Rand Paul’s foreign policy speech: No to isolationism, no to neoconservatism, yes to containment

posted at 9:51 pm on February 6, 2013 by Allahpundit

Carve out time for the video or the transcript, as he’s already the GOP’s leading advocate after two short years in the Senate for less intervention abroad. If you’re not interested in it on the merits, watch it anyway as a sneak preview of a flashpoint in the 2016 primaries. Paul is already thinking about running and he’s very, very likely to clash with you know who on this subject if he does. But distinguishing himself from GOP hawks is only half the goal here; the other half, as is often true lately, is distinguishing himself from his pop. Which explains why the speech begins with an indictment of radical Islam, including this pointed comment:

As many are quick to note, the war is not with Islam but with a radical element of Islam – the problem is that this element is no small minority but a vibrant, often mainstream, vocal and numerous minority. Whole countries, such as Saudi Arabia, adhere to at least certain radical concepts such as the death penalty for blasphemy, conversion, or apostasy. A survey in Britain after the subway bombings showed 20% of the Muslim population in Britain approved of the violence.

Some libertarians argue that western occupation fans the flames of radical Islam – I agree. But I don’t agree that absent western occupation that radical Islam “goes quietly into that good night.” I don’t agree with FDR’s VP Henry Wallace that the Soviets (or Radical Islam in today’s case) can be discouraged by “the glad hand and the winning smile.”

The question about Paul for mainstream conservatives, now and for the next few years, is whether he really is qualitatively different from Ron in his view of international affairs or whether he’s simply a far, far savvier salesman of Paulism. Exit quotation:

During Wednesday’s conference call, he said in response to a question from the Louisville Courier-Journal’s Jim Carroll that the purpose of the speech was “separating myself.” He didn’t say from whom he was separating himself, but in a later question from The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake, he said “there are definite differences” between the two Pauls, and “I think it’s better just to try to be my own person.”

The question about Paul for mainstream conservatives, now and for the next few years, is whether he really is qualitatively different from Ron in his view of international affairs or whether he’s simply a far, far savvier salesman of Paulism.

If you allow him your assessment, “No to isolationism, no to neoconservatism, yes to containment” — that will sell. All my hawk feathers are burnt off, me and a few million of my closest friends. A lot of Ron Paul has already gone mainstream.

And if you somehow stripped the crazy off Ron Paul, you’d have a president Paul right now.

I don’t like the term radical islam..Is it really radical for muslims to attack the infidels when that’s what Muhammad commanded ? But anyways, Rand Paul has been impressing me lately..was disappointed with his vote with Kerry though

The neocons have been as great an enemy to conservatives as liberals. They are for the most part “big government” types who enjoy sending other peoples kids fight and die to promote their goals. John McCain is the only neocon I know whose children have served in the military.

Very accurate assessment, and nice turn of phrase. But for his long-as-heck anti-intervention stance, Mittens would have been thrown overboard in favor of Ron. It’s not even a ****ing contest who’s actually more conservative.

This is not going to go well with the Ronulans.

tommy71 on February 6, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Speak for yourself.

Rand Paul has come to the same conclusion I have – the fiscal cliff is going to hit way harder than anything he can do in terms of ending Neocon fantasies.

His father was barely able to make a dent in their agenda – hell OBAMA started more wars – so he might as well get their support until the fit is inescapably about to hit the shan.

Wouldn’t this be a question for all Conservatives?

I am warmer to Rand Paul than any of the Rove/Bush/MSM approved “front runners” like Ryan, Rubio, or Christie. At least Rand Paul is willing to speak out against the machine and not act like a Democrat-lite politician.

tommy71 on February 6, 2013 at 10:35 PM

My way of looking at this is – 2016 is a long way away. By then, who knows what the major issues will be. But Rand is simply positioning himself to be the one with the best record by that time. Possibly a different war with Iran, major inflation or possibly even a depression will make probably push the GOP back to it’s non-interventionist roots.

Rand is the only guy in the GOP who can somehow ride that middle-ground between non-intervention and intervention. I wish him luck as that’s not easy. As a non-interventionist myself, I say he’s a step in the right direction and about as good a Presidential candidate I’ll see in my lifetime. He’ll take his oath 100% seriously and will lead with an eye toward protecting our liberties and keeping the power of the executive at bay.

I see no reason why most GOPer’s can’t back him. Hell they backed Romney and McCain!

This is one thing that worries me about Rubio, no not the immigration stuff but foreign policy. Rubio sounds too much like a interventionist, or neo-con, at times. Being a hawk is ok and being for a strong military is great, but it does not mean going into every country that has a hiccup and involving U.S. troops to do nation building. This is really the case in places like Syria, which has no strategic use to the United States at all. It is just too expensive and waste military resources that we are going to need containing a more aggressive China. That is where the real ball game is, not in the middle east, but in Asia. If Rubio wants to win the presidency he is going to have to knock that stuff off or he will start reminding people of GWB in more ways than just immigration.

Rand Paul is going to prove to be an interesting candidate for the presidency. He is going to have to show that he is not his father on foreign policy. He is going to have to understand that Asia, not the hell hole that is the Middle East, is were American national interest are under threat and have a reasonable plan to protect it. So far I like were he is going. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Those look okay to me also. I still ain’t wearing em. I was a Doc Martin kinda guy in my youth, then a jungle boot guy, now………merrell boots are the most functional for my lifestyle. My preference for absolute comfort, these. I have a pair of these I like too. Why are we talking about boots and such?

He hasn’t shown any antisemitism so they probably can’t stand him.
