Gallup: Obama only gets positive marks on national defense

posted at 8:41 am on February 12, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Supposedly, Barack Obama is enjoying a second honeymoon after winning a new term in office, and that may be true in terms of personal ratings.  On the issues, though, Obama finds himself mostly in the doghouse.  In a poll of general-population adults by Gallup, Obama only gets above 50% in one area — national defense — and is underwater on every other issue (via Weasel Zippers and Instapundit):

President Obama earns a 39% job approval rating for his handling of the economy, similar to his ratings on the issue one year ago. Among domestic issues, Obama’s rating on the economy is above only his 31% rating for handling the federal deficit. Across nine issues, Americans give Obama his highest approval ratings for handling national defense (53%), followed by foreign affairs and immigration, each at 46%.

If President Obama focuses on the economy in his fourth State of the Union address Tuesday night, as news reports indicate he will do, he will be dealing with an area in which the American public gives him relatively low performance ratings. The president’s 39% rating on handling the economy is essentially the same as the 38% from this time last year, although lower than the ratings of 45% and 44% he received just before and just after last November’s presidential election. Obama received his lowest rating on the economy (26%) in August 2011, in the aftermath of the debt ceiling fight in Washington. Obama earned his highest economic rating, 59%, in February 2009 — in the first measure after he took office.

Weasel Zippers focuses on Obama’s ratings on gun issues, which are upside-down by double digits, 42/54.  That should be a significant warning signal to other Democrats who won’t benefit from Obama’s personal likability.  If Obama loses a majority of gen-pop adults after having the media participate in the national hysteria over so-called “assault weapons” for nearly two months, there won’t be much hope for red-state Democrats like Mark Pryor, or perhaps even purple-state Democrats like Al Franken, who won’t be garnering much nice-guy cred.

But that’s hardly the only problem area for Obama.  After having won a battle with Republicans over hiking taxes on the wealthy, one might expect that he’d get a boost on that issue.  Instead, he’s in even worse shape on taxes than on guns, 41/57, sixteen points under water.  As Gallup reports in its analysis, it gets even worse on the economy (39/60) and the budget deficit (31/65), two issues that Obama will have to discuss in at least some detail in tonight’s State of the Union speech.

This isn’t a honeymoon.  It looks more like double secret probation.  Obama had better reconsider the notion of political capital as he approaches his big speech tonight.

Actually that surprises me not at all. You figure the low-information voters who keep Obama’s ratings propped up are the ones who have no clue what’s going on overseas. As far as they’re concerned, Obama is the guy who got bin Laden and ended the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. You think they have any idea what’s going on in Egypt, Syria, or Iran? Or what happened in Benghazi?

nyclakerfan on February 12, 2013 at 8:59 AM

I’m willing to be that the rat-eared wonder does not have positive marks on national defense if you filter out the greedy stupid people who support him and only ask those who know a little something about national security issues.

Look, the man has been no friend to the military and treated the troops like crap, cut vital progams, and wasted billions on “green energy” projects on military bases and platforms. The only thing he likes about the military is that they make great props when he wants to look “Presidential” at some fundraising/campaign event.

But soon even the greedy stupid people will see the truth. Sequestration is coming and it was his idea to gut the DoD. When it comes to pass, the military will essentially be grounded with flight and steaming hours cut by about 75%, airshows cancelled, troops unable to deploy, etc. In short, thanks to this rat-eared wonder’s demand for sequestration this nation will be less safe and unable to respond should one of our enemies use this weakness to their advantage.

Brit Hume was on BOR last night, and BOR asked him essentially the same thing. And Hume’s politically correct response was that Obama continues to make Americans feel proud of themselves. In other words, Americans are happy with him simply because he’s black.

Sorry, but I could give a rat’s a** what color a politician is. Indeed, I thought MLK’s entire point was to shoot for a society in which only character and, presumably, merit mattered. I see no character and no merit in Obama, and his color is entirely irrelevant to me. In fact, I think supporting Obama in light of his idiocy and hard-left leanings is unbelievably pathetic for any self-respecting American. Obama is a POS who should never have been elected and certainly never should have been reelected.

Enjoy your “color blindedness,” Obama supporters.

The White Paper is a good start. It’s setting groundwork for trouble in 2016 for the Democrats. Possibly even 2014. Believe it or not, there are Democrats who are serious peaceniks. They don’t just pretend believe that way in order to score points against Republicans. Imagine them pressuring Democrats in swing districts in 2014, or getting behind a Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich in 2016, getting butthurt when the Democrat Establishment shuts them down, and voting Green.

Holding the line on guns has also been effective. The overwhelming majority of gun owners neither are nor know someone who is seriously, dangerously psychotic. Most manic-depressives I know wouldn’t harm a fly, and I don’t go shooting with them anyway. There is no need to take away my guns or all those other gun owners’ guns, to keep those guns out of the hands of mass murderers.

What I’m hoping the plan on immigration turns out to be is all the appearance of a good-faith effort at “reform,” that the inevitable Democrat moving of goalposts will ultimately kill. The fact 0bama is having this as a single bill, rather than easier to swallow smaller bills tells me that 0bama doesn’t want “reform” either. It would doom 0bamacare. He just wants Republicans to kill the deal. By being so seemingly cooperative, it can force the Democrats to qu3ar the deal.

Daily press conferences calling the 0bama Regime a pack of Communists may feel really good, but accomplish nothing.

lynncgb on February 12, 2013 at 9:01 AM

I think I understand what is happening here. 41% of Obamaphone owners are no longer getting their subsidy due to either being inelligible for the program or not responding to requests to proove eligibility. 2.5 Million people have been weeded out of the program now that the election is over. If they don’t have 5 “free” Obamaphones, they cannot respond to public polling.

Millions Improperly Claimed U.S. Phone Subsidies .
A program started under Reagan for landlines has grown into a boondoggle for Cell providers. One would think the smart answer would be to limit it to landlines. Much easier to ensure there is only 1 per household that way. Instead we will spend millions trying to crack down on fraud within the system, instead of just going back to the original intent of the program. If 41% are truly inelligible for the program, we just blew another $800 million of the $2.50 fees that we pay on our monthly cell phone bills to get Obama re-elected.

Obama is underwater on every major polling topic, because we are asking the wrong questions. The 9 issues polled do not include whether or not they favor his policy on free phones or other such nonsense. A majority of Obama supporters do not care one lick about traditional issues, they only care about what is in it for them.

I was gonna include that in my first post, but I didn’t wanna go there. I think it’s an unspoken truth though. Precisely, and that’s really all that matters. This bozo was re-elected in the midst of a piss-poor economy, high unemployment, and record debt and deficits, thanks in large part to the low-information American Idol voter. These other polls really mean nothing. They can POTENTIALLY translate into something, but that would require a competent opposition party.

National Defense
Foreign Affairs
Immigration
Energy Policy

Taxes
The economy
The situation in the Middle East between the Israelis and Palestinitans
The federal budget deficit

These are the issues polled by Gallup.

Somehow I don’t think the average Obama voter cares one bit about any of these issues. The question of how did Obama get re-elected due to his low polling on these issues is a flawed question to which the answer is obvious. His voters simply do not care about or pay attention to these issues. Adjust the polls to include questions for low-info voters and we will have our answer.

In short, the GOP needs to make the Dems own this because they truly are the ones that have caused it to happen no matter what the bastard claims in his SOTU speech tonight. Right now the debate among “mainstream Republicans” has been “How can we sneak the liberal agenda through while making it appear to our supporters as though we oppose it?” We’ve seen strong support from the Republicans for Obama with every major spending/debt/budget battle in the last few years, and now we have amnesty on deck.

Without a serious alternative that is capable of making a case for itself, the Democrats will continue to run the table in elections.

Who are these 39% who think the economy is GOOD?

These are the people who thought 5.5 percent unemployment in 2007 under Bush was the “worst economy since the great depression”.

Richly ironic that this recovery is the worst since FDR.

According to Gallup Obama’s approval rating on the economy breaks down like this:

Republicans: 10%
Independents: 30%
Democrats: 75%

It has the largest partisan split and D/I split out of any of the issues polled.

Democrats for some reason are in favor of high unemployment and negative GDP growth.

According to Steny Hoyer just now on CNBC we don’t have a spending problem, we have a problem paying for stuff we already promised to buy. See the difference?

ctmom on February 12, 2013 at 9:05 AM

..so the “semanticization” of this could be that it’s an “already spent” problem. But that only works if they don’t continue on the shopping spree.

The War Planner on February 12, 2013 at 10:40 AM

How was he elected with such low approval numbers? Here’s how:

* In 59 voting districts in the Philadelphia region, Obama received 100% of the votes with not even a single vote recorded for Romney. (A mathematical and statistical impossibility).

* In 21 districts in Wood County Ohio, Obama received 100% of
the votes where GOP inspectors were illegally removed from their
polling locations – and not one single vote was recorded for Romney. Another statistical impossibility).

* In Wood County Ohio, 106,258 voted in a county with only 98,213 eligible voters.

* In St. Lucie County, FL, there were 175,574 registered eligible voters but 247,713 votes were cast.

* The National SEAL Museum, a polling location in St. Lucie County, FL had a 158% voter turnout.

* Palm Beach County, FL had a 141% voter turnout.

* In Ohio County, Obama won by 108% of the total number of eligible voters.

NOTE: Obama won in every state that did not require a Photo ID and lost in every state that did require a Photo ID in order to vote.

Imagine that!

Liam on February 12, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Until we get a real, verifiable, voting registration and check system democrats will continue to win elections. The republicans are to blame also for letting this to continue without any real objection. Voting in this country is nothing more then Kabuki theater as demonstrated by the passage of Obamacare. We are living in a dictatorship by a political ruling class consisting of both major parties. God help us.

The lines about St. Lucie are not factually accurate. Breitbart initially ran with that line as well. It has been debunked here at Hot Air and at Twitchy.

The gyst from Twitchy:

Voter turnout in St. Lucie County, Fla., was not 141 percent. The confusion arose because uninformed people mistakenly conflated the number of “cards cast” (the number of ballot pages submitted by voters) with the number of voters. Since most voters submitted two ballot pages, voter turnout in in St. Lucie County was roughly half the number of cards cast. Thus, turnout was roughly 70-71 percent, not 141 percent.

I agree there were extensive irregularities in polling locations with 100% of the vote going to Obama, and the Democrats played games booting GOP poll watchers out. We all need to be careful to not push false cases, it is all our opponents will focus on. Let’s keep the attention on the cases that have a factual basis.

Gallup: Obama only gets positive marks on national defense

For basically continuing most of the policies of GWB. And in the cases of assassinations by remote control drones and escalating Afghanistan, the latter albeit reluctantly and half-heartedly, putting them on steroids.

Comrade O has sacrificed far more US lives in Afghanistan that GWB, for no real gain. Every month the body count gets closer to that in Iraq. When was the last time you heard a word about it from the Mainstream Media Propaganda Machine or the Hollywood celebrity crowd. Instead they all pretend real progress is being made in Afghanistan as US soldiers and Marines die and we plan to bug out ASAP.

Complete incompetence in Libya and Benghazi resulting in the murders of an American ambassador and some of his staff by al Qaeda affiliated terrorists on the anniversary of 9/11 is ignored.

Since he is a lefty his fellow travelers, including those in the media and in Tinseltown, have no problem with any of it.

farsighted on February 12, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Let’s see what Comrade O’s Gallup poll marks on national defense are in a couple of years after he guts the US military.

That’s a big part of it, but liberal media bias has gotten 100x worse since 2004.

Look what they did to Sarah Palin.

sentinelrules on February 12, 2013 at 10:05 AM

They are still doing it…

WaPo:

“An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported that Sarah Palin planned to contribute to the Al Jazeera America news network.”

Gee you think?

How could they have been fooled with a story that sounds so legit (/s):

Late last week Al Jazeera America announced the former vice-presidential candidate would be joining their news network.

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin told the Web site The Daily Currant. “But I met with the folks at Al-Jazeera and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

Your friend, by staying home, did just as much to help get Dear Leader re-elected as did those who actually voted for him. And the exact same thing happened in ’08.

Did your friend sit out last year’s election “to teach the Republicans a lesson”?

If so, the joke is on him.

Del Dolemonte on February 12, 2013 at 12:43 PM

A) O’Bozo basically kept Bush’s defense policy and personnel, acknowledging up front that his critics were 100% correct about him – he is a complete ignoramus on anything involving guns.

B) If you subtract the black 13% from his numbers, O’Bozo isn’t even fooling the nitwit white liberals. Blacks are so culturally insecure that they’re afraid to acknowledge anything about this clown.

3) just like in the election campaign, his evil team knows that their only hope of support is a partisan brawl, where the Democrats who realize how stupid and incompetent he is will nonetheless join him in any fight against Those Nasty Rethuglicans.

WHEN OBAMA CALLED UPON AMBASSADOR STEVENS TO SERVE IN LIBYA, STEVENS ANSWERED THAT CALL!

WHEN OBAMA CALLED UPON THE NAVY SEALS TO KILL OBL, THEY ANSWERED THAT CALL!

WHEN AFTER 2 PREVIOUS TERRORIST ATTACKS, WHEN AMBASSADOR STEVENS CALLED FOR ADDITIONAL SECURITY, OBAMA IGNORED THAT CALL!

WHILE 2 NAVY SEALS CALLED FOR HELP WHILE FIGHTING OFF 100 TERRORISTS FOR 7 HOURS, OBAMA IGNORED THAT CALL!

President Obama earns a 39% job approval rating for his handling of the economy, similar to his ratings on the issue one year ago. Among domestic issues, Obama’s rating on the economy is above only his 31% rating for handling the federal deficit.

Yet he was reelected comfortably. Someone please explain that to me.

Doughboy on February 12, 2013 at 8:44 AM

There are a significant number of people who think he needs to spend more, tax the wealthy more, Krugman would be an example of a person who would respond negatively to Obama’s handling of the economy from the far left.

Corruption on the part of Democrat election officials in many swing states. Compliant acceptance on the part of the Republican Party, and trolls in the electorate. I’m glad I’m old because I won’t have to face the ultimate collapse of the union.
