Why a group as demonized as the NRA prefers LaPierre to be its spokesman for high-profile stuff like this rather than the more soft-spoken, grandfatherly David Keene, I don’t know.

We don’t “prefer” LaPierre. But LaPierre is the real power in the NRA administration. I saw someone refer to him as the NRA president here yesterday. He isn’t, and hasn’t been for years. He is the Executive VP and CEO, since back in the early ’90s.

He long ago consolidated his power within the organization. While he has done a lot to build the organization and its influence, he isn’t a great speaker, and he is a polarizing figure. He needs to stay out of the spotlight and let others speak for the organization, but it appears his ego needs the attention.
