Media showing surprising restraint on Dorner’s politics

posted at 10:01 am on February 9, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

Christopher Dorner remains on the loose this weekend, the subject of one of the most intense manhunts of this generation. And the media is covering the story wall to wall with regular updates, interviews with his former friends and public advisories. One of the most important things that all of these talking heads want you to remember is that the now vanished maniac may have very powerful weapons. It’s an important piece of information to be sure, particularly for residents in the affected area. But with many hours of the news cycle to fill and so much background information on the suspect to cover, it still feels as if there’s something missing, doesn’t it?

At Mediaite, Noah Rothman has spotted the discontinuity.

Alleged Los Angeles shooter Christopher Jordan Dorner, influenced by left-leaning media coverage of gun crime in the wake of the Newtown shootings, has virtually paralyzed the City of Angels. Floyd Lee Corkins, a gunman incensed by anti-gay marriage bias after reading articles by the liberal advocacy group Southern Poverty Law Center, took a firearm into the Family Research Council’s headquarters with the intention of killing “as many as possible.” He hoped to smash Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the faces of as many corpses as he could. These shooters were clearly moved by left-wing media, and we should thank every benevolent force in the universe that they were. Had either shooter possessed even a tenuous link to a conservative group, a media-driven hysteria about the malevolent influence of right-wing broadcasters and commentators would be gripping the nation today. Fortunately, when a crazed shooter’s ideology is explicitly and demonstrably left-wing, the media displays admirable restraint about linking a gunman’s politics to their acts of violence.

Motive matters, both in a court of law and in the process which law enforcement employs when tracking down a killer. But in terms of responsibility, I tend to be more in line with Charles Cooke at National Review, who notes that the final responsibility lies with the criminal, not with the media environment they’ve been soaking in. But he also manages to sympathize with those who are quick to note the double standard in play.

That notwithstanding, one can sympathize with the conservatives who jumped at the opportunity to exact revenge on the media, whose complicity in a series of previous rushes to blame “right wing” rhetoric for the actions of killers such as Timothy McVeigh and Jared Loughner — and tendency to presume without evidence that violence must be motivated by phantom “tea party” connections — has been nothing short of shameful. While deploring the tendency of revenge to legitimize the very position that is being criticized, sucking all parties into a useless battle of tu quoque, one can at least forgive the sentiment.

Putting this tendency to one side, there is one area in which vexed conservatives are absolutely correct. There is a whole world of difference between reporting the details of a killer’s manifesto, and accepting the killer’s conceits.

Cooke is correct. In a free society, people have to accept (and assign) responsibility for the actions of the individual to the bad actor in question. If we are to accept that seeing or hearing “bad things” is somehow an excuse for criminal behavior, then the entire battle for responsible citizenship is already lost. We may as well just start banning the production of Grand Theft Auto and confiscating all the DVDs of the Die Hard trilogy if those are accepted as reasonable excuses for mayhem.

But it would be nice, just this one time, to see a bit of that famous “fair and balanced” requirement for professional journalism in this case. Unfortunately, because of the nature of Dorner’s preferences, the fact that he has guns is suddenly far more important than any formative influences which might have helped lead him to this riotous behavior.

They also show a lot of restraint reporting terrorist attacks committed by environmental groups, who are second only to muslims in their frequency and number of such incidents.

These network entities are by default and, perhaps by intent, political propaganda machines operating on behalf of Obama and the general left. Should they publish the political orientation of this killer it would tend to reflect badly upon all public liberals and leftists, and therefore the information is simply being ignored and withheld. Bottom line . . . they’re protecting Obama.

You disrespect the office of the POTUS/Presidency and Commander in Chief. You call him Kenyan, mongroid, halfrican, muslim, and FBHO when in essence you are to address him as simply, President. The same as you did to President George W. Bush and all those in the highest ranking position of our land before him. Just as I always have. You question his birth certificate, his educational and professional accomplishments, and his judeo-christian beliefs. You make disparaging remarks about his dead parents.

Off the record, I love your new bangs, Mrs. Obama.

Sen. Feinstein, you are doing the right thing in leading the re-institution of a national AWB.

What I should have done, was put a Winchester Ranger SXT 9mm 147 grain bullet in his skull and Officer Magana’s skull.

I’m not a f***ing Christian and that old book, made of fiction and limited non-fiction, called the bible, never once stated Jesus was called a ni**er.

I say we refer to this murderer as the “MSNBC hitman”, or “CNN’s Hired Gun”. When can we get pics of the dead officers with a smiling Chris Matthews face photoshopped above the dead cops with the words, “Hate! It’s what we advocate”. I know I know, we’re “better” than that, but don’t think for one minute that the Left would show any restraint if this were the other way around.

Weight of Glory on February 9, 2013 at 10:36 AM

While Dorner and Corkin are individually and solely responsible, I find sport in using them as a cudgel against the Left. The MSM went out of their way many times to try linking other criminals with the Right, their ‘research’ ongoing until they could find a name with links to the NRA or Tea Party. But these two have solid liberal views, which the media can’t escape.

Sure, Morgan, Matthews, et. al. can avoid mention of this inconvenient truth, but the facts are clear and settled; there is no speculation. Too many across the world know the politics of these latest criminals and who they look up to in the MSM.

I enjoy knowing the MSM party hacks are a little uncomfortable now. It will fade, so the next time there’s a mass shooting they’ll be right back to seeking links with the Right. In the meantime, media liberals own these guys now and forever.

This isn’t revenge, because we took no action. I call it balancing the scales; or Karma; or God simply has a superb sense of irony.

Paul Mirengoff @ Power Line:

This sort of opportunism is, among other things, an effort to undermine robust speech by one’s political opponent. Everyone — Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Piers Morgan, whoever — should feel free strongly to advocate their positions without worrying about being blamed if a madman distorts them into some sort of justification for their deranged framework. Only if the speaker advocates violence is the speaker to blame if his speech inspires violence.

Unfortunately, the MSM plays by these rules only when doing so suits its ideological purposes.

And one of Paul’s savvy readers comments:

As I read through it, it seemed like a 22 page collection of Mpls. Star-Tribune editorials, not a 22 page manifesto.

This Dorner guy is a wild-eyed lefty, but he is sharp.

He parks his truck in the Bear Mountain area, and sets it on fire. Was he signaling the police to look for him in the mountains? Hell yes. Did he stay in the mountains? Hell no, but the cops fell for it, so mission accomplished. He probably had other transportation available so he could start the fire and get the hell outta Dodge, he’s long gone. It will be interesting to see where he surfaces, but it won’t be in the San Bernadillo mountains.

Actually, I’m surprised the left has passed up the gold in Dorner’s manifesto.

I was sure that the headlines would be “Maniac who declared George H W Bush one of his favorite presidents, was saddened that John Huntsman was not the GOP nominee, and made his final decision to join the military after reading Colin Powell’s book goes on killing spree”.

I can’t figure out why they have decided not to run with this info and draw the usual lefty conclusions/innuendo.

Maybe they are conflicted about drone strikes??? Only so much fits in their poor widdle heads.

Not only is he lucid and articulate, his take on politics in the department and the country in general is awesome. OK – I take issue with a few things. It’s clear he’s REALLY angry, and he’s blaming everyone for his actions. But I find this fascinating, and hopefully it will bring about some of the changes that he talks about.

The “Boss Emeritus” also has a good post on this…….

The Blame Righty mob falls silent

Key paragraph:

It’s ridiculous, of course, to blame these journos for the deaths of three innocents in Southern California. But herein lies a teachable moment. In the sick cycle of recent politicized tragedies, the Blame Righty mob demanded that conservative media personalities and GOP politicians apologize for crimes they didn’t commit; called for increased regulation of political free speech; and cranked up its decades-old machinery to stifle conservative talk radio in the name of public safety and civility. Even the remotest connection to anything right-wing was excuse enough to convict conservatives for homicidal sprees.

Sick cycle indeed!

Media showing surprising restraint on Dorner’s politics

Hey Jazz ole boy, you know what else they are showing a surprising restraint on? Why that would be the L.A. Police Departments reaction to Dorner… You know what I’m talking about. Their shoot first then cover up attitude. The L.A. Gestapo pulled over the first vehicle they came across matching the description of Dorner’s, did ask any questions, just shot it up with 50 or so rounds, serious injuring two women who were only guilty of delivering newspapers.

Anyone who has bothered to wade through Dorner’s manifesto knows that what Dorner claims as a justification for his actions, is a intractable and systemic culture of corruption within the California Law Enforcement Community, most specifically the Los Angeles Police Department.

More importantly, most Californian’s know that Dorner’s assertions are not mere empty rhetoric or simply the rantings of a deranged and disgruntled former employe. It is genuinely tragic that Christopher Dorner has chosen this particular path in an attempt to shine light on the corruption that permeates the California legal system.

The Fifth Column Treasonous Media will ignore the reasons why Dorner is doing this every bit as much as they will ignore the inconvenient truths regarding Dorner’s political and ideological leaning. They will do so, because neither fit or suit their own political agenda, the Fifth Column Treasonous Media doesn’t report the news anymore, the sculpt current events into propaganda soundbites and engage in indoctrination.

3. Nkosi Thandiwe, who shot 3 white women and killed 1, tells a court in Atlanta that he learned to “hate whitey” at university.

4. Wannabe Taliban fighter, Matthew Aaron Llaneza, arrested yesterday trying to blow up a Bank of America building in Oakland. He wanted the bank bombing to be blamed on anti-U.S. government militias, triggering a government crackdown, a right-wing response and a civil war.

5. Even the NYT is calling for Robert Menendez to be removed from the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee until he is cleared.

6. Obama was AWOL during the attack in Benghazi.

7. Hillary was AWOL during the attack in Benghazi.

9. Obama’s white paper on drone attacks on Americans is chilling – for the Left, it is a betrayal and is the ultimate hypocrisy. Only ObamaFirsters (like Toure, Crystal Ball, etc) on the Left support the “judge, jury, and executioner” programme and don’t mind that they are appear hypocritical.

He’s a brave left wing hero.

An anti-gun activist who kills people with guns.

If you’re a liberal, this guy is a rockstar.

Don L on February 9, 2013 at 12:52 PM

By the position of National Review and Jazz, we might think that the propaganda outlets have no responsibility.

Why?

The actions of these nuts is analogous to canaries in a coal mine. Or weak people who drop first in an epidemic.

The lies are toxins in the air.

Were any of you around groups of minorities during the media coverage of the Zimmerman shooting?

I was.

So..OK! I will get a few million and experiment by producing a show which lies about white guys wantonly killing in minority communities. I will even show the murders as news. I shall then have my actors ride around in their pick up past the minority audience which was watching these fictional shows a few hours later. Reverse the races in the story. It could still have an ugly result, except our minority brothers and sisters already have some other encouragement as they live every day.

Minorities only? Any human mind can be inflamed.

There used to be a legal defense to murder called In Flagrante Delicto. Texas was among the last states to have it, as I recall.

Guns sit passive in cases. The information given a user is pretty bland compared to the vivid showing of murder, rape or official oppression in our powerful media. But we want to chain up the gun sellers.

Wrong people up for regulation, I say.

Media showing surprising restraint on Dorner’s politics

(Our local) Media showing surprising restraint on Dorner’s politics by not reporting it altogether.

Sir Napsalot on February 9, 2013 at 1:17 PM

They must be pulling their hair out trying to find an appropriate moniker for Dorner. He’s black, but they can’t blame his ethnicity. He’s apparently liberal, but they sure can’t blame his politics. Why couldn’t he be a white Southerner? It would make their job of reporting so much easier . . .

I have included a sample of the tweets referencing Django in my “Bar Rafaeli” post. The link is above.

Interesting to se the LAPD throwing the Constitution to the 4 winds. House to house armed searches, “Let me see you papers”, Jackbooted Police establishing checkpoints on the roads and the “Conservatives” are silent.

When they start jailing people randomly, it will get even more interesting.

So – not surprising that Jazz Shaw and Allahpunidt and this Blog have chosen to toss in with this smoking bag of flesh and evil and CHEER HIM ON!!!! The way Jazz is doing here. His Headline:

“Media showing surprising restraint on Dorner’s politics”

This is Jazz’s take after this piece of crap BRUTALLY MURDERED three innocent people, BRAGGED ABOUT it, and BRAGGED ABOUT his LOVE of The Left and The Meda……and The Media DELIBERATLEY CENSORED THE STORY to produce the Emotion they can use – TO KILL MORE INNOCENT PEOPLE.

Oh – I get it – your LIE in this headline is “snark”, right Jazz?

No – IT’S A LIE that FEEDS and COMFORTS this kind of behavior.

“It’s Humpty-Dumpty logic: “When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

What do we mean when we say that someone is “politicizing” an event like this? Well, when an enthusiastic gun-control supporter (like Chris Dorner) goes on a killing rampage, his fellow gun-control supporters (like Piers Morgan) will accuse you of “politicizing” the tragedy if you suggest that this might tend to discredit their cause. But it was not “politicizing” when Piers Morgan seized upon the Sandy Hook shootings as conclusive proof of the rightness of his cause.

It’s like “racism,” an accusation no one ever makes against their political friends and allies, but only against the opposition. By constant abuse of the word, liberals have stripped the word of any meaning, so that it becomes “RAAAAACISM“ (with 5 A’s), a synonym for “shut up.”

If conservatives were as reckless as liberals in their use of language, the headline of this post would be, “Send the Bodies to Mia Farrow….”

Troll-free threads are pleasant, I must say. The Mobys are busy posting fawning threads on Kos and DU about what a hero this guy is because he fights the power.

Moonbats in their habitat.

Charlie Sheen is now pleading with this murderous liberal maniac to turn himself in. I wonder how long until Hollywood make a hero-worshipping movie about Dorner’s ‘exploits’ on the lam. I’m sure they can work in a few scenes where he feeds a stray cat or two.

law enforcement officials fear that he may be heavily armed, possibly with a powerful .50 caliber rifle, which shoots five-inch long bullets that can pierce bullet proof vests and vehicles

Please note that, in its infinite wisdom, California banned possession and sale of .50 caliber rifles, classifying them as “assault weapons” but carving out an EXCEPTION for law enforcement. How’s that working out for you?

Likewise, the 1986 ban on newly-manufactured machine guns has an exception for law enforcement, yet a police officer used one to commit a murder in 1988, one of only two murders with a legal machine gun since the 1934 National Firearms Act placed restrictions on civilian ownership.

Socratease on February 9, 2013 at 3:52 PM

Oh, and “5-inch long bullets”? Another case of the media getting their gun terminology wrong and not knowing the difference between a bullet and a cartridge.

The people who control major media outlets evidently see it as their job to keep certain dangerous facts away from their readers and viewers. Oh, not things like wiretaps on terrorists, or the locations of CIA safe houses, or how we track the finances of terrorist organizations, or internal State Department memos. No, those things are perfectly OK for the public (and our enemies) to know. What REALLY terrifies them is the public knowing how much the moral cesspool the media and liberal NGOs have built in their zeal to attack conservatives have contributed to the violence in our society. The truth about that must be silenced wherever its exposure is threatened.

Americans must be prevented from making their own informed opinions about these matters.

Socratease on February 9, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Military personnel first called in the tip to San Diego police, saying there was a strong possibility that the suspect was spotted near Spanish Landing Park, Hassen said.

A man fitting the description of Dorner was believed to be barricaded in a nearby hotel, Hassen told NBC. It later turned out to be a false alarm, police said.

..one wonders how many 30-rd mags (not clips) and unregistered/”unlawful” firearms will be seized in the course of these break-ins?

An aside — and I am sure the point has been made — this boob rants FOR “gun control” while his escapades make the very argument for self-defense ownership. I toil in my Southern California garage this afternoon with my AR and ammunition withing reach.
