Oops: WaPo retracts report Sarah Palin is going to Al Jazeera Update: Sarah snarks back

posted at 1:21 pm on February 12, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

What started as a condescending “cautionary tale” about Sarah Palin’s mixing of celebrity and politics quickly became a cautionary tale about mixing contempt for Sarah Palin with desperation for the traffic her name will generate.

Suzi Parker of the Washington Post‘s She the People blog reported Tuesday that Palin, in an attempt to “stay relevant,” would join the Al Jazeera America network, to “reach millions of devoutly religious people.” The only problem is the report comes from “The Daily Currant,” a parody site whose lead story today is “Catholic Church considering Jerry Sandusky for Pope.” A sampling of the original “report:”

After leaving Fox News, Palin said she was hoping to reach a broader audience with her message. When contacted by phone, Palin said Al Jazeera – with its extensive international network – offered her the best opportunity to broadcast to millions of people.

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin said. “But I met with the folks at Al-JaJizzraa (sic) and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

Now, the original item has this correction appended to the top:

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported that Sarah Palin planned to contribute to the Al Jazeera America news network.

The article clips out the erroneous bits, but John Hayward has reproduced them as they were, with the silly quote and all:

Late last week Al Jazeera America announced the former vice-presidential candidate would be joining their news network.

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin told the Web site The Daily Currant. “But I met with the folks at Al-Jazeera and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

E.M. Zanotti offers the upside:

The good news is, the Washington Post is still interested in digging up the hard news on failed Vice Presidential candidates from five years ago. They’re really that tenacious in their reporting. And you have to be in this day and age of the Internet and technology and smart phones and whatever. You really have to be at the top of your game on things that happened in 2008. They are important to the face of political discourse in America. And if you stop reporting them, Julianne Moore will have absolutely no reason to do a sequel to Game Change.

And, they’re dogged about it. More than an hour after other media reported the mistake, the Washington Post Twitter feed sent this out:

Iowahawk takes the downside:

Update: Sarah Palin responds:

Mitt lost, but at least he stopped those tax hikes on the rich. At least he stopped that, and that was a central- immovable theme to his campaign for all to rally around, and the majority of Americans did not want to see the taxes on the rich increase- right?

He didn’t cave on those taxes for the rich, which had he caved on that, would have been a big turn off for voters.

His campaign at least stopped those tax hikes from hitting the rich.

I think she could’ve and would’ve won.

It’s a shame.

LevinFan on February 12, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Probably not. Most of Romney’s conservative challengers were forced into a war on two fronts with both the state run media as well as our supposed “conservative” media. They were buried in a mix of across the board negative press and Romney’s big donor money. It’s almost impossible for an insurgent to win under a condition where they have no friendly media and limited money.

And even if she’d eked out a primary victory, I don’t know as the “conservative” media would have backed her or whether they’d have continued going after her in revenge. Given that the GOP seems willing to sacrifice seats to prevent Tea Party wins, I am not sure I believe they’d have really united behind Palin in the general, especially not after they invested so much in hating her.

In retrospect, given how candidates like Perry, Gingrich, and Cain were ruthlessly destroyed, I think her decision to stay out was a good one. That being said, I find it unlikely she runs again. I sure as heck wouldn’t.

Now, Palin is no Reagan, but she’d make a great Presidential candidate if she ever decided to run.

sauldalinsky on February 12, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Reagan wasn’t really Reagan until he took the office. Palin has what’s missing in the elitist ruling class GOP, honesty, integrity, and a willingness to attack her own party when it’s going against its stated principles and the constitution.
She’s moral, pro-life, pro-family, pro responsibility, pro-sound economy, pro small government. She’s economically savvy, has the courage to speak the truth, unlike most opportunistic politicians in either party. That is why they hate her and fear her.
I hope she runs, though what America needs more than a fearless leader is a brigade of exorcists!

The enormity of what Sarah faced, is emodied in the election of marco rubio, as the de facto nominee, by elitist progressives that run the republican party.

the pain is yet to come. while rubio was cowering under his bed, Sarah screamed “barack the wealth spreader” “death panels” ” Secure our borders

when the 47% really start to feel the pain. Sarah will be there.

renalin on February 12, 2013 at 6:11 PM

when the 47% really start to feel the pain. Sarah will be there.

renalin on February 12, 2013 at 6:11 PM

one of the problems that Mitt made and most of the GOPe including Rush im sorry to say is that most of those 47% don’t want to be takers. They are caught between two forces and are pawns. Mitt should have went after that 47% by promising them oppurtunity by declaring that crony capitalism is the root of the problem and that everyone would have a fair shake and oppurtunity. that having money doesn’t buy you connections and oppurtunity but your work effort will. It is what reagan tapped into. I see Gov Palin taps into that feeling also. The GOPe has bought instead into this false narraitive that the “masses” just want an easy ride and will steal their wealth.

I think that once the bloom is off the rose and people understand government is the problem not the solution then people like Palin can once again preach personal responsibility, morals, law and order. But it has to be rooted out of the top 5% of the nations as much as the 47% of the bottom half of the country.

The middle class work ethic must be reimposed for this country to flourish again and to do that there must be a wholesale cleaning of not only the takers at the bottom but those at the top also.

Thanks. I’ve yet to find another national figure worth defending. Most just say what they think we want to hear then go and do whatever the hell they want once reelected. So I can’t summon the energy to defend those type of people. And while I have a couple items in the politcal realm that grabs my interest most will never be given the light of day because the elites think only of their power not returning power to the people. Mitt lost was easy to see coming for me at least. I ended up voting for him for the lesser of two evils but I never once wasted time thinking he had a chance to win.

In short I would post more often but their just doesn’t seem much reason too anymore. I’m hoping 2013-2014 changes that.

platypus on February 12, 2013 at 6:38 PM

oh Mitt was a good man just a terrible candidate and yes you can have both. Mitt simply lacked what was needed to win. Personaly I think he lacked ideology or a deep seated belief in things so that he was at the whim of polls instead of his gut. and while he most likely would be better than Obama I don’t think we would see much differenc ein the long run since most of Mitt’s positions lined up with Obama’s on things like healthcare and the role of government. just like we haven’t really seen much difference in Bush and Obama policies. hell we had Chenny agreeing with Obama’s drone policy yesterday. I don’t think Mitt would have been as agreessive with government power as Obama and tha tis why I thought him the lesser of two evils.

Doomberg on February 12, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Talk radio would’ve supported Sarah. Especially Levin. Rush was always friendly to Sarah as well and Hannity would’ve been all in to support her in the General election.

Foxnews wouldn’t have done her any favors in the primary but I don’t think they would sabotage her chances against maobama.

Santorum almost beat Romney when he had no recognition going into the primaries. Given that, I think Sarah could’ve won with all the grassroots support.

What we really needed to beat maobama was someone with some balls to call out his BS, to not stand for the personal attacks, and to be able to frame things in a way to appeal to the American people. Sarah fits all those qualities.

I still say she could’ve won.

I hope that one day she does run and doesn’t take a defeatist attitude that it can’t be done.

LOL. The Obama-supporting troll supports Palin.

You idiot Palin worshipers have found common cause with the Obama-supporting internet trolls.

Sarah Palin is a loser who only helps Obama. Democrats are not afraid of this lightweight.

That’s RIGHT all you dumb “Palin worshipers”. Just wait till Romney wins the nomination, and shows y’all how a real Conservative can kick Obama’s tail.

Contrary to what he says, Sean Hannity is primarily a Republican, not a conservative. Look how quickly he embraced Comprehensive Immigration Reform once other Republicans did. He does whatever Roger Ailes tells him.

In the Detroit market, Hannity comes on the same station right after Limbaugh. Limbaugh is interesting to listen to. Hannity uses talking points as a crutch, uses one cliche after another and constantly repeats himself.

I stand with Sarah!

renalin on February 12, 2013 at 9:20 PM

The only problem is the report comes from “The Daily Currant,” a parody site whose lead story today is “Catholic Church considering Jerry Sandusky for Pope.”

Because a priest raping little boys is hilarious. Got it.

JimLennon on February 12, 2013 at 1:49 PM

The Daily Currant is left-wing. That’s the sort of crap you have to expect from them.

Gelsomina on February 12, 2013 at 9:21 PM

Sarah Palin needs to have a sense of humor. She is a walking joke, after all.

Sigh. We conservatives can do a lot better than Sarah Palin.

bluegill on February 12, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Not really………. who do you have in mind: John McCain? Mitt Rommney? No – not really.

williamg on February 12, 2013 at 9:28 PM

I’m surprised you are commenting here i figured you would be getting ready for Pres Ropmney’s SOTU speech tonight…..oh wait. In politics having claws is a plus not a negative and as Mitt should be able to tell you having balls also helps. Lucky for us Palin has both. Sad for you Mitt had neither.

I wonder if she can name a newspaper that she reads yet.

Politricks on February 12, 2013 at 5:29 PM

What a stupid comment. Only the ill-informed are still buying into that line of attack on Palin. I don’t regularly read any newspapers either, but can find all the information I need through more reputable sources. I read the headlines of the NYT at the coffee shop for a laugh at how well they manage to spin the news to fit the agenda of the editors. (And no, I don’t watch Fox News either, don’t have time for TV). Really, newspaper reading as a measure of intelligence! They rank lower than Wikipedia as a credible source of information in most cases.

con_in_socal on February 12, 2013 at 10:04 PM

That still cracks me up.

ddrintn on February 12, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Ah my good friend ddrintn – seems like you were saying similar things about Gov Palin at one point, hmmm?
Anyway, I’m happy that you are happy in seeing Obama re-elected – you were instrumental in helping us keep Romney out of the White House — how’s that working out for you so far?

Amazing just how many morons, lobotomized morons at that, for some reason think that Ryan is a math genius and “conservative”. This same math genius who believes that $400 Billion is somehow equal to $1.4 Trillion. And countless more morons who do not see an obvious error in this simple equation. Ryan is Romney Lite. As is Rubio.

only the Pope and dorner have more hits than Sarah.

it hasn’t even freakin’ even begun yet.

renalin on February 12, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Sarah Palin can’t even get through a single tv interview without tripping all over her words. She is the least competent, most embarrassing politician who is being talked about as a potential presidential candidate. Democrats would want nothing more than for Palin to be the nominee.

Make no mistake about this: IF PALIN WERE THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE, THE DEMOCRAT WOULD WIN IN A LANDSLIDE BIGGER THAN REAGAN’S 1984 VICTORY.

Sarah Palin is a gimmicky, shallow, ill-prepared lightweight who was in way over her head in 2008, and she hasn’t improved at all. Democrat and Republican voters alike know this well. Some of her cultists here cheer her every display of ignorance and make excuses for her every embarrassing mistake. These cultists need to listen to Mark Levin and sometimes Glenn Beck in order to know what to think about anything.

bluegill on February 12, 2013 at 10:49 PM

renalin on February 12, 2013 at 10:40 PM

You poor, poor Palin cultists. You thought she was going to run in 2012. She led you on and, since she knew she couldn’t cut it, she stayed on the sidelines where she could let other people write her Facebook posts. She was always too afraid to appear in any challenging tv interview situations. Now you poor Palin worshipers are convinced once again that she will come riding in to save the day. Sorry, guys, but people regard Palin as a buffoonish joke. She quit before even finishing a single term as governor. Palin is better suited as a potential sidekick for a radio host like Glenn Beck. There is nothing presidential about this woman.

bluegill on February 12, 2013 at 10:59 PM

Bluegill, you have to be putting us all on. No one could tirelessly spout such over the top hyperbole and really mean it. You have to be putting on a show. It seems like there can’t be any other explanation for your insanity every Palin thread that pops up here at HA. Even Buy Danish isn’t this buffoonish in her PDS.
