that I can genuinely “forget” that it is stashed in the Cayman Islands.

So let me get this straight. Obama has nominated a person for Treasury Secretary who has no idea where his own money is located. … and this is the person that is being tasked with knowing and overseeing where the nation’s money is located and how it is disbursed. Got it.

Are we the only people who see a problem with this?

AZfederalist on February 13, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Liar.

TX-96 on February 13, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Well, giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he’s honest… if he doesn’t know where his own money is, should he really be Treasury Secretary?

On the plus side, if he didn’t know the money was there, then he won’t miss it… maybe he should donate it to the IRS.

Yes it does matter, whether it’s Lew, Romney or whoever. It’s an obvious attempt to hide money and avoid taxes.

Dr. ZhivBlago on February 13, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Simple question.

Do we really want this to appear on all of our currency?

Have we any graphologists or signature analysts in our ranks?

Lew’s signature seems a bit abnormal from a psychiatric perspective.

He “didn’t know” that his money was being housed in the Cayman Islands?

Mr Citibank is lying.

“This is a corporation that finds itself in financial distress due to recklessness and greed. Under these circumstances, it’s hard to understand how derivative traders at AIG warranted any bonuses, much less $165 million in extra pay. I mean, how do they justify this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat? [I've asked Treasury Secretary Geithner to] pursue every single legal avenue to block these bonuses and make the American taxpayers whole. It’s about our fundamental values. All across the country, there are people who are working hard and meeting their responsibilities every single day, without the benefit of government bailouts or multimillion-dollar bonuses. You’ve got a bunch of small-business people here who are struggling just to keep their credit line open. And all they ask is that everyone, from Main Street to Wall Street to Washington, play by the same rules. That is an ethic that we have to demand. I’m choked up with anger here.”

- President Barack Obama, 16 March 2009

He wasn’t “choked up with anger” when Jack Lew accepted a $1 million bonus after Citibank was bailed out.

The Cayman Islands issue is a distraction essentially. Powerline’s John Hinderaker and Sen.Sessions make a substantial case and amply identify Jack Lew as a brazen liar.

Joey24007 on February 13, 2013 at 9:48 PM

SO, either he is so careless with his own money, but O wants us to think he is going to do a wonderful job of keeping track of our tax monies … or he thinks we are so obliviously stupid as to believe him.

Both/either are legitimate disqualifying factors.

Until the Senate votes down incompetents, crooks and liars, we are going to continue to have nominees lie to Congress and treat their job duties with the contempt the Senate has insisted is OK for Democratic appointees.

jhnone on February 13, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Jack Lew: I had no idea my money was even in the Cayman Islands

Uh…..if he doesn’t know where his money is, can he explain why he should be put in charge of ours?

BobMbx on February 13, 2013 at 10:32 PM

If someone stole that money, I bet he’d suddenly remember every cent.

Christien on February 13, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Another idiot? Approve. Nobody is interested in what the Treasury does or thinks. As long as the boy-king is admiring himself, nothing of consequence will be achieved by his underlings.

virgo on February 14, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Fast talking greasy fellow. Not just his hair either.

Our president sure is a swell guy, ain’t he?

What a daisy!

And he sure can pick ‘em!

Sherman1864 on February 14, 2013 at 4:52 AM

So Lew is either a liar or he had no idea where his money is. Either one disqualifies him to be the nation’s Treasury Secretary.

Which means that in our now fully Orwellian nation he will probably be almost unanimously approved by the Senate.

farsighted on February 14, 2013 at 7:33 AM

Why does BO hate our money so much that he goes out of his was to hire idiots for Treasury? Timmy G didn’t comprehend the taxing system of his money & apparently Lew doesn’t concern himself with his own investments. Do we really want such doofus heads in charge of our money? Is that the best BO can find?

katiejane on February 14, 2013 at 8:27 AM

The last Treasury Secretary couldn’t do his taxes so what’s so shocking about this?

Pardonme on February 14, 2013 at 9:15 AM

OK, Jack, that’s good enough for me. Someone bring out the rubber stamp for Jack. What a joke of an admin. I want someone as Sec of Treas that knows where the money is and not just at the mint.

Kissmygrits on February 14, 2013 at 9:47 AM

Lew shrewdly claims only that he did not know the address of the investment firm; he does not claim he did not know it was in the Cayman Islands.
