Oops: WaPo retracts report Sarah Palin is going to Al Jazeera Update: Sarah snarks back

posted at 1:21 pm on February 12, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

What started as a condescending “cautionary tale” about Sarah Palin’s mixing of celebrity and politics quickly became a cautionary tale about mixing contempt for Sarah Palin with desperation for the traffic her name will generate.

Suzi Parker of the Washington Post‘s She the People blog reported Tuesday that Palin, in an attempt to “stay relevant,” would join the Al Jazeera America network, to “reach millions of devoutly religious people.” The only problem is the report comes from “The Daily Currant,” a parody site whose lead story today is “Catholic Church considering Jerry Sandusky for Pope.” A sampling of the original “report:”

After leaving Fox News, Palin said she was hoping to reach a broader audience with her message. When contacted by phone, Palin said Al Jazeera – with its extensive international network – offered her the best opportunity to broadcast to millions of people.

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin said. “But I met with the folks at Al-JaJizzraa (sic) and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

Now, the original item has this correction appended to the top:

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported that Sarah Palin planned to contribute to the Al Jazeera America news network.

The article clips out the erroneous bits, but John Hayward has reproduced them as they were, with the silly quote and all:

Late last week Al Jazeera America announced the former vice-presidential candidate would be joining their news network.

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin told the Web site The Daily Currant. “But I met with the folks at Al-Jazeera and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

E.M. Zanotti offers the upside:

The good news is, the Washington Post is still interested in digging up the hard news on failed Vice Presidential candidates from five years ago. They’re really that tenacious in their reporting. And you have to be in this day and age of the Internet and technology and smart phones and whatever. You really have to be at the top of your game on things that happened in 2008. They are important to the face of political discourse in America. And if you stop reporting them, Julianne Moore will have absolutely no reason to do a sequel to Game Change.

And, they’re dogged about it. More than an hour after other media reported the mistake, the Washington Post Twitter feed sent this out:

Iowahawk takes the downside:

Update: Sarah Palin responds:

Inside sources report that the new papal conclave is prepared to consider Sarah Palin as the next pope. Skeptics point out that Sarah is not a Catholic, but in lieu of the fact that she is one of the few politicians to defend life, support the Principle of Subsidiarity against big government, as well as courageously speaking the uncomfortable truth, she apparently has a head start on several liberal bishops in the USCCB who have already been seen to be grooming their staffs for a potential move to Rome.
Sarah has already denied such an ambition as Pope, but others speak of her as a potential candidate, simply because she is a known advocate of wearing cardinal red as clasic decor.

Heck, it could be worse. The Daily Current is more reliable than Media Matters.

portlandon on February 12, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Oh, she’s been here all along. You just have to read as many of the threads here as possible.

Speaking of Threads, our resident comedy relief (chump) seems to be especially fond of throwing her name into threads that have absolutely nothing to do with her. In a Hillary! thread a couple of weeks ago, I asked him what Hillary’s qualifications were to be the junior Senator from New York. His response? Palin quit halfway thru her term as Alaska Governor.

Rent-Free, indeed.

Journalism used to involve fact checking. These days it is all about the snarky hash tag and even snarkier but unoriginal blog name like “She the People.” Says all you really need to know about the worth of Suzi Parker or her left-wing rants.

changer1701 on February 12, 2013 at 2:44 PM

Because people need to understand that it is this type of give and take that we need to win elections. Not poll tested crap. how long did it take Mitt to respond to the Obama attacks over and over and overf again. How many voters did that lack of response turn away. How many times did Bush fail to respond to the idiotmedia and it cost us the House the Senate and the WH. And because out of most national figures Palin is the only one that has not only sees attacks as they pop up on the radar but has enough balls to fire back and give as good if not better than they dished at her. That’s why not just leave it at that. We lost becaus eMitt was too much of a coward to hit back.

Since the snark tag is missing I’m left to think you are sincere.

Really? She gets lied about regarding Al Jazeera and she can’t have some fun poking at them? You’re going to get petty about that?

Considering she’s now a private citizen, when did it become her duty to barf out opinions publicly about ELECTED officials?

For all those that b!tch and moan about Palin not running this is why? So-called “republicans” and “conservatives” stabbing anyone of quality in the back for idiotic reasons. It’s not enough that she’s had to fight off the media and liberals, but now our own side.

rubio’s plan is a non starter. It will never see the light of day. why waste time with that but since you ask where does Mitt stand on Rubio’s plan orRand PAul or any of the other politicians that are smart enough not to get into a power play with the base of the GOP party over something that will in all liklihood never be given the time of day as long as Reid controls the senate. rubio’s play for the latinos is a rookie mistake by a politican that will end up costing him in 2016 if he chooses to run.

KBird on February 12, 2013 at 3:27 PM

When you hate someone so much, beyond all reason, you are incapable of granting them even the smallest amount of the benefit of doubt.

Suzi’s hatred of Palin was so strong that she had absolutely not one second’s hesitation in believing that Palin would a) not know how to pronounce Al Jazeera (the pronuncation as “Al-JaJizzraa” would have tipped off any 14 year old boy chuckling at that poor excuse of a joke, much less a journolist not blinded by hate) and b) think that Palin would have no idea what the Al Jazeera network consisted of or stood for.

Anyone not blinded by hate wouldn’t need a fact-checker, they would have seen the whole story as bullnonsense and moved on.

Romney was true to Romney form.

In 1994 Romney was leading in the Senate Race over Ted Kennedy. Then, in September, Newt announced “The Contract With America,” and dynamics all over the U.S. Changed.

When a Reporter asked Mitt about the Contract Mitt did as Mitt does, he answered, “That’s the House, I’m running for the Senate.”

He then compounded his No boldness play it safe campaign by disparaging the Contract in the Debate with Kennedy. No way Kennedy was going to pin that one on him.

The farther Mitt distanced himself from the Contract, the lower he sank in the polls.

And in a watershed year for Republicans, romney lost to Kennedy.

To prove how little he learned from 1994, Romney distanced himself from the Tea Party in 2012.

Romney is as Romney does!(with no apologies to Forrest Gump.)

jaydee_007 on February 12, 2013 at 4:16 PM

for those that notice such things. the response time by Palin to this developing story was very quick. Unlike say Mitt having to wait and see how the polls told him to handle this type of problem…waiting days to respond with a lame come back. Palin fired back within hours of the story hitting the airwaves and bbyways and she did it without a m illion dollar campaign appratus. imagine that.

Too bad she didn’t run.

I know the GOPe was against her but that didn’t stop her from taking them on in Alaska.

I think she could’ve and would’ve won.

It’s a shame.

LevinFan on February 12, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Sarah Palin is my president.

CrustyB on February 12, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Since the snark tag is missing I’m left to think you are sincere.

Really? She gets lied about regarding Al Jazeera and she can’t have some fun poking at them? You’re going to get petty about that?

Considering she’s now a private citizen, when did it become her duty to barf out opinions publicly about ELECTED officials?

For all those that b!tch and moan about Palin not running this is why? So-called “republicans” and “conservatives” stabbing anyone of quality in the back for idiotic reasons. It’s not enough that she’s had to fight off the media and liberals, but now our own side.

Anyone who needs reminding on why she didn’t run here ya be.

kim roy on February 12, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I realize it would’ve been a tough fight but I know you and I along with million of good conservatives would’ve volunteered to help her.

Would’ve it have been better to have that fight to try to save the country than to not run and not have the fight at all?

LevinFan on February 12, 2013 at 4:21 PM

It’s a shame.

LevinFan on February 12, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Yes, indeed.

BoxHead1 on February 12, 2013 at 4:48 PM

Journalism used to involve fact checking. These days it is all about the snarky hash tag and even snarkier but unoriginal blog name like “She the People.” Says all you really need to know about the worth of Suzi Parker or her left-wing rants.

Happy Nomad on February 12, 2013 at 2:44 PM

.
Today’s journalism is about advancing the ultimate agenda of the Progressives.

If telling the truth advances the agenda, they’ll tell the truth.

If telling the truth obstructs the agenda, they’ll first try to ignore it. If they can’t ignore it, they’ll LIE.

In today’s world of journalism, it’s all that “cut-’n'-dry.”

You make it sound like she might be ‘suicidal’. Uhhh … is she?

listens2glenn on February 12, 2013 at 4:55 PM

Well, if this is the only way Sarah Palin can get her name in the headlines these days, then I guess it’s better than nothing. The woman is a walking punchline.

Seriously, we conservatives can do better than a divisive, incompetent lightweight like Sarah Palin.

Hehehe.

Obviously at the WaPo no one is in charge. Remind me not to read that one when I am finished not reading the NYT and the Boston Globe.

Sure, it is allegedly fake, but how do we really know she didn’t say that? ;-) Sounds just like her to me.

Actually, I knew it was fake as soon as I saw the proper sentence structure. Sarah Palin has trouble putting together complete sentences. The poor thing. She tries. Now that she has been fired by FOXNews, I wonder if she will appear as a sidekick on the Glenn Beck show.

Dear Lord. Your jealousy of her knows no bounds.

kingsjester on February 12, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Just a little reminder to all of you so-called true conservatives who worship Palin: Sarah Palin supports amnesty, and her position on immigration (insofar as she can articulate one) is almost identical to Rubio’s.

The woman is a joke, and the people who cultists her are an embarrassment to conservatives.

bluegill on February 12, 2013 at 5:09 PM
