Dorner morphing into an anti-hero?

posted at 2:01 pm on February 10, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

I have, at times, been accused of being somewhat naive when it comes to modern culture, both by family members and readers alike. Perhaps you’re all on to something there, because I certainly never saw this coming. As the search continues for alleged cop killer Christopher Dorner, there is an emerging theme – at least on the West Coast – that perhaps Dorner is some sort of Robin Hood, standing up for the little guy and taking it to the corrupt LA police force.

Support Growing For Former L.A. Officer Accused Of Killing Spree

Dorner lost his job with the Los Angeles Police Department in 2008. His manifesto vows revenge for that; and, surprisingly, thousands of people actually support him.

It’s hard to believe but there are those out there who sympathize with the man targeting police officers.

One Facebook page is proclaiming Dorner for president. “We propose electing a man who could no longer sit idly by and watch as malicious tyrants abuse the innocent.”

The description on “We Are All Chris Dorner” chillingly says, “Yes, this is war.”

I can’t even conceive of this, but apparently these cheerleaders of mayhem have their reasons. When the local news station put out the question as to why anyone would support this crime spree, one respondent answered, “Because something needs to be done about the long known corruption of not only the LAPD, but several agencies.

To add insult to injury, even as thousands of law enforcement officers are searching for him, the police department is reopening an investigation into the circumstances of his firing. If this is being done as some sort of tactical ploy to draw him out of hiding and into “negotiations” so he can be taken into custody, then I suppose that’s fine. But if the administration at the police department is seriously responding to the murder and attempted murder of several of their officers by saying, “oh, wait… let’s see if maybe he’s got a point” … then the world has truly turned on its ear. Even if that were the case, the time to examine the question is not while Dorner is actively hunting cops and it only adds to this Robin Hood persona building around him.

I understand that there are people out there with grievances against the LAPD, both in the community and among their own ranks. How much of the public perception – frequently fostered by the media, as in the Rodney King case – is real and how much of it is misdirected, manufactured outrage is up for debate. And perhaps Dorner had some sort of legitimate complaint about the circumstances surrounding his termination from work. But for anyone to lionize this maniac’s actions as some form of perverted justice speaks volumes about our society, and it’s not a pretty picture being painted.

If the criminal justice system had ever shown any interest in regulating police violence and abuses against American citizens of color it’s unlikely you’d be seeing pro-Chris Donner groups. It’s not about him, it’s about the LAPD and their legacy of unchecked violence against citizens.

The police killed 200 black people in 2012, for some reason their deaths didn’t make CNN.

libfreeordie on February 10, 2013 at 3:58 PM

How many black people were murdered by fellow blacks in Chicago in 2012? How about in New York? In Philadelphia? New Orleans? Atlanta and New Orleans? For some reason, their deaths didn’t make headlines in CNN, NY Times, MSNBC, Chicago Tribune and other MSM. How about this, libfreeordie, how did the national media treated the gruesome murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. Oh wait, except for the regional papers, the national media totally ignored the murders. How about this, if the crime is white on black, the news media on to it like glue with cries of racism for weeks. If it is black on white crime, the national news would ignore the race of the criminal, the same would happen if the crime is a black on Asian or Hispanic crime.

Yes the state categorized the BPP as a threat to national security, good thing the state is always right for conservatives right? Fed Hampton was a citizen. If the police had charges to bring against him for something they had every ability to do so. Instead they killed him in his sleep. The fact that you find something defensible in that says everything we need to know about conservative thought on black people’s right to citizenship in this country.

As for your other questions. I’ve already exposed your lack of knowledge on urban history. Please stop borrowing lies from that blog stuff black people don’t like. That guys history of Detroit is a laughing stock.

libfreeordie on February 10, 2013 at 4:11 PM

So…..you want to disarm the civilian population because you think the state is corrupt and racist yet they should be the only ones with the guns? That is basically the only conclusion anyone can come to when looking at your arguments. I mean you have been the one telling us conservatives we need to turn our guns in and that we live in a new peaceful nation where government (which also means the police) is always right and we uncivilized savages just don’t understand the modern world. America will never be like the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany you said….yet now you say the government is racist and bad.

This is why communist and socialist always fail…they make no sense.

“Because something needs to be done about the long known corruption of not only the LAPD, but several agencies.”

If you are not from California, odds are you are completely incapable of understanding the emotional sentiment wrapped up in this statement. If you pay attention to what Californian’s say about California, one of our biggest complaints is that California has become a police state. An insane percentage of you even think we deserve it.

However, when we (those of us from California) make that statement, we are not talking about what you think we are talking about. We are not talking about the California that only exists in the media and your minds eye. What we are talking about is the California where in the same year that OJ Simpson murdered his wife and her friend, the Rampart Police Departments “CRASH” anti-gang/drug unit, murdered 57 people and were L.A.’s largest cocaine dealers.

If you have never had to deal with a Californian police officer, then you probably cannot comprehend why so many Californian’s would consider Dorner to be a Robin Hood-ish anti-hero. To put it bluntly, far to many (not all by any means) but far to many California police officers do not protect and serve, they dominate and oppress. To say that they are abusive thugs, would be an understatement akin to describing the Gestapo as being boy scouts.

NO, I AM NOT CONDONING
Dorner’s actions in any way shape or form. His actions are utterly unacceptable, on the other hand, look at the LAPD’s first response to Dorner, they ran out just as fast as they could and shot a couple of women delivering newspapers, who weren’t even driving the same model, make or color truck as Dorner owned.

America’s revolutionary War started with an incident at Lexington and Concord, our civil war, at Fort Sumpter, it never occurred to me that the next civil war might start over a disturbed Liberal ex-cop going nuts.

If anything, I would wager that she doesn’t believe that they go far enough.

As I said, she may agree with Paul on foreign policy, but it is highly unlikely that they have very much more in common. jon1979 on February 10, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Nothing “bordering” about this. The engagement by law enforcement officers of those three people was absolutely criminal. If a free citizen in similar circumstances were to open fire when not sure of their target, said free citizen would be charged by the same LA cops who committed their shootings with a multitude of charges. If someone had died, at a minimum, charges of negligent homicide would be applicable.

This was criminally negligent. Being unsure of their targets and still opening up with lethal force — thank goodness it was police officers shooting, a free citizen would have probably killed the people they were shooting at instead of spraying down the neighborhood with dozens of rounds.

Not being sure of a target and yet using lethal force should result in every one of those officers being fired and barred from ever being employed as police officers again.

Yes, he is a demented fool, but in this case, he is actually on to something.

SWalker on February 10, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Dorner is just mad because he got fired, not because of any grand theory of corruption. He wanted to be part of whatever corruption there is and he’s ticked that he was thrown out. Of course, his actions show that he had no business as a cop, to begin with. Whoever was responsible for getting him kicked off the force was right. And Dorner is merely on a self-obsessed revenge mission, nothing bigger than that, no matter how much the left and demented fools like fibfreeanddie drool over political revolutionaries taking society down.

As to the LAPD and their violence, LA is a violent, insane place. If the cops didn’t bend to political correctness then LA would not have even gotten to this point.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on February 10, 2013 at 4:52 PM

Sorry, but I am going to have to politely disagree. Dorner was fired for reporting a fellow officer and superior physically assaulting a prisoner.

I am not suggesting that Dorner is in any way justified in doing what he is doing, he absolutely is not. All I am telling you is why he is being seen by many in California as some kind of anti-hero. The police here, and not just LAPD, have a very well earned reputation for being arrogant abusive and dishonest. There is absolutely no amount of crime that justifies the police breaking the law to “Uphold” the law.

What I noticed most about libfree’s posts is that he showed no concern whatsoever about the three people murdered by Dorner, or how many others might die by this maniac’s hand. Instead, the ghoulish monster sought to justify his hero and himself with matters having nothing at all to do with Los Angeles or any police corruption there.

The entire attitude of that lib, like of so many other ghouls of his kind, is nothing short of disgusting on every possible level.

We’ll just have to disagree on this. Obviously, the LAPD are incompetent as can be seen by how they have reacted to this, shooting up cars that look like Dorner’s, but that has nothing to do with Dorner or his alleged complaints (which happen to include him being ticked off that people aren’t prostrating themselves to the retarded Indonesian in the White House, which is enough to know that Dorner is just a dangerous, destructive waste of flesh who has no business benefitting from civilized society, at all).

But, the main point is that Dorner’s actions now (years after all this) show that he was clearly unfit to be a cop. Whoever got him off the force and for whatever reason were perfectly correct. What if he had snapped while in uniform? That would have been something especially nasty. At least, there are some minor constraints on his actions, now, since he’s on the run.

This is not about the LAPD. It’s about one racially obsessed fruitcake who does not deserve to live.

Thus far, his score on that seems to be ZERO.

A young woman basketball coach and her fiance – both unconnected to his ‘case’ and a young cop who was a complete stranger to him (and from another police force) hardly constitute “taking on the power”.
If he was a man – rather than a coward – he would have gone after those who – supposedly – ‘wronged’ him. He would have gone after cops that he *knew* were corrupt.

Nah. Dorner’s no “hero”. Or “anti-hero”. He’s just another coward with a gun…all of his narcissistic rationalization to the contrary.

An insane percentage of you even think we deserve it.

We are talking about a state that has elected Jerry Brown. Twice. … and continues to elect a legislature that thinks the way to restore fiscal soundness is to tax the people who provide jobs until they move themselves and their businesses out of the state. Can’t really argue with the logic, you know? ;-)

… What we are talking about is the California where in the same year that OJ Simpson murdered his wife and her friend, the Rampart Police Departments “CRASH” anti-gang/drug unit, murdered 57 people and were L.A.’s largest cocaine dealers.

… His actions are utterly unacceptable, on the other hand, look at the LAPD’s first response to Dorner, they ran out just as fast as they could and shot a couple of women delivering newspapers, who weren’t even driving the same model, make or color truck as Dorner owned.

I would say Dorner and issue of corrupt cops are direct result of war on drugs, paramilitarization of police depts and so on. At a base level minorities get it that the legal system is stacked against them. When narcotics no-knocks granny’s humble home based on false Intel and all they do is tell her “sorry”, who’s paying for the damage? This is every bit the equivalent of Nathan’s parable to king David. If there were no war on drugs, folks wouldn’t feel like they’re busted for driving while black and we wouldn’t have millions necessarily in jail simply for possession etc. I think the police have gone way beyond their original charter of serving the community, keeping the peace and policing up a mess. if anything, it is the sheriffs that are responsible for chasing down the criminals and bringing them to justice dead or alive. oh well. Dorner is equally the monster spawned of left and right politics, but not libertarian or true constitutional principles.

One also has to remember that there are two America’s. In one America, the Cops are always perfectly honest civil servants heroically struggling to do a profoundly difficult and thankless job.

In the other America, the America that isn’t financially well off, can’t afford high priced attorneys, and has actually had to deal with the cops, Cops simply are not to be trusted, because they lie like rugs, violate their sworn oaths whenever it suits them and break the very laws they are sworn to uphold.

It’s kind of like the “Cloud City” episode of the Original Star Trek, the people who live in the Clouds live in a beautiful perfect world. The people who live on the surface, who keep the Cloud Cities floating inhabit a living hell. The people in the Cloud Cities simply refuse to believe or accept that the surface isn’t as beautiful and perfect as their Cloud Cities are, even though the Surface Dwellers keep killing themselves trying to crash the Cloud Cities.

Sorry, RadioAngel, but your relatives volunteered for the LEO jobs they have. Whining about it being dangerous now is just pathetic. That being said, our local Las Vegas metro police force has a well-earned reputation for cavalierly “lighting a$$es up”, and then wtshtf circling the wagons and protecting their own, regardless of the facts. This has not fostered a lot of admiration for LEOs from the civilian peeps. Dorner is the product of leftist indoctrinated insanity, pushed over the edge by the very thugs who created him.

Sad fact is, once the LAPD does find him and “light his a$$ up” (to keep his a$$ quiet in the future) we are likely to experience a nasty nationwide “Rodney King” event. I guarantee, the LAPD and the LVMPD represent just the tip of the iceberg, and there are many of us (even us white folks) who no longer consider LEOs to be our friends. They are first, armed government agents taking orders from a craven, corrupt ruling class that covers its own ass, and has abandoned the “rule of law”, for the rule of tyrants.

bw222 on February 10, 2013 at 6:06 PM

Jumping in late, but yeah, of course there are some people cheering this guy on. First off, he “filed a false police report” alleging another cop roughed some guy up and it got him fired. That alone should give you pause. Cops never get fired, and they routinely lie in their police reports. Even when caught with contradictory evidence in court, they usually end up with a quick paid vacation then they’re back to work.

Second off, in the course of this manhunt, the cops have already shot up the vehicles of two innocent people without cause. In a just world, those cops would lose their badges and be in jail for attempted murder. God forbid someone had a child in the backseat of those cars that was killed by that kind of reckless behavior.

And if the police are going to continue treating citizens as criminals and continue making the interactions between non-cops and cops so adversarial, they are not going to have much support in their communities. So, I totally get it.

Timin203 on February 10, 2013 at 6:07 PM

Make cops personally liable for their actions on the job, and I think that’d go a long way toward changing the cops’ attitudes. Seriously, they rough someone up or shoot up an innocent persons car and at worst they get a paid vacation while the tax payers are on the line for a huge civil settlement.

The cops should be in jail and should be on the line for any civil settlement as well.

This is the danger of people not trusting law enforcement. This also creates a great dichotomy between those who distrust the state and those who still continue to worship it – they still sing the national anthem with their hand on the heart while that nation steals what they earn, creates terrorism, creates depressions and destroys the currency.

Details emerge about police shooting two women in case of mistaken identity:

“As the vehicle approached the house, officers opened fire, unloading a barrage of bullets into the back of the truck. When the shooting stopped, they quickly realized their mistake. The truck was not a Nissan Titan, but a Toyota Tacoma. The color wasn’t gray, but aqua blue. And it wasn’t Dorner inside the truck, but a woman and her mother delivering copies of the Los Angeles Times.”

“In an interview with The Times on Friday, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck outlined the most detailed account yet of how the shooting unfolded. Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71, were the victims of “a tragic misinterpretation” by officers working under “incredible tension,” he said.”

“Law enforcement sources told The Times that at least seven officers opened fire. On Friday, the street was pockmarked with bullet holes in cars, trees, garage doors and roofs. Residents said they wanted to know what happened.

“How do you mistake two Hispanic women, one who is 71, for a large black male?” said Richard Goo, 62, who counted five bullet holes in the entryway to his house.”
