Panetta: Obama never called back to check on Benghazi

posted at 8:01 am on February 8, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

We didn’t get to this yesterday, but it’s definitely worth watching — especially for the skill shown by Lindsey Graham in his examination of Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey.  The headline takeaway will be what is remembered most: the revelation that Barack Obama never bothered to keep in touch with his chair of the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense after being informed that an American consulate was under attack from terrorists.

But if that’s all you hear from this, you’re missing the big picture. Graham managed to elicit a number of damaging statements from the two.  Not one aircraft had been deployed during the attack; not one boot left the ground outside of Libya.  As far as the 281 concurrent threat reports that Panetta and Dempsey claimed kept them from considering Benghazi a special threat, Graham asks how many of those cables came from US Ambassadors stating specifically (as Stevens’ did) that an American installation was incapable of defending itself against a sustained attack and that government buildings nearby were flying al-Qaeda flags — “because I want to know about them, if they do,” Graham adds.  Dempsey tries to push that off to State, at which time Graham informs Dempsey that Hillary Clinton claimed never to have seen that cable, even though Dempsey clearly had, which he admits is “surprising.”

Graham then circles back to the lack of action from the White House once the attack was under way:

SEN. GRAHAM: Are you surprised that the president of the United States never called you, Secretary Panetta, and say, ‘how’s it going?’

SEC. PANETTA: I — you know, normally in these situations –

SEN. GRAHAM: Did he know the level of threat that –

SEC. PANETTA: Let — well, let me finish the answer. We were deploying the forces. He knew we were deploying the forces. He was being kept updated –

SEN. GRAHAM: Well, I hate to interrupt you, but I got limited time. We didn’t deploy any forces. Did you call him back — wait a minute –

SEC. PANETTA: No, but the event — the event was over by the time we got –

SEN. GRAHAM: Mr. Secretary, you didn’t know how long the attack would last. Did you ever call him and say, Mr. President, it looks like we don’t have anything to get there anytime soon?

SEC. PANETTA: The event was over before we could move any assets.

SEN. GRAHAM: It lasted almost eight hours. And my question to you is during that eight-hour period, did the president show any curiosity about how’s this going, what kind of assets do you have helping these people? Did he ever make that phone call?

SEC. PANETTA: Look, there is no question in my mind that the president of the United States was concerned about American lives and, frankly, all of us were concerned about American lives.

SEN. GRAHAM: With all due respect, I don’t believe that’s a credible statement if he never called and asked you, are we helping these people; what’s happening to them? We have a second round, and we’ll take it up then.

Graham just demolished the entire White House defense on Benghazi in less than ten minutes of cross-examination.

Obama was reluctant to do the right thing on Libyan diplomatic security because he knew it was unpopular potentially and the more he had to fortify security or admit that it was out of control by yanking personnel the more likely he would be called on the carpet about the wisdom of acting as radical Islam’s air wing without Congressional oversight.

The GOP is as guilty of dereliction of duty as he is, I understand *why* they feared doing their duty the newsies would vilify them beyond all measure but there it is.

Panetta lying about our readiness and forces on the board for this operation window is ludicrous and itself worthy of impeachment of Panetta.

If we have reached a point that the DoD cannot conduct theater support missions in defacto Europe’s NATO window then the nation’s defense has been CRIMINALLY mismanaged.

Obama could not be bothered because he knew an Urkel “did I do taht?!?!” should not have been able to fly ppast the public’s radar and besides he had a date with Jay-Z and Beyonce in Vega$ baby.

The media succeeding in hiding the story on this terrifies me.

Amb Stevens was a man who donated heavily to Obama and was a democrat operative, for Obama to be this indifferent to an ally and then get away with KNOWINGLY lying about “a fully automatic assault video” being the cause….

Panetta: Obama never called back to check on Benghazi

We knew all this stuff at the time. barky heard about benghazi, went to sleep and then jetted off to a fundraiser in Las Vegas the next day as soon as he woke up. This was all well-known. It’s just that the MSM never said another word about it and the idiot, Romney, didn’t think it was worth bringing up.

The Indonesian Dog-Eater later made a transparent attempt to lie about it, claiming that he ordered someone to do something about it (the orders of which could never be produced … unlike the photo of Barky firing off a shotgun at ground level, trying to hit some clay pigeon that already landed, evidently) and the MSM, once again, ignored the whole thing.

No surprises. The Dog-eater is the treasonous America-hating retard he always was and that we all know he always was. His supporters know it – that’s why they support him. They hate America and the West, too, and look at bringing this miserable, destructive POS to power to rain destruction on the US and the West, as was always Barky’s intention and has he done quite well since he first slimed into an office that he isn’t even eligible to hold, let alone qualified (“profit AND earnings ratios!” … “reduce premiums by 3000%!!”).

The reality is that we had theater assets on the board and every decision was as you say to blame not the lack of capability.

Obama hid under the covers because he knew he was paying the piper for acting as Radical Islam’s air wing without Congressional Oversight.

Big media vastly outperformed the President’s expectations in covering up his malfeasance.

Bush would’ve been impeached(and possibly prosecuted) over Fast & Furious, Benghazi, and the drone strikes on American citizens. If it’s not obvious at this point that A)the left’s hypocrisy knows no bounds and B)they will allow Obama to get away with just about anything in order to protect him and his(their) agenda, then I don’t know what else I can say.

What’s most chilling of all is the dead Americans, a horrible economy, a screwed up health care system, even the collapse of the US dollar are all acceptable collateral damage to the left. None of us are safe as long as Obama is in the White House.

Steve Eggleston on February 8, 2013 at 8:22 AM

Ed,
APACHEWHOKNOWS and I did get into this in yesterday’s Dempsey thread.
Came down to three options :
1) Obama was indeed detatched and AWOL during the crisis.
2) Staff avoided getting him involved for fear of him mucking it up.
3) Obama was involved, and Panetta is lying to cover up what his involvement was.

That Panetta was willing to admit that CinC was AWOL during such a crisis is astounding. That the CinC is willing to absorb such a hit, even more so. This HAD to be the lesser of two evils.

Has any other CinC ever been so distant at a time of crisis ?
Will he be AWOL for the next one ?

The ramifications of what Panetta just said are staggering.
If true, Obama abdicated responsibility at a moment of crisis.
If not true, why is his involvement being hidden ?

tim c on February 8, 2013 at 8:16 AM

It’s well past time to talk about impeachment. That talk should have started on Jan 20th, 2009, based on ineligibility and the various crimes committed by Barky during the campaign, not least of which but most repulsive of which was his holding the largest political rally of his campaign in a friggin foreign nation … for friggin foreigners!

Since that time, though, Barky has gone on to commit TENS of clearly impeachable acts (almost one a month), any one of which should have had him tossed out of office and tried in criminal court.

Yes, it’s well past time to start talking about impeaching the Indonesian.

I am not in love with the idea that it may be at some point in the future a matter of duty to work to dismantle the machine.

Our nation and our government’s founding was probably a 1 in 20,000 event and we were once the living embodiment of the notion of Locke’s ideas on the innate rights of man.

I fear whatever comes next will not adhere to the notion of a retrained government and an empowered people.

So they disappear Dog Eater from the scene because being absent is better than having to explain the orders he gave which doomed our SEAL’s.

There’s something going on here. From a pure CYA perspective there HAD to be people who would have kept Bark informed even if he wasn’t on scene in some way. The ahole is lying, they’re all lying.

Bishop on February 8, 2013 at 8:40 AM

The SpecOps team at Sigonella Naval Air Station was prepping to go to the aid of those being attacked in Benghazi when they got a call telling them to ‘Stand Down’. According to Panetta, Obama was ‘AWOL’ during the 9hr Benghazi terrorist attack. THAT MEANS only HE had the authority/Power to make that call & give those orders. Sigonella is less than 2hrs frlight time from Benghazi – even if it took them 2 hours to prep they would have been there 4 hrs after the attack started. While that would not have been in time enough to save Stevens, it would have been in time to save the 2 Ex_navy SEALS, who died approx 7 hours after the attack started.

WHOEVER made that call betrayed Americans under fire & sentenced them to death! IMO, its not much different than ordering a drone strike to kill an American – 1 call in eaither case resulted in dead Americans! Panetta should be immediately FIRED…& Obama should face punishment for incompetence, ignorance, & being AWOL during this attack.

It all boils down to this, though: In the 3 months leading up to that final attack on 9/11/12, there were 2 terrorist attacks on the Compound/Stevens. Stevens asked for additional security 3 times & it was denied. Stevens finally warned both Obama & Hillary of the growing terrorist presence in Benghazi AND that he would not survive a 3rd attack. Once again Stevens asked for additional security & was denied. Stevens did not survive that 3rd attack, as he predicted. Forget sending in the calvary during the 3rd attack, this administration had the chance to either provide more security or even pull Americans/Stevens out of Benghazi – they refused to do either. THAT IS CAUSE FOR PUNISHMENT!

Not having enough security for the 1st attack was a ‘mistake’. Not taking the threat seriously enough & not providing security for the 2nd attack COULD BE considered another mistake. Refusing to provide more security AFTER the 2nd attack was not a ‘mistake’ — It was a deliberate decision made that got Americans KILLED!! Ordering rescue mission to ‘Stand Down’ was a deliberate decision made that got Americans KILLED that should be punishable!!

Hillar & Panetta should be FIRED, not allowed to step aside, & at the very least Obama should be CENSURED!

….If I had to pick a punishment for Hillary, Panetta, & Obama….I would recommend dropping them off at the compound in Benghazi & tasking the militia (the one they had assigned to guard Stevens) with guarding THEM for a month – no Secret Service, no marines….just the Libyan militia. If it was good enough for Stevens….

Comedian Chris Rock called Obama ‘like our father’ yesterday. I am guessing that if someone tried to kill ‘your child twice’ you would do anything in your power to protect them, not worry about how insulted the guys trying to kill them will be when the required security needed to keep your ‘kids’ safe shows up!

The fact is Obama doesn’t give a d@mn about Americans. From over-burdening us with suffocating deficit-spending/debt to arming Mexican Drug Cartels who kill 300+ people with them, to killing Americans with drones, to giving terrorists free reign to kill our people…while ordering our response teams to stay out of it….Obama is a paraiah and a threat to the US/Americans!

There is ‘speculation’ but not fact. The FACT that Ex-SEAL Tyrnone Woods was up on the Compound Roof LAZING a terrorist mortar position means he was doing so for an assett that had the potential to stike that target. Dueing a fire-fight yu don’t stop & take time to laze a target if there isn’t a capable asset. So, if there was not an AC130 on-scene, if the AC130 never left Sigonella like Panetta ALLUDES to by sugesting the closest aid was 9-12 hours away (Sigonella is only 2 hrs away), then the Predator overhead providing the live/streaming video had to have been ARMED.

So, let me get this straight: This week, we learned it only takes a single official of the Administration to make the call on using a drone strike to kill an American citizen. But our Ambassador and other officials are under full scale assault by terrorists for nearly 8 hours (with air assets only 2 hours away) while all of Washington is watching it live (except the president, apparently) – and no one made the call???

I still think that has to do with the administration gun-running to Syria through Libya. Either Chris Stevens found out about it, or he decided it wasn’t something he could continue to support or ‘ignore’. They deliberately refused to give him increased security. It’s as if they wanted him dead. The other guys were just collateral damage, to put it in an obscene way. RIP, gentlemen – we hope to get to the bottom of this for your sakes.

Yah that’s another good point. Woods wasn’t going to take a break from fighting off 100 savages to laze a target just to see if the laser works. SOMETHING was overhead with the capability to destroy, and SOMEONE denied the request to let it fire.

Wouldn’t that mean he was in contact with an operator of that asset and waiting for the clearance for a strike? I mean you also wouldn’t begin designating a target unless you thought it would happen within minutes (15 min. or less at a guess).

So an AC-130 or a drone.

Lindsey Graham may be a pathetic RINO when it comes to policy-making, but he’s a damn fine prosecutor/questioner.

Bitter Clinger on February 8, 2013 at 8:09 AM

Yes, that was brilliant. It seems Team O is growing weary of all the lies they must keep.

Imagine if Romney was as prepared in debate 3 and went after Liar in Chief about Benghazi. But he played nice guy instead…….

Has that question been asked of Panetta, “who gave the order to stand down and why?”

Bishop on February 8, 2013 at 8:46 AM

No, it was completely ignored….

easyt65 on February 8, 2013 at 9:00 AM

conservative pilgrim on February 8, 2013 at 9:10 AM

Just think if mitt had this info before the election……

cmsinaz on February 8, 2013 at 8:59 AM

Mitt had a lot of info before the election. 4 years worth of info. What did he do with it? “Obama’s a nice guy.”

Mitt had one good debate. The first one. Then he consistently went down hill until the last one where he played nice and safe. He agreed with the President so much on everything Obama didn’t even understand it.

Sorry, but all the high paid pollsters and talking heads have this election wrong. I’m just looking out over the landscape and taking things in the way I see them. Maybe the American public is actually a lot smarter than we think. They saw two candidates. One.. a sometimes incompetent Marxist who got socialized medicine passed. The other, a weak RINO who laid the blueprint for Obama’s socialized medicine and repeatedly called Obama a nice guy and in the last week of the campaign, said he wanted to “reach across the aisle and work with Democrats.” In the last debate.. he agreed with the President on practically everything.

What was the point of even voting? What real choices were there? The one guy headed up the mafia. The other guy pledged to work with the mafia.
You know.. if Romney was elected, I bet there would be a lot greater chance we’d be looking at an assault weapons ban right now. Romney would have pledged to work with Democrats.

And with all of that… Obama lost about 4 million supporters over 2008. The Republican still gained about a million more supporters over 2008.

This tells me there is a public out there waiting to hear someone come along and speak the truth and expose the freaking lies with a little passion!
60,000,000 people voted against Obama. That was nearly half the electorate… and yet the RINO’s and left thinks it was a mandate and the country is in love with Obama.

And Former Secretary “What Difference Does it Make” has set up what looks like a 2016 campaign website…

workingclass artist on February 8, 2013 at 9:12 AM

I still think that has to do with the administration gun-running to Syria through Libya. Either Chris Stevens found out about it, or he decided it wasn’t something he could continue to support or ‘ignore’. They deliberately refused to give him increased security. It’s as if they wanted him dead. The other guys were just collateral damage, to put it in an obscene way. RIP, gentlemen – we hope to get to the bottom of this for your sakes.

hillsoftx on February 8, 2013 at 9:14 AM

So we were right all along. At the CNN presidential debate when Crowley allowed the President to throw his staged temper tantrum, Obama lied right in Mitt Romney and all of America’s face. He can go to hell.

Before the attack = indifference
During the attack = betrayal
After the attack = lies and cover-up

Pretty much sums it up.

Graham just demolished the entire White House defense on Benghazi in less than ten minutes of cross-examination.

He is, reputedly, an excellent attorney.

So, let me get this straight: This week, we learned it only takes a single official of the Administration to make the call on using a drone strike to kill an American citizen. But our Ambassador and other officials are under full scale assault by terrorists for nearly 8 hours (with air assets only 2 hours away) while all of Washington is watching it live (except the president, apparently) – and no one made the call???

michaelo on February 8, 2013 at 9:07 AM

Now, if you or I are perceived as a threat, we’ll have a drone and a hellfire missile up our ass in 30 seconds flat.

It’s standard procedure to restrict State Dept and CIA employees from speaking to the press in most circumstances. They were very likely made doubely aware of this on their arrival back in the states. I imagine some are more than willing to go public with what they know but would suffer extreme penalties if they did.

RobertE on February 8, 2013 at 9:28 AM

Obama is not simply incompetent . . . he’s dangerous.

rplat on February 8, 2013 at 9:28 AM

You’re on to something here. Bark gave an order to ignore it, to abandon those men because of the “optics”, or worse because of prior secret involvement with the savages who committed the attack.

Yes those in the know are lying. BIG cover-up.
Most seem to exclaim how “cold, heartless, heathenish, etc.” of Barry to never call to check on the situation.

He and Hillary were AWOL on purpose. By design.

I don’t think anyone has asked if Barry and Hillary were in contact during that time.

Where was Hillary? Do we know?

ChicagoBlue on February 8, 2013 at 9:29 AM

Woods wasn’t going to take a break from fighting off 100 savages to laze a target just to see if the laser works. SOMETHING was overhead with the capability to destroy, and SOMEONE denied the request to let it fire.

That be Washington D.C.

Jabberwock on February 8, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Even if true that Dog Eater was absent, that right there is a stunning breakdown of the chain of command and responsibility of pretty much everyone involved in this debacle.

An embassy is being overrun and the POTUS just disappears, the SoS just disappears, everyone is just gone while some low-level staffers handle the situation? What?

Bishop on February 8, 2013 at 9:36 AM

I’ll bet it was that something that fired upon Doherty and Woods. I’ve suspected that for a while now. It never made sense just how unprotected the Stevens and the rest were in Benghazi. This goes beyond incompetence. Someone wanted him dead.

That only matters now because the Democrats are running the show. If this were a Republican administration, we’d know everything about each survivor; every SRM outlet would’ve done exclusives upon exclusives.

Even so, I’m sure a real journalist could find some anonymous sources to provide quotes and info. No, Team O is lying and the media is covering for them.
