CNN: Could Rubio sipping that water be a career-ender?

posted at 7:21 pm on February 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

And so, at long last, American media reaches peak moron. I’m just thankful that Newsbusters was there to capture it. They’ve waited years for this moment and now, finally, it’s here. Cherish it, guys.

CNN’s excuse? Satire, of course. The sort of satire for which CNN is world renowned.

“We are joking, it was a tease,” CNN Public Relations wrote to POLITICO, via Twitter.

“It was simply a tease (posing a question) leading up to a segment with our political contributors—when Wolf [Blitzer] specifically said no one thinks this will be a career ender,” CNN spokesperson Edie Emery later told POLITICO via email.

Judge for yourself whether Blitz was playing for laughs. I confess, as I was writing this post this morning, I thought maybe I was being the teensiest bit unfair in indicting the media for peeing themselves over Rubio’s quick-sip. Sure, they had devoted thousands of times more coverage to it than it deserved, but they weren’t really “taking it seriously.” Then I saw the AP’s article, and then I saw this. Vindication.

Rubio’s still having fun with it too:

Exit question: Is this headline set the media’s version of “cleverness” or just a sly way to impugn him to really, really low-information voters?

CNN: Could Rubio sipping that water be a career-ender?

When Obama joined the Socialist New Party on 11 January 1996, did it end his career?

Surely, taking a sip of water, as Obama has done often, is not nearly the career-ender that joining a Socialist party should have been.

Rubio handling the childish criticism like a true man and statesman. I wish I could say the same for Obama but unfortunately, he apparently does not comprehend how to respond to opposition without sounding immature.

Gee, you think the media would ever “satire” Obama? No? Nah…

d1carter on February 13, 2013 at 7:26 PM

They weren’t joking. I think the bias has gotten so bad that the newsrooms of CNN, MSNBC, ..etc aren’t able to tell when one is jokingly attacking the GOP or being serious.

In a sane and rational world…that sip of water would signify nothing except that the speaker had a dry tongue or lips…not a big deal. That is why there is a water pitcher in the well of the House and Senate, and in the House of Commons, as well.

But in the present world, ruled by the Acolytes of Saul Alinsky, never underestimate the power of Rule 5.

You have influenced untold millions that its now OK to imbibe bottled water in public…

Low-information voters? You mean average voters, no?

Anyway, in the past how many times have we said, “Don’t worry, no one’s going to believe that” when the left made some scurrilous claim about Bush or Cheney or Romney? Well, it’s time to start treating every obvious smear as a serious threat.

The drinking of the water was not the problem.

Can anyone honestly say it wasn’t awkward how he did it? He mannerism doing so was weird, and his eyes looked like “oh shit. Can I do this?”

That said, if anything he said in the speech was that memorable or game changing, this water thing would be forgotten. The media would be attacking him on his words.

But his speech was boilerplate “I grew up blah blah blah, my parents were immigrants, hard work, blah blah blah.

It was Jindalesque in that this speech just didn’t work.

What you learn from advertising is that tarnishing or promoting a brand has little to do with “facts”. Putting the picture of Rubio up sipping puts him in a bad light and pondering comically the line “career-ender” is really negative advertising. These people are in TV and the know ONE thing more than an other is that if you keep associating things together they become part of the mindset of the typically low information voter.

Conan on February 13, 2013 at 8:05 PM

It wasn’t a joke. It a test balloon. Remember: Everything you see in the news, except for MAYBE Fox News, is presented in a manner that is good for Democrats and bad for Republicans. They are laying the groundwork for his destruction prior to 2016. Van Jones said it earlier today that Rubio is to be feared by the Left – and the Left is busy doing what they do to ruin they opponents on the Right. This was a test balloon to see how warm the waters are with Rubio. The fact they quickly changed their tune to “It was a joke…” shows that he is hot and that is good.

So who should we pander/cater to first? At least most Cubans I know want to return to thier homeland…at least when its free of the Bearded one and his Quasi-Marxist stooges.

Not to mention, Cubans were screwed royaly AND recently with that whole silly Bay of Pig krefullfe…btw, who’s watch did that happen on again?

Mexico, while not a superpower isn’t exactly going out of its way to at least achieve fiscal parity with Canada, let alone any other S.A country.

Mexico has plenty in natural resources that would allow it to achieve an improved Cost of Living for it’s citizens that would make both the US/MEX border issues nearly vanish *overnight*.

the idiote gope looks at “hispanics” as if they are a homogeneous blob.

Well, I don’t blame *just* the GOP for that: That’s years of the 60′s mentality of “Black/Brown Power” movement that had such fun lovin understanding groups like the FALN, La Raza, etc, that want to claim anyone of Spanish Speaking (but not always of Spanish decent) citizenry.

if roobio runs in 2016 the percentage of the hispanic vote will decrease. bank on it.

renalin on February 13, 2013 at 7:56 PM

If Rubio counts on JUST being put in office by *only* Hispanics, then I agree, it won’t happen. Just like Obama wasn’t put into office by *just* Blacks….or Hillary couldn’t be elected by *just* women.

It will take, by consent or by omission of the truth, to elect anyone in office. No one ethnic group has a lock on it, and to portray it otherwise, regardless of your political stripe is foolishness…

iceman1960 on February 13, 2013 at 8:14 PM

My support for Rubio has been on the wane for quite some time. For various reasons. Some of you may have seen my comments made last evening and again this morning. I made them through the eyes of one of our least mature and most shallow thinkers. nonpartisan. I spoofed Rubio and Pauls speeches this way to point out what I thought would be the story of the day. As it turns out I was only half right. I will just add this, from my perspective, not nonpartisans. The optics for Rubio during his speech last evening were horrible. He did in fact look bad. Solid points were being made up to the college tuition section of his attempt. The wheels then appeared to be coming off a bit for him. Not sure why in what could have been a pre-recorded speech such a snafu was made. Bottom line the optics were not great. However the way in which much of the media has decided to take this up has reminded me quite a bit of the Palinization of a decent candidate and possible Presidential contender. The media is no doubt searching to shine the least favorable light on Rubio. What seems to us as petty, is all they need to run the narrative they seek. If this one doesn’t stick they will try the next one, and so on.

Granted, I was snookered by another Fla politician in the recent past…but I can’t really see comparing Florida to, say, Chicago.

As far as I see it, Rubio could have a stellar career leading to the White House if he can avoid these pitfalls:

1) Overexposure

2) Skeletons in the closet
