I can’t help thinking about a joke story I heard a few years back:
A Taliban unit is marching along the road and they hear a voice from behind a hill yell “hey Taliban weenies, I’m an American soldier all by myself.” The Taliban commander orders 10 men to go get him. There are sounds of a horrible battle for a few minutes, then the voice yells “hey Taliban, I’m still over here all alone”. So the Commander sends 30 men over the hill. After a terrible battle, one Taliban crawls back over the hill and says “don’t send any more, it’s a trap – there’s really 2 of them.”

Maybe it wasn’t a joke – maybe it was about Romesha and his band of true American heros.

Amen. That’s why I reread my Bantam war books time and again: to remind myself of the true heroes of my nation’s history. The tale of “Taffy 3″ is especially inspiring.

I fully expect the paultards to march into this thread and decry his heroism.

Sorry, I haven’t read all of the comments, but this really bugs me.
I watched part of the ceremony today and I noticed how Obama just had to insert himself into the story.
How HE had written a condolences letter to a mother, and how the mother had thanked HIM for writing the letter.

Comm’on all Romesha and his guys really needed was a couple of women in the unit and I’m sure they could have recovered that camp in a snap…I’ve got a mental picture of the girls freaking out when the guy took one in the shoulder and then the look of horror on their faces when Romesha describes how their going to charge into the house…yeah right.

I couldn’t find a list of attendees, but I did find this:

Army officials say Romesha risked his own life multiple times during the fight to fend off enemy fighters, resupply his fellow soldiers and protect wounded comrades. In attendance at a White House ceremony were veterans from the 2009 battle and families of the eight men who died that day.

Romesha paid tribute to those fallen friends after the ceremony, and President Barack Obama recognized the loss each represented to the team and the country.

That “battlescape” narrative & pix was chilling and horrifying. Really helps demonstrate what quick strategic & tactical thinking was required and hints at the amazing training our soldiers receive. Those men are true heroes.

From the AR15-6 Investigation Summary:

Combat Outpost (COP) Keating, originally established as a base for a Provincial Reconstruction Team in 2006, was located deep in a bowl in Nuristan Province, surrounded by high ground,

with limited overwatch protection from nearby Observation Post (OP) Fritsche.

The mission for COP Keating during the rotation of B Troop was unclear to the Soldiers of B Troop who understood counterinsurgency doctrine and the need to engage with and protect the local population. But owing to limited manpower and tactical reach off of the compound,

the mission devolved into one of base defense and by mid-2009 there was no tactical or strategic value to holding the ground occupied by COP Keating.

As a result, the chain of command decided to close the remote outpost as soon as it could. Originally scheduled for closure in July-August 2009, COP Keating’s withdrawal was delayed

when the assets required to backhaul base supplies were diverted to support intense brigade-level operations in Barg-e Matal in support of ANSF forces.

Similarly, ISR assets that could have given the Soldiers at COP Keating better situational awareness of their operational environment

were reprioritized to support Barge-e Matal as well as the search for a missing US Soldier in the south.

The delayed closing of COP Keating is important as it contributed to a mindset of imminent closure that served to impede improvements in force protection on the COP.

There were inadequate measures taken by the chain of command, resulting in an attractive target for enemy fighters.

Over time, and without raising undue concern within the US intelligence system, the enemy conducted numerous probing attacks, learning the tactics, techniques and procedures of B Troop,

and pinpointing location of weapons systems and key infrastructure and material, such as generators and barracks.
