Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on February 3, 2013 by Allahpundit

If you watched the Hagel hearing, you know why damage control is desperately needed this morning. You also know why Chuck Hagel’s the last guy you want doing it. Panetta and Martin Dempsey will pinch-hit instead on NBC and CNN. I’m curious to see if Dempsey sticks strictly to defense policy questions or if he actually issues a vote of confidence in the nominee. Uniformed officers typically don’t weigh in on political appointments, do they?

Meanwhile, Harry Reid will turn up on ABC to dodge questions about whether he’ll let Feinstein’s assault-weapons ban come up for a vote. And Wayne LaPierre will debate gun control with Mark Kelly, a.k.a. Mr. Gabby Giffords, on Fox. Why a group as demonized as the NRA prefers LaPierre to be its spokesman for high-profile stuff like this rather than the more soft-spoken, grandfatherly David Keene, I don’t know. The line-up via National Journal:

Meet the Press hosts Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey

Face the Nation airs from New Orleans for a Super Bowl special and hosts NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

This Week hosts Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa.

Fox News Sunday hosts NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and former Rep. Gabby Giffords husband Mark Kelly

State of the Union hosts Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey and former Sen. George Allen

How has the NRA been doing in regards to the policy battle?

Maybe FNS, with the gun issue on for discussion, will have more info on the Kyle killing here in Texas. The lib blogs ought to be full of trash comments about it today.

Menendez?

Mr. Arrogant on February 3, 2013 at 8:28 AM

Doubt it…

Harry the Pederast thinks it’s just vast rightwing conspiracy stuff…

Reid defended the Menendez as a “friend” and “outstanding senator” but declined to discuss any details he may have had with the New Jersey lawmaker about media reports of allegations that he had sex with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.

“First of all, Bob Menendez is my friend. He’s an outstanding senator. Any questions in this regard, direct to him. I don’t know anything about it,” Reid said.

Elite Navy SEAL slain in Erath County; suspect arrested
.

Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL who became known as the deadliest U.S. sniper, was one of two men murdered on Saturday afternoon at a gun range in Erath County. Police have a suspect in custody.

ExpressoBold on February 3, 2013 at 9:08 AM

Chris Kyle was reportedly trying to help the shooter when he was assassinated.
Curious just how many Seals have been assassinated or died mysterious deaths, everything from helicopter crashes to who knows what since the body double death of OBL.

Why a group as demonized as the NRA prefers LaPierre to be its spokesman for high-profile stuff like this rather than the more soft-spoken, grandfatherly David Keene, I don’t know.

We don’t “prefer” LaPierre. But LaPierre is the real power in the NRA administration. I saw someone refer to him as the NRA president here yesterday. He isn’t, and hasn’t been for years. He is the Executive VP and CEO, since back in the early ’90s.

He long ago consolidated his power within the organization. While he has done a lot to build the organization and its influence, he isn’t a great speaker, and he is a polarizing figure. He needs to stay out of the spotlight and let others speak for the organization, but it appears his ego needs the attention.

“The real story was that in order to put the puzzle of intelligence together that led us to Bin Laden, there were a lot of pieces out there that were a part of that puzzle. Yes, some of it came from some of the tactics that were used at that time, interrogation tactics that were used. But the fact is we put together most of that intelligence without having to resort to that.”

Krugman on This is Weak with George Snuffleupagus (or is it This Week Needs David Brinkley?) : “Why do so many gun supporters think we’re living in a Mad Max kind of country?”

Hmm…let me take a guess:

1) Liberal judges (and incompetent police departments. Yeah, Chicago, I’m talking about you!) releasing hardened criminals onto the street.

2) A 15-minute response time to 911 for a home intruder (personal experience).

3) Gas at my corner at $3.79 a gallon and rising with no end in sight.

Sounds like the setup for a Mad Max movie right there.
