I did the calculation for this sucker, 4179 Toutatis, which has come within 4 Lunar Distances; not close enough to freak us out, but extremely close given the enormity of space. If it hit us, it wouldn’t cause long-term global effects (according to conservative parameters like a 45 degree angle of incidence and a velocity of 17 km/s), but the surrounding area would be obliterated, 31 cubic miles of land would be vaporized, and the final impact crater would have a depth of 3230 feet and a diameter of 33.8 miles.

Not uncommon for news people, I’ve even had personal experience. A number of years ago, a train derailed near our house. A news “lady” knocked on our door to interview me, and saw my three little boys when I answered the door. The first thing she asked me was “Do you let your little boys play on the train tracks?”

I answered, “Only if they have their guns and knives on them”.

End of interview. It was never used on the evening news, not that I watch it anyway.

LOL... seriously, we really have no defense against the small ones in this 50-500 meter diameter range. On average, the Earth is hit by one of these size objects about once every 1200 years. For a perfect example of what a 50 meter wide, iron/nickel asteroid can do, have a look at Meteor Crater, AZ.
